Tony Rutherglen Saturday

Just had an absolutely fantastic weekend surrounded by G.A. & Gam Anon mem-bers, as well as their family and friends. This all happened on the Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond at Culag.

Patrick and Ann were the best hosts ever. The meal was amazing, as was the wine and the accommodation. The breakfast (cooked by Patrick) was the best hangover cure you'll ever get.

On the night Big Jim (Maryhill Thursday) was just in a different class. He provided the music, compared the karaoke and gave us a brilliant laugh by getting a certain John T to dress up as a Sumo Scotsman with a funny walk called Jock Strap. To be fair I don't know if the walk was meant to be funny as John was still walking the same way at breakfast.

I'd really like to thank Patrick and Ann for a wonderful night. Patrick just couldn't do enough for us. He was as you say ‘pure dead brilliant’. If you are ever passing Culag you really must pop in and see him.

Also I'd like to thank Mick & Betty, John & Tammi, Ryan & Louise, John & Angela, Jack & Caroline, John & Linda, Jim & Karen, Michael & Jean, Gerry & Lynn, John & Glenda, Ian & Marion, Stevie & Donna, John & Donna, Ellen, Michele and Melissa & May for their great friendship. This to me is what G.A. is all about-when you put in a bit of effort.

You get laughter back in your life, with the emphasis on LIFE.

Have a great life gambling free O.D.A.A.T.

To crave to bet grows stronger, so that it becomes more and more necessary to bet again and again and again. The phenomenon of craving something is hard to identify because we kept satisfying it. Once we have crossed over the line to gamble there is no turning back. Our gambling compulsion takes over. Periods of stopping gambling are not a cure for us. If we gamble again we are right back where we left off.

We need to find the solution. The solution lies in a personality change affected by a spiritual experience which is a basic text for compulsive gamblers and contains the Twelve Step Re-covery Program. This makes you Accountable. Emotional Insecurity may need professional help. A spiritual malady becomes worse when in action and condemns us to gamble again to get relief from an intolerable state of mind or we may choose to withdraw from life.

This World We Live In This world we live in, is like a galaxy of its own So big and ambiguous, I'm frequently alone. Intrigue and mystery are things of the past

Thoughts of the future leave me truly aghast.

Its dog eats dog, each man for his own. Overlooking each other whilst envisioning a throne

Love and Affection are buried side by side- Reign the earth are Mr Greed and Conceit- his bride.

Family values are slowly dissolving like snow

Commandment number 5 has reached an all-time low. Masks of benevolence are used to disguise intent

With only one motivation to individually ascent

Belief is illogical, magic no longer exists For if it’s unexplained, it’s not on the list

I tremble at the thought of replacing love for goods It makes no sense to trade diamonds for wood.

My question to ask is ‘when will it stop?’

Will we lose control and fall from the top? Will we self-destruct and regret it all?

After all, the higher you climb the longer you fall.

As a humble proletarian, an answer I do not have The answer you are seeking cannot be found in a lab.

In such a predicament, creativity reigns supreme Mere generosity and selflessness are not quite the theme.

For the answer, you will have to look deep into your heart

In a realm where logic and intellect do not play a part You must fear the future, you must appreciate the past It all starts with the present, your contribution is vast.

Section 2-Some Deviations along the Road to Recovery 13. GA as an Addiction

Is this possible? The short answer has to be “yes and No”. Many people who come to Gamblers Anonymous go through a period during which GA, the people, and the meetings, become the most important thing in their lives. It dominates their thoughts, determines their mood and feelings and certainly affects their behaviour. It totally fills that “gambling shaped gap” and allows them to maintain an addictive way of life with a focus on just one central activity with all the hidden payoffs that go with it, the simplifying of decisions, etc., and certainly maintaining distance from family and loved ones just as before. But, in other ways it is NOT the same as other addictions. First it is NOT short term pleasure for long term misery, rather the opposite, because often it tells the addict unpleasant truths that are short term misery for long term happiness. GA addiction looks very like a “benign addiction”, like jogging and meditating, and perhaps some forms of Workaholism. With benign addictions some of the main features of malignant addictions are there, for example, the dominance of the rest of life by a “monoculture”, the simplification of decisions, the withdrawal from social and family life, even the presence of tolerance and withdrawal symptoms! But the direct consequences of the activity are quite beneficial, even when the activity is carried to considerable excess. So “addiction to GA” is not a true malignant addiction, and so far as it can have addictive features, which it certainly can, it is more like a benign addiction. Section 3: What is addiction for the partner? The very idea that there could be any, even minor, compensations whatsoever in remaining married to/living or in a relationship with an addict may well seem unlikely. It is similar to the idea that there could be some hidden advantages to the addict in maintaining an addictive way of life after the addiction is gone. And yet a long time ago some psychoanalysts suggested that the MAIN reason some men and women drank to excess was that their spouses, especially the wives, manipulated them into it because they got some secret satisfaction from their husbands drinking. Unfortunately, some clever but ignorant people have applied the same idea to the wives of gamblers, and no doubt to other addictions too. It is absolutely crucially important to be clear that that is NOT what is being suggested here. There is no doubt that, to the spouse/partner, any major addiction, has been and still is a disaster which they never sought, unwittingly or even “unconsciously”. But, during the time that the spouse/partner/relative is forced to live with an addiction they can often find MINOR compensations in what is still an overwhelmingly desperate and totally unwanted life situation. Just as the addict learns a pattern of hidden advantages, even in a lifestyle while being destroyed, the spouse/partner/relative learns to find some minor consolations in a life which they would be glad to exchange for almost any other minor consolations. Once it is thus clearly understood that the learned compensations are MINOR ones, we can see more clearly the importance of becoming fully aware of them, and to give them up when the appropriate time comes. No one is suggesting that they should be given up while the gambler is gambling. They may, at that time, be very necessary for survival. Once the gambling seems to have gone they should fall away naturally, but if not, as the examples below illustrate, they may lead to bad and negative feelings by the spouse/partner/relative. Irrational fears or loss of these “benefits” may, consciously or unconsciously, create irrational behaviour that does nothing to assist, and could even actively harm the recovery of the addict, the spouse/partner/relative or all.

