message from your CEODuring September we released our financial results for the first half of 2010 and I am pleased to report
that we have delivered growth in revenue and profit in excess of 30% during the period.
The backlog continues to strengthen to just over US$1.6bn as of the end of June, and it is particularly
pleasing to report a substantial growth in orders on hand in Australasia where we see continued project
growth. The outlook remains positive for projects in the onshore oil and gas sector across a number of
regions and some noteworthy contract awards in the past six months places Kentz in a good position to
capitalise on future opportunities.
Recent significant contract wins include: the award of a contract from Chicago Bridge and Iron (CB&I) and
Clough to design and build the construction camp at the Hides Gas Plant for the Papua New Guinea LNG
Project (pages 4–5); the award of a US$30m contract by SNC-Lavalin on the Ambatovy Nickel Project in
Madagascar, set to be amongst the largest long-life nickel projects in the world (page 3); and the award
of a US$36m contract by Qatar Petroleum at its Halul Island facility in Qatar (page 10).
Our strategy of focusing on core clients and our strong track record of delivering projects in remote
locations has served us well. The acquisition in August of a 49% interest in Dome General Contracting
Company Ltd (Iraq), a leading supplier of equipment and services to the Middle East energy sector,
provides the platform for the Group to actively pursue EPC project opportunities with many of the newly
established operating companies in the region.
Elsewhere in the Middle East I am delighted to welcome Nadine Choufani as the first female Kentz
employee in the Saudi Arabian office following the change in regulation to encourage the entry of women
into the private sector workforce.
On page 16 you can read about the Kentz Saudi Kayan Project team which has recently achieved three
million man-hours without a lost time incident. Safety continues to be the number one value for Kentz and
we are proud to report a number of safety milestones also achieved in Thailand, Australia and South Africa.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you again for your hard work and continued commitment to
Kentz.

IRELAND
Kentz in Ireland is proud to have been involved with theconstruction of the magnificent new Aviva Stadium which wasofficially opened on 14th May by the Taoiseach (Irish PrimeMinister) Brian Cowen.
Kentz was awarded the contract for the electrical works on thestadium in 2008 and practical completion was obtained onschedule on 30th April 2010.
The former Lansdowne Road Stadium is the oldest internationalrugby ground in the world and has hosted Irish rugby for over130 years. The first match played at the stadium was betweenLeinster and Ulster in December 1876.
The new 62,000m2, 50,000-seater Aviva Stadium is locatedadjacent to Lansdowne Road railway station in Dublin and ishome to chief tenants, the Irish Rugby Union Team and theRepublic of Ireland National Football Team.
It is a world-class stadium that caters to the modern sportsenthusiasts and also features state-of-the-art green credentials. The stadium is Ireland’s first, and only, UEFA Elite Stadium andin 2011 it will host the Europa League Final.
The stadium has four tiers of seating around three sides of thepitch, sweeping down to one level at the north end andprovides high-quality viewing facilities for all spectators. Thenorth stand is single-tiered due to its proximity to local housingand applies clever use of clear glass to minimise noisepollution.
All the seating is protected by a continuous curvilinear roofwhich has been designed to undulate in a wave-like manner soas to avoid blocking light to local residences and is open abovethe pitch to provide maximum sunlight to the high performanceturf.
The first rugby union game at the Aviva was an exhibition gameheld on 31st July, involving the under-18 and under-20 playersfrom all four of Ireland’s provincial sides. The first soccer matchin the stadium was Manchester United FC against a League ofIreland XI side.
The Kentz Project team was led by Richard Geoghegan, SeniorProject Manager, who was supported by EPC Engineering, PCEngineering, Project Controls, Procurement, QA/QC, Safety,Construction and Commissioning.
PC Electrical SystemsThese consist of a 2.5MVA incoming utility supply that issynchronised with four 1,700 kVA diesel generators located onthe 6th floor of the stadium. To ensure the stadium has a minimalimpact on standard background noise, the acousticrequirements on the generators are extremely stringent, onlypermitting 53 Db at a 1-metre distance. The low-noise dieselgenerators produce an abundance of heat and each generatoris fitted with large radiators and heat exchangers that actuallypre-heat the water for use in the bathrooms and kitchens. Theremainder of the heated water forms the under-pitch heatingsystem to keep the pitch frost-free.
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) SystemThe overall power system is controlled and monitored by aSCADA power management system capable of opening andclosing all main MV and LV breakers. It has the capability todivert power ensuring that as many switchboards as possibleare kept live in the event of a fault and ensuring that M+1 isachieved, allowing even a UEFA match to continue. The systemis also capable of monitoring all main LV loads and sheddingthese LV loads where required. As part of the electricalinstallation, Kentz was responsible for the commissioning of theSCADA system with interfaces to the Building ManagementSystem.
The Distribution System There are 254 distribution boards and 89 lighting control panelslocated in the various risers and communications rooms in thestadium. There are also 16 motor control centres located in themechanical plant rooms throughout the site, which in turncontrol all the mechanical equipment in the stadium.
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) System All communications and life safety systems are backed up withfive number packaged UPS units located on the ground and 6th
floor of the stadium. These units distribute secure power to allsecurity, communications and AV panels site wide.
The Sports Lighting System As a major international sporting venue, Aviva is equipped withspecialised sports lighting capable of delivering 2,500 Lux onthe playing surface. This allows for high definition television tobe broadcast around the world and also provides a highly

