ALDERWAY TO ALDERMASTON

AFC Aldermaston were formed in 1952 as AWRE FC and changed their name to AFC Aldermaston in the late sixties or early seventies. They commenced in local football before moving from the Reading & District League to the Hellenic League for season 1979/80. After seven seasons at that level they voluntarily returned to the Reading League before, despite being based in Berkshire, they joined the Hampshire League Division Three in 1991/92. They moved up and down the various Divisions prior to becoming members of the Wessex League in 2004/05 before opting out at the end of the 2009/10 season because of problems over Ground Grading. It is interesting to note that when they left us, they were in Division One along with such as AFC Portchester, Shaftesbury, Warminster Town and the Champions that season ASSC Hamble. Such was their location in the North East of the County that games at such as Shaftesbury and Warminster involved round trips of 130-140 miles. Over six seasons in the Sydenhams Wessex League the Clubs record read as follows:-

PL W D L F A Pts 222 46 22 154 299 677 160

The figures are “marred” by two seasons - 2008 and 2010 – when they finished in last place in the table conceding 161 and 163 goals respectively and amassing only four points in their final season. From here they moved to the Hampshire Premier League where they met such as AFC Stoneham, Team Solent and Hamble Club before, after four seasons, joining the Thames Valley League which was, or is, the

old Reading Senior League. After just two seasons they re-applied for promotion to Step Six and opted for the Hellenic rather than the Sydenhams League and are members of the Division One East, finishing 3rd of 13 last term. To their credit, and hopefully this does not sound condescending, the Club has survived and coped with various ups and downs and, to be truthful, very little success but their ground problems – more anon – will surely prevent them going any higher. Before last season, their best standings over the years have been 7th in the Hellenic (1979/80), 4th in Hampshire Premier Three (1991/92) and 9th in our Division Three back in (2005/06). This season they were accepted into the Buildbase FA Vase and received a bye to the 2nd Qualifying Round but went down at home to Binfield 3-1. In 2017/18 they scored twice but conceded three to Romsey in a 1st Qualifying Round tie also at their Recreation Ground home. This piece was “inspired” by recent conversation with a “non-Wessex” colleague who visited the Club for the first time in early December. The writer has not been there since 2013 but it appears to have not changed at all from

that time or indeed from when they left the Wessex League. As previously stated, they left the Wessex League of their own volition but as to whether they could not or chose not to achieve the required ground grading others with longer (and better) memories than mine will be aware. What it disproves again, with no disrespect to the Club, is the FA’s assertion that Ground Grading is standard across all levels across the Country. We wish our former Club well for the future.

CLUB NEWS

There’s a new member of the Centurions club, with Crit Clarke recently hitting the 100 mark for Portland United, and further east, Coby Wilson has recently racked up 150 appearances for Hamble Club. Couple of Christmas presents in the form of transfers are noted, River Smith has returned to Hamworthy United after spells at Bournemouth and Shaftesbury, whilst Ash Pope has left the County Ground to return to Christchurch. Defender Josh Garraway and forward Rudy Andrew-Knott have signed for Tadley Calleva on a dual registration basis from Eastleigh. The club have also re-signed striker George Hallahan after a spell at Bemerton, and whilst at Barlow Park we hear that the scourge of many a Wessex defence, Brett Denham, has joined Combined Counties side Badshot Lea.

AFC Stoneham are delighted to announce that they’ll officially move to their new stadium in Stoneham Lane on January 6th. The facility will be fully operational on this day allowing the club to complete important legal documentation with the FA and Eastleigh Borough Council giving them, amongst many other things, security of tenure and numerous benefits. Nearly all of their 41 teams will commence training at the new Stadium from this date. The club will continue to play games at the current ground in Chestnut Avenue until grass pitches are available at the new home in September 2020. It is hoped that the first ever senior competitive match

will be against Sholing during mid-January in the Hampshire Senior Cup. This historic move will create a new chapter in Stoneham’s 100 year old history and undoubtedly allow the club to grow, develop and flourish further moving into 2020. This move has been in the pipeline for some five years and a huge amount of work has been undertaken by club volunteers to reach this point. Undoubtedly negotiations have been both frustrating and testing at times for all parties however the club

would like to place on record a huge thank you to both The FA and Eastleigh Borough Council for their help and support in this period. This also seems to be an opportune moment to remind everyone that it will be a requirements of Hampshire county FA to register for access. In order to do so, please visit the County website - http://www.hampshirefa.com/news/2019/jun/18/register-to-use-stoneham-

lane-football-complex Here is a reminder about the story- Hampshire FA have been appointed as

operators of the £9 million Stoneham Lane Football Complex facility. They are part of the Parklife Project which is an FA initiative to ensure the income generated at the football clubs is put back into funding grassroots football within the local area. In order to enter the facility, ALL users will need to register beforehand. The FA and Sport England require the data generated from registrations and the reception turnstiles to analyse trends and participation. Furthermore registration is compulsory to meet their safeguarding requirements amongst other things. Each registration will be sent a unique QR code that will give them access via the turnstile. Registration is simple and it should take no longer than 2 minutes. Please visit the website (link above). All enquiries can be sent to [email protected].

