I’LL HAVE A TEA AND ??????????

The half time Cup of Tea is very much part of the routine as regards attending football matches but what do you have with your tea. In Scotland the staple diet is very much meat, especially steak, pies while south of the Border chips and the ubiquitous burgers, the latter fast becoming a major part of Restaurant menus, rather hold sway. But what do our European counterparts enjoy with their half time cuppa? In CROATIA the cry from the vendors is “Kostice, Kikiriki” which translates to Seeds and Peanuts while in TURKEY a “kofte ehmek,” which is rather like the meatballs favoured by Ikea cafes, is the favourite with a salty yogurt drink called an “ayran” as an occasional substitute for tea. Moving swiftly from Turkey to GREECE and the speciality at Panathinaikos and elsewhere is “Vromiko” which does not translate roughly as “Vomit” but as “filthy” and is made up of bread, bratwurst or kebab meat and French fries with loads of mustard and mayo. One for the connoisseurs! ESTONIA does not enjoy the warmest of climates and supporters there sensibly opt for hot soup and garlic bread with beef jerky. South to two of the warmer Countries and the supporters in SPAIN in their thousands are fans of the “boccadillo” as well as the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona. This is essentially a filled, and very filling, baguette and contrasts with the alternative option of seeds and nuts that result in tons of shells having to be cleared away by the Stadiums after the matches. Next door, so to speak, in PORTUGAL the choices seem perhaps more acceptable to English tastes with the “bifana” and “entremeadas” being particularly popular. The first is a well grilled pork steak sandwich and the second a sandwich filled with pork/bacon pieces. ITALY, inevitably, tends to be classier than most and a “salamella” is a grilled sausage sandwich flavoured with onions and paprika. No doubt that wine is probably also on the menu but there is absolutely no point in asking for a Bovril! No one will be surprised to learn that in GERMANY strong lager and bratwurst are the order of the (match)day though currywurst is also a strong favourite. In the oft colder climes of Scandinavia most will probably find the main fare in DENMARK’s Grounds very much to their taste. The “stadion platte” is a bread roll filled with two sausages and adorned with ketchup

and mustard of varying strengths. Next door in SWEDEN, what we know as hot dogs are equally popular but the locals are just as likely to opt for a “mazarin” which is an almond-paste filled cake -and the coffee, as an alternative to tea, is very, very, strong. Across to the FAROE ISLANDS where they keep it very simple with just coffee and sweets with the proceeds always going to youth football Just two more ports of call and firstly the home of cuisine, FRANCE. A large

Country and tastes vary across same but the favourite seems to be a “galette-saucisse” which is a thin pancake wrapped round a fried pork sausage and perhaps not as exotic as the Country’s reputation would suggest. Lastly the smallest can often be the best and SAN MARINO is certainly the smallest Country we have covered in footballing terms The good inhabitants of this small country like a “piadina” to go with their goals and that translates as a flatbread filled with cheese, ham and various vegetables which does sound more appetising than most. No mention of fish anywhere but overall you pay your money and take your choice. I am happy with the Cake and Sausage Rolls at two of the local grounds on my travels ! This is an article in a recent edition of the superb Portland United Programme which we have abridged for reasons of space and our thanks to Lin McKechnie and the Club for permission to use.

ROADWORKS NEWS

Part of the A36 is set to be shut from the early evening for a fortnight of drainage works, between 9 and 20 December from 19:00 until 06:00 in both directions from Slab Lane in Wellow – just north of the Lower Common Road/Canada Road roundabout and the Nisa Local – and run to the Ower roundabout. A signed diversion route is in place to send drivers onto the A27 and the A3090. Motorists will also be affected by another closure on the A36 from the M27 to the Ower roundabout. However, this will only be shut northbound, with the southbound lane still open. This closure will also be in place from December 9 to 20 between 19:00 and 06:00 each evening. Please allow for extra journey time if your journey would normally take you through these areas.

