Airports and Respect
As part of increased security at all airports you cannot show up early to pick up your friend at the airport and simply park curbside outside the doors to the airport. I am not sure what the time limit is on how long you can loiter there waiting for your friend, but I can tell you that 10 minutes is longer than what is allowed. No, no it was not I. I was simply an observer of the confrontation between an officer and the driver of the vehicle. I watched as the officer politely asked the driver to move on, circle around he suggested or use the cell phone lot, but you cannot park here. Immediately the driver became belligerent and disagreeable. The officer informed him again he could not remain. This went on for a few moments until the car started to move…about 5 feet and stop again. Now the officer is getting upset, the airport was very busy and he was trying his best to keep things moving. He marched up to the car and in a stern voice told the driver to move on. You would think this would be enough, but no. The driver started yelling at the officer, calling him names, and then started with the foul language. The confrontation escalated to the point where the officer was calling for backup and started to write this guy a ticket. At that point the man’s passenger arrived and got in the car, which then sped off amidst squealing tires and more foul language.
I watched in horror over how this man was treating the officer who was doing his job to insure everyone’s safety! This, of course, is only symptomatic of what is happening around the nation. News story after news story confirms that the respect for law enforcement or anyone in authority is deteriorating at an exponential rate. Now, I have no doubt that there are good officers and bad officers. Some that do their job well and others who might even abuse their position, but the fact of the matter is they do have a position that deserves respect. The person may or may not deserve respect, but the position does.
“For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good…Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.”
The trend of disrespect needs to end, but instead of wagging our fingers at this driver I saw or those that you run into, let’s think about what we can do to change things. Perhaps when you see an officer, smile and wish them a good day. Check our own attitude of those who hold positions of authority, but we disagree with them. What do we say about them? What do we post about them? I am not suggesting we cannot disagree, but we can show respect when we do so.

New Sunday morning small group Bible studies beginning September 10
The Gospel According to Luke
and
The Gospel According to Mark Each of these 13-week studies will cover the entire book of one of the Gospels, with a focus on the book’s background, message, and application to our lives. Participants can purchase a best-selling study guide/workbook for the class and home study, which includes the complete text of the Gospel, the Life Application Bible commentary and study notes for the scripture, as well as questions leading us deeper into our understanding of Jesus.
If you are interested in gaining a deeper knowledge of scripture, one of these classes will be perfect for you. The classes will meet each Sunday morning in the Conference Room beginning September 10, and will be taught by Dr. Barry Ritchie. See below to decide which class time is the best fit for your Sunday morning worship schedule. So that we can get an accurate count, please let Barry know which class you’ll be attending by contacting him either by phone at (480) 839-1382 (please leave a message if there’s no answer) or send him an email at [email protected]. See you there!
At 8:40 AM each Sunday morning: The Gospel According to Luke
The Gospel of Luke was intended to spread and defend the Good News about Jesus to the entire world. Written to people unfamiliar with the Jewish background of Jesus and the apostles, this Gospel shows Jesus is the Savior of all humanity. Luke helps us better communicate not only to each other, but also to an unbelieving and sometimes hostile world, the truth that Jesus truly came to reach everyone: rich and poor, Jew and Gentile, devout and unreligious… and you and me.
At 10:10 AM each Sunday morning: The Gospel According to Mark
The Gospel of Mark breathlessly gives the eyewitness remembrances of those who lived with, worked alongside, and witnessed who Jesus was. Likely the first written Gospel and based on Peter’s recollections, the Gospel of Mark tells with great urgency how Jesus came with the power of God to call the lost, heal the sick, and to save the world from sin and death.

Sunday Volunteer Sign-up Process Our Sunday morning volunteer positions are scheduled through Planning Center. We are using a tool in Planning Center called Sign-up-Sheets. Rather than the office scheduling you, now you will be able to choose which Sundays/service you’d like to serve.
At the beginning of each month you will receive an email asking you to select which Sundays you would like to serve. These dates will be saved in your Planning Center account and you’ll receive reminder emails as the date approaches.
We know that some of our married couples that use Planning Center share the same email address. If you do, here’s what we need ONE of you to do: (One of you may keep your current password, but the other needs to create a new one). Enter the link to get to the sign-in page of Planning Center at https://accounts.planningcenteronline.com. Type in your email address and click the checkmark button. Remember, if you share an email address with another Planning Center user, you must keep track of which account you’re accessing when you are signing up or making changes to your schedule.
Another hint: any time you’re in Planning Center you can identify the account by looking at the top right of your browser window. Thank you for your patience as we continue to learn this software. Please call Susan Myres with questions, 480-895-6782.
