A natural forest is the best example of a system that is self-sustaining, resilient and highly efficient and very productive, because of the

following natural design principles that govern it.

Page 3: 25 cents To Save A Planet Campaign2

Principle #1

• The output of an element serves as input to another. (Zero or less waste.)

– The project envisions to contribute to the mitigation of global warming and to the adaptation to its impact. In doing so, it serves as an input and leverage to the cause of poverty alleviation and sustainable development.

Page 4: 25 cents To Save A Planet Campaign2

Principle #2• Each element is supported

by many other elements. (resiliency)

– The project will be supported by a coordinated effort of many stakeholders.

– Farmers, NGOs, LGUs, Donor Agencies, OFWs, buisness firms, etc

Page 5: 25 cents To Save A Planet Campaign2

Principle #3• Each element performs many functions. (efficiency)

– The project will serve the interests of many stakeholders:• Improves the economic well being of farmers (income and nutrition,

climate change adaptation)• Sustains financial resource requirement for a continuing presence

of NGOs in the communities it serve.• Psychic and monetary investments opportunities for OFWs• Enables LGUs and the national government to address energy and

transport fuel sufficiency and security.• Serve as preemptive measure against the impending peak oil. • Leverages the campaign for donations of donors• Carbon offsets of individuals and companies.• Fosters mass mobilization for global warming mitigation.

Page 6: 25 cents To Save A Planet Campaign2

Principle #4• Presence of multiple elements. But it is not the

number of elements that counts most, it is the number of beneficial connections between them. (dy-versity rather than diversity.

• Elements that centers on – Crop (Moringa Oleifiera) that produces leaves for food and

nutrition and seeds that produces bio-fuel energy. Bio-fuel that addresses peak oil and mitigates global warming by providing 78% less GHG emission; resolutions of these issues that can provide great financing and market opportunities; that can solve poverty and malnutrition; that can provide resources for more development actions ( diversification of farm and economic projects), and many more.

Page 7: 25 cents To Save A Planet Campaign2

Principle #5

• Reliance on elements that regenerates and not on finite resources. (biological).

– A project that mainly relies on regenerating bio-resources rather than extraction of finite resources.

Page 8: 25 cents To Save A Planet Campaign2

The Philippines can penetrate the international market

Seed Producers can amass a net income of approximately PhP 218,000– 521,000 per hectare/year @ PhP20/kg of seeds

It has a potential to generate an estimated 10,000 jobs/3,000 has. for Filipinos

Leaves for Animal Feed Fortification and Soybean Meal Substitution This can substitute half

of the country’s imports for soybean meal=US$120M.

In the long-run, the country can produce meat and milk high in protein and low in fats.

It can supply the demand in the local market –and possibly the international market!

Leaves Producers can have an estimated net income of PhP 1.43 Million per hectare/ year @ PhP5/kg of leaves

4. Mitigates Global warming

• Reduce greenhouse gas emissions– GHG reduction: Establishment bio-fuel feedstock production

base for bio-diesel using a nutrient dense crop: Moringa Olefeira. Shift to bio-diesel reduces GHG emission by 78% due to its close carbon cycle.

• Enhance carbon sinks– Carbon sink: Increasing the forest cover and therefore carbon

sink of the rural communities by increased planting of perennials.– Minimum or zero tillage

• Promotes and sustain Climate Change Awareness– Sustainability by creating a base of advocates among younger

generation: students and by turning local rural high schools as a springboard for advocacy in the local level.

• Bio-Fuel

Biodiesel is the best greenhouse gas mitigation strategy for today’s medium and heavy duty vehicles. A 1998 biodiesel lifecycle study, jointly sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, concluded biodiesel reduces net carbon dioxide emissions by 78 percent compared to petroleum diesel. This is due to biodiesel’s closed carbon cycle. The CO² released into the atmosphere when biodiesel is burned is recycled by growing plants, which are later processed into fuel.

5. Enhance farmers’ adaptive capacity?

1. Climate resilient crop.– Drought resistance

2. Stable source of income to farmers.

3. Climate proofs local nutritional intake.– Abundant local supply of nutrients– Resistance to diseases

4. Creates resources for farm and livelihood diversification.a) Feeds for animal integration

– Bio-gas digester

b) Women livelihood (leaves harvesting, processing)
