UNI RETURNS TO MCLEOD CENTER TO TAKE ON INDIANA STATEThe University of Northern Iowa men’s basketball team (11-12 over-all, 3-8 MVC) returns to the McLeod Center Saturday to take on the Indi-ana State Sycamores (10-13 overall, 5-6 MVC). Tip is set for 3 p.m.

BROADCAST INFORMATIONSaturday’s Indiana State-UNI game will be shown live on the Missouri Valley Conference TV Network. Brad Wells (play-by-play) and Kevin Lehman (analyst) will call the action in the McLeod Center. Clearances for the game in-clude: Fox Sports Midwest and NBC Sports Chicago+. The game can also be seen ESPN3 nationally but it will be blacked out in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Missouri. It can also be streamed on the Fox Sports GO app.

INDIANA STATE SYCAMORESIndiana State enters the McLeod Center having lost three straight contests. The Sycamores are 3-6 on the road this season with their wins coming against Indiana (90-69), Loyola (61-57) and Evansville (71-66). Indiana State is led in scoring by Jordan Barnes (17.6 ppg), Brenton Scott (14.9 ppg) and Qiydar Davis (10.6 ppg). Barnes ranks No. 4 in the nation in three-point field goals made (87).

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. INDIANA STIndiana State owns a 29-26 lead over UNI in the all-time series. UNI has won three straight matchups vs. Indiana State in Cedar Falls. The Sycamores have posted four wins in the McLeod Center - the most by any current member of the Missouri Valley Conference. UNI head coach Ben Jacobson is 12-12 vs. Indiana State.

IN OUR LAST MEETINGUNI had rallied from a five-point deficit in the final 20 seconds to knot the score at 67-67 on a three-pointer from Wyatt Lohaus and a layup by

Tywhon Pickford after a steal when the teams met in the Hulman Center on Jan. 10. Indiana State’s Jordan Barnes brought the ball down the floor with the score tied at 67-67 and launched a three-pointer that was missed, but the errant shot was tipped in by Brandon Murphy as the buzzer sounded to give the Sycamores a two-point win.

PHYFE FEASTING IN MVC PLAYUNI freshmen forward Austin Phyfe is shooting 72.7 percent from the field (16-of-22 FGs) during Missouri Valley Conference play.

Phyfe made his first career start vs. Valparaiso on Jan. 13. Phyfe entered the Valpo game having scored 27 total points in the season - including only 11 points in MVC play. Following his first start vs. Val-po, Phyfe has scored 34 points for the Panthers. Phyfe has made 14 of his last 17 field goal attempts and has drained 13 consecutive free throws entering Saturday’s game vs. Indi-ana State.

HEAD COACH BEN JACOBSON

12th Year at UNIOverall Record: 245-146

UNI head coach Ben Jacobson personifies class and dignity on and off the floor as the leader of the Panther men’s basketball team. Following the 2016-17 season, Ja-cobson was awarded a two-year contract extension that will run through March 31, 2027. Jacobson, 47, is the UNI men’s bas-ketball program’s all-time wins leader with 245 victories in 12 seasons. He has guided the Panthers to four NCAA Tour-nament appearances and four NCAA vic-tories. He is also a three-time MVC Coach of the Year award recipient. Jacobson has guided the Panthers to postseason play in seven of his 11 sea-sons as head coach, including four trips to the NCAA Tournament (2009, 2010, 2015 and 2016). UNI reached the Sweet 16 in 2010 following wins over UNLV and No. 1-ranked Kansas. UNI has recorded at least one victory in each of its last three NCAA Tournament appearances. UNI has placed in the upper half of the MVC standings in 14 straight seasons.Jacobson has guided UNI to a top-four finish in the final MVC standings in nine consecutive seasons. He is the only coach in the history of the MVC to have recorded two wins over two different No. 1-ranked teams (Kansas, North Carolina). A native of Mayville, N.D., Jacobson graduated from Mayville-Portland High School in 1989 as valedictorian. He re-ceived his bachelor’s degree in physical education from the University of North Dakota in 1994. Jacobson and his wife, Dawn, have two children, Hunter (14) and Tanner (12).