Barrie Blackburn Hi, my name is Barrie and I'm a compulsive gambler who's just completed 90 days off a bet whilst writing this.....not for the first time in my life! I stopped coming to GA 10 years ago and I want to share with you why I did this, what happened since then and the changes I've made since finding the fellowship again. I first experienced GA when I was 16 years old, a young guy who had caused pain and anguish to himself and those around him for some time through gambling. My first meeting was in Livingston and I went for a few meetings and quickly thought I didn't need this type of help to stop me from gambling. "I'm a clever guy, what do these older guys know about me?" I had nothing in common with their lives or the destruction they had caused. I left soon after and carried on my life, not gambling, but that was soon to change. I met my now wife several years later and this is when my gambling really started affecting not only me, but people around me who loved me. I married my best friend and we had our first child-then my gambling really started taking hold of my life. The lies were the worst for me. Financially it was bad, but, not being able to trust the person who loves you most in the world was torture. The night I told my wife of the damage I had caused, I went to go and sleep in our daughter’s room. My wife turned and said, "Don't you dare! You come into our bed so that you can listen to me crying all night!" That hurt and I was at rock bottom, or so I thought! I soon got to a meeting and started going regularly once a week. I wasn't gambling, but soon over time, I started to resent the fellowship again and the people in it. I wasn't willing to accept the hand of friendship and the advice I was given; I wasn't ready to admit I was powerless. I left after a couple of years and didn't gamble for a long time. I could do it myself I thought. My old traits then started to appear and I convinced myself and my wife that I could cope with a coupon here, or a small bet there. I started to manipulate her once again. Between leaving GA and coming back, I had another big financial disaster through gambling but I managed to convince myself and my wife that returning to GA would just make me/us worse. Fast forward to December last year-We managed to get our dream house after many years of struggling with money (due to my gambling) even though I have a good job. I thought I was invincible! I could get credit cards, loans, you name it.....and I could hide it all from my wife because she trusted me.

October and all things came crashing down. I was at my depths. I considered self-destruction, but I convinced myself it would be better for my wonderful wife and two wonderful girls to have a husband/dad that they hated still alive rather than hated and dead. I love my family more than anything and always felt shame and remorse after gambling, no more so than when I faced up to my wife this last time. I'm one of the lucky ones. Once again, my ever suffering wife stuck by me and I'm still here. This time, there was no discussion, no option, GA was the only way. The first night I walked through the doors at Blackburn, yes I was anxious, but the hand of friendship was there like the last time, from old faces and new. This time I reached out and grabbed it with both hands!! I'm going to two meetings a week, travelling the country with my new friends, in frequent contact with members and loving GA. I look forward to going to meetings, love meeting other members, sharing stories and starting new friendships. I have submitted; gambling has me beat and I have an insidious illness! I still have a lot of things I need to change in my life, but I'll do this a day at time. I've heard this in a few rooms now and I really believe it- at least by coming to GA, I have a chance! My girls are old enough to understand this time and the fact that they know has been hard, but I'm glad in a way. My recovery can not only benefit me, but our whole family. I look forward to making amends as I go along and I look forward to spending the rest of my life in this fellowship! I am now committed. Finally, I would like to thank all of you who have so far helped me get to where I am and those of you who will help me in the future. My name is Barrie and I am a compulsive gambler. Best regards Barrie ___________________________________________________________________

Jimmy Blackburn We all have a story to tell, however we are the lucky ones who have found recov-ery through our wonderful fellowship. RESILIENCE