MIDWEEK ROUNDUP

With no match reports filed this week, it’s straight to another very brief midweek round up (no doubt to the delight of the readers but not the Clubs and the Fixtures Secretary) as the weather took a strong grip on proceedings. Nine games were scheduled for Tuesday of which six were postponed, two completed and one abandoned. Those lost were the Division One matches at Hythe & Dibden and New Milton, the Russell-Cotes ties at both AFC Portchester and Christchurch, the Bournemouth Senior Cup Semi Final between Lymington Town and Brockenhurst and the Wiltshire Senior Cup tie involving Laverstock & Ford and Wroughton. The Bournemouth Senior Cup Quarter Final between Downton and Bashley was abandoned after fifteen minutes because of fog – thanks to all for trying and hopefully a safe journey home – leaving just the two completed matches. In the Third Round of the Hampshire Senior Cup a Tom Bearwish goal, the only one of the game, gave Eastleigh victory over Petersfield, a creditable performance by the visitors who hopefully enjoyed the experience. The other completed game was at Bemerton and a long evening for all involved in cold and foggy conditions. Bemerton scored first against Hellenic League visitors Malmesbury Victoria and looked to have progressed until an equaliser in the eighth minute of second half stoppage time – a penalty converted by the visiting goalkeeper. The Rules of this competition decree that extra time be played and that went very much in favour of the home side with the final result being 5-2 with George Hallahan scoring twice. Credit to all for getting through the evening with the home side now awaiting the Semi Final draw having scored twenty four goals in the Competition this far. Not content with decimating Tuesdays Programme the weather also caused the abandonment of Wednesday’s North Hants Cup Semi Final between Whitchurch and Tadley Calleva though as the final is probably scheduled for April that should not cause too many problems. On both Saturday last and Tuesday there were matches postponed very close to kick off time. On occasions this is unavoidable – heavy rain immediately prior to the match – but other such postponements do not reflect well on anybody – The League, Clubs or Officials and are annoying. to put it mildly, to spectators that have travelled – and may not come again. If a game has to be postponed then so be it, but it should surely be done a) as a last resort and b) taking the interests of ALL CONCERNED in to account.

WHEN WE PLAYED ON BOXING DAY

Contrary to a lot of leagues of similar standing the Sydenhams League, apart from the Clubs on the island, have chosen over recent years not to have fixtures on Boxing Day and the League has accepted that view, Looking back ten years to season 2009/10, whilst there was nowhere near a full Programme there were eight fixtures played on the 26th, four in each Division. In the Premier there were games at Totton & Eling, Brading, Lymington and Poole and whilst the results and scorers are recorded, unfortunately in those days attendances were not shown on Full Time. Looking at the four fixtures in more detail there was something of a goalfest at Millers Park with Totton & Eling defeating Blackfield & Langley by the odd goal in seven. Phillip Ward (2), Matty Monk and Dan Westfield scored for the home side and Chris Brookman and Faoud Hamodu plus an own goal registering for the visitors. The game at Brading was an all-Island affair with Cowes Sports the visitors and after Olly Buckett and Mark Augustus had scored for their respective sides, an unfortunate own goal gave Cowes the three points. Those of a Lymington disposition should perhaps look away now as the fixture at the Sports Ground was the annual local derby with Brockenhurst which on this occasion ended with a 4-0 scoreline in the Badgers’ favour. The goal scorers on the day were Sam Carter, Kevin James, Dave Marden and Lewis Gundry. The final game in the Premier Division saw Poole Town, who finished eighteen points clear at the top of the table at the end of the season, defeat Hamworthy United in front of a crowd of 421, by three goals to nil with Stuart Brown, Luke Whitley and Steve Smith on the scoresheet. It will not be a surprise to anyone to learn that Taffy Richardson was part of the Poole team whilst Ollie Cherrett and Jamie Barron (now at Winchester) featured for the Hammers, also worth a mention is the fact that well known referee Rudi Burton was in the middle that day! In Division One Folland Sports were to top the table come the end of the season and they added three points to their tally with a 2-0 victory over Downton on Boxing Day. Lloyd Webber and Ricky Bull were the Follands marksmen and the side also included Ashley Jarvis and Jamie Musselwhite, so there was no shortage of firepower. In one of the most local of local derbies – the two grounds are perhaps a mile and a half apart – Tadley Calleva claimed the highest score of the day with a 6-1 defeat of AFC Aldermaston. Ben Dillon, who is still at the Club scoring for and running the reserves, notched a hat trick with a brace from Peter White and the sixth from Ashley Ledger. The visitors’ goal came from Ricky Rogers and they were to leave the League at the end of the season having finished bottom of the Division with just four points. The remaining two games were also local derbies, the first on the Waterside where Fawley entertained Hythe & Dibden and a 4-2 victory helped them on their way to second place at the seasons end. The home sides scorers were Matt Redman, Simon Davison, Craig Feeney (who has since moved up a couple of levels) and Brendon McElevey – the last three all having started the game on the bench - while Dan Fox and Liam Robinson (presumably the same player who has since scored many goals for Blackfield) were on the mark for the visitors. Lastly Verwood made the short journey to Ringwood and lost 1-0 – the winning goal being an own goal! Returning to the overall theme of playing on Boxing Day the Western League have a virtually full Programme each year and some interesting figures from the day last season. In the Premier Division Buckland Athletic attracted an attendance of 242 whilst in Division One Welton Rovers had in excess of 300 and both Keynsham and Longwell Green topped the 200 mark. But all these were almost “small fry” compared to the Premier Division fixture at Westbury that attracted 445 spectators. A lot of gate money, so, worthwhile playing on Boxing Day?