MCLEOD CENTER UNI is playing its 12th season in the McLeod Center and the Panthers have made winning a priority in their home venue. UNI has posted an all-time mark of 142-38 (.789) in games played in the McLeod Center. UNI secured a school-record 16 home wins in the 2012-13 season. UNI has posted a trio of perfect home seasons since moving to NCAA Division I. UNI was a perfect 14-0 in both the 1983-84 and 2009-10 seasons and then UNI notched a 15-0 mark at home in 2014-15. UNI set its home-court win streak of 21 consecutive victories between the 2008-09 and 2010-11 seasons. The McLeod Center opened in November 2006.

TRAILED AT THE HALFUNI posted its first win of the sea-son when trailing at the half against Drake. The Bulldogs held a 29-26 lead over the Panthers. UNI outscored Drake in the sec-ond half, 42-25, en route to a 68-54 victory in the McLeod Center. UNI is 1-3 this season when trailing at the break. The Panthers posted five wins in 2016-17 when trailing at the intermission.

KOCH’S EFFICIENCY VS DRAKESenior Bennett Koch has been a model of efficiency against Drake the last two seasons in the McLeod Center. Koch scored a team-high 19 points while shooting 7-of-11 from the field vs. the Bulldogs on Tues-day in the McLeod Center. Last season in the McLeod Center, Koch went 8-of-8 from the field and scored 21 points in a 79-60 Panther win. Over the last two seasons at home vs. Drake, Koch has shot 15-of-19 from the field and averaged 20.0 points per game.

TWO FRESHMEN WITH 20 PTSFor the first time since Jan. 28, 1987, UNI had a pair of freshmen each score 20 points in a game. Tywhon Pickford (23 points) and Austin Phyfe (20 points) each went for 20 points in UNI’s 81-76 win over Valparaiso on Saturday. Pickford and Phyfe are the first

pair of Panther freshmen to both score 20 or more points in the same game since Maurice Newby (31 points) and Jason Reese (23 points) performed the feat in a 99-79 win over Northern Illinois in the UNI-Dome.

GOING YOUNGOf UNI’s 81 points against Valpara-iso, the Panthers underclassmen accounted for 77 percent of the scoring with 62 points, which in-cluded 18 of UNI’s 22 field goals (82 percent). The underclassmen also ac-counted for 75 percent of the team’s rebounds with 30 caroms.

THE YOUNG SHALL LEADA trio of underclassmen stepped up at Indiana State on Jan. 10 for the Panthers in sophomore Isaiah Brown and true freshmen Austin Phyfe and Tywhon Pickford. Brown stuffed his stat sheet with 13 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Brown made 6-of-11 shots from the field as he played a career-high 39 minutes. Phyfe buried both of his field goal attempts and scored six points to go with three rebounds in 11 minutes against the Sycamores. Freshman Tywhon Pickford matched his then career-high scoring with 18 points and seven rebounds against the Sycamores. Pickford tied the game at 67-67 on a layup with :10.6 seconds left after a steal from sophomore point guard Juwan McCloud.

KOCH EARNS MVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORSUNI senior Bennett Koch has earned the Missouri Valley Conference’s men’s basketball player of the week honor. Koch (Ashwaubenon, Wiscon-sin) scored a career-high 30 points and led UNI to a 77-68 overtime victory over UNLV. Koch made 10-of-19 field goals and was 10-of-13 from the free throw line against the previously undefeated Runnin’ Rebels. UNI trailed by three points with under a minute to play in regula-tion, when Koch scored in the post with :49.7 left. Koch then sent the game to overtime by making a free throw with :18.4 remaining. Koch’s dunk with 1:49 left in overtime gave UNI a 68-63 lead. He buried two free throws with :11.5 left to close out the scoring. Koch also grabbed seven re-bounds and posted three steals.

PICKFORD EARNS NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK HONORS FROM MVCUNI freshman guard Tywhon Pickford was honored as the MVC Newcomer of the Week (Nov. 27). Pickford averaged 12.7 points and 12.7 rebounds as UNI took sec-ond place at the Battle 4 Atlantis.

PICKFORD, MCCLOUD NAMED BAT-TLE4ATLANTIS TOURNEY TEAMUNI’s Tywhon Pickford and Juwan McCloud were named to the Battle 4 Atlantis All-Tournament team. Pickford averaged 12.7 points and 12.3 rebounds per game in the three contests. He pulled down 10 offensive rebounds in the tour-nament. Pickford also went for 18 points and 18 rebounds vs. North Carolina State. It marked the first 18-rebound performance by a UNI Panthers since David Gruber went for 18 rebounds against Montana on Nov. 22, 2002. McCloud led the Panthers in scoring at 13.0 points per game. He also handed out a team-high 10 assists and tallied four steals.