FC SANTA CLAUS

A seasonal update on something we touched upon this time last year. FC SANTA CLAUS is, or possibly was, a Football Club in Rovaniemi in Finland which is the Capital of Lapland, the “official” home of Santa Claus (the gentleman with the white whiskers as well as the Football Club) and a much favoured destination for viewing the Northern Lights. FA Santa Claus was founded in 1994 through a merger of two existing Clubs in Rovaniemi and in the ensuing twenty five years they have played either in the Finnish Second Division (Thirteen years) or the Third Division (twelve years). The Second Division, which is split in to various geographical sub-Divisions, is administered by the Finnish FA and the Third Division, similarly split, by the North Finland FA and in 2018 the Club finished in eleventh place in their Third Division section having been runners up the previous year. However, and one has to accept that this may be lack of information or the Internet failings of the writer, there seems to be no mention of them playing competitively in 2019, only a suggestion that they’d play some games at Christmas. They have been Third Division Champions on three occasions and Second Division Champions once, losing a play-off that perhaps prevented further promotion, and in 1994 they won the Midland Sun Cup. Again, information regarding this is sketchy but it is played annually in Northern Sweden and seemingly attracts entries from a number of Countries with such as Moscow Spartak featuring in the list of winners. The Stadium in Rovaniemi holds 4000 with nearly seventy five per cent under cover and the (understandably) artificial pitch is inside a very modern looking running track. A clip found on the Internet shows that, (again understandably) they play in red and white Arsenal style kit though the players looked to expend more energy than Mesut Ozil, possibly because of the temperature. As this is written on an exceedingly wet afternoon in North Hampshire the temperature in Rovaniemi is minus seventeen – which would perhaps test the very smart new Sydenhams League Coats. Rovaniemi is some five hundred miles due north of Helsinki and it is possible to fly there from Southampton or Manchester via Amsterdam and Helsinki with the option of travelling the last leg on a high speed train. The overall cost – a mere £600 plus. One hopes the Club will re-surface in due course, or is perhaps still playing, but it does look, on the face of it, that, sadly, FC Santa Claus will not be coming to Town this year.

MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS

Mike Robins writes HAMWORTHY UNITED 6-3 HYTHE & DIBDEN BAPTISM of fire for the visiting keeper Edas Juskelis on his first team debut in the Bournemouth Senior Cup, conceding a goal from a sloppy back pass that was collected by Dan CANN and tapped into an empty net with less than 30 seconds on my watch to open the scoring. Although Hythe harried their Premier Division hosts for a leveller it was the Hammers who extended their lead on 21 minutes after Cameron Munn, Ollie Davis and Ash Pope all having had ranging shots that weren’t far off target. MUNN was allowed to dribble into the penalty area evading several challenges stroking it beyond the advancing Juskelis into the corner of the net. It was soon three as the MUNN again found the net- this time drilling home from 18 yards into the net off the crossbar. Juskelis was powerless to stop the fourth as well, DAVIS with a great strike from wide on the right. The young keeper was tested again on 40 with both Cann and Munn perhaps unlucky not to add to their respective tallies. HT 4-0 Having made four changes at the break, Hythe got back into the game with the first attack of the second period when a Christos Papakonstantinou corner picked out a free Ryan HAYTER who made no mistake with a header from close range. Any thoughts of a comeback were quashed around 15 minutes later when POPE restored the four goal cushion. To their credit though Hythe continued to cause problems for the Hammers and it wasn’t too great a surprise when they made it 5-2 Zac WILLIS a half time sub hitting the target. Unfortunately the visitors tended to want just a little too much time on the ball and Hamworthy were able to absorb much of the pressure and with around 12 minutes left POPE made it 6-2, not without some controversy though. A long ball was played through and Cotton brought down Elliot Hartnell-Baker outside the area, the ball broke and was played in for a simple tap in. With time running out, HAYTER again found the net with a header from a corner, but it was too little too late and it’s the Hammers who go through to the semi-final. FT 6-3

