Goals from Tom Gardiner and Rhys Murrell-Williamson, his second in three days, gave St Albans an impressive and potentially important three points. Both sides went into this game as the only two in the division with three wins from the opening three games, Saints leading their hosts on goal difference. By the end though City were three points clear of a side tipped by Saints manager Ian Allinson to be one of the main challengers for the title. And it continued their best start to a season for 17 years, when seven straight wins were recorded. In truth there was as little between the teams in the first half as there was in the table at the start. Chelmsford just edged it but while they had a lot more shots at goal, only one called Dean Snedker into action, holding on to a James Stevenson effort just before the quarter-hour mark. Saints in contrast took their one effort when it came. A free-kick from the left from Zan Banton was clipped to the back post where Gardiner was steaming in, planting his header beyond Sam Beasent. Solomon Sambou almost danced his way to the goal later on in the half but was hounded out. The second half was a strange beast, with the quality down but the number of chances rapidly climbing. And City’s second was a total case in point. Craig Braham-Barrett was caught in possession and Murrell-Williamson gleefully gobbled up the chance, curling the ball into the corner. Chelmsford turned to their bench but couldn’t get a long enough period to really threaten Saints. They did have chances; Kudus Oyenuga forced Snedker into a save down low to his left and Stevenson hit a volley across goal and wide. In the end the expected barrage never came and the clinical edge to take their chances when they came was the difference. Match report by Neil Metcalfe ST ALBANS CITY 4 POOLE TOWN 0 TUESDAY 6TH SEPTEMBER 2016 NATIONAL LEAGUE SOUTH 7.45PM CLARENCE PARK ATT: 485 FIRST HALF GOALS FROM JOSH HILL AND LOUIE THEOPHANOUS GAVE CITY THE PERFECT START AND CITY’S TOP SCORER COMPLETED HIS HAT-TRICK LATE IN THE SECOND PERIOD. It was a much needed return to form after losing their unbeaten home record to Hampton & Richmond Borough on Saturday and puts Saints into third place in the Vanarama National League South. Despite the half-time score it wasn’t the greatest halves of football, yet it got off to the perfect start. Matt Ball swung in a left-wing corner and Hill rose highest to power in his first for the club. That was in the third minute but it took over half an hour for the second to arrive. Junior Morias fed the ball through and Theophanous slotted it beneath Nick Hutchings, although the Poole keeper may have done better. Shaun Lucien’s shot looped up and hit the bar and then Hutchings had to claw one of the line under pressure from a combination of Theophanous and Ball. The rest of the half though was pretty lacklustre with City struggling to keep possession long enough to put Poole under sustained pressure. City also looked the more likely to score next after the resumption. Morias’ shot inside 20 seconds was fumbled by Hutchings with Theophanous closing in and then the City striker hit a first-time shot wide from 10 yards. Ben Herd also got forward well but his low cross was superbly defended by Jamie Whisken. However, it was no surprise when the hosts made it three. Lucien pushed the ball beyond the final defender and City’s skipper, in the absence of Lee Chappell, slipped it beyond Hutchings. And with practically the last kick of the game, Theophanous completed his hattrick, powering forward from Herd’s pass and firing low at the near post. POOLE TOWN V ST ALBANS CITY The Saints make the long journey to Dorset to face Poole Town on Saturday as they look to continue their perfect start to the new season. The Dolphins have had had a mixed opening four fixtures of their 2017/2018 campaign, picking up two victories, a draw and a suffering a solitary defeat. Their second win of the new season came against Chippenham Town on Tuesday evening, when a 93rd minute Steve Devlin strike secured the points against a home side that had been down to nine men for almost half an hour. Poole manager Tom Killick has retained the vast majority of the squad that finished last season in an impressive fifth place, with many of the players having been with the club for a number of seasons. Key players such as goalkeeper Nick Hutchings, Lewis Lindsay, Luke Burbidge and last season’s top league goal scorer Steve Devil, who found the net on 14 occasions, having all signed new deals. Alongside the core of last season’s team, Killick has brought in a number of new faces to freshen up his squad and build upon their top five finish. Tony Lee (AFC Totton) and Matt Neale (AFC Bournemouth) have arrived at the club curing the summer months alongside Jack Dickson who was last playing in the USA on a scholarship programme. Christian Oxlade- Chamberlain (above) and Jez Bedford also arrived last week from Portsmouth on an initial one month loan deal. However, the Dolphins have already suffered a significant blow with the news that Luke Roberts has been ruled out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury. The forward has scored almost forty goals for the club since his arrival in 2014, and will be a significant miss for the hosts.
