Dear Customers and Cattlemen,

Welcome to our 23rd Performance Tested Bull and Female Sale. Thank you for your attendance

in person and online, and support of our program. Your investment in our genetics is greatly ap-

preciated as our program puts you at the top of our priorities for success.

This has been a challenging year. We have suffered severe drought conditions. What has been

inspiring to us is that our genetics have continued to flourish in these conditions. Many genet-

ics in this environment would have failed, however, our cows and bulls have been able to thrive

because they have been selected to succeed in a low-input environment and did not require

high inputs to produce profits and success. This has been very gratifying to us as we know they

will go on to your program and be successful in adding value to your herd as well.

This offering of Tokeena genetics represents many many years of selection. These are cattle that

blend both the ability to perform in a low-input management model, yet not sacrifice pounds

of profit for us and our customers. Fertility is a hallmark of our program. If you don’t have a live

thriving calf each year, you have nothing to pay the bills. This will continue to be a priority for

us.

Each category offered, bulls, pairs and heifers, have been selected to add value to your pro-

gram. Each Category has been selected from the top to the heart of our program. Culls have

been eliminated to give you the confidence to invest in Tokeena Angus.

The Commercial heifers are very exciting to us, as they represent what our bulls can do in other

programs and more importantly what they can do in your program. Great eyes, great feet and

We would like to dedicate this year’s sale to Dr. H. Lee Higdon, III We lost a dear friend this past year. It is with special thoughts to his wife Michelle and their “kids” Guy and Gail, that we dedicate this year’s sale. Lee and his family moved from Texas to Seneca in 1995 so that he could pursue his Ph.D. at Clem-son. They simply “fit” here at Tokeena and quickly became part of our family. Lee was a larger than life Texas cowboy who reached out to the entire upstate ag com-munity. Whether he was judging cattle shows at area fairs or buying show steers at the end of the state steer project, Lee was enthusiastic about the beef indus-try and keeping young people involved in agriculture. He and his family were

a wonderful addition to the friendship ring here at Tokeena—from hauling hay and finding a cool pond to jump into afterwards, holiday meals and special events like Gail’s venture into theater, Guy’s Eagle Scout success, retirement and birthday parties over the years to Meghan’s Ph.D. and the birth of Daniel and Paige’s son Watson. Lee often opened our sale with a prayer and his loss is sorely felt by everyone who knew him. We hope you will keep his family in your thoughts and prayers as we move forward into 2017.

New this year the Tokeena Angus Sale will replace the sale ring with 3 TV Monitors and each lot will be broadcast to those attending on those monitors, as well as those online on the internet.

The cattle will be penned just as in prior sales, before and during the sale for your review, however, will not come thru a sale ring. This reduces the stress on the

cattle and the people assisting the sale to bring the cattle thru the ring.

We encourage you to come early and review the cattle live in person or review the videos of the cattle if you are bidding online. The videos of the cattle were taken recently on December 6-8 and represent the quality individually and as a group for your discriminating view.

The Tokeena Bull is backed by over 80 years of performance selection. He is built upon superior Angus blood that is proven and depend-able to provide both the commercial and purebred breeder with performance, maternal power, and proven reliability. The McPhails have selected and utilized top AI Sires and have purchased superior herd bulls from around the country as far west as Montana.

Fertility:Scrotal size has always been a major criteria at Tokeena. Scrotal measurements as well as semen testing and evaluation insures that a bull will get the job done in breeding your cows.

Performance:Performance is important. Selection for performance is based on balance rather than maximums. A Tokeena bull will sire a calf crop that will grade high, weight-up and pay-up, thus maximizing your profits at weaning. With a strong emphasis on the maternal traits, a Tokeena bull will also provide you with a set of replacement heifers that will allow you to sustain your program.

