REALY FOR LIFEHistoryRelay For Life began in the USA in May 1985 when colorectal surgeon, Dr. Gordy Klatt, wanted to raise awareness of cancer and boost the income of his local cancer charity. Since then, RFL has become the largest fundraising event for cancer in the world.

MENA Region With Participation of more than 2500 individuals, Friends of Cancer Patientslaunchedtheregion’sfirsteverRelayForLifeinSharjah,UnitedArab Emirates. Relay For Life UAE aims to raise awareness of cancer and spread the importance of a healthy lifestyle in addition to supporting those who are battling cancer by empowering them and creating a supportive community around them and their families.

Relay for Life had arranged for numerous activities to take place around the track, enabling

those taking a break from their walk - as well as the supporters not participating directly - to

enjoy a wealth of entertainment. Over 40 activities were held around the clock during Relay for

Life, including live band and DJ performances, comedy acts, poetry readings and storytelling

sessions.

LUMINARIA BAGS

Luminarias honor every life touched by cancer. You can dedicate them to a loved one lost, someone currently battling, or anyone who’s overcome cancer. You will see the Luminarias decorated with names and sometimes messages to the people they’re dedicated to.

Relay participants share an emotional moment when each Luminaria is lit in remembrance of a life touched by cancer. Together, we take a moment of silence to remember the loved ones they’re dedicated to. When you make a donation for a Luminaria it helps fund the Friends of Cancer Patients mission to help save lives.

HAIR DONATION TENT‘Locks of Hope’ aims to help restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world in a positive outlook. The donated hair is used to create the highest quality of hair prosthetics.

CLOSINGRelay for Life Concludes with a Burst of Positive Energy against Cancer

Relay for life then concluded with the final Big Balloon Lap, with the participants dancing their way around the track to music from the stage loudspeakers. The circuit was the last in the many thousands that had been undertaken by the participants, with half of them completed during the nocturnal hours. The 24 hour nature of the event had been designed to highlight that cancer is a disease that doesn’t sleep and also to show solidarity with cancer patients who often feel a sense of loneliness during the small hours.

Wrapping up the closing ceremony before the final walkathon lap was an awards ceremony that honoured all those participants who had excelled in their commitment to the first ever Relay for Life in the MENA region.