developed lighting analysis that can map light at every point onthe pitch.
Internal LightingThe stadium has in the region of 18,000 individual light fittingsfor day-to-day use, architectural impact, security use, restaurant and conference facilities. In such a large building itis important for lighting to be efficient and to minimise energyusage, so lighting on all areas and levels is controlled by acentral l ighting controls package; capable of controll ingelements such as dimming lights in an individual corporate boxprior to kick-off, or switching off all the lights (except thoserequired for security and safety) post-match.
Data Switching Network There is a dedicated, resilient data switching network for thetransmission of all security and business critical data for thestadium. The system comprises wired switches and wirelessaccess points for premium areas. Third-party networkedsystems operate on this network to include catering and retaildata systems, turnstiles, gaming franchises, business systemsfor the stadium owners and operators, and potentially manyother applications. The data network also caters for journalistsand photographers who require state-of-the-art digital facilitieswith instantaneous connections to news organisations.
Public Address and Voice Alarm System This provides the big stadium acoustic atmosphere duringpublic events and also provides voice and tone coveragethroughout the facility in the case of an emergency. Assistedhearing facilities (magnetic induction loops) are provided atpoints of sale and in conferencing areas. There areapproximately 2,500 speakers and 22 amplifier racks on theproject.
IPTV System This allows broadcast TV content (e.g. Sky News and RTE2)and custom in-house channels to be distributed to TV setsinstalled around the stadium.
Life Safety Systems Fire Detection and Disabled Persons Alarm call systems areincluded for public safety. There are six fire alarm panels whichare monitored in the events control room and the security
room. There are 1,400 smoke heads and fire alarm points in thestadium which interface with the sprinkler system and cateringunits.
Security Systems These protect the stadium facility and its patrons through theapplication of modern Access Control, CCTV and IntruderDetection components, integrated into a single operatorplatform known as the Security Management System andmonitored in the main security room and the main event controlroom.
The Outside Broadcasting System (OBS)This comprises the complete cabling infrastructure for thetelevising and broadcasting of live sporting events from thestadium. The system caters for standard and high definitiontransmissions with interfaces for the many internationalbroadcasters that will make their way to the Aviva Stadium. Thesource of the OBS is the TV cameras. The signals aretransmitted via plug-in wall boxes to the TV Channel MobileBroadcast Units which are located in the satellite (OBS) park.
The Ref Link System This allows spectators to tune in to the referee’scommunication system for real-time knowledge of refereeingdecisions.
The Lightning Protection Systems was designed, installedand commissioned by Kentz.
Safety Kentz participated in the project’s Safety Steering Committeecomprising of: the Main Contractor, Sisk; the ProjectManagement team; and the Client, Lansdowne Road StadiumDevelopment Company (LRSDC). Kentz in conjunction with thevendors and subcontractors launched a Project Safety InitiativeProgramme. There were raffles held every month for achievingthe safety targets, all the electricians and apprentices wereinvolved in the raffle and ten prizes were on offer. The vendoror subcontractor that donated the prizes for that month did thepresentations. The programme worked very well and Kentzwould like to thank all the vendors who participated.

process shutdown, the plant was brought back on line
on time.
All in all, over 2,000m3 of sediment and drilling mud
was removed from the vessels. Final battery limit
blinds were swung on 22nd August.
It was a safe, incident-free shutdown with zero leaks
upon start-up. KentzDEM completed the shutdown on
schedule and has made its mark on Sakhalin in terms
of shutdown planning, management and execution
services.

