What’s involved?
Working full time - apprentices are employed for 30 hours or more.
Support in the workplace - you will achieve industry standard qualifications and develop new skills in the workplace.
Qualification structure - some programmes require college attendance and others are completed in the workplace.
How we will support you:
From the start of your programme, you will be supported by our experienced sector professionals.
Additional qualifications may be available such as CSCS testing.
There will be opportunities to take part in national skills competitions.

I have gained lots of new skills from my tutors and have also had the opportunity to take part in and win the SkillBuild UK regional competition and the Guild of Bricklayers North West competition which I am really proud of. After qualifying for the final, I was really pleased to have achieved a bronze medal at the national finals. I am now looking forward to competing in the SkillBuild UK Final in November.”

Apprenticeships Work
Apprentices combine working towards recognised qualifications, whilst gaining practical experience and skills in the workplace.
Apprenticeships are available from Level 2 to degree level: typically it takes one to two years to complete an apprenticeship however some may take longer due to the nature of the programme.

Who can do an apprenticeship?Apprenticeships are for people of all abilities who want to get into the world of work and gain skills, experience and qualifications on the job. The level of apprenticeship you start at will depend on your job role, previous qualifications and experience. As a guide the following GCSE or equivalent qualifications are required as a minimum.
Level 2 - A minimum of four 9-3 GCSE subject grades or equivalent, including English Language and Maths. Certain apprenticeships also require a good level of IT which can be assessed at interview.
Level 3 - A minimum of four 9-4 GCSE subject grades or equivalent, including English Language and Maths. Certain apprenticeships also require a good level of IT which can be assessed at interview.
Level 4 - A minimum of four 9-4 GCSE subject grades or equivalent, including English Language and Maths, plus a relevant Level 3 qualification. Certain apprenticeships also require a good level of IT which can be assessed at interview.

Hard working brickwork student and Harry Fairclough Construction Ltd apprentice Jordan Ireland has been recognised by industry specialists with a gold medal at both the SkillBuild North West Bricklaying Competition and the Guild of Bricklayers North West Competition.
Jordan’s success means that he qualified for both national finals and after impressing the judges at the recent Guild of Bricklayers Final, Jordan was awarded a bronze medal against tough competition from some of the best bricklayers across the country with his second national final due to take place later on in the year. Darren Moore, Programme Area Leader for Construction and Engineering at Riverside College, said “I am over the moon with what Jordan has achieved. Winning one major competition was great news but to continue with his winning streak is outstanding achievement! He has approached all of the competitions with a very professional attitude and it has paid o� for him and his employers Harry Fairclough Construction, who are very proud of what he has achieved.”
Students and sta� celebrated the opening of the outdoor activity area at St Michael’s Catholic Primary School in Widnes after they joined the community project and helped to make the dream of an adventurous outdoor space a reality for the primary pupils. At Riverside College we have a fleet of race proven vehicles that are prepared, maintained and raced during the Motorsport course which include Formula Renault open wheel race cars and Group N rally cars. You will be involved in high level research and development, and complete projects for high profile motorsport teams; including materials development using 3D printing. Two motorsport students from Riverside College have secured an apprenticeship with prestigious car company BAC Mono after impressing their new employer during work experience.
Tom Tunstall and Jamie Sillifant both completed work experience while studying on the Level 3 Motorsport course and after a gruelling recruitment process they are now planning their future within the motorsport industry.
A brand new IDEA Centre which introduces a unique facility o�ering students innovative training facilities which will prepare students for the Industry 4.0 trend of automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies has opened at Cronton Sixth Form.
Engineering students will be able to study and develop realistic robotic solutions with industry standard technology from FANUC. There are two fully integrated SMC manufacturing process systems in the workshop that will enable students to solve real manufacturing issues. Students will also be able to develop skills in programmable logic controllers, pneumatics and hydraulic engineering using FESTO bespoke training rigs.
The Motorsport course provides students with the skills to achieve in this highly competitive field. The two students are the first ever apprentices for the impressive car manufacturer.

At Riverside College you can progress through the levels from Entry Level to Level 3. Caitlin Fairbrother, a Level 3 Beauty student at Riverside College, is celebrating after an outstanding performance at the prestigious WorldSkills UK competition, earning first place in the regional heats and securing a place in the national finals.
A former pupil at Wade Deacon High School, Caitlin fought o� tough competition from some of the most talented beauty students in the North West to win first place in the ‘Beauty Therapy - Hands and Face’ regional heats, which took place at Tra�ord College.Her impressive performance and high score ensured a place at the national finals in Birmingham later this year.
Talented students at Riverside College wowed local employers with their creative skills at the annual ‘Hair, Beauty, Nails and Media Makeup Competition’. The full day event sees students compete in themed competitions to test the skills learned so far during their course.
The students worked hard to impress judges; Neil Anthony, of Neil Anthony Hairdressers, Mia Hogan, a former Riverside Student and tutor at Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy, Marisa Sterling, of Moda Nails & Beauty in Widnes, Kate Myler, freelance makeup artist and tutor, and Hayley Densmore, Freelance Hairdresser.
Caitlin commented, “I was shocked when I discovered I had won first place and I am looking forward to competing in the finals. I have learnt a lot about the competition, gained confidence and developed my skills which I will be able to use in the final.”
Suzanne McGucken, Hairdressing Tutor at Riverside College said, “The level of talent on display was fantastic. All of the students worked extremely hard throughout the day and it was tough to choose winners. We would like to thank all of the professional judges who helped to select the winning students.”

• Once you have decided which course you want to study you need to complete an application form.
APPLY NOW TO SECURE YOUR PLACE
Step 1: Fill in an application formYou can fill in a form by visiting www.riversidecollege.ac.uk and apply online or complete the application form on page 49.
Step 2: Set a dateOnce we receive your application form, you will receive an appointment for your admissions interview. This may take place at the college or in your school. At your interview you will have the opportunity to ensure that the course you have chosen is right for you and your future career goals.
Step 3: The O�erAt the end of your interview, if you and the interviewer decide that this is the right course for you, you will be o�ered a place at the college. Your o�er will be conditional upon you achieving certain grades in your GCSEs. You may also be required to attend college for an audition, portfolio event or skills testing.
Step 4: New Student DayYou will be invited to a New Student Day on Wednesday 4th July, where you will sample your subjects, meet tutors and fellow students to prepare you for the start of the term.
Step 5: EnrolmentIn August and once you have received your GCSE results you will be invited into college to complete your enrolment.
