    Message From Presidente Dayton

24 de Abril de 2016El larín de El Faro

When I was a young man on the ranch in Wyoming, we put up hay for the cattle to eatduring the cold winters. It was clean, pleasant work which I really didn’t mind. However, whenever it rained, we couldn’t put up the hay because it would mildew if put it in bales wet.We always hoped that we would get a vacation from the work if it rained-----however, Dadalways had a different idea. If it was raining, we were required to go into the field and pick upbig rocks which could damage the farm machinery. We hated this most menial of tasks andalways felt put upon when we had to pick up rocks. Years later, I came to the realization thatit was never about the rocks. Dad was making sure that we always had something to do, thatwe weren’t lazy, that we knew how to work and that we didn’t waste any time. I am so gratefulthat my father taught me how to work hard and not waste time.

Missionary work requires great effort and is often hard emotionally and physically. When weaccepted our call from the Lord we essentially turned our life over to Him for 18-24 months. Itbecame His time — not ours. We promised that we would do His work with all of our heart(spiritual force), might (will, desire, attitude), mind (intellect) and strength (physical). (D&C4:1-2) Indeed your diligence in missionary work is an expression of your love for the Lord(Matt 5:15). A diligent missionary works efficiently and effectively. When you are diligent youfind joy and satisfaction in His work. President Benson has said, “There is no greaterexhilaration or satisfaction than to know after a hard day, that we have done our best.” Adiligent missionary does many good things of his own free will — he doesn’t have to becommanded in all things. (D&C 58:26-29). A hard-working consecrated missionary keeps

going even after he/she is tired, not wanting to waste a precious moment. A hard-workingmissionary plans regularly and effectively and then works the plan. Again, President Bensonhas stated that, “…one of the greatest secrets of missionary work is WORK! If a missionaryworks, he will get the Spirit; if he gets the Spirit, he will teach by the spirit; and if he teaches bythe Spirit, he will touch the hearts of the people and he will be happy. There will be nohomesickness, no worrying about families, for all time and talents and interest are centered onthe work of the ministry.” Bishop David Burton has said that, “Work is not a matter of needalone: it is a spiritual necessity. To work honestly and productively brings contentment and asense of self-worth.”

Multiple scriptures make it very clear that the idler (lazy disciple) will have no place in the

kingdom of God (D&C 68:31, 75:29). Work is an eternal principle that characterizes the trulycommitted follower of Christ — especially in missionary work. It is good to remember that it iscalled, appropriately, missionary WORK, not missionary play, missionary relax, missionary do

    Message From Presidente Dayton, cont.

what I want, missionary sleep a lot, missionary recreate, or missionary waste time. There aremany ways in which a missionary can waste time or be lazy in the work.

Examples might include: making multiple trips to the Church to check e-mail, spending toomuch time in members’ homes, taking too much time in a lesson, lingering over a meal at amember’s house, planning poorly and not have a back -up appointment, not leaving piso inime in the morning and mediodía, spending excessive amounts of time at the Church with no

missionary purpose, attending ward activities that are not focused on missionary work with nonvestigator attending, not planning our time wisely, etc. Usually the Spirit prompts us when weare wasting the Savior’s time. Responding to those promptings shows your commitment and

dedication to giving the Savior the very best that you have. It is my prayer that every singleday and every single hour we will give the Lord the best that we have. It is, after all, His time — not ours. May we all “work” to be the very best, most dedicated disciples we possibly can.

May we plan and use our time wisely. And, may we be hard-working, committed disciplesn this work that is more important than any other on the earth. I love the great missionaries ofEl Faro. There are so many wonderful companionships that work hard, diligently and wellevery day. I know that ALL of us have the power and capacity to commit to hard work anddiligence in the work of bringing souls to Christ. May the Lord bless you as you do so.

    Diligentemente,President Merril T Dayton

    Discernment vs Judgment

    Message From Hermana Dayton

24 de Abril de 2016El larín de El Faro

Discernment is understanding the deeper reasons why things happen. Solomon askedhe Lord for discernment when he could have asked for anything. In 1 Kings 3:9 it says,Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart...that I may be able to DISCERNetween good and bad". An understanding heart listens to the whisperings of the spirit

nd follows the words of God found in the scriptures.

There are many examples in the scriptures of people who were able to discern thehoughts and intentions of others. Ammon was able to discern the thoughts of the king.Alma 18:18) The Savior demonstrated discernment often. He could often discern whathe Pharisees and Sadducees were thinking. He was able to love others, to discern the

wrongs they had done and still lift and strengthen them. We can always show love tothers, realizing that we have not walked in another persons shoes and do not know theiast and what they have gone through. Very often people do what they do because ofn unmet need in their life. Wrong choices made by people are often a result ofnresolved guilt, bitterness, or lack of purpose in life.

A person who discerns examines his own life and learns from past mistakes and themistakes of others. A discerning person has the ability to distinguish between what is

ood and what is evil, in order to make wise decisions. A discerning person will askmany questions, get facts and try to trace problems to their causes. A discerning person

usually a person who loves, wants to help others solve the challenges and struggleshey are facing by giving wise council. A judgmental person is one who forms opinionsnd then looks for evidence to support those opinions. A judgmental person very often

verlooks his own faults and focuses on the faults and weaknesses of others.