The Kentz-SMNM JV also had a team responsible for all facility
“tie-ins” associated with the plant’s Onshore Expansion Project.
On 18th July 2010, while preparing for the first facility shutdown
to be undertaken at ExxonMobil’s Chayvo OPF the team
undertook the first “project piping tie-ins”.
These works were executed prior to the full plant shutdown
which was carried out in August and involved the installation of
new piping spools, complete with double block and bleed valve
arrangements on areas of the expansion works where
associated plant operations had already been shut down. The
works were completed safely and on time. In recognition of
their diligence and application, the team in question was
singled out by the client’s management team for special
mention for the safe and professional manner in which these
works were carried out.
The successful “Tie-In work” continued throughout the full
facility shutdown in August, when Kentz-SMNM successfully
completed 26 Piping “Tie-Ins”. All works were completed with
no safety incidents or near misses, along with a
leak free start-up.
As a result of the above Kentz-SMNM has now
been awarded further MEIP works through to the
end of the Chayvo Onshore Expansion (COE)
Project which is expected to be completed by the
end of December 2012.

Kentz commenced work with Linde on two Air Separation Unit
(ASU) trains for the Shell Pearl Gas to Liquids (GTL) Project in
2009, and has since racked up over three million man hours
without a lost time incident (LTI).
The project, based in Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar, peaked at
manpower capacity of 1,000 employees for Kentz and the team
was delighted and proud to receive the “Contractor of the Quarter”
award from Linde/Shell for HSE commitment and performance
from January 2010 to March 2010. Kentz as always continues its
efforts in leading the way on the project with an incident and injury
free culture.
Kentz’s scope of work is for the supply of all Project Management,
Supervision, Planning, Quality Control, HSE Management, Material
Control and Direct Labour for the complete Electrical,
Instrumentation, Telecommunications and Fire and Gas
Installations including all pre-commissioning activities.
The electrical scope of work includes the Installation of all MV and
LV transformers and switchgear in two sub stations and the
Installation and Termination of all underground cables to the eight
independent plants.
The instrumentation, telecommunications and fire and gas scope
of work includes the Installation of all Distributed Control System
(DCS) cabinets and telecommunication cabinets in four field
auxiliary rooms and the Installation and Termination of all
underground cables to field junction boxes,
instruments and telecommunication field items.
It also includes the Installation and Testing of all
instrument hook-up details in an oxygen
environment and the Loop Checking of all
instrument loops based on a field bus system.
The main purpose of the ASU plant is to provide.
l Gaseous Oxygen of high purity to feed the Shell Gasification
Process (SGP) reactors
l Liquid Oxygen of high purity, which will be stored and can be
used for short-term GOX back up
l LP Gaseous Nitrogen which will be used as an inert gas utility in
the GTL Complex
l HP Gaseous Nitrogen which will be used for purging the HPS
reactors and the regeneration gas compressor system
l Liquid Nitrogen which will be stored in liquid form as a source for
HPN and LPGAN.
l Instrument Air which will be provided as a utility for the GTL
complex.
The ASUs form an integral and essential part of the Shell GTL plant
and primarily provide the oxygen to the Shell Gasification Process
for the production of synthesis gas which is the main feed stock to
the Liquid Processing Units (LPU) to become finished products.
The steam required to drive the ASU machinery is generated by
the reactions that take place in the processing units.
Construction of the plants started in early 2009 and the scheduled
completion is the end of 2010. Commissioning works have
started in the phase 1 Units with handover of the liquid Nitrogen
storage unit to shell operations.

The 4th Train Landlord Project in Secunda, South Africa is nearingcompletion. The project was awarded in late 2009 and the client onthe project is Sastech, with Foster Wheeler as the ManagingContractor.
Kentz’s scope of work on the project included Supply, Fabricationand Installation of structural steel racks, platforms, ReverseOsmosis Building, Fabrication and Installation of free issue pipesystems including installation of mechanical equipment. Three tie-ins to the existing plant were done during the October 2009 plantshutdown.
A total of 13,888 diameter inches of welding was calculated for thepipework, of which Kentz estimated 60% to be completed in theworkshop in Evander, before transporting to site. However, following a micro planning review, it was established that this couldbe increased by 20%.
SafetyAs always, safety on the project was the first priority and Kentzreceived awards for maintaining a very high standard. CorrieTopham, Construction Manager, and Rudi Boshoff, SiteConstruction Manager, were awarded Contractor of the Month fortwo months in a row.
Rashaad Hunter, Piping Supervisor, and then Simon Masipule,Piping Supervisor, also received Supervisor of the Month awardsand Barry Geldenhuys, HSE Site Manager, was awarded SafetyOfficer of the Month for April 2010. This is another great
achievement particularly when working in a live plant. Safetyincentives in the form of shopping vouchers were handed out to allKentz employees.
Overview of PlantThe 4th Train Landlord plant is a water treatment plant. Water fromthe massive cooling towers is piped into the plant and then filteredin stages down to microscopic levels to remove even the smallestsolid suspended in the water. The water is then classed as polishedwater.
It then goes through further cleaning processes to remove all tracesof iron and finally through a Reverse Osmosis plant that removes alltraces of chemicals.
This purified water is then distributed to other areas of SasolSecunda.