MIDWEEK ROUNDUP

This could be the shortest review on record after the rains virtually decimated Tuesday’s scheduled Programme. Five matches in various competitions fell by the wayside (or in to the water) just leaving the Bournemouth Senior Cup Quarter Final at the County Ground. Those who turned out on a miserable evening weather wise were at least rewarded with some goals as Hamworthy United defeated Division One promotion hopefuls Hythe & Dibden by six goals to three. Cameron Munn and Ash Pope both scored twice for the home side with Ryan Hayter claiming two for the visitors. On Wednesday the Southampton Senior Cup clash between Fawley and Lymington fell victim to the weather leaving just Downton’s Wiltshire Senior Cup tie to go ahead. This involved The Robins travelling to Western League Division One Corsham, and it was the home side who progressed to the last four of the Competition via a three one victory with Robbie Owen claiming Downton’s consolation goal. This is the only Quarter Final completed to date and the League are still represented by Bemerton Heath and Laverstock & Ford. And that was the Midweek.

WEEKEND MATCH REPORTS

Gary Day writes AFC STONEHAM 2-0 FLEET TOWN THE Solent University FC game was called-off at 2pm and it was a sunny afternoon and therefore too nice to consider anything else but a game of football. So, a quick check of the league website and it was a short drive to Eastleigh to make what might be my final visit to this ground as AFC Stoneham faced Fleet Town. Stoneham were promoted from Division 1 last season whilst Fleet arrived into the Wessex Premier having been relegated from the Southern League, so this looked an interesting match-up. The early sparring was fairly even but Stoneham had the first chance when a long throw was hurled into the visitors’ box and Clarke, who’d joined the attack, tried a spectacular overhead effort from 8-yards but Fleet keeper Upward lived up to his name by tipping over. At the other end, a dangerous low ball was played in from the right and Osim looked to have a decent chance but lost his footing on the damp surface and the ball was cleared. Oram tried a low distant effort for Town which forced home keeper Parker-Trott to push out. Upward was called into action again to save Palmer’s attempt from close range and it appeared that the Stoneham man was then wrestled to the ground as the ball came back in. Following a brief delay and

Page 10: #24 Ne… · TURKEY a “kofte ehmek,” which is rather like the meatballs favoured by Ikea cafes, is the favourite with a salty yogurt drink called an “ayran” as an occasional

consultation with his assistant, referee Paul Barber decided to restart play with a drop ball, Fleet were a bit fortunate there. HT 0-0 Stoneham went on the offensive with Jiminez driving over from a tight angle. The Purples went ahead soon after when the referee allowed an advantage from a foul and the ball immediately went to CLEMENTS whose shot picked up a deflection which helped it to beat the keeper. Fleet looked to hit back but Wensley drove

over when a long throw wasn’t effectively cleared by the home defence. Clements was close to a second goal, having cut in from the right, his shot went just past the far post. Smith tried a distant effort for Town which was off target, but it was Stoneham who added a second on 78 minutes. Clements was again involved, playing a delicious pass to sub HILLS who beat the keeper with a neat composed finish. Fleet had a penalty shout when Smith tumbled over from a heavy challenge but there was nothing given. Stoneham should have