MJM Sports are now closed for the Christmas break re-opening on 2nd January 2020.

WEEKEND MATCH REPORTS

Mike Robins writes HAMWORTHY UNITED 8-1 SOLENT UNIVERSITY FC EMPHATIC win for the Hammers in front of a crowd just shy of the 100 mark, boosted by a small but vociferous number of Merthyr Town fans who had travelled only for their game at Wimborne to fall by the wayside on a thoroughly miserable and wet afternoon. The hosts opened the scoring in the 4th minute when Dan CANN found the net from close range, and the lead was doubled five minutes later when a Fawzi SAADI corner sailed into the net, with perhaps some help from a defender. Despite a string of corners Hamworthy couldn’t increase the lead and at the Bridge end of the ground, Solent’s Ethan Taylor brought down the ball but shot wide on the turn and a quick ball out of defence found Ryan Penny who saw his fine shot well parried by Hammers’ keeper Ollie King. The third goal came on 28 minutes when Lee FRANCIS was well placed to collect a touch from Cameron Munn and stroke the ball home from around six yards. HT 3-0 Just nine seconds after the resumption, Solent’s TAYLOR found the net from 20 yards but that was as good as it got really for the Students. The three goal cushion was soon restored when a shot from Francis was parried by keeper Dominic Oakes with MUNN on hand to poach a fourth. Solent’s Jean-Pierre Alexander had a chance to get as second for the visitors but his low shot went to the far post, when perhaps if he’d gone near post it might have found the net with King exposed and James Goodey also tested the Hammers custodian from distance. However it was all over bar the shouting when James KING was unselfishly played in by Cann with an easy tap in on 66 minutes to make it 5-1. A sixth soon arrived, and it was KING again this time ending with a solo effort from an acute angle and with twelve minutes left sub Elliot HARTNELL-BAKER slotted the ball home from a difficult angle to make it seven. Proceedings were rounded off by skipper FRANCIS making it 8-1 when slotting the ball home from close range after good approach work by Saadi- making this Solent’s heaviest defeat in their Wessex League history. FT 8-1

WEEK TWENTY ONE ROUND UP

hat have we done to deserve such weather? An almost total wash out, more headaches for the Fixture Secretary and the only likely saving grace is that this will be much shorter than usual writes John Gorman.

Three games survived in the Premier Division with both AFC Stoneham and AFC Portchester in action and able to close the gap on Alresford. Stoneham won 2-0 at Hamble Club and both sides deserve all credit for getting the game played, even advancing the kick-off to try and beat the promised rain. Goals from Matt Palmer and Edu Jiminez gave the visitors the points and maintained their second place in the table. A lot of hard work in the morning enabled the game between Portchester and Horndean to go ahead and the home side got their reward with a best of three goals victory. Ben Anderson gave the Deans a halftime lead before goals from Alex Baldacchino and Nathan Paxton ensured a home success. The third game was nowhere near as close as Hamworthy United defeated Solent University by eight goals to one. Lee Francis and James King both scored twice with Dan Cann, Fawzi Saadi, Cameron Munn and Elliot

Hartnell-Baker taking the tally to eight. Solent, possibly with their normal availability problems at this time of year, had Ethan Taylor to thank for their goal. The outcome at the end of the day is that Alresford’s lead has now been cut to three points while six points cover the next five Clubs which are led by AFC Stoneham. The one game in Division One saw another resounding home victory with US Portsmouth going back to the top of the table after scoring seven goals without reply against New Milton Town. James Franklyn, a regular name on the score sheet, notched a hat trick with George Root and Dec Seiden each scoring twice. The top of the Table is still very congested with five points covering six Clubs. Todays scheduled fixture between East Cowes Vics and Verwood has also fallen victim to the weather. As this is the last such offering before Christmas can I please take the opportunity to wish all those connected with the League and all those who work so hard for all the Clubs a Very Happy Festive Season and to thank Mike Robins, on behalf of all, for the vast amount of work he puts in to the Newsletter each week.

Happy Christmas one and all