SPENCER SPARKS WIN VS SMUUNI sophomore guard Spencer Haldeman sparked the Panther victory over SMU by draining four 3-pointers and scoring 15 points off the bench.

PAIR OF DOUBLE-DOUBLESBennett Koch and Tywhon Pickford each posted double-doubles against Alcorn State. Koch earned his third career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 13 rebounds vs. the Braves. Pickford secured his first colle-giate double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds vs. the Braves. The last time UNI had two players record double-doubles on the same night came back on March 2, 2013, when Jake Koch (18 pts./11 rbs.) and Seth Tuttle (15 pts./12 rbs.) did it against Illinois State.

KOCH TIES MCLEOD RECORDBennett Koch tied his own McLeod Center record for field goal percent-age in a game (1.000) as he went 8-for-8 from the field vs. Wartburg.

Last season, Koch went 8-for-8 from the field vs. Drake (Jan. 15, 2017).

50 REBOUNDS VS. WARTBURGUNI posted 50 rebounds vs. Wart-burg to equal the highest amount for a Panther team in the McLeod Center. UNI also tallied 50 rebounds vs. Coe on Nov. 16, 2010.

FRESHMAN DOUBLE-DOUBLETywhon Pickford’s double-double vs. Alcorn State was UNI’s first dou-ble-double by freshman since Seth Tuttle earned four of them during his 2011-12 season.

UNI OPENED AT DEAN DOMEThe Panthers opened the season last Friday at No. 9-ranked North Carolina. The Tar Heels scored an 86-69 victory over the Panthers at the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. UNI had three players reach double-figure scoring at North Carolina, led by sophomore guard Spencer Haldeman’s 15 points off the bench. UNI starters Bennett Koch (11 points) and Isaiah Brown (13 points) each scored in double figures.

13 TRIPLES ON THE ROADThe Panthers made 13 3-pointers at North Carolina. Last season, UNI made 13 or more three-pointers in two games. The last time UNI made at least 13 3-pointers in a game came Dec. 7, 2016, when the Panthers buried 20 3-pointers against South Dakota State. The last time UNI made 13 or more 3-pointers in a true road game came on Jan. 27, 2016, when the Panthers made 15 triples in an 68-50 victory at Bradley at Carver Arena.

UNI RALLIES FOR EXHIB. WINUNI rallied from an eight-point defi-cit with four minutes remaining to score a 72-66 exhibition victory over NCAA Division II UNC Pembroke on Sunday in the McLeod Center. UNI led by 18 points in the first half only to see Pembroke take a 64-56 lead with 3:58 left in the game.

The Panthers scored the next 15 points including 10 from true freshman guard Tywhon Pickford and closed the game on a 16-2 run.

EIGHT NCAA TRIPS FOR UNIUNI made its eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2016. The Panthers are 5-8 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.

KOCH, CARLSON EARN ALL-MVC PRESEASON HONORSUniversity of Northern Iowa seniors Bennett Koch and Klint Carlson have been named to the Presea-son All-Missouri Valley Conference teams. Koch earned first-team all-MVC honors, while Carlson was selected to the second team. Koch is UNI’s top returning scorer at 11.0 points per game. In

his last 14 games last season, Koch averaged a team-best 14.3 points and 5.6 rebounds in 24.9 minutes per game. Carlson averaged more points per game for the third consecutive season (8.3 ppg). He ranked No. 4 in the league at 36.6 minutes per game.

UNI INKS TOP-100 RECRUIT GREENUniversity of Northern Iowa head men’s basketball coach Ben Ja-cobson has announced the signing of consensus top-100 recruit A.J. Green to a National Letter-of-Intent to play for the Panthers beginning in the 2018-19 season. Green (6’4”, 175 lbs., Guard – Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls HS) is ranked among the top-100 re-cruits by ESPN (No. 74), 247 (No. 77), Scout (No. 77) and Rivals (No. 88). He is a four-star recruit and a first-team all-state pick by the Iowa Newspaper Association in both 2016 and 2017. “A.J. has a tremendous work ethic and drive to be the absolute best. It has been a lot of fun watch-ing him work and grow as player over the course of all these years,” Jacobson said. “In A.J., we are getting a player who knows our pro-gram, comes in with lofty goals and has made himself one of the best players in the country.