added a third when Upward charged out to the touchline but the impressive Clements skipped past his challenge and played it to Welch and it then went on to Manning who, with the keeper still struggling to get in position, fired past the post. A Fleet free-kick broke down and Clements collected and made a great run and briefly got past Upward but credit to the Fleet keeper who recovered to block the shot. It was a fair outcome overall as the Fleet keeper was the busier of the two. Credit to the teams overall; it was played in a fine spirit as, except for a possible penalty turned down for each side, there was no ‘rough stuff’ or dissent to report. As Stoneham are set to move to a new complex, my 46th visit here could be my last, but the memories will remain. FT 2-0 John Gorman writes ALTON 3-1 WHITCHURCH UNITED THIS was fourth against seventh in the table and the result reflected the League position but there were perhaps not three goals between the two sides. But there was a difference and a telling one. Whitchurch defended well, competed as equals in midfield but fell away in the final third of the pitch. Apart from one spell in the second half they never seriously threatened the home goal whereas Alton looked dangerous throughout. The game was slow to get in to its stride though Alton had two early free kicks from dangerous positions with the first headed wide at the far post and the second too close to the goalkeeper. Whitchurch, like most visiting sides, took time to adjust to the pace of the pitch with too many forward balls overhit with the home side surprisingly also guilty, and the first real threat was a shot come cross from Matt Benham that bounced back off the far post with keeper Will Barnett struggling but the follow up was well blocked by a Whitchurch defender. Barnett was then forced to race from his area to head clear before the first scare at the other end saw home keeper Justin Courtnage save at Ryan Long’s feet after confusion with his defence as to who should deal with the through ball. A dangerous looking home attack was halted by the referee bringing play back some thirty yards to give them a free kick in their own half before the deadlock was broken with the half hour mark in sight. A free kick was hoisted in to the area from the right touchline, headed down at the far post, and Scott SANDERSON’s shot on the turn found the bottom corner. An unnecessary flare up by the dug outs saw a justified yellow card for the visitors’ Aaron Randall and one for the home side’s George Bowerman who appeared to most to be very much the innocent party. The home side were now monopolising possession with shots from Steve Black and Liam Knight inches too high or wide and free header from a corner going the wrong side of the post. Whitchurch were struggling once they reached sight of the home penalty area but would not have been too despondent at a one goal deficit at the break – only to concede a second goal with virtually the last kick of the half. Bowerman’s through ball sent Knight clear though there seemed little certainty he would catch the ball, which was running wide of goal, but Barnett thought otherwise and raced from his line to

comprehensively fell the forward and earn himself a caution and Alton a penalty kick. This was coolly converted by Phil MOORE and the home side’s tea would have tasted just that little bit sweeter. HT 2-0 On the re-start Long cleverly provided a shooting chance for Nick Yeomans with Courtnage at full stretch to save and Lloyd Thompson’s attempted lob, when Courtnage strayed from his line, was not very far away. the visitors, perhaps “stirred” at half time, enjoyed a good spell of possession but without any end result. Long’s persistence took him clear on the right but his inviting cross found a dearth of yellow shirts in the area and there was a carbon copy a couple of minutes later when Thompson produced a similar cross – simply a lack of support. Yeomans and Thompson combined neatly with the latter foiled by the keeper’s legs but it was Alton who still looked the more dangerous. The ball was worked, Rugby style, from left to right to find Black unmarked but the shot was straight at Barnett. The keeper tipped a header from Oli Graham over the bar before Whitchurch broke on the left through Yeomans – he may well have been given offside had the Assistant been in line – but the ball was slid past the advancing keeper and the outside of the post. With ten minutes remaining it was in effect game over as the visiting defence for once got their bearings wrong and substitute Luke PERKINS had the time and space to beat the advancing Barnett. Randall, already cautioned, escaped with a warning after a none too clever challenge and with the home side three goals to the good the game drifted to a gentle, and cold, conclusion. This was the home side’s sixth win in a row and with other results going their way they now sit two points clear at the top of the Table while Whitchurch have to re-group after a third successive defeat. FT 3-0

