The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris LessmoreDirectors: WILLIAM JOYCE, BRANDON OLDENBURGWriter: William JoyceProducers: Lampton Enochs, Alissa Kantrow, Trish Farnsworth SmithUSA, Animation, 16 min, 2011SYNOPSIS: After a hurricane sweeps him away, Morris Lessmore discovers a magical library where he devotes his life to books.

Director WILLIAM JOYCE has achieved world-wide recognition as an author, illustrator, and leader in the digital animation industry. His projects have been sought after by every major animation studio including Disney, Fox/Blue Sky, and DreamWorks, He is a co-founder of Moonbot studios in Shreveport, LA.

Director BRANDON OLDENBURG is an award-winning illustrator, designer, sculptor, and film director. He is also a co-founder of Moonbot Studios, and recipient of the Distinguished Alumni of the year Award from the Ringling College of Art and Design. In 1995 he co-founded Reel FX Creative Studios, where he served as Senior Creative Director for 15 years, working with such clients as Pixar, Disney, and DreamWorks.

CurfewDirector: SHAWN CHRISTENSENWriter: Shawn ChristensenProducers: Damon Russell, Mara Kassin, Andrew NapierUSA, Narrative, 19 min, 2012SYNOPSIS: At the lowest point of his life, Richie gets a call from his estranged sister, asking him to look after his nine-year-old niece, Sophia, for a few hours.

Director SHAWN CHRISTENSEN graduated from Pratt Institute with a degree in illustration

and graphic design. He formed the indie rock band Stellastarr* and, while on tour, wrote and sold the screenplays for “Sidney Hall” and “Karma Coalition.” His short film “Brink” screened at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2011. He is currently attached to direct “Sidney Hall.”

Director ARNAUD BRISEBOIS has worked as the Head of the Art Department in films such as

“300,” “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow,” and “Fantastic 4.” Appreciated for his sharp creative acumen and eye, Brisebois has also been called upon as an Artistic Director for special effects in film and television. This is his first film.

Director FRANCIS LECLERC received critical acclaim for his first feature,”Une Jeune Fille a la Fenetra,” and in 2004 won Best Director awards at the Genie and the Jutra for

“Memories Affectives.” His work also includes the television series “Apparences,” and “Les Rescapes II.”

Following are the first eight films named Official Selections for our 2012 festival. Twenty-two additional films will be announced over the next two months, bringing the competition and public exhibition selection total to thirty films.

Voice OverDirector: MARTIN ROSETEWriter: Luiso BerdejoProducers: Koldo Zuazua, Sebastian Alvarez, the Rosete Brothers, Manuel Calvo

Spain, Narrative, 10 min, 2012SYNOPSIS: A French narrator jumps from one dramatic scene to another, confused about the story that he is trying to tell, and fighting with himself until he finally finds it.

Director MARTIN ROSETE was born in Spain. He directed his first 35mm short film,

“Revolution,” at the age of 21, which won more than 50 awards at film festivals worldwide. He studied Audiovisual Communication at Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Acting and Direction at the legendary San Antonio de los Banos International Film School in Cuba, and was invited to attend the First Talent Campus of the Berlin International Film Festival in 2004. He currently lives in New York City and is working on his first feature.

Fishing Without NetsDirector: CUTTER HODIERNEWriters: Cutter Hodierne, John HibeyProducer: John Hibey, Cutter Hoderine, Victor Shapiro, Raphael SwannUSA, Narrative, 15 min, 2011SYNOPSIS: A story of pirates in Somalia told from the perspective of the pirates.

Just before Director CUTTER HODIERNE was born, his family sold everything they owned, quit their jobs, and bought a 32-foot

cutter-rigged sailboat, for which he was named. He spent the first three years of his life sailing in the South Pacific Ocean. At age 22, he toured the world with U2, serving as their filmmaker on the road. At age 24, Hoderine traveled to East Africa to direct “Fishing Without Nets,” which he is now developing as a feature film.

A Morning StrollDirector: GRANT ORCHARDWriter: Grant OrchardProducers: Sue Goffe, Studio AKAUK, Animation, 7 min, 2011SYNOPSIS: When a New Yorker walks past a chicken on his morning stroll, we are left to wonder which one is the real city slicker.

Director GRANT ORCHARD joined Studio AKA in 1997, where he has gained world-wide attention for his idiosyncratic design. Orchard

has won two prestigious D&AD awards, and received recognition for his first independent short film, “Welcome to Glaringly.” In 2007 he created 10 mini-films for the Italian television channel QOOB, which interpret various sports in his unique, original, deceptively simple style.

Written In InkDirector: MARTIN RATHProducer: Martin MalatynskiPoland, Documentary, 12 min, 2011SYNOPSIS: This documentary about hope tells the story of a man trying to regain contact with his sister after 14 years of silence.

Director MARTIN RATH grew up in East Berlin. After getting expelled from school, he worked as a life-guard at the local swimming

pool. Later Martin attended Edinburgh College of Art before holding several jobs including a position at Edinburgh Road Services. After longer spells as a furniture mover in Norway and a carpenter in Iceland, he studied Directing at the National Polish Film School in Lodz. This is his first documentary.

Submissions for the 2012 competition are still being accepted through October 3rd. The next Official Selection Film announcement date is September 17th. Thirty films will eventually be named as selections. 24fps, now in its 14th year, is a curated exhibition and juried competition open to any and all filmmakers worldwide. Films must be of a running time of 20 minutes or less, produced after January 1, 2009, and be made outside the major studio system.

HatchDirector: CHRISTOPH KUSCHNIGWriters: Karl Goldblat, Christoph KuschnigProducer: Martin MaierAustria, Narrative, 18 min, 2012SYNOPSIS: A newborn’s destiny hangs in the balance, as grown-ups come to terms with what they cannot have.

Director CHRISTOPH KUSCHNIG is a graduate of the University of Applied Sciences in Salzburg and Columbia University’s Film

Graduate Program. He has directed acclaimed shorts, music videos, and commercials, and has also written screenplays and an award-winning Austrian web series. Christoph is a Fulbright Scholar, a Hollywood Foreign Press Association Award winner, and a National Board of Review Student Grant Recipient. “Hatch” is is thesis film at Columbia University, which he is currently developing into a feature.