    Message From Hermana Dayton

24 de Abril de 2016El larín de El Faro

We can apply discernment in our lives as missionaries by:

Praying daily for an understanding heartPray not only FOR the Spirit, but UNTIL the SpiritStudying the scriptures, praying daily to have the Spirit with us to be able to discernthe thoughts and feelings of othersUnderstanding that selfishness leads to a breakdown in companionship relationshipsAsking thoughtful questions to investigators to understand why they are struggling toaccept the GospelNot judging too hastily the people we see and meet on the streets

Learning from our past experiences and the experiences of othersTrying to discern why your companion is struggling instead of cavalierly judginghim/her.

resident Dayton and I love you dearly! We so enjoyed our time with you duringersonal interviews and came away, once again, inspired by the wonderful missionariesf El Faro. The Miracle of Baptism

24 de Abril de 2016El larín de El Faro

The first letter I wrote to you, I saidthat our miracle was Danielaccepting a baptismal date. Our

miracle this past week is that Danielwas baptized and confirmed amember of The Church of JesusChrist of Latter-Day Saints! Theservice was so beautiful. His recentconvert friend, Juan, received thepriesthood the Sunday before andwas able to baptize him. The Spiritwas so strong, and Daniel's joy wasso evident. Watching him grow andprogress in the gospel this pastmonth has truly been such a

blessing. It's amazing how he madechanges in his life and acceptedthe Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ.Daniel was the exact investigatorthat my teachers in the MTC told meI would never get to teach, so I'mespecially grateful that we wereable to meet such a goldeninvestigator as the first person I'vereally ever taught. This weekendwith two baptisms in reaffirmed tome why I want to be here as amissionary and the importance ofthe work we are doing.

This week was great! TeachingJose Maria was a privilege and thenseeing Elder ______ baptize him waseven better. He really is a greatperson. Lately I've been givingthanks for Jose Maria. A little whileback I received a spiritual witnessthat someone was going to bebaptized in my area I wasn't surewho and it was a little while back I

even wrote a spot on the whiteboard under the recent convertsarea (soon to be baptized). Justgoes to show that God always fulfillshis promises.

Well it was a wonderful weekPresident. We had the mostamazing opportunity to be a part ofthe Baptism of America, the person, not the place. It was wonderful! Shedidn't want it to be a huge ordeal sowe just had her family, one of themembers of the bishopric, and us. Itwas really really different than anybaptism that I will

probably ever see because she just wanted to do the ordinanceand nothing else (such as talks,

songs, etc), but the Spirit came induring the baptism and so it wasall okay. And she came onSunday to be Confirmed!!!!

This week changed my life, thebaptism with Blanca was special. Her daughter got up and spokeduring the service and the spiritfilled the room. The water was icecold, she is quite an old lady. When she got out she said that she

was filled with fire throughout herbody. My companion asked her ifshe knew what it was and she saidshe did. Then we sang happybirthday to her and she broke outin tears. We then got to go to herhouse to eat with her and herfamily. We were able to meet herson who is interested in gettingbaptized. He asked us if we werehappy and every single membersaid yes without question. Duringthis time they brought out a fewpictures of their dad Bianca'shusband. As I'm looking at thepictures I could see howemotional Fernanda wasgetting(Blanca’s daughter) and Ilooked across the table andBlanca’s son had left the room. Icould feel how amazing this manwas and how much love thisfamily had for him. It got methinking about the gift we have forthese people. Eternal families.

Nothing is as precious as theopportunity to live with God, JesusChrist, and our families for eternity.

This week was incredible; thisweek was full of miracles. Ourbeloved investigator wasbaptized! His whole incrediblestory is one long string of miracles!Starting with the miracle of anexample that his best friend set forhim while he was in his country, followed by the desire that he hadto look for the church here in Spainfor 2 months, then to come toevery single meeting we invited

him. Every single thing about himwas a miracle and anindescribable blessing from theLord. The baptism was absolutelybeautiful and the spirit was presenThe crowning jewel was after hisconfirmation when he told us abohow he was to now help otherscome into the church and theopportunity to hear his powerfultestimony about the church. He isstill developing spiritually, but hehas the desire to stay on the

straight and narrow path andalways prays to be undeviated. Hwas absolutely a miracle in everysingle sense of the word.

So first things first, Baba gotbaptized!! :) He finally kicked hissmoking habit and preparedhimself to be worthy of baptism! When he walked out of thebathroom in his white clothes hewas just beaming with a smile fromear to ear. It has been amazingseeing the atonement working inhis life and seen how he literallyshines with the light of Christ now.And even more exciting, his wifeand son came! She has been preapprehensive about the church swe were all praying she wouldcome to support his baptism andshe did! Not only did she come, swas crying as he was baptized! Iknow the spirit really touched herwhich is exactly what she needed

to open her heart to receiving thecharlas. On Sunday, we arrivedaround 9:30 to see that not onlywas Baba 30 minutes early, he wathere in a suit with his wife and soSeeing them sitting together inSacrament meeting for hisconfirmation was such a beautifusight. The goal is now for Baba toreceive the Aaronic priesthoodnext Sunday and then be able tobaptize his wife……….. Baptism isalways a miracle but it's evenbetter when it opens the door to afamily being sealed together in thtemple.