No Fat Bulls: Tokeena bulls are developed and measured on a low calorie forage diet. You will not find fat bulls that are lethargic, poor breeders that “melt-down” during the breeding season. Many of these bulls, under good conditions, will gain weight during the breeding season. These bulls are fit and athletic to perform their intended purpose. Leaner bulls are better breeders and last longer for Tokeena customers.

Docility:Another key trait that is often overlooked by other programs is docility. Tokeena screens each bull for docility and attitude. Problems are eliminated so as not to pass this trait onto their customer.

The Tokeena CowWhat keeps you in the cattle business – Over 80 Years Of Selection Pressure

Many times, we focus on the performance of a bull or heifer, however, without the productive cow that produced them we have little to nothing in the cattle industry. The cow is the single most important individual in a cow/calf operation, regard-less if you are a commercial producer or Seedstock Purebred herd. The cow is what makes it all work as she is responsible for producing and raising a calf that is profitable

Fertility:A cow needs to give birth and raise a calf to weaning every 365 days and breed back while raising that calf. Fertility is mea-sured by the interval between calves born for a cow. The closer to 365 days the more fertile a cow is. Note the calving interval of the dams of bulls selling and the females being offered. This is a highly fertile program.

Weaning Ratio:The progeny weaning ratio reflects a cow’s productivity of raising that calf to weaning. A ratio of 100 is herd average. A ratio from 95 to 105 is ideal. Again, note the production of the mothers of these bulls and the females selling.

Environmental Adaptability:We have many different environments to grow cattle in this country. We also have many different management systems to raise and develop cattle. This has been a challenging year at Tokeena Angus with severe drought, yet the cattle have thrived and continued to produce and function in less than ideal conditions. A good cow has the ability to adapt to the conditions she is given, and the ability to continue to produce. Tokeena is managed on forage in a low-input paradigm. They are man-aged like most commercial herds in the country; low-inputs with high rewards and profitability. The Tokeena Cow is the focus of the program. She is the factory that makes the program work and function in good times and in bad times. A National Historic Angus HerdFocusing On Low-Maintenance Forage Based Cattle For Over 70 Years

The Tokeena Angus program is built on sustainability, function and prof-itability as well as innovation. Our location in the Southeast part of the country means that cattle must perform and function on available feed–and the cheapest feed then and now is grass. The cattle at Tokeena Angus are required to perform at optimum levels on grass and low-cost forage for profitability.

The Tokeena program has been at the forefront of utilizing technology to measure and evaluate their cattle for their own profitability as well as the profitability of their customers. Genetic lines from across the coun-try have been put to the test at Tokeena. Those that function as required stayed, and those that did not pass the test were culled

The Tokeena program is one of balance. Understanding that some traits are antagonistic to others such as growth and maternal, the program has

always focused on finding a balance of traits rather than maximizing one trait or group of traits. When you maximize one group of traits, you lose in another group, whereas, balance on all traits give you the best opportunity for sustain-ability and profits.

The Tokeena Cow is the factory and the foundation of the program. Without a live profitable calf, there is nothing to sell–there is no income, only out-put. The Tokeena cow is required to utilize the available forage to produce milk and raise a calf to optimum weight. She is required to be fertile and breed back while doing that and calving in a 365 day window, thus providing income ev-ery year. She is to be sound unddered, sound footed and trouble-free in her ability to function, including her disposition.

The Tokeena Bull is proud, masculine, good footed, fertile and athletic. To-keena bulls are not fat. They have not been maximized for gain while losing the ability to travel pastures, breed

cows, and grow to maturity. Forage testing bulls allows bulls to be fit,

athletic and express their libido, giving the customer with a better value and greater results at breeding time. Technology is used to test, evaluate and screen bulls that do not have the credentials necessary to deliver a profitable calf crop to their customer.

The Tokeena Angus program is a cattle program with a sound founda-tion, history and commitment. The McPhails are in the cattle business for money–not with money–and relate to the needs of their customers on a daily basis with the same obstacles and same rewards.
