QSR Visioning Day
Next Tuesday the chairs of the seven review teams, parents who
have been involved in the QSR process and representave of the
P and C Associaon, will meet to report on findings and start to
develop the school's 2015-2018 Strategic Plan. A key element of
the process will be to determine priories for school development
through the creaon of a clear picture of the school in the future.
Last Friday a Discipline Audit was undertaken at Bald Hills State School. This
audit, a requirement of the QSR undertaken by an officer external to the school,
evaluated the systems and pracces we have in place to ensure we are
maintaining an engaged learning environment across five dimensions of creang
a culture of learning. We are awaing the full report, which will be placed on the
school website in the next few weeks, but the feedback provided at the
conclusion of the day was very posive. The SWPBS commi4ee, indeed all our
staff, can be proud of the audit findings!
Another set of data to inform the visioning day will be outcomes of a process we
ran with students in Year 5-7 last term. The students idenfied the top three
strengths of the school as being the teachers, that the school parcipates in inter
school sport, and the science project being trialled in the school this year.
The three areas the students would like to see improvement in are the use of
Informaon and Communicaon Technologies, in the development of more
sporng facilies, including a pool, and higher quality toilets!
I look forward to being able to report back to the wider school community the
outcomes of this process in the weeks ahead.
School Opinion Survey
Parents/Caregivers, school staff and the representave sample of students are
encouraged to take part in this year’s School Opinion Survey and share their
opinions about what this school does well and how this school can improve.
Access details for the Parent/Caregiver Survey have been sent home with
students—these are not linked to individuals, and you cannot be idenfied in the
survey results that will be reported back to the school, or by the department.
Parents/caregivers are welcome to complete their survey online at the school if
you do not have access to the internet at home. The survey is open unl open
unl 3 August 2014.

Building resilience in our children
Last term some of our classes were looking
at the concept of resilience — what is
resilience and how can you adopt a
resilient approach when things are not
going smoothly?
Some children are naturally resilient. Their
personalies and temperament means
that they already have the tendency to get
straight back up aAer a disappointment,
frustraon or setback. Although not every
child may be naturally resilient, the skills of
resilience can be taught, pracsed and
developed.
Experts, like Michael Grose, tell us that
resilient children have four basic skill sets
— independence, problem-solving,
opmism and social connecon. He also
says that parents can help support and
nurture resilience in their children by:
• Having a posive aFtude them-
selves. It is import for parents to
model a ‘you can do it’ aFtude for
your child to support their ability to
bounce back when they face diffi-
cules.
• Looking for teachable moments.
Many of children’s learning oppor-
tunies are disguised as problems.
Parents should make the most of
these opportunies so that children
can grow and learn from some of
the challenges they face.
Michael Grose provides many ideas for
parents to coach and support their
children and says this support and teaching
is an ongoing process. For more
