To improve the experience of Carers resident in the Wakefield Metropolitan District so that the needs of Carers are recognised and that Carers receive support and services. These objectives will be achieved through:

encouraging those who look after a partner, relative, friend or neighbour due to ill health, disability or the affects of old age to recognise themselves as Carers

encouraging Carers to recognise their own needs

to be inclusive in providing information, support, advice, advocacy and practical help to all Carers

bringing the needs of Carers to the attention of policy makers and partner organisations

Once again Carers Wakefield & District has had a very successful year. Since the last AGM in 2016 we have answered: 9,638 enquiries from carers and supported 791 new carers.

This year we have been fortunate to receive funding from the Big Lottery Funding via the People’s Project. Funding has also been received for the workshops/training for parent carers of children on the autism spectrum.

Peter McEvoy has also boosted our coffers by donning his running shoes to take part in the 'Manchester Half Marathon'. A huge thank you to him and to all those who fund raise, by whatever means, for our organisation.

However, I think all would agree that without the hard work and dedication of our staff, who continually use their expertise to do their best to 'help carers care', Carers Wakefield & District would not go from strength to strength. On behalf of the Trustees a big thank you.

Whilst mentioning Trustees, if you, or anyone you know, feel that you have something to offer the organisation by becoming a Trustee then please contact Justine Bilton the CEO of Carers Wakefield & District .

    STAFF

The year saw further growth in the staff team, with the latest appointment (too late to be included here), bringing us up to a workforce of 27 in total. Developments were a mix of internal promotion and new recruitment. We have again pictured all the staff to help you put a face to a name and see how we all fit together. Those either new to the organisation or in a new role have been given the opportunity to say a bit more!

Denise Goznik - Carers Support & Development Manager Training Awareness

I began work with Carers Wakefield as a support worker in January 2016 and after just over 12 months learning many new skills I applied for promotion to the newly established Carers Support & Development Manager- Training and Awareness. I was very pleased to be successful and have been in my new role since March 2017. My new role includes the management of the Care Home Vanguard Team and our dedicated Dementia Support Worker. I also manage, co-ordinate and deliver organisational training and raising awareness of our services. I am enjoying my new, challenging role and look forward to being part of our continuing development.

    Joanne Catch - Operations Manager

I started working for Carers Wakefield in November 2009 as Administrative Officer and over time I have taken on a number of roles culminating in my recent appointment as Operations Manager. I am also part of the Benefits Team who are responsible for checking if carers are receiving their full benefits entitlement. I was attracted to Carers Wakefield as a place of work due to my previous experience of caring for my mother-in-law (cancer) and my grandma (dementia). Away from work,

I spend a lot of time with my family as I have three children and I enjoy (attempting!) to keep fit through running, cycling and walking.

I began working for Carers Wakefield & District in April 2017. I am a generic carer support worker, based in Castleford. I previously worked for Age UK as a support worker after having a complete career change from being a hairdresser. I feel lucky to be a part of such a great organisation, no two visits are the same and I definitely learn something new everyday. I enjoy the work I do and the challenges it brings.

I started to work for Carers Wakefield in April 2017. I am a generic support worker based at Waterton House. I feel privileged to be working with carers who do a fantastic job often under incredible emotional strain. I have had numerous roles in my career starting off as a childminder whilst my 2 children were growing up. I then worked for the RSPCA for a few years before becoming a support worker in Children's Services supporting families who were struggling to parent their children safely. I then felt ready for a change and worked for AGEUK in Barnsley as a Social Prescriber which involved working with people who had become socially isolated and supporting them to attend groups/activities or befriending to help them overcome social anxieties that were preventing them from getting out more. In my spare time I like to go camping in 'Bessie' my campervan with my partner and 2 dogs. I also like to run and enter obstacle/mud races, garden and go to the cinema.

We received a total of 507 applications for My Time this financial year with a total of £39,752.00 being allocated to carers.

As always holidays or weekend breaks were the most popular use for funding with just under half of applications being used for this. Hairdressing and beauty were also popular although we did have applications for a trip on a steam train, guitar lessons, yoga retreat weekend, season tickets for local rugby league clubs and a National Trust membership.

    VOLUNTEERS

    MY TIME

Another busy year with the key points being:

Part time Volunteer Coordinator now in post. 14 active volunteers at present, 7 as befrienders and others

providing support at groups, promotion at events; support at Dementia Seminars; and admin support for the Looking After Me programme. No plans to increase numbers as we prefer to offer quality as opposed to quantity.

Informal volunteers who help with stuffing envelopes for newsletter mailings.

Volunteers get 1 to 1 support from the Volunteer coordinator, as well as regular volunteer meetings, including training and development.

2 celebrations each year. This year in Volunteer Week we enjoyed an evening trip to the theatre and are planning a celebratory Christmas meal which is an opportunity for volunteers to meet one another.

Future plans to establish a role for a volunteer to contact carers for feedback on support received from the organisation.

OTHER ACTIVITIES Shortly after last year’s AGM, we were involved in a well-attended information event in Wakefield Town Hall at the end of November. The following month, as the festive season drew closer, carers were invited to our Christmas Party at the Cedar Court Hotel.

Many of the action in the first half of 2017, such as funding bids, recruitment and events, is referred to elsewhere in the Review, until in June we had the usual flurry of activity for Carers Week, which this year included a trip to the coast, an information event and relaxation afternoon as well as many of the support groups organising their own ideas to celebrate.

Bringing us nicely to today’s Silver Anniversary celebration of supporting carers across the Wakefield district. 25 years which has seen big changes in the world we live in, and with it bigger changes in the nature of the enquiries for support that we receive.

Carers’ needs, and the recognition of those needs, has grown immensely, so it is maybe not totally surprising that the organisation has grown from a workforce of 1 or 2 people… 'with a good idea', to a team of 27 dedicated staff, working with professionals in health, social care, housing and other voluntary or third sector agencies such as ourselves, to get the best outcome for carers.

    Kay Sanderson

I started work with Carers Wakefield & District in April 2017, following an 18 year career with a national mental health charity. During which time I attended many carers groups and supported the service user group as staff link, where I contributed to promoting attendance for activities for service users with mental health issues. In recent years, I also provided support to my elderly father who was registered blind so I had a good insight into the issues that carers face on a daily basis. These experiences made me look at the type of work I wanted to do and prompted me to look at a role working directly with carers, in order to support them to have a better quality of life. Originally based at the Civic hub, in July, I moved across to join the Care Homes Vanguard team in Wakefield. I now work four days a week, and am enjoying finding my feet in my second new challenge within the last 6 months! My hobbies are caravanning and supporting Wakefield Trinity rugby league team which gives me a perfect work life balance.

    HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR

BIG LOTTERY FUND Last year we applied for and was successful in getting over

£9000 from Awards for All (Big Lottery), to be able to run the Looking After Me (LAM) programmes for carers and free complementary therapy sessions for carers most under stress. Looking After Me is facilitated by a professional life coach ,delivering 4 weekly small group sessions to enable carers to take a step out of their caring role and consider their own goals & aspirations and group support to take positive steps forward to achieve these.

In November some successful projects were asked to apply for additional funding up to £50,000 to enable them to extend their current projects. Carers Wakefield & District was successful in being one of 5 projects chosen to be put forward for the People’s Project vote. This entailed the programmes being filmed by Calendar TV and the viewers were asked to vote for their preferred project. We were one of the successful 3 projects that the viewers voted for and received £35,961.

The additional funding is already proving to make a real difference to carers as we are now able to run a rolling programme of the Looking After Me programme, with carers who have attended, having gone on to gain employment after being out of work for a number of years. Some are now volunteers in a variety of roles and all report a huge confidence boost which has improved their overall wellbeing. Some of the comments from carers say “It’s been nice to think about me for a change”. “I have improved my confidence to take the next step as I’m important too”.

A Time Together group has been set up for carers who have attended the programmes to meet up to further develop the service and gain continued support.

A calendar will be produced to be sold to the public including carers, to raise additional funding this Christmas. There will be inspirational quotes from carers attached to the calendar.

    11

Also 60 carers will receive up to 8 free complementary therapy sessions from the Well Woman service over a 12 month period. This service has already been extremely well received. Carers report feeling valued and worthwhile, which in turn has improved their overall health and mood and capacity to continue caring.

10 carers will be referred for counselling to the Well Woman service as a priority and receive an urgent response.

CARE HOME VANGUARD Although this service commenced in 2015/16, it has really generated its own success in the past 12 months, with a new full-time post being created from April 2017 as a result.

As well as providing peer and one-to-one support to carers both inside and outside the care homes, the team have developed training for care home staff and relatives, and established vanguard carer support groups in Pontefract and Wakefield.

Feedback from carers has been extremely positive: “All the staff have been super, life has started having a meaning.” “Thank you so much for your support at yesterday’s meeting. You gave us both so much reassurance and perspective that it gives mum and me the confidence to get through it.” CARERS SUPPORT WORKER - DEMENTIA Similarly, although Jill O’Connell started this new role during last year she has significantly built on the initial success during the last 12 months.

A new support group has been established in Hemsworth, to add to the one already established in Castleford.

Dementia Friends and drop-in sessions have been held at Sandal and Hemsworth libraries.

Dementia training has been delivered to some of the Patient Participation Groups at GP surgeries.

3 one day training sessions for carers have been delivered in Wakefield and Hemsworth.

Once again with encouraging feedback: “It was as if you just helped me put mum’s jigsaw together. I understand her so much more.”
