Multiple reconfiguration is made possible with this designThe major capacity for information exchange and processing means that the Mistral class can constantly be kept updated about the local situation. The ease with which personnel and material (stores, medical and survival equipment, munitions, vehicles, helicopters and craft) can be moved about on-board, the disposition of storage areas, the well-positioned dockside access and the wide passageways are all features that enable the ship to be prepared and loaded in only a few hours. As well as providing a large surface for air operations, the open deck can also act as a buffer zone for reconfiguration during transit even at maximum load.
Operational experienceThe LHD have shown their worth under various configurations: summer 2006 operation Baliste: in
only two weeks, the Mistral evacuated several thousand people from Lebanon whilst also providing support to UN forces, 2011 operation Harmattan: Mistral
and Tonnerre deployed army combat helicopters over Libyan territory, NATO-certified MCC HQ (Maritime
Component Command) and CATF HQ (Combinet Amphibious Task Force of the NATO Response Force).
