Introduction

We (Hans Westerlaken, Peter van Scheepen and Dick Meijer) decided to make a second

birding trip to Colombia after we joined the Colombia Endemics Tour organized by Pablo

Florez of Multicolor Birding Colombia in 2013 (Hans) or 2012 (Peter and Dick)

Our plan during this second trip was:

To find endemic and near–endemic or difficult to find elsewhere species we missed or

heard only on the first trip:

o Endemics: Colombian Chachalaca (Hans), Black Inca (Hans), Silvery–throated

Spinetail (Hans), Turquoise Dacnis (Peter and Dick) and Yellow–headed Brush–

Finch (Hans);

o Near–endemics or elsewhere difficult or much sought–after: Golden–bellied

Starfrontlet, Blue–throated Starfrontlet, Subtropical Doradito and Rufous–

browed Conebill.

To visit new areas and to find additional endemic and near–endemic or difficult to find

elsewhere species:

o Endemics: Blue–billed Curassow, Gorgeted Wood–Quail, Tolima Dove, Chestnut–

bellied Hummingbird , Upper–Magdalena Tapaculo, Cundinamarca Antpitta,

Nicefero’s Wren, Mountain Grackle and Velvet–fronted Euphonia;

o Near–endemics or difficult elsewhere or much sought–after: Recurve–billed

Bushbird, Chestnut–crowned Gnateater, Black–billed Flycatcher and Scarlet–

browed Tanager.

To visit Amazonian habitat with white sand specialists and other birds difficult to find

elsewhere:

o White sand specialists: Gray–legged Tinamou, Tawny–tufted Toucanet, Bronzy

Jacamar, Orinoco Piculet, Bar–bellied Woodcreeper, White–chinned

Woodcreeper, Cherrie’s Antwren, Yellow–throated Antwren, Gray–bellied

Antbird, Chestnut–crested Antbird, Spot–backed Antbird, Pompadour Cotinga,

Black Manakin, Saffron–crested Tyrant–Manakin, Brown–headed Greenlet,

Azure–naped Jay, White–naped Seedeater, Citron–bellied Attila, Brown–capped

Greenlet, and Collared Gnatwren.

o Difficult elsewhere or much sought–after: Pavonine Quetzal, Yellow–billed

Jacamar, Chestnut–capped Puffbird, Spotted Puffbird, Rusty–breasted Nunlet,

Pearly Antshrike, Black Bushbird, Amazonian Streaked Antwren, White–plumed

Antbird, Imeri Warbling–Antbird, Yellow–crowned Manakin, Guianan Cock–of–

the–Rock and White–bellied Dacnis.

To enjoy the different habitats of Colombia and to have a great trip.

We contacted Pablo Florez again to organize our trip, which he did perfectly. We had a

schedule enabling us to execute our plan and to find our target species. We arrived in

Bogotá on 22nd July and left again on 10th or 11th August. We visited Pedropalo, Chicaque,

Ibagué, Monterredondo, Parque La Florida, Mitú, Jardin Encantado, El Paujil and the

Cerulean Warbler Reserve and recorded 549 species of which 40 were heard only. We saw

19 Colombian endemic and 14 near –endemic species. Also we recorded 7 species of

mammal. We photographed 106 species of birds and over 100 were recorded on video. We

succeeded in finding all endemic target species except Cundinamarca Antpitta (despite

considerable effort) and Mountain Grackle (spent 1,5 hours at a stake out). We saw all the

near–endemic target species and Andean target species which are difficult in other

countries. As a group – some species were missed by individuals – we saw most of the white

sand specialists except White–naped Seedeater. We were very happy with the recorded

Amazonian target species which are difficult to find in other countries. In fact we saw more

than we expected, e.g. Reddish–winged Bare–eye and Barred Forest–Falcon.

Since we had a hassle–free trip and saw a great deal of our targets we look back at a very

successful trip.

Day–by–day account

22 July

Peter flew in from Amsterdam and Hans from Frankfurt with Lufthansa and Dick from Aruba

with Avianca and we met each other at Bogotá’s international airport ‘El Dorado’. Were

taken by minibus to Hotel Casona del Patio, which has become a meeting point of

birdwatchers visiting Colombia and their guides and drivers. The temperature in Bogotá at

2500 m. was 15 ° C, significantly lower than in the places from which we flew in. Slept in the

quiet and clean Hotel Casona del Patio, Bogotá (www.casonadelpatio.com).

