AGENTS NOTES The property can be approached from two directions

- via the shared pedestrian path from Old School Hill next to No1 Rose

Cottages or a private pedestrian access through the bottom garden.

As is traditional for many cottages of this age, the gardens are detached

from the house. Both top and bottom gardens can be reached by walking

past No4 Rose Cottages (see video for details).

South Stoke is named as such as the most southerly of the possessions

of the Benedictine Monastery of Bath (the manor was originally granted

to the monastery by Ethelred the First) although it has been inhabited

since Roman times - Reverend Skinner, the Rector of Camerton in the

early 1800s and a well known local archaeologist, recorded Roman

remains all across the parish. The road through the village and on over

Hodshill to Bisham Bridge and Wellow was originally the main road from

Bath to Wells.

In 1829/30, carver and gilder Thomas Hunt built five cottages in South

Stoke village. Snowdrop Cottage and the four Rose Cottages, following

his marriage to Ann Love (widow of South Stoke land-tax collector

Richard Love). The couple went on to become the parish's most

important land developers of the 19th century.
