Year 8 Science students have been studying the cell – the building blocks of all organisms. As part of their study the students made models of cells using plasticine, drink bottles, repurposed polystyrene balls and other recycled materials. A mini expo was held during lesson time to enable students to exhibit their work and allow their classmates to learn about different cell types as they moved around the different displays. The results for many groups were truly outstanding.

BADMINTON

Open BadmintonBlackfriars defeated CBC

Blacks defeated CBC convincingly on the scoresheet on Saturday but most of the games in singles and doubles went to three sets. Many of these sets were very close with our boys giving themselves plenty of opportunities to ‘close the deal’.

Matches were of a very high standard and played in traditional good spirit.

I thank these boys for their efforts in Term 1 and look forward to further competition in the final term.

BASKETBALL

Year 4/5 Basketball RedWPPS Warriors 28 defeated CBC 14

After a great first game we came up against a stronger opposition in what was a good learning experience for the team. The boys appeared a bit rusty, perhaps as a result of not playing in three weeks. While ball movement and creating space was a strength in our earlier game we struggled to move around and consequently pass the ball to open players, resulting in baskets being difficult to score. We improved our zone defence and we will look to score more in our final game of the term.

TENNIS

Drive TennisSt Michael’s 5 sets defeated CBC 4 sets (15 March)

A Wednesday afternoon venture down to the blue courts of Seaside Tennis club. This was a keenly contested affair with several of our players winning their matches.

Pierce Hynes 6–2: Brilliant effort from Pierce who worked his magic again against their No 1. Class always rises to the top.

Morgan Eyed 7–5: A great result against a top player. Morgan’s shot making and confidence on the rise.

Nick Davies 6–3: A well deserved win from Nick who played more conservatively and was too good in the end.

Hynes/Eyed 6–2: No 1 doubles – too good, too smart and exacting. Good to see these two working so well together.

CBC 8 sets defeated St Paul’s 1 set (18 March)

A win over the St Paul’s boys. Everything just clicked into gear and we were rewarded after recording some better form over the last few weeks.

All three doubles combinations won their matches.

Hynes/Edey 6–3; Farina/Marchioro 6–0; and Davies/Silbor 7–5.

Singles wins to Pierce Hynes 6–4, Aaron Marchioro 6–3, Morgan Edey 6–3, Nick Davies 7–6, Joe Farina 6–0

A very rewarding morning’s play. This team is now playing well and the value of being in this grade over the last few years is paying off for our younger boys.

Trinity 5 sets defeated CBC 4 sets (25 March)

This was a very entertaining morning’s tennis. The result could have gone either way, CBC leading 4–2 with 3 singles matches to go! Unfortunately, we couldn’t get a result in those latter matches but what a start!

Our new no 1 doubles combination of Pierce Hynes and Joe Farina won 6–4; Morgan Edey and Aaron Marchioro lasted to win 7–6 in a tie breaker and we also had 2 singles wins.

Fantastic win from Morgan Edey 6–1 who blasted his opponent off the court in a season best performance.

Joe Farina again won 6–2. Too good for an opponent who had beaten him regularly over the last few years.

Blackfriars 8 sets defeated CBC 1 set (1 April)

This was no joke! Blacks had the players, the focus and the team morale to completely overrun a CBC team well down on last week’s hot form. Three Year 10s back from their gruelling DOE camps didn’t help but you still have to stand up and be counted! There’s no where to hide on a tennis court!

Congratulations to Joe Farina – another gutsy win (our only win of the day) at No 3. I’m very proud of the way he went about the match even though he was hurting from too many waves at Middleton. The 6–2 scoreline suggested it was easy but it was not. Again Joe found a way to win against a stubborn opponent. Joe displays a competitive tenacity that is so important in individual sports.

Our second doubles team of Morgan Edey and Aaron Marchioro put in a very solid effort to match their opponents with good hitting and smart play at the net, eventually going down 4–6.

A special mention goes to Josh Silbor who competed as enthusiastically as ever but threw away chances at the end of his match. So close Josh!

And that was Term 1 Drive tennis. Some encouraging signs for the future. We are starting to gel as a team and I think there are good times ahead! Well done boys.

The following Year 10 students attended the Duke of Edinburgh - River Murray kayaking camp last week with Mr Horgan and Mr Mackereth. We stayed in a beautiful place and travelled up and down the creeks and estuaries in the Paringa area. The views were stunning and proved to be a wonderful distraction from the grunt and grind of the kayaking.

After the long bus trip and initial lagoon / creek kayak (in which Channy became the unfortunate recipient of the First to Capsize award) we reached our camping spot for the first night. Imagine the shock when we opened the tent bags and were faced with the absence of pegs!!! They were on pole tents and the pegs are vital to balance the tent and hold them in the ground.

After a tangier meal and some slick work by Caleb, Riley and Jacob K we started to make some progress. A superhuman effort by our guide Ruth – who kayaked back to the mainland in the dark to collect pegs from her house – and there were enough pegs for the boys to pitch their tents. The teachers had a wonderful night out under the stars (when the rain stopped).

On the second morning the boys really started to hit their straps. They were honing their camping skills and getting used to the idea of digging holes for toilets. The group was working as one and developing nicely. It was a long 8-hour kayaking trek and by the end of it we were all physically shattered. Mr Horgan stole the show with two capsizes but he had great support from Bailey, Luke and Daniel. They all took the opportunity to cool off after a hot day’s work. Channy and Jacob W were sensational rounding up the group and ensuring we stayed together and worked as a group. Alex N and Michael I shone through in the map reading skills.

The second night we were settled early with enough tents for everyone. The boys cooked and enjoyed a communal meal as the sun set. Felix was all over the stunning star display and the boys were amazed just how clear the sky becomes out of the big smoke. The behavior and comradery of the boys was generally excellent and the kayaking skills improved continually throughout our amazing journey. Daniel Petrilli had one final dip on the trip home up the Murray just to top off the camp nicely. The boys learnt skills that will be invaluable as they move into adulthood and the experiences they shared together have built lifetime bonds. This is what the DOE camps are all about.