23 July

Left Bogotá at 5.30 hrs. for the long drive by minibus to Ibagué, met our guide Juan Carlos at

the bus station, stopped at Pedropalo and Chicaque. Had lunch in Girardot and did some

roadside birding between 13.00 and 18.30 hrs. mainly to stretch our legs while looking for

Velvet–fronted Euphonia in vain, the birding in the warm Rio Magdalena Valley being rather

slow at midday. Best birds: a heard only Moustached Puffbird in Pedropalo, Golden–bellied

Starfrontlet in Chicaque and Shining–Green Hummingbird in the Magdalena Valley. The

weather was chilly and rainy in Bogotá but hot and dry in the Magdalena Valley. Slept in

hotel Los Ocobos Plaza, Ibagué, which was okay, though noisy at night

24 July

Left Ibagué at 5.30 hrs., drove to Juntas and spent the whole day in Cañon del Combeima

intermittently driving and walking the road on top of the cliffs with stunning views of the

canyon and the Rio Combeima. Parked our car at the parking place at the end of the road

and walked another 60 minutes on a steep trail to Los Termales. Best birds: Blossomcrown

(Endemic), Tolima Dove (Endemic, seen by Hans at the parking place) and several heard by

all of us, two obliging White–capped Tanagers, Grass–Green Tanager, a flock with

Oleaginous – and Black–capped Hemispingus and Ashy–throated Bush–Tanager, White–

capped Dipper (close to Los Termales hot springs) and Capped Conebill. A productive birding

day with beautiful weather. Slept in hotel Los Ocobos Plaza, Ibagué.

25 July

Drove from Ibagué at 5.30 hrs. in less than 30 minutes to Clarita Botero, where we soon had

excellent scope views of the much sought–after Tolima Dove, perched in a tree in the valley

below us. Other good birds at Clarita Botero were: Bar–crested Antshrike, Yellow–tufted

Dacnis and Slaty Spinetail. Drove to Payande from 6.00 to 7.30 hrs. and birded along a side

road which produced: White–bellied Antbird, a much appreciated Little Cuckoo, Pileated

Finch, Mouse–colored Tyrannulet and Slate–headed Tody–Flycatcher. Along the access road

to Cascadas de Chicla we quickly found the Velvet–fronted Euphonia (Endemic), Yellow

Oriole and Tropical Gnatcatcher. Left the Payande area at 10.00 hrs. for the long drive to the

Eastern slope of the eastern Andes, lunched at Melgar and had a birding stop at Chicaque

from 15.00 to 16.00 hrs. Arrived at Quetame at 19.30 hrs. The weather was fine during the

day but rainy in the evening. Slept in the very basic hotel Panorama after an equally ‘basic’

dinner in the restaurant with sufficient character (www.quetame.galeon.com).

Juan at Monterredondo

26 July

Left our hotel at 5.00 hrs. and climbed the winding road of Monterredondo above Quetame

by minibus. Walked intermittently, birding the pristine cloud forest at this elevation (1700 –

3015 m.). The much much sought–after and endemic Cundinamarca Antpitta (nicknamed

‘Guerrilla Antpitta’ after an American birdwatcher was kidnapped here a few years ago)

remained silent and was thus not to be found. Still we had some good birds: Tiny Hawk,

Barred – and Black–and–Green Fruiteater, an undisputable Blue–throated Starfrontlet, a

heard only Rufous Antpitta, Golden–crowned Tanager and Rufous–headed Pygmy–Tyrant.

Drove to the parking near the summit at 3015 m. where heavy rainfall forced us downhill

again at 13.00 hrs. Since the rain didn’t stop and we were more or less washed away we left

the mountain and drove back to Bogotá, slightly disappointed. Slept in hotel Ibis Museo,

Bogotá in clean but rather small rooms (www.ibis.com/nl/hotel–7318–ibis–bogota–museo).

In the lobby of the hotel we met our company for the Mitú week; Nick Preston (UK), Richard

Fairbank (UK) and Wim Wisse (NL), as well as Pablo Florez, our guide in Mitú.

