¿Qué comen los animales? by Ann Takman

Build BackgroundRead the title to the children and talk with them about what the animal in the cover photo is eating. Ask children what they know about what animals eat. Ask questions such as: ¿Qué está comiendo el conejo de la foto? ¿Qué animales han cuidado ustedes? ¿Qué les gusta comer a esos animales?

Introduce the TextGuide children through the text, noting important ideas and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary. Point out the repetition of the words Es un/una and (se) come in many sentences. Here are some suggestions:

Page 2: Explain that in this book, children will learn about the different things that different animals eat.

Page 4: Remind children that they can use information in the photos to help them read. Vayan a la página 4. ¿Qué animal hay en la foto? ¿Por qué está saltando? Miren la rama con atención. ¿Qué quiere atrapar la rana? Digan atrapar.

Target Comprehension SkillConclusions

Target Comprehension Skill Tell children that they can use details to fi gure out more

about the text. Model how to draw a conclusion:

Think Aloud

Practice the SkillHave children draw a conclusion from the book about animals that like to eat bugs.

Writing PromptRead aloud the following prompt. Have children write their response, using the writing prompt on page 6.

Think about what frogs and bats like to eat. Write about what you learned about these two animals.
