    What is

    th

    guest s main point?

    Interviewer: Welcome to

    Hot Seat

    the interview

    show

with tough talk and tough questions. Today

    we re with

     ohn

    Sanders, best-selling author

    of a

    controversial

    new

    book:   ive Up

    Earth Welcome

    to

    our

    program.

Mr Sanders: I m happy to be here,

    Interviewer:

Now, in your book, you say that we will be

hated   future generations for not saving

     Mother Earth. Is that right?

Mr sanders: Yes. We re in crisis

    l

      and

    it s

    a result of our

    selfishness. We re

    killing

    our

    own

    mother for

    a tiny

    bit

    of

    convenience.

    Interviewer: Killing

    our own mother?

    Mr Sanders:

    We

    consume ,

we waste, and we think it s

all natural. We understand this pace of devel·

opment is damaging the Earth, but we can t

    give up our cars, our

    convenience stores.

    Interviewer: Yes,

    right.

    In your book

    you

    criticize

    convenience

    stores.

    Mr

    Sanders:

    That s right.  hink of

    all the electricity used

    for the bright lights,

    heating food and

    cooling

    drinks all

    day and all night.

    We pull oil from

    the

    ground-

    burn it to make

    electricity, pro

    duce

      O

    cause global

    warming.

    For what?

    For a

    lifestyle that

    ruins

    our health

    and our

    environment.

    And we re

    doing

    no

    ing about it.

    Interviewer: Well,

    do

    I remember correctly?

    Last

    mo

in Brussels there was a United Nations

    conference on -

    Mr Sanders: Meaningless.

    People

    are slaves to a

    convenience-store lifestyle. Everyone kno

it but no one has the courage to change

I for example, never use plastics. I grow m

    own

    chemical-free vegetables,

    always tak

    public transportation

    lCl

    -

Interviewer: That s not practical .

    To

    be honest,

    it

sounds like you re just trying to sell your bo

    Mr Sanders:

Not at all. To change this, everyone, an

I mean EVERYONE, needs to give up som

    convenience

    from

    their lives. Start simple

more plastic bottles. Refuse to drink from

anything except glass. Until you give som

    thing up, nothing will change.

Interviewer Oh, come on, the problems of the worl

are not going to be solved   me drinking

    from a glass.

    Mr Sanders:

All right. There are many other things

    can do.

    Interviewer: Yeah.

    Mr

    Sanders:

You ll find more ideas in my boo

    PatMo

Mr. Sanders is right. We should

give up a lor of convenience in

    order to save the Earth.

    Roy

Mr. Sanders may be right hut

his ideas for solving lhe prob-

    lems are

    not real iSlic.

    Cannon

    Mr. Sanders is simply appealing

    to

    our

    emotions in order to sell

    books.

People have been saying things like

    this for years.

    Our

    environmental

    problems arc not

    serious.

    4

The rool of these problems is

    economic. No

    one will

    change as

    long as things are cheap.

    Now

    compare

    with

    a classmate.

What we really need is more

    action from government.

    5

    We

    should change our lifestyle

    in

    order 10 protect our Eanh.

    We

    all know .hat things like

    plastics and automobiles damage
