Jaguar, 2009 Foreign Featured ClassJaguar Cars Limited is a British car manufacturer head-

quartered in Coventry, England, now owned and operated by Indian-based Tata Motors as part of Jaguar Land Rover.

The company was founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company in Blackpool in 1922, changing to SS Cars Ltd in 1934 in Coventry, and finally becoming Jaguar Cars Ltd in 1945. Following several subsequent changes of ownership since the 1960s, the company is now owned by India’s Tata Motors, who acquired it from Ford on June 2 2008.

The Jaguar company started production with the pre-war 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 litre models which used engines designed by the Standard Motor Company. The 1.5 litre four-cylinder engine was still supplied by Standard but the two larger six-cylinder ones were made in house. These cars have become known unofficially as Mark IVs.

The first post war model was the 1948 Mark V available with either 2.5 or 3.5 litre engines and had a more stream-lined appearance than pre-war models, but more important was the change to independent front suspension and hydrau-lic brakes.

The big breakthrough was the launch in 1948 of the XK120 sports car, with the new XK twin overhead camshaft (DOHC) 3.5 litre hemi-head six-cylinder engine designed by William Heynes, Walter Hassan and Claude Baily. This engine had been designed during the long nights during the war when

they would be on fire watch in the factory. The final design was finally arrived at after several attemps. That is until owner William Lyons said “make it quieter”. The car had originally been intended as a short production model of about 200 vehicles as a test bed for the new engine until its intended home, the new Mark VII saloon, was ready.

Hudson, 2009 Domestic Featured ClassIn 1909, four former associates of Ransom E. Olds (Roy

Chapin, Howard Coffin, Frederick Bezner and James Brady) began building a line of cars that became known for value, performance and solid engineering.

Each of the founders put up $1,500, not much by auto industry standards, even in those days.The big bankroller was Joseph L. Hudson, department store magnate who invested $90,000 in the new motor-car venture. Hudson’s portion was by far the largest investment. Roy Chapin, who emerged as the leader of Hudson Motor Car Co. and whose son, Roy Jr., would later run American Motors, the result of a merger of Nash-Kelvinator and Hudson, prudently decided to name the car after the man who put up most of the money.

The Hudson Motor Car Co. came to life in the winter of 1909, with a total capitalization of $100,000. First fac-tory was that of the Aerocar, a venture that had gone under. Chapin and Coffin both were “graduates” of Ransom Olds’ Olds Motor Works. They subsequently had built the Thomas-Detroit and the Chalmers-Detroit before launching Hudson.

Hudson Holds Lost Wallet for 55 Years —Written by Lord Rayden

A wallet misplaced during a romantic embrace has been returned to its forgetful owner after 55 years. Two classic car collectors from the US state of Idaho found the wallet after it fell out of the back of a vintage car they were planning to restore.

After an internet search they found and contacted the owner, Glenn Goodlove. Mr. Goodlove said he probably lost the wallet in the back seat of his 1946 Hudson car while kiss-ing a girl when he was home on leave from the US Navy. “If it was in my sailor-mentality years, I might have attempted to, as they said in those years, ‘make out,” Mr. Goodlove told the Idaho Twin Falls Times-News.

Vital CluesJon Beck, 61, and Chuck Merrill, 72, bought the now-vin-

tage vehicle in Idaho after placing an ad in a local newspaper to buy a classic car in need of restoration. Since 1952, the car had traveled from Washington state, where Mr. Goodlove’s grandfather owned it, to finish up neglected tasks in Idaho, changing hands several times en route.

Driving the car home after buying it, the collectors stopped at a restaurant and saw something had dislodged below the back seat. Like a couple of kids, we thought we had a gold mine,” Mr. Beck said. Instead, they found some small change - the leather wallet held a $10 bill, Mr. Goodlove’s military ID, his Social Security card, his driver’s license and several jewelry receipts from 1952, but they were all in the name of Glenn Putnam.

After searching online, Mr. Beck discovered that Mr. Putnam had since changed his name to Glenn Goodlove and moved to San Diego, California. He called Mr. Goodlove, asking to speak to a man who used to drive a ‘46 Hudson.

“There was a silence for about 15 seconds,” Mr. Beck told the Twin Falls Times-News. “Then he said, ‘Who is this?”’

Mr. Goodlove, now 75, says he did not even remember losing the wallet, but the find has brought memories of his youth in Everett, Washington, flooding back. “I could see the house and the car and the town and all the good stuff from living there,” he said. “They’ve been flowing ever since he talked to me.” Mr. Beck and Mr. Merrill have sent the wallet back to Mr. Goodlove.

POKER RUNThe Poker run will be held on Saturday, June 13, at noon.

The fee is $5 per vehicle. This is a good excuse to start up your vehicle and a great opportunity to take a short ride through our beautiful countryside. The Poker Run routes you to five stops where you will draw a card and immediately write your car number on it. It will be the strangest poker hand you have ever seen, but the winner will receive 50 per-cent of the pot! Please pre-register for this event. Cards must be returned no later than 1:30 p.m.

CAR SHOW PARADEA highlight of the Car Show for both spectators and partici-

pants is the Parade. Everyone is encouraged to participate in this celebratory ride through Manchester. Cars will be lined up by class at 3:30 p.m. at the Side Gate.

AWARDSTrophies are awarded based on the vehicle receiving the

most votes in its category. Three trophies will be awarded in each class (first, second and third). Special trophies will be awarded for: Best Paint Job, Vehicle Most Likely to Get a Ticket, Oscar V. Johnson Award, Club Participating Award, Spectator Award, and Longest Distance Travel Award.

EXHIBITSExhibits include Vintage Midget Race Car Collection pre-

sented by Atlantic Coast Old Timers and the Plug-n-Go Electric Car Exhibit hosted by Central Vermont Public Service. CVPS plug ’n go is a new program that encourages customers with a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle to use CVPS energy to reduce driving costs and air pollution by substituting off-peak electricity for gasoline.

Tech Sessions will feature exhibits and “ask the expert” ses-sions. Local expert Bill Halligan from B & H Auto Restoration will be on hand showing some of his work, and answering your questions on restoration & rust repair. Chop-Shop Customs (located in Woburn, Massachusetts) handles all aspects of paint, restoration, metal fabrication & mechanical for classic vehicles. This facility has been featured in such notable publications as Street Rodder, Custom Rodder & Classic Trucks.