A restricted programme across our Step 7 neighbours, so just space for the top five in each of the three leagues. Just the two League games played in the Dorset Premier, where Corfe Castle beat basement side Sherborne Reserves whilst Dorchester Sports also scored four but conceded three against visitors Swanage but the points are enough to see them go fourth. Stockbridge lost by the odd goal of five against Winchester Castle but stay fifth and Overton United had a single goal victory at Clanfield in the only other league game played I the Hampshire Premier. Things were slightly better in the north where three Wiltshire Senior games went ahead. Melksham’s second team won by the best of five at Corsham, but at the top Shrewton United go second courtesy of a 4-2 win over Kintbury. At the foot former members Pewsey Vale collected their first points of the season, sharing two goals with visitors Frome Collegians. The weather also affected the Bet Victor Southern League, Blackfield & Langley went down to a single goal reverse at Gang Warily to Beaconsfield Town, whilst Gosport Borough won by the same score against Harrow Borough. SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 24

WEEK TWENTY ROUND UP

very interesting Saturday in respect of the movements in the respective Tables and a good one with regard to the number of games played, given the weather in the latter part of the week. Only two postponements and Baffins Milton Rovers must be getting concerned at the number of home fixtures

they still have to fulfil, having not played on their own ground since early November. The second postponement was an extremely late call-off at Solent University which did few favours to anyone. In the Premier Division Alresford remain out in front, though their lead was reduced by one point, but there was much shuffling of positions among the chasing pack. The leaders, having lost at Portland last week, faced another difficult afternoon at Christchurch and both sides may have been happy with the one all draw. There was a similar result at the Weyline Stadium where goals from Bailey Rowe and John McKie ensured that Portland and Hamble Club claimed a point apiece and remained very much in the hunt. These two results enabled AFC Stoneham to climb in to second place in the table following their two goal defeat of Feet Town, their sixth victory in their last seven matches. AFC Portchester kept themselves in the frame with a narrow single goal victory at Shaftesbury, Owen Fee’s goal making it four wins in a row on the road for Mick Catlin’s side. Lymington and Horndean shared two goals and the points at the Sports Ground, Dom Falco on target again for the home side, while Fareham Town maintained their fine home form with three different names on the score sheet in their victory over Hamworthy United. Bashley, not for the first time, attracted the largest attendance of the day and increased Cowes Sports’ woes with Harry McGrath scoring twice in their three nil success but Brockenhurst slipped again, going down three one at Tadley, a welcome win for the home side for whom Clive Makoni sored all three goals. The outcome of all the above is that Alresford still lead the table by six points with three points covering AFC Stoneham, AFC Portchester, Hamble Club, Christchurch and Portland. With neither Bournemouth or Amesbury in action matters at the other end of the table remained very largely unchanged. The seemingly perpetual game of Musical Chairs at the top of Division One shows no sign of changing and with the morning’s leaders, US Portsmouth not in action, there was always likely to be a new name at the top and so it proved with Alton taking the “yellow jersey” for the first time, courtesy of a three goal win over Whitchurch with, as usual, three different scorers, Downton, perhaps surprisingly, were held to a two all draw at Wick Lane by East Cowes Vics – a very good point for the Island side – whilst Hythe & Dibden went down for only the second time in the league, losing by the odd goal in three against Newport at Whippingham. A good day for the Island’s Division One sides. Andover New Street kept themselves in contention with a two one win at Ringwood, a goal for Rafael Ramos on his debut, while Bemerton scored eight without reply against Follands, who have now conceded in excess of fifty goals in the league, although late coming in Justin Bennett again amongst the goals bagging four and George Hallahan adding a hat trick. Petersfield notched up their third draw in a row, one all at home to Laverstock & Ford, and Romsey found their shooting boots at Fawley, Liam Magee scoring a hat trick in their five two victory. New Milton earned a useful point in a one all draw at Andover Town and finally Verwood produced probably their best League performance to date with a five two win over Totton & Eling at Potterne Park. Callum Butler scored three and Lee Vint two in what was only Verwood’s second win at home while their visitors have collected just one point from their last five away matches. So, as previously stated Alton now head the table by two points with three points covering the next five Clubs - but that could all change again in seven days’ time. Thanks to all who worked to get their pitches playable and for all the information provided.
