While it is a time for celebrations, let us also stay vigilant during this period. Singapore has just confirmed its first case of the Wuhan virus. For those of us who have gone through the SARS period, it brings forth tense memories. We are better prepared now with our experience gained from handling SARS. Yet, being vigilant and staying clean and hygienic is what we ought to be doing in order to curb the spread of this virus. Washing hands before and after eating, washing hands after going to the toilet have been emphasised to the students. To many of us going visiting during the Chinese New Year celebrations, we are often tempted to take a bite of the various goodies offered at homes immediately. Using a hand sanitiser or washing your hands before you take a bite is something that helps ensure that you are providing a good role model to your child and more importantly keeping your child and yourself safe, though it may appear inconvenient. Please also ensure that your child has and brings a working thermometer to school as there is a possibility of regular temperature taking once they return to school after the Chinese New Year holidays. I would also like to once again welcome the P1 students and parents. The P1s this year seem to have adjusted very quickly to the school routines and in my many conversations with them, they say that they are happy to come to school. As P1 parents, please do sign up with the PSG if you have not done so as it is an excellent way of getting to know the school as well as contributing back to the school in order for us to organise activities for them. The school would like to express our sincere appreciation to our team of parents from our Parent-Support Group for their help with our Primary 1 students at the beginning of the school term as well as for their active support in 2019. We would like to encourage more parents to join our Parent-Support Group. Please download a copy of the application form from the school website or request for a form from the General Office through your child. Completed forms are to be submitted to the General Office. IN TOUCH 01/2020

Dear Parents/Guardians In BPPS, we believe that in providing a quality holistic education to our students, a strong partnership between school and its stakeholders, including parents, is a vital ingredient in the recipe for success of every BPPS student. It was a memorable 2019 for us and the achievements of the school would not have been possible without the collective dedication and efforts of our staff and your partnership with us. School Hours Please be reminded that curriculum hours are as follows:

7.30 a.m. - 1.30 p.m.

All students should attend school punctually and regularly throughout the year. They are expected to be in school by 7.30 a.m. Absence from school must be supported with a medical certificate or a letter from the child’s parent.

Punctuality Being punctual is a mark of respect and self-discipline. It is of paramount importance that students learn the value of time and take responsibility for their time management. By attending school on time, they will be able to start the day right and set the tone for learning. All students are expected to be punctual for school and school-organised programmes/activities at all times. We hope you can work with us in instilling the importance of punctuality by ensuring that your child reports to school on time. Some of the strategies that you may find useful include:

Setting a regular bed time routine so that your child/ward receives plenty of rest and does not struggle to get out of bed in the morning

Packing his/her school bag and getting his/her school attire ready the night before

Making time for breakfast before leaving for school

School attire Parents can find the school rules and regulations pertaining to the school uniform on page 6 of the student’s diary. We wish to highlight the following: Uniform Students must have their name tags below the school crest, on the left side of their uniforms. The name tags are to be sewn on the pockets of the shirt. All students must be in their school uniform at all times. P.E. attire is only permitted on the days when the student has P.E., CCA or PAL. Hair and accessories Boys’ hair has to be short and neat. The fringe should not touch the eyebrows. The hair at the side should not touch the ears and the hair at the back should not touch the collar. Girls’ hair should be neat and tidy. The fringe should not touch the eyebrows. Hair should be neatly tied up using hair accessories which are black or green only. Girls should only wear simple black ear studs. No other accessories/jewellery are allowed. Shoes Students may only wear white socks and shoes. Character and Citizenship Expectations As the school works closely with parents to educate students on values and expected behaviours, we wish to send a consistent message about the behavioural expectations we have of the students. The behavioural expectations are progressive and the expectations naturally increase as the students move on to the upper levels. You will be able to find the Character and Citizenship Expectations on page 8 of the student’s diary. These expectations are taken into account when considering a student’s conduct grade in the report book. The school hopes that parents will find time to constantly speak to their children about what the school expects of them at the different stages in BPPS. Class rules Every student in BPPS is expected to follow the 5 Golden Rules in the classroom. We hope to be consistent in our expectations in every classroom. As such, every student is expected to abide by the 5 Golden Rules. 5 Golden Rules

1. Listen and follow teachers’ instructions 2. Raise your hand and wait for permission to speak 3. Stay in your seat unless you have permission to do otherwise 4. Keep your hands, your feet, or any object to yourself 5. Use appropriate language

Mobile Phone Policy In order not to disrupt the teaching and learning environment of the school, students are strongly discouraged from bringing their mobile phones to school. Please refer to page 11 of the student’s diary for the details of the school Mobile Phone Policy. We seek parents support to read and fully understand the contents of this policy.

Being responsible for their belongings

Being responsible for their belongings is one of the fundamental life skills that a child needs

to acquire. The school discourages parents/domestic helpers who deliver items to students

during school hours.

We seek your cooperation in helping your child to learn to be responsible for their belongings.

Please do not deliver items (such as food, books and stationeries) to your child. Students are

also not allowed to contact their parents to deliver items that they have forgotten to bring.

Please note that we will turn away parents who bring books or stationery to the school.

Students who have forgotten to bring money for recess or lunch have been told to borrow

money from their teachers and pay them the next day.

