EXPERIENCE, BOTH RETURNING AS WELL AS FROMTHE JUNIOR COLLEGE LEVEL, WILL BE A MAJORASSET FOR THE LADY STATESMEN BASKETBALLTEAM THIS WINTER AS PENN SEEKS TO MOVE UPTHE CONFERENCE LADDER.The Lady Statesmen are back on the hardwood after finishing10-22 a year ago, including a 2-14 mark in the Midwest Col-legiate Conference. Head Coach Brian Spielbauer expects hisplayers’ prior experience to help get Penn in contention for aleague title.

A large influx of new players, mostly from the junior collegeranks, will mix with some talented returners, including Subbert, for the makings of one of the deepest squads Spielbauer hashad at Penn.

POINT GUARD: Nancy Chicas, the back-up point guardfor the Lady Statesmen a year ago, will finally take over thereins of the offense and Spielbauer is very pleased with whathe has seen thus far.

Chicas averaged 5.1 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 19games last year.

Alicia Smith will challenge Chicas for the starting spot.

Jacelynn Smith will also add depth at the point.

SHOOTING GUARD: Subbert has been moved from thepower forward position to shooting guard as Spielbauer looksto get her more involved in the offense.

The junior averaged 17.2 points and 7.1 rebounds a seasonago and also led the team with 47 steals (second with 56 as-sists). She had 22 double-figure performances last year, in-cluding scoring over 30 points twice.

Samantha Darley and Shalimar Davis will add very qualitydepth at shooting guard.

SMALL FORWARD: Newcomer Carleigh Hobson topsthe team’s list of small forwards.

Fellow newcomer Ashton Perez will also compete with Hobsonfor the starting nod.

Raven House returns to provide athleticism and tenacious de-fense for the team. The sophomore is back to full strength aftersuffering a knee injury at the end of last season.

House was one of the best bench players for Penn a year ago, averaging 5.7 points and 2.2 rebounds and was second with 45steals in 2008-2009.

POWER FORWARD: Chandra Melaragno returns for theLady Statesmen and is seeking to make her last season herbest.

Melaragno averaged 5.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and had 42steals in 2008-2009.

Returners Khyia Lewis and Ashley Tindrell will join newcomersRachel Butler and Patricia O’Neill to also compete for the start-ing position as the Lady Statesmen look for the best fit at thepower forward position.

Lewis averaged 4.1 points and 3.3 rebounds last campaign.

CENTER: Janice Adams is the standout name among theathletes fighting for the starting center slot.

Adams was second on the team last season with 8.1 pointsper game and led the Lady Statesmen with 9.1 rebounds per.The senior, who had nine double-doubles of points and re-bounds, also had a team-best 22 blocks during the year.

Returner Melissa Johnson and junior college transfer AprilWilbur will also compete to be a starter in the post.

Johnson played in 17 games off the bench a year ago.

SCHEDULE: Penn’s non-conference slate is undoubtedlyone of the toughest that Spielbauer has ever composed.Matchups against 2008-2009 NAIA Division II national semifi-nalists Northwestern and College of the Ozarks (Mo.) highlightthe schedule, while the Lady Statesmen are also set to facefellow Division II national qualifier Jamestown (N.D.) and NAIADivision I national qualifiers William Woods (Mo.) and WilliamJewell (Mo.).

CONFERENCE: Spielbauer expects Grand View and St. Am-brose to be the favorites in the MCC, but sees his team as adarkhorse that will be grouped in with several other schoolsfighting for the third spot in the league.

“We are hoping to make a big step forward this year,” Spiel-bauer said. “I think our guard play will be our strength as ourposts continue to improve. We plan to play a fast-paced gameand should be fun to watch.”