Like a knockout blow In the final round

The challenges come

All at once How you cope will depend on how you see them

It's not always black and white Pastel shades Are all abound

You can get through this Even if you have to tick Them off one by one

Not everything Needs to be resolved today

Deal with what you can

Lighter they will become They say "Rome wasn't built in a day"

Neither was your character It might look flawed to you

But in you might be That single trait your foe wish they had

Test your resilience

And surprise yourself You might see what I see

One day, hopefully some day

Omar Dundee Monday - The Value of Things

As a child to a younger teenager, I don’t think I wanted for much. There is five of us, pocket money was only £1, or £1.50, compared to my friends £5. To supplement this there was a work ethic of putting leaflets into about 200 papers then delivering them around the local area. This took ages, because I took the time to speak to neighbours.

Time moves on, I get engaged; money got put away every week to buy the wife’s dream dress. For months we lived on simple food- hams, eggs and chips. Sure it was a lovely meal and sure it was a lovely wedding dress. It is amazing when you struggle and still manage to afford things; you are more appreciative of what you have got.

When I dwindled away my uncle’s money at the height of my gambling, I was betting far more then my salary. I wasn’t giving a damn about anyone and didn’t care for anything. I just wanted that roulette ball to keep spinning-and quick-so I didn’t have to worry. When I was on a high I would boast to the croupier “That’s your weeks’ wages”

My uncle had worked hard for his money; understood the value of a pound and there was me-greedy with his hard earned money frittered away in seconds; I was at a low when the money went; not wanting to face anyone or the consequences. I had used my uncles’ hard earned investment as an extended overdraft.

My dad had to bail me out; it was unfortunate timing as he had just been made re-dundant. I remember him making the remark ‘I always wondered what it was like to have nothing’. He built an income again, over extended himself and took foster kids on, all at a time when he should have been relaxing, mortgage free.

Gambling free now, I look at why family members were so humble to a scoundrel that robbed them? – Simple, they hold another true value and that is love. They loved me enough to forgive me. They loved me enough to work together to get a so-lution. They worked to keep a bond in the family.

If I had kept gambling would there have been redemption for me?-certainly not!

Now I live within my means. I budget; I spend time with the family again.

I am re-learning to build a moral inventory. Life is good.

‘I do not measure success by how high I climb, but by How I high I bounce when I hit the bottom’

GA Unity Programme Step One: Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon G.A. Unity

1. Am I in my group a healing, mending, integrating person, or am I divisive? What

about gossip and taking other members’ inventories?

2. Am I a peacemaker? Or, do I with pious preludes such as “just for the sake of

discussion,” plunge into argument?

3. Am I gentle with those who rub me the wrong way, or am I abrasive?

4. Do I make competitive GA remarks, such as comparing one group with another or

contrasting GA in one place with GA in another?

5. Do I put down some GA activities as if I were superior for not participating in this or

that aspect of GA?

6. Am I informed about GA as a whole? Do I support, in every way I can, GA as a

whole, or just the parts I understand and approve of?

7. Am I as considerate of GA members as I want them to be of me?

8. Do I spout platitudes about love while indulging in and secretly justifying behaviour

that bristles with hostility?

9. Do I go to enough GA meetings or read enough GA literature to really keep in touch?

10. Do I share with GA all of me, the bad and the good, accepting as well as giving help to

the fellowship?

February 1st Reflection For The Day from the GA Blue Book The longer I am in the Gamblers Anonymous Program, the more clearly I see why it’s im-portant for me to understand why I do what I do, and say what I say. In the process, I’m com-ing to realise what kind of person I really am. I see now, for example, that it’s far easier to be honest with other people than with myself. I’m learning also that we are all hampered by our need to justify our actions and words Have I taken an inventory of myself as suggested in the Twelve Steps? Have I admitted my faults to myself and to another human being? Today I Pray May I not be stalled in my recovery process by the enormity of the Program’s Fouth Step-taking a moral and financial inventory of myself-or by admitting these shortcomings to myself and to another human being. May I know that honesty to myself about myself is all important. Today I Will Remember I cannot mend if I bend the truth. __________________________________________________________________________ ANONYMITY (From ‘Hints to a Happy Day’-Gam-Anon) Anonymity is very important to me. It is a feeling of security and confidentiality that whatever I say at a meeting or on the telephone to another member will not be re-peated to anyone else. This assures me freedom of expression and an unbelievable release of tension. Anonymity means more than only being known by my last initial. It means not re-vealing another member to an outsider without consent. It means trust, trust that allows you to open your heart and tell all without having your own words repeated back to you by anyone. It means that what is said at a meeting remains at that meeting. Trust is sacred. When someone invests a trust or a confidence in you, respect it.

‘A bird sitting in a tree is not afraid of the branch breaking because Her trust is not in the branch but in the strength of her own wings’