Gifted Education Programme (GEP) Screening Test (Only for P3 students) The Gifted Education Branch of the Ministry of Education will be conducting the GEP Screening Test on Wednesday, 19 August 2020. The test is open to all P3 students and will be based on what students have learnt from Primary 1 to Primary 3 in the English Language and Mathematics syllabi. This test is designed to identify students with high intellectual potential. Let us be mindful that we do not put unnecessary pressure on our children and there is no need to have any extra or special preparation for this screening test. A separate letter will be issued to all P3 parents in August. Student Learning Space (SLS) The SLS is an online platform with tools and curriculum-aligned resources for all students to learn at their own pace and collaboratively. With the SLS, students can take greater ownership of their learning and pick up skills and habits that prepare them for lifelong learning. Back to school: Expecting the unexpected 06 JAN 2020

Your child’s heading off to school and you’ve prepared them for every possibility. What could go wrong, right? Wrong, says Neo Wen Tong, a mother of two, as she shares her tips for handling unexpected situations.

The excitement of the first two days of school is over and lessons will be on in full swing. It’s finally time to breathe a little easier, and let your child ease themselves into the pace of school again. You’ve been prepping them for a week before school started so it’ll be a breeze for them to settle right in, right?

The truth is, despite your best effort, some unexpected situations may still crop up. Your child may forget to bring something (water bottle, lunchbox, wallet, book, etc.) to school, not want to get up in the morning, come home with the sniffles or a cough, miss the school bus, and find lessons hard to understand… The list can go on.

These situations can be frustrating, for both parents and children. Here are a few tips on how you can handle these situations.

“I forgot to bring…”

Okay, so this may not be completely unexpected. But instead of going straight to your child’s rescue, coach them to solve the problem on their own or approach an adult in school for help instead. If they forgot their water bottle, the water cooler in school could tide them over. If they forgot their lunchbox or had no money for recess, they could ask a teacher for help. Sometimes, they learn best through making mistakes and sorting out their own problems.

“I don’t want to get up.”

You have already enforced an earlier bedtime, and prepped your child’s schoolbag, snack, and uniform with them the night before. But in the morning, the struggle to get up on time is still very real. After more than a month of sleeping in, it is understandable. Instead of using a beeping alarm clock, try playing some upbeat music that your child enjoys and turning on some lights in the house so it is no longer dark. If all else fails, try (gently) wiping your child’s face with a damp washcloth. These tips could also work on a spouse.

Sniffles and coughs

New school year, new classmates, and new round of viruses? To help prevent your child falling sick right at the start of the school year, keep their immune system strong. Make sure they have enough Vitamin C, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, drink plenty of water, and sleep enough every day. No harm in applying the same routine to everyone in the family too!

“I missed the school bus!”

Missing the school bus home could be a scary experience, especially for those new to primary school. If you receive such a call from your child, do your best to not panic (we know it is not easy). Make sure that they are with a teacher or another adult in school while you make alternative arrangements for pick-up. Later, when you see them at home, revisit the incident and let them know that you are proud of them for being able to handle the situation, and discuss how to avoid it in future.

“I don’t know what the teacher is teaching.”

Tempting as it may be to unleash your inner tiger-mum (or dad), take a breath (or several) and have a chat with your child on why they are feeling this way. They are learning more, and more quickly than they might be used to. Let them know that you are there to listen and help. Support comes in many forms. Set small achievable goals to help them understand their work. Give lots of hugs. Help them to build their confidence and a healthy self-esteem and it will work wonders.

Thank you. Mr Bucktha Seelan Principal

Guide to SLS Account Management – Part B Frequently Asked Questions

Q1 : I have forgotten my password. What should I do?

Please refer to paragraphs 10-14 in Part A. You may refer to go.gov.sg/loginissues for all login issues.

Q2 : I have forgotten my username. What should I do?

The format of your user name is a combination of the first 5 characters of your Name, the last 4 digits and the letter of your NRIC/FIN/BC, e.g. (RACHE1234Z).

In rare cases, two or more students might share the same 10 characters. In such cases, their username may be affixed with a number, e.g. (RACHE1234Z_01).

If you are still not sure of your username, please approach your teacher.

Q3 : My account has been locked. What should I do?

Your account will be soft-locked after 6 attempts to log in with an incorrect password.

Please approach your teacher to reset your password.

Q4 : I used the “Password Reset Link” method but I cannot find my password reset email. What can I do?

If you cannot see the email in your inbox, it may be in the spam or junk email folder. It is also possible that you have not keyed in or verified the email address in SLS.

Note: The “Reset Password” URL in the email will expire within 20 minutes. If the URL has expired, go to the login page and select "Forgot Password" to try again.

Q5 : Can I change the security questions?

Students can log in to SLS to change the answers to their security questions. However the questions are fixed.

Q6 : What are the Operating System and Browser Requirements for SLS?

SLS is accessible through internet browsers on either Windows PC, Mac, iPad or Android tablets. For a good user experience, tablets should have a screen size of at least 7 inches. However, a small number of resources may not work on tablets due to missing plugins. Currently, SLS is not fully optimised to display on mobile phones even though users can access the system and resources. The recommended operating systems and browsers are:
