20122012 23rd & 24th of June

IntroductionIntroduction

Thank you to our sponsors and supportersThank you to our sponsors and supporters

Welcome to the 2012 Seahouses Festival On behalf of the festival committee it is my pleasure to welcome you to our event and hope you enjoy a great weekend. We have a full programme of superb music, plus activities and entertainment for all ages. Festival events are free of charge but we would be very grateful if you would contribute a small donation.

We have carefully put together a varied selection of outstanding music for your enjoyment. Many of the musicians are based in Northumberland but you will also hear an interesting mix of international sounds. There is a good representation of Americana in the programme this year and we have terrific performers

covering a wide range of styles, from danceable pop and indie folk, through to 1930s’ swing jazz.

Our theme for this year is ‘heroes’ and some of the weekend’s activities will be exploring famously heroic episodes, such as the Grace Darling story, as well as uncovering some unsung heroes. You can also

contribute to the theme by nominating your own personal hero(ine) and adding them to the festival’s ‘Wall Of Heroes’ at the Sports & Community Centre, where you will also find children’s activities, including a skate park, break-dancing, arts and crafts and other surprises.

Have a great time and if you are able to pop something in to a donation bucket it will help ensure that we are able to organise next year’s festival which will be on June 22nd and 23rd 2013!

Seahouses Girls’ Brigade 30th Anniversary Celebrations

Performing Men Methodist Church, Sat 23rd, 1pm

John Homer (guitar, vocals), George Milburn (guitar, mandolin, vocals), Steve Gilbert (bass) and Derek Heather (percussion). A newly-formed 4-piece, who write and present songs rooted in North East musical tradition. They employ a range of styles

from contemporary traditional folk, through skinny blues to coaly jazz, mixing guitar, bass, percussion, mandolin, flute, keyboards and vocals to achieve an eclectic result.

‘Amazing Grace’ - a talk about a play by Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood Methodist Church, Sat 23rd, 2pm

“Lighthouse... Camera... Action...when Hollywood came to Northumberland it was bound to cause a storm. Grace Armstrong sets out to make a film about her idol Grace Darling but things don’t turn out quite how she expects.”

From the pens of Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood, Tyneside-based writers of the hit plays, Dirty Dusting, Waiting For Gateaux, Alf Ramsey Knew My Grandfather and Maggie’s End, comes ‘Amazing Grace’, a funny, heartfelt play that pays tribute to the

Northumberland heroine who in 1838, with her lighthouse keeper father William, rescued 9 survivors from the wreck of the SS Forfarshire.

The writers of ‘Amazing Grace’ will be talking about why and how they wrote it, the support they have had, and hopefully some of the actors will

be there to do readings from the script.

Steve Price—Magician Methodist Church, Sat 23rd, 7pm tickets £3 to £5 Comedy, Magic and Mayhem! Steve Price is one of the UK's busiest and most established comedy magicians. He enjoys a reputation as an original performer of great experience.

This event is part of the Seahouses Girls’ Brigade 30th Anniversary celebrations which continue with a special re-dedication service in the Methodist Chapel on Sunday 24th at 10.45am.

Saturday 23rd June The Cornshed Sisters Methodist Church, Sat 23rd, 12.15pm

Less alike than these four peas you have never seen in the same pod. Their distinctive yet sympathetic voices range far and wide, recalling the emotive

tangles of The Band as often as the choral elegance of The Roches, yet sung and arranged in their own distinctly English manner. Guitar pop, folk tales, protest songs, country music, piano ballads and gospel must have all gone into the same soup from which these women supped.

Friday 22nd June Catch-A-Fishie (documentary film, 50 mins) Methodist Church, Fri 22nd, 7pm

Adrin Neatrour’s film accompanies the trawling skippers of the northeast coast as they pursue the fish and the fishing community tells its own experiences in its own words. The drama of the hunt is also captured in song by the Eyemouth Fisherman’s Choir, who be-come a story in their own right; we hear how their old songs are lost and heard no more. We will also screen artist Sarah Riseborough’s short film that developed out of her recent residency at St. Abbs.

Outdoor Music Stage - Saturday

Saturday 23rd JuneSaturday 23rd June

The Coopers www.thecoopersmusic.net Outdoor Stage 12.15pm Happy folk sung by happy folk, with a twist of pop thrown in for good measure. New band The Coopers have

already been making significant headway. They were the winners of the 2011 Futuresound competition and have showcased their work live, as

feature artists on BBC Introducing. Their debut EP, set for release mid 2012, promises to be an authentic reflection of their live performances - full of energy, unexpected arrangements and a healthy dose of good ol’ fashioned gumption!

“A cracking little break into the sunnier side of the musical world... uplifting tunes, impeccably polished performance and infectious melodies” “a pleasure to witness” - Leeds Music Scene

Ramon Goose www.ramongoose.com Outdoor Stage 1pm

Ramon is a blues rock guitarist and singer, known for his mastery of the slide

guitar, his work with The West African Blues Project and the hip hop blues band NuBlues. As a solo artist he tours extensively and has released several albums.

The Toy Hearts www.thetoyhearts.com Outdoor Stage 2pm

The Toy Hearts play country, bluegrass and western swing music with

the kind of style, passion and absolute commitment that has made them one of the country’s finest live bands. Led by three members of the Johnson family, The Toy Hearts are completely immersed in the magical music of the American south. Their most recent CD, record in Nashville,

is a triumph but doesn’t really prepare you for the full-on experience of a Toy Hearts show. Brilliant musicianship and stunning stagecraft.

“One of my favourite bands” - Imelda May

“It's a really lovely album [Femme Fatale], I like it very much. It's unusual to

think that really great bluegrass music would come out of the Midlands from this country, but it's true” - Bob Harris

Craft Fair and Festival Market Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 4pm.

The popular festival market will be located at the Seafield Park Site, next to the Crazy Golf, adjacent to the outdoor stage.

Jonny Kearney & Lucy Farrell Outdoor Stage 3pm

Delicate, haunting and heartbreaking are just a few of the words that

have been used to describe Jonny and Lucy’s music. Their EP, entitled ‘The North Farm Sessions’, received 4 stars from The Guardian and Q and sold heavily on tour supports with The Unthanks and Bellowhead.

“Such a beautiful record” Lauren Laverne (6 Music)

“Delicate, thoughtful and intimate” ****The Guardian

Lilliput www.lilliputband.com Outdoor Stage 4.45pm

Lilliput’s musical roots lie in traditional folk and blues music, although their influences extend to a variety of genres including contemporary

pop, jazz and rock. Lilliput’s primary focus is on creating the same richly layered soundscapes pioneered by Dylan, Nick Drake and Steely Dan. The almost cinematic quality of their songs is derived from their affinity to Fleet Foxes’ vivid palette of colourful storytelling imagery and

painstakingly well-honed musicianship.

Lilliput are dedicated to crafting thoughtful, emotive alternative folk

music with their blend of delicate finger-picked guitars, pristine, soaring harmonies and rousing percussion.

Watchers www.thewatchers.co.uk Outdoor Stage 5.40pm Watchers are steadily emerging as one of the most promising musical prospects from the northeast of England. Of late they have been busy

recording with producer Danton Supple (Morrissey, U2, Patti Smith, Doves) in preparation for their forthcoming debut release in the summer of 2012. Playing live, Watchers know there is nothing like the thrill and exhilaration that come from watching someone or something giving their

absolute all in performing, and they aim to deliver.

Rob Heron and The Tea Pad Orchestra www.teapadorchestra.co.uk Outdoor Stage 3.45pm

Formed in Newcastle, The Tea Pad Orchestra play an eclectic, original

musical brew of 1930’s swing, gypsy jazz, hokum blues, cajun, and country, all with similar themes of debauchery, dandyism, disasters and drink. With a set that comprises of original songs and speakeasy favourites, they are sure to make your feet tap and your booty shake.

“Out of the growing UK scene of bands with early American music influences, I'd say The Tea Pad Orchestra are most likely to be the gem.

I mean to say that they have one of the more original sounds budding. There is good songwriting with dynamic and unique instrumentation.” - Pokey LaFarge

Dan Walsh Outdoor Stage, Sunday 24th, 1.25pm www.danwalshbanjo.co.uk

Dan Walsh is an outstanding banjoist, guitarist, and singer—an eclectic and exciting musician with

a unique style, taking in folk, funk, bluegrass, jazz, rock and even Arabic. Touted as the finest young banjo player in the UK, he is a unique performer who simply loves his music.

“Incredibly gifted - if anyone has the opportunity to see him they must” - Janice Long, BBC Radio 2

Rod Clements Outdoor Stage 4pm www.rodclements.com

Lindisfarne founder-member and writer of "Meet Me On The Corner", Rod Clements is one of the most widely respected figures in British folk roots, both as an artist in his own right and through his associations with such seminal figures as Bert Jansch, Thea Gilmore, Ralph McTell and Pentangle. Rod's set is a mixture of Lindisfarne classics, material from his recent acclaimed solo album 'Odd Man Out', and songs from the folk/blues canon which originally

inspired him - all performed with wit, panache, heartfelt vocals and spine-tingling slide guitar.

My Darling Clementine Outdoor Stage 4.50pm www.mydarlingclementinemusic.co.uk

My Darling Clementine are a combination of some of the finest musicians in the UK, a brand new classic country songbook and two

stunning voices. Their acclaimed debut album, "How Do You Plead? " has been hailed as “the Best British Country Record ever” and had fans and critics alike reaching for the superlatives.

My Darling Clementine joins the talents of real life husband and wife team Michael Weston King and Lou Dalgleish. Together they have crafted an album of pure, honest, country duets, that evoke and honour the great duos of the past... the likes of Johnny Cash & June

Carter and, of course, George Jones & Tammy Wynette.
