New Scalloper ‘Golden Shore’ for Annalong

The latest launching at Mooney Boats Ltd., Killybegs is the state-of-the-art scalloper, “Golden Shore”, for Geoffrey and Heather Chambers, Annalong. The vessel will be fished by their sons, Christopher and Gareth, out of Kilkeel, for scallops and queenies.

“I met Geoffrey Chambers initially at Skipper Expo in Galway in 2014”, recalled boatyard Managing Director, Lee Mooney. “We started talking about the type of vessel he wanted and over the following 10months we agreed a final design plan tailored to the owner’s exact requirements and a contract was signed on 8th February, 2015 for delivery of completed vessel Summer 2016”

The “Golden Shore” was designed by Ian Paton of S.C. McAllister & Company Ltd., Campbeltown. She has a chine-built steel hull and measures 14.96m overall

(registered length 14.15m), with a beam of 6.05m and a draft of 3.4m aft.

She is built to Seafish Rules for fishing vessels of less than 15m, in accordance with Marine and Coastguard Agency (MCA) codes of practice. The vessel was completely built and fitted out in-house by Mooney Boats Ltd.

The yard bought in the steel plate from Holland and began nesting and cutting all the parts in August 2015 on the yards own CNC plasma cutting machine. At the early stages of the build there was a limited staff available for the first three months while the yard were completing the 26m ‘Audacious’ but, once that was completed, the yard put more staff to the ‘Golden Shore project.

“The hull was built from Lloyd’s grade A ship-building 8mm plate, with

500mm frame spacing and longitudinal girders. The vessel is fitted with a raised aluminium wheelhouse with forward galley, cabins and toilet & shower area. The engine room is situated forward below accommodation area with fish hold amidships and steering room aft. There are 3 no watertight bulkheads with a bulbous bow and freshwater tank located in forepeak.

The yard bought in a 1600mm diameter 4 Blade propeller and nozzle from Teignbridge. The yard machined the propeller shaft and intermediate shaft in house, which is made from 110mm diameter stainless steel. The shafts are double tapered and keyed with mild steel couplings. the vessel and two 2.5 tonne Pullmaster winches supplied for pull-down of the gear. RAPP also supplied the 2 hydraulic pumps, filters & valves and drawing for the hydraulic system on the vessel.

Mooney Boats Ltd. manufactured and supplied the 10-tonne net drum, which was fitted on the gantry aft. “This was an additional item that the owner requested and was not in original plans for the vessel. “The net drum was made with aluminium side to reduce weight and is situated on top of the gantry aft.

The vessel was fitted with a 750 litre hydraulic oil tank and a Bowman oil cooler, which is seawater cooled. The installation of the hydraulics package was completed by Mooney Boats Ltd. own hydraulic fitters and commissioned by RAPP Ecosse on completion.

The vessel is fitted with two stainless steel conveyor belts, supplied

by Joe Lynch, Greencastle. There is also a stainless steel riddler, driven hydraulically from the pto on the gearbox on the main engine. Mooney Boats Ltd. piped the hydraulics to the conveyor belts and riddler.

The refrigeration system was supplied by Cool Temp Refrigeration, Markethill, Co. Armagh, and consists of a Bitzer compressor and a K073HB condenser. Mooney Boats Ltd. manufactured and supplied the stainless steel evaporators that were erected in the fish hold of the vessel. They also installed the compressor and condenser supplied by Cool Temp. and after the yard installed the system it was commissioned by Cool Temp.

On the forward end of the main engine, there are two 1.5in Jabsco clutched seawater pumps, one for the hydraulic oil cooling and deck wash, and the other is for fire and bilge. There is also a Calpeda

saltwater pump for the cooling and refrigeration system.

There is a 60-litre fresh water pressure set for supplying the toilets, showers and sink. All the bilge piping has been completed in galvanized steel with nodular cast iron seawater valves on the sides. The yard has fitted a bilge manifold in the engine room where the owners can control which section they want to pump from. There is an Amazon Warrior emergency bilge pump for engine room and fishold with a separate Whale Gusher Titan pump for the steering room.

The wheelhouse electronics package was supplied by Selex Communications, Kilkeel and included: A JRC JMA-5212 10KW Radar System, Navitron NT921 Autopilot system, with Watch Alarm and Rudder Angle Indicator interfaced to a JRC JLR-21 GPS Compass, Intellian i4 TVRO System Black Box AIS System interfaced

to a Trax Chartplotting package, Icom IC-M323 VHF Package,Sailor Fleet One Broadband Package and a Standard Horizon Intercom System The electrical system was all supplied and manufactured by Mooney Boats own electrical engineers. It is a 220 volt three-phase system which is powered from the 2 shaft generators on the auxiliary engines. The switch boards were all manufacture in-house by the yard and are located in the engine room and the wheelhouse. The vessel has been fitted with LED lighting throughout and an electric heating system.

There is a 24-volt emergency supply system to run emergency lighting and essential communications systems, as per MCA requirements. There are 2 separate batter banks located on the wheelhouse roof for ships load and emergency 24 volt system. The vessel is fitted with a Victron

Skylla-I 24/100 Main Charger and a Victon Skylla-TG 24/50 back up charger.

The stepped fish hold, which is located mid-ships, has spray foam insulation on the sides and deck heads to a minimum thickness of 150mm. The fishold is lined with 3/4” fiberglassed marine plywood and gel coated. There are two 2-tonne ice lockers, port and starboard sides and the yard also manufactured an aluminium hopper on the underside of the main hatch for bagging up scallops and queenies.

Accommodation, in the form of a four-berth cabin, is on

the main deck. The cabins are on the port side with toilet and showers on the starboard. Each bunk has its own bunk light and charging system. All timberwork in the cabins has been completed in white oak with solid oak edges.

The galley, forward, has been completed to the highest specifications, with solid oak frames, oak doors and flat-screen televisions. The heating system is electrical with galley seating located around the bow area of the galley and finished in red vinyl. The wheelhouse is located on top of the forecastle deck with access from the main deck. The layout

of the wheelhouse was designed by the owners and fitted out by the yards carpenters to owners exacting requirements. There is a NorSap 1000 comfort skippers chair located to the port side of wheelhouse and the wheelhouse electronics and controls are positioned as required by owners. All screens are recessed into the console and all timber work is competed in solid oak to a very high standard.

The outside of the bulwarks, where the dredges come up, is lined with 25ml nylon sheeting to protect the hull of the boat from wear and tear. The top rail on the gunwale

is fitted with stainless steel to prevent rust and reduce maintenance.

The 100-kilo anchor, positioned forward, was also supplied by Mooney Boats Ltd. as was the galvanized steel chain for it.

The “Golden Shore” is finished with a Jotun Paint system supplied by the yard, and the hull has been fitted with a Macduff sacrificial anode system, also supplied by the yard.

“It’s been a pleasure to be involved in this project and all of us and Mooney Boats Ltd would like to wish Geoffrey, Heather & the Chambers family all the best going forward.”