The Construction Business Unit in South Africa was recently
awarded the Fischer–Tropsch (F–T) Wax Plant Site Preparation,
Electrical and Instrumentation (E&I) Installation by Foster Wheeler
(SA) Pty Ltd on behalf of Sasol Chemical Industries, Sasol 1,
Sasolburg, South Africa.
Kentz’s scope of work consists of the E&I and site preparation for
the new R8 billion F–T Wax Plant being constructed at the plant in
Sasolburg. The project includes the construction of new
contractors facilities including: an access gate to the south of the
plant, a car park and lay-down areas, as well as the demolition of
redundant plant areas including the rerouting of electrical,
instrumentation and telecommunication cables, the supply of
power to temporary facilities and the relocation of the Phenol
Drum Loading Facility to make way for the New F–T Wax Plant.
The Fischer–Tropsch process (or
Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis) is a set of
chemical reactions that convert a
mixture of carbon monoxide and
hydrogen into liquid hydrocarbons.
The process, a key component of gas
to liquids technology, produces a
petroleum substitute, typically from
coal, natural gas or biomass for use
as synthetic lubrication oil and as
synthetic fuel. The F–T process has
received intermittent attention as a source of low-sulfur diesel fuel
and as a means of addressing the supply or cost of petroleum-
derived hydrocarbons.
The Kentz Project team, which is headed up
by Nick McCarthy, E&I Operation Manager
for Southern Africa and Essa Bux, Site
Manager for the F–T Wax Plant E&I, was
recently awarded Safety Officer of the Month
of June 2010, Site Supervisor of the Month
of July 2010 and best kept/cleanest

IRELAND
sharing for the futureThe chief executive of Kentz, Hugh O’Donnell,
recently took the opportunity while back in
Ireland to return to his alma mater, the University
of Limerick, to deliver the 2010 ULAA Alumni
Lecture.
Hugh, who is an Honours Graduate of
Mechanical Engineering from the University,
was delighted to see so many of his alumni as
well as lecturers, students and local business
people, and to share with them anecdotes of his
experience of working in many far flung parts of
the world for Kentz.
The title of Hugh’s talk was Irish Culture Driving
International Business – The Story of
Kentz. In his own words “leveraging of the
humility, humour and modesty of the Irish
culture all over the world to go and achieve
things that others dare not”.
When Hugh graduated from UL in the
depressed Ireland of 1987, opportunities for
junior engineers were thin on the ground and
like many of his peers, he emigrated. Hugh
drew parallels between his own experience and
the reality faced by many young graduates
today; emphasising that the opportunities are
there for a young and well-educated Irish
workforce, with these inherent qualities to get
out there and make a difference!
Kentz employee, Pauline Carroll, recently
graduated from the Tipperary Institute (TI) with a
Marketing Certificate, and Hugh was also
pleased to join her at TI to talk to students, staff
and prospective students of the college.
The audience included the Future Business
Leaders of Ireland (FBLI) committee, which
recently won the “Newstalk Student Enterprise
Competition” and travelled to the Caribbean in
the summer to shadow senior executives in the
Digicel Group.
Hugh spoke about the growth and development
of Kentz; from a small domestic electrical
contractor to the one billion dollar global oil
services company it is today, with all the bumps
in the road along the way. He encouraged the
students to seize opportunities and shared with
them some of the challenges he had faced and
why a ‘tolerance for ambiguity’ goes a long way
in business.
Hugh believes that despite the expansion in its
global footprint the entrepreneurial spirit and
culture in Kentz has remained largely the same
and working with Kentz people is still
overwhelmingly the most rewarding part of his
job.
It was a fantastic and interactive session with
lots of questions about the current economic
situation and international business. At one
stage Hugh was asked about his own career
ambitions and whether he would consider
taking Brian Cowen’s place as Taoiseach
(Prime Minister) of Ireland! Thankfully
Hugh’s commitment for the foreseeable future
is to Kentz.

