Today's first and second readings seem to contradict each other. In the Acts of the Apostles, Paul and Barnabas remind the other disciples that they would "undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God" (Acts 14:22). But in the second reading from Revelation, John says there will be "no more . . . mourning, wailing, or pain" (Revelation 21:4). These two sides of the Kingdom show how real our faith is. Life is frequently contradictory. A woman in labor moves from pain to joy in seconds after her child is born. She doesn't forget the pain, but knows it is necessary for the joy of new birth. Only the artist knows how much effort and pain went into the creation of a painting, sculpture, or symphony. That's why Jesus in the Gospel talks of his coming death on the cross as the way that God will glorify him. Even God does not do things the easy way. Jesus didn't send a stunt man to take his place on the cross. It was God who was born in poverty, in a time of high infant mortality (even higher when Herod tried to kill the Child). It was God who suffered, from the Agony in the Garden through the Crucifixion. So when Jesus tells us to love one another as he has loved us, he knows what it cost. And he also knew that his death on the cross would be the beginning of a way of love that will eventually lead to "no more death or mourning, wailing or pain." We're not there yet, but we know we are not alone in our suffering for "God himself will always be with them" (Revelation 21:3).

Jubilee Year of Mercy

April 24, 2016 Fifh Sunday of Easter

This Sunday's "Youth Jubilee" previews July's World Youth Day in Krakow. Its theme from Matthew 5:7, "Blessed are the merciful," echoes Pope Francis' warning that "the practice of mercy is waning in the wider culture." In countercultural witness, there-fore, "the time has come," says Francis, "for

the Church to take up the joyful call to mercy once more. It is time to return to the basics and to bear the weaknesses and struggles of our brothers and sisters." Jesus affirms the same in today's Gospel. "As I have loved you, so you also should love one another" (John 13:34). Francis concludes, "The Church's very credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and compassionate love." Jesus too asserts, "This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another" (John 13:35). Thus mercy "makes young" the Church, the world, and everyone. "Mercy is the force that reawakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the future with hope" (Misericordiae Vultus, 10).

DID YOU KNOW?

Preventing child sexual abuse is a partnership. It requires education, training, and action from parents, other adults, organizations, and children. As adults, we need to learn to recognize other adults who are a risk to kids – ours and the others in the community. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, which gives us all an opportunity to learn more about what the Archdiocese of Los Angeles is doing to prevent child sexual abuse from happening. For more information about the VIRTUS® Child Abuse Prevention Programs for Adults and Children contact [email protected].
