Dear Parents, WELCOME BACK Welcome back to what promises to be a very busy Term 2. We trust that everyone has had a happy and safe holiday break and that the children have returned well rested and prepared for a term full of activity and learning. A special welcome to the new families and students who have just joined our Pinewood community. We are a very active but friendly school and I am sure it won’t be long before you have settled in. SCHOOL WORKS During the holiday break we’ve had interactive TV’s installed into all of the Yr 1 classrooms and in the LOTE room/Mr Bolger’s classroom, making 8 new TV’s in total. We have also set up the new Junior STEM area with smart and appropriate sized tables and stools. It looks fantastic! This morning, Year 2 visited the new STEM area and learnt all about the properties of ‘Cubelets’. We’ve also had all of the schools electrical equipment tested and tagged and the carpets in high traffic areas have been streamed cleaned. These improvements not only make our school look more aesthetically pleasing, but also create a more interactive learning environment for the students.
ANZAC DAY CEREMONY Today our School Captain, Anoushka, Vice Captains
Simon and May and flag assistant Catherine,
conducted a wonderful ANZAC Day Commemoration
Service over the PA system. Thank you to the many
students who were able to bring a flower/ flowers to
place at the base of the flag poles. At the conclusion
of the service the ground beneath the flags was a
blaze of colour.

CONGRATULATIONS MR THOMAS Congratulations to Andrew and Emma Thomas who became the proud parents of their second son last week- ‘Rhys’. Rhys weighed in at a healthy 7 pound 6 ounces or 3440g. We look forward to meeting him soon. While Mr Thomas is on family leave, Mrs Helen Dent will be acting Assistant Principal.
LEAVE I will be taking a week’s Long Service Leave commencing on Friday 26th April. In my absence, Ms Sandra
McGregor will be Acting Principal.
STAFF CARPARK – not to be used as a drop off or pickup area for students. Parents are requested not to drive their cars into the Staff Carpark to drop off or pick up their children from the
school. As this is a very busy thoroughfare both before and after school entering and reversing out of this area
is an extremely dangerous practice.
Parents who usually drop off or pick up their children from the Toombah St. side of the school are also reminded
to encourage their children to enter and/or leave the school grounds via the pedestrian gates provided- rather
than via the Staff Carpark entrance. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation in this important student safety
matter.
REMINDER…-A LITTER FREE YARD - and a Litter Free Lunchbox- that’s the goal! As a whole school we are working towards gaining our third star of accreditation towards becoming an
environmentally, sustainable school. Pinewood has successfully gained accreditation of 2 of the stars from the
Sustainable Schools program. The first star, the Core Unit being about administration processes to measure and
promote sustainability and the second star being our energy management accreditation. The third star is based
on the area of environmental waste management, paper, plastic, etc.
We continue to encourage students to have a litter free lunchbox and ask that students bring their food to
school in a lunchbox using minimal wrappers. No wrapping, plastics, cardboard drink containers, etc. will be
allowed into the yard at recess or lunchtime. Rather, students have an opportunity to eat or organise their food
or drink before they go outside to play. Teachers in each class will assist students with this if necessary.
Students may take their lunchbox or drink bottle into the yard, as per usual, however it must be ‘litter free’- i.e.
contain no wrappers. Teachers are working with the students in the classrooms this week, continuing to
promote environmental awareness and ways we can manage the ‘waste’ at Pinewood PS.
The students belonging to the Pinewood ‘Green Team’ (our environmental and sustainability leaders) are
working hard to promote litter free lunches and a litter free yard. The Victorian Curriculum also encourages an
awareness of environmental sustainability through the teaching of Biological and Earth sciences, identifying
actions students could take at school that help to conserve or protect resources, e.g. turning off dripping taps,
minimalizing energy use and caring for the physical grounds and environment.
Bonjour, Pinewood Primary School community and welcome to a new term of French learning. Find below the vocabulary list for colours. Remember to collect every week’s words in a
little booklet and encourage your children to
revise all of them regularly.

ORGANISATION – OUR ‘YOU CAN DO IT’, WHOLE SCHOOL FOCUS FOR TERM 2.
‘The ability to organise space, time and possessions is an important, but often underestimated, personal suc-cess and leadership skill. Personal organisation has been identified as an essential achievement skill for children and young people.’ (Michael Grose, Parenting Program) Students at each year level will be focusing on devel-oping the skills and the habits of the mind encouraging the development of ‘Organisation’. Organisation, at school, means setting a goal to do your best in your school work, listening carefully to your teacher’s instructions, planning your time so that you are not rushed, having all your school supplies ready at a neat table, recording your projects and their due dates and planning when you are going to do your homework so that you have enough time to complete the task. Two ‘Positive Habits of the Mind’ that assist to devel-op a young person’s organisation include: Setting Goals- thinking that setting a goal can help me to be more successful at a task. Planning My Time - thinking about how long it will take me to do my school work and planning enough time to get it done. Karen Jenkin

Dear OSHClub families, Welcome back to Pinewood for Term 2. We are back fresh from a fantastic Holiday Program, that included highlights such as our excursion to Inflatable World, our Circus Workshop Incursion, and our Wheels Day, when students brought their bikes, scooters and skateboards to the program. Please be aware that there has been a change in fees, starting as of Term 2. This was a policy change brought in by OSHClub and unfortunately we have no control over this decision. The fees are now as follows: Before School Care $11.02 per session (an increase of $0.52 per session) After School Care $16.53 per session (an increase of $0.78 per session) Vacation Care $44.10 per session (an increase of $2.10 per session) Please contact us or visit us if you have any questions. On a final note, today, Wednesday the 24th of April, marks James' last day at Pinewood OSHClub. We wish him all the best with his employment in Canada, and thank him for everything he has done for our service since joining in December of 2017. Enjoy Term 2, see you at OSHClub!