Patrick, Mayor of Leogane. Attendees included
school management and staff, pupils and parents
and representatives from USAID.
This boys’ primary school, founded in 1920, was
completely destroyed in the earthquake. The new
school will accommodate 300 pupils. Extending
his gratitude to Kentz, the Digicel Foundation and
USAID, Mr. Patrick declared that this construction
was another stone in the reconstruction of
Leogane. He added that while they never forget
those who died, this occasion offered everyone
an opportunity to move forward and look to the
future.
The completion of Ecole des Freres Louis Borno
came not long after the completion of St. Gerard’s
School in Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital.
The Kentz/Digicel Foundation team has been extremely busy in Haiti over the
summer months. In June 2010, Mark Ford, Project Manager, and his team
started work on two new sites. The first was a fabrication yard for
prefabricating components for use in constructing schools. The second was
the construction of a primary school at Leogane, the town at the epicentre of
January’s earthquake.
The fabrication factory unit is now complete and 80% of the classrooms are
being constructed here with the remaining 20% of the assembly work being
undertaken on site. Mark Ford will be in charge of the factory unit and John
Skelly, Construction Manager, will be heading up construction and assembly
work at various school locations in and around the capital.
The Kentz/Digicel team, supported by the Digicel Group and their United
States (US) Ministry of Education funding partner, United States Agency for
International Development (USAID), set out plans to construct 50 new schools
in Haiti. Fifteen of these schools will be transitional or semi-permanent. The
remaining 35 schools will be traditional permanent structures.
At the beginning of June construction work began
on a transitional six classroom primary school in
Leogane, two hours west of Port-au-Prince. Most
of the buildings in Leogane were destroyed,
including all the schools. Classes were conducted
in tents provided by UNICEF. Kentz/Digicel has
undertaken to construct 10 schools in Leogane.

The next school scheduled for construction is in Cite Soleil,
the most deprived area in Port-au-Prince. This slum area
has been ravaged by gang violence for many years, with
the result that Haitian government departments, as well as
many international agencies, refuse to undertake any work
there. Kentz/Digicel has just received funding of
US$92,000 to rebuild the St. Jeanne de Chantal School.
The management and staff of Kentz would like to thank
Mark Ford, Project Manager, and John Skelly, Construction
Manager, for their ongoing efforts in helping to rebuild Haiti.

Saudi Arabia was the first overseas market
Kentz entered in 1976. Up until recently the
employment of women in the workplace was
restricted to particular sectors of the economy.
When King Abdullah took over the reins of
power from King Fahd, he put significant
resources into education and particularly
women’s education and has encouraged the
entry of women into the private sector.
In June 2010 Kentz in Saudi Arabia welcomed
Nadine Choufani as its first female employee.
Nadine was born in Saudi Arabia on 20th
October 1988. She moved to the Lebanon
when she was thirteen, where she went to high

Business Management in 2005. During her
time in college she got many opportunities to
gain valuable work experience in companies
such as Bank Audi and Grey Worldwide, a
privately-held company specialising in the
marketing and advertising industry. She then
did an internship for Starcom MediaVest Group
which is a media production company.
Nadine graduated from the American

Kentz Construction Business Unit in South Africa recently made a
generous donation to assist Yolandi Theart, Cost Administrator on
the Richard’s Bay TTP Project, and her family provide food parcels
to 67 families in need. Yolandi and her sisters Antoinette, Rene and
their partners were inspired by Nelson Mandela’s (“Madiba”) 92nd
birthday request “to do something for charity and to give back to
the community for 67 minutes on Sunday 18th July”. Nelson
Mandela dedicated 67 years of his life to freedom and always
remained positive!
They decided as a family to do something uplifting; and came up
with the idea of providing food parcels to 67 people within
67 minutes!
After some quick planning, within four days
they managed to find a few sponsors to donate
non-perishable food which enabled them to
make up food parcels. They located 30 families
in need; from the elderly to small babies.
Yolandi was very grateful that they were able to
feed 30 families and they also managed to
donate food for the homeless to churches in
the area. This event was a great success,
greater than anticipated, and has inspired the
group to do more for the community on a
regular basis and to become more involved with
charity.
Some feedback from the elderly (all these
people live in very poor conditions):
“ons kry baie swaar – en dit wat julle vir ons
vandag doen; sal verewig in ons gedagtes
bly – Baie Dankie Mandela” which translated
means “We have a very tough time and what
you’re doing for us today will remain in our thoughts for
always. Thank you very much, Mandela.” Zelda Beukes
“We are so thankful – these food parcels mean so much to us;
may God Bless You.” Mrs. Oosthuizen
Congratulations to Yolandi and her team for this inspiring incentive
and for reaching out to the less fortunate.
