Type of Documentary

24 hours in A&E is a fly on the wall type of Documentary because it has lots of observation involved, little narration so the audience know what is going on within the scene, it has lots of

editing involved throughly as there is lots of cuts and cut out scenes. There is only a few interviews involved which is a person that is related to the

person who has been injured.

ThemesThe themes in the Documentary ’24 hours in A&E’ is mainly based on hospitals and accidents/injuries and what happened to the patient that has been injured during an accident.

Narrative StructureThe narrative structure of the Documentary ’24 hours in A&E’ is that it is single stranded as it is based on one topic which is hospital/injuries even though there is a few different injuries involved within the programme. It is linear because it shows you what is happening to each patient step by step even though there is cuts to different patients to show how that patient is getting on with their injury. It is also closed because the audience knows what has happened to the patient and what they have to do next, there is no questions that the audience need to ask at the end as everything that they need to know is shown within the Documentary.

Camera WorkDuring the Documentary ’24 hours in

A&E’ a numerous types of camera shots, angles and movements were used

throughout the programme.

An example of a camera shot that was used was the birds eye view especially at the start of the programme of the ambulance to show the scene of the ambulance and that it is to do with hospitals. Also a birds eye view is used over patients to show how injured they are.

High angle shots were also used during the programme ’24 hours in A&E’ this is to make the scene more dramatic as it is a serious topic of Documentary, it also could be used to show that they are less powerless and do not have control of what is about to happen.Low angle shots are used throughout this documentary . This type

of angle is used to show that the person is a lot more powerful ordominant.

Some long shots have been using during the documentary ’24 hours in A&E’ this is to show the place that the scene is set in and its surroundings.

Close ups and mid shots are used during interviews to show the characters emotions and facial expressions to the situations that is going on, it also shows that the interviewee that is speaking is the most important for the audience to pay attention too.

Mise-en-scene The mise-en-scene during the documentary

’24 hours in A&E’ shows the costumes,actors, makeup&hair, Props and the setting.

The costumes during this documentary is that the patients or characters related to the patient are dressed in casual, everyday clothing, this is to show that the patient didn’t know that they were going to end up in hospital and also it shows more reality as they have not needed to dress up to film this documentary. The patients are also in hospital gowns which shows the location that they are in and they have to be taken care of. The hospital staff are dressed in their everyday uniform this is to show that this is what their job is and that people know that they are staff in the hospital.

The actors during this documentary mainly have serious facial expressions as these actors have a serious job of saving patients lives from accidents they have had or helping injured patients such as a broken leg. There lifestyle is very busy saving peoples lives and have to be serious.

The make up and hair of the actors is that for the women it is mainly tied back as they work on a busy lifestyle and for example if they were operating they would have to have it back with a hair cover for hygienic reasons. The makeup is just everyday makeup.

The props that are used during the documentary is the hospital beds, and medical items to check

patients. This showsprofession as they are using the correct equipment and

the setting of this documentary is

in a hospital as it is a programmeabout A&E.

Sound

There is a slight narration throughout the documentary ’24 hours in A&E’. The narration is a voiceover but as the narrator cannot be seen it is a voice of God. The narrator is a youngish male character, who is english with no particular accent. The voiceover anchors the meaning of the images, and explains what is happening if there is no interviews, or observations that may not make sense to the audience so the audience know what is going on.

Editing

The editing in this documentary has cuts from patients to show how busy the hospital is and that there is a lot of patients all in at one time. The pace of editing is slow when there is no action taking place but as soon as some action takes place e.g. somebody being rushed into A&E then the pace of editing quickens.

Graphics

The graphics used in this documentary aremainly on interviews showing text at the bottom of the screen underneath the interviewee with their name, role or how they are related to the patient.