27 July

Left our hotel at 5.30 hrs. and drove to Parque La Florida where we quite easily found

Apolinar’s Wren (Endemic), several Subtropical Doraditos (missed by all of us during our

previous visit, not always an easy bird), Rufous–browed Conebill and the endemic Silvery-

throated Spinetail (missed by Hans a year ago). The roosting tree of Striped Owl could not be

found though. Flew with Satena from Bogotá to Mitú from 12.30 to 13.30 hrs. and drove by

3W–mototaxis and minibus to our hotel Los Paisas (www.hotellospaisas.com). Drove by 3W–

mototaxis to the roofed bridge at the beginning of the Urania trail, walked the trail and

climbed the bare rock Casa de los Chulos with a view over the Rio Vaupes from 15.00 to

18.00 hrs. Best birds at Urania: splendid views of Spotted Puffbird, Green–tailed

Goldenthroat, Rufous–cowned Elaenia, Ochre–bellied Flycatcher and Azure–naped Jay. Slept

in hotel Los Paisas, Mitú, a perfect basis with clean, spacey and air–conditioned rooms,

provided with all conveniences.

28 July

Left our hotel at 4.30 hrs. by 4WD–car which had a loose wheel halfway and could not

continue, birded in the surroundings of the main road and were eventually taken to

Cachivera Ceima, which holds a lek of Guianan Cock–of–the Rock by 3W–mototaxis (plan B,

Pueblo Nuevo being too far for the mototaxi). Walked the trails till 14.30 hrs. when birding

had become slow and we took a bath in the rapids of the river. Best birds in the morning:

Black–throated Antbird, Dusky Antbird, Dusky–chested Flycatcher, Black–bellied Thorntail,

Golden–headed – and Blue–crowned Manakin, Yellow–browed Antbird, Yellow–billed and

Bronzy Jacamar, Amazonian Swift and of course Guianan Cock–of–the–Rock, one of the best

birds of our trip. Drove with repaired 4WD–car from Cachivera Ceima to Urania bridge where

we birded till 18.15 hrs. The roof of the bridge offered perfect shelter against heavy rainfall

at the end of the afternoon. Best birds in the afternoon: Amazonian Tyrannulet, Scale–

breasted Woodpecker, Blackish–gray Antshrike, Cherrie’s Antwren and American Pygmy–

Kingfisher. Slept in hotel Los Paisas, Mitú.

29 July

Left our hotel at 4.30 hrs. to bird the Mitú Cachivera trails till 18.30 hrs. Met local guide

Miguel at the bridge across Caño Sangre. Walked the trails beyond the village in white sand

forest which gradually becomes terra firme forest. Had heavy rainfall from 8.30 – 10.30 hrs.

when we had to shelter under a rock. Best birds: Pale–tailed Barbthroat (seen by Dick),

Gray–bellied Antbird, Pompadour– and Spangled Cotinga, White–browed Purpletuft, Spot–

throated Woodcreeper, Opal–rumped Tanager, Double–banded Pygmy–Tyrant, a glimpse of

Collared Gnatwren and Pectoral Sparrow (seen by Dick). White sand specialist White–naped

Seedeater and terra firma lover Pavonine Quetzal didn’t show themselves. Slept in hotel Los

Paisas, Mitú.

Mitú Cachivera trail, Mitú

30 July

Left our hotel at 4.15 to bird Mitú Cachivera till 12.15 hrs. Despite the help of hawkeyed

Miguel we could not find White–naped Seedeater, though we did see: Orinoco Piculet,

Guianan Gnatcatcher and Spot–backed Antwren and heard Imeri Warbling–Antbird. Twice

we had to go back to the village to shelter under the roof of a community building because

of heavy rain.

Went back to our hotel to learn that crossing the river to bird the Santa Marta trail would be

impossible because the boatman had used the deposit to buy liquor and got drunk. We

decided to go back to Cachivera Mitú and birded the Bocatoma– or Pipeline trail in white

sand forest from 14.30 to 18.00 hrs. Best birds: White–throated Tinamou (heard only),

Amazonina Umbrellabird along the creek, Yellow–browed Tody–Flycatcher and White–eyed

Tody–Tyrant. Slept in hotel Los Paisas, Mitú.

31 July

Drove by minibus south to Pueblo Nuevo from 4.30 to 5.45 hrs. Birded the terra firme forest

east of the main road from 5.45 to 17.15 hrs. and had the best birding day of our trip with

some very good species: Tawny–tufted Toucanet, White–chinned Woodcreeper (by Peter

and Hans), Bar–bellied Woodcreeper (by Peter), Pearly Antshrike (by Hans), Chestnut–

crested Antbird, Black–headed Antbird, Yellow–throated Antwren, Swainson’s Flycatcher,

the highly appreciated White–plumed Antbird, Fiery Topaz, Black Bushbird, Brown–banded

Puffbird, Barred Forest–Falcon, a completely unexpected Reddish–winged Bare–eye and

Rufous–tailed Xenops. The presence of an ant swarm kept us focused till the end of the

afternoon. The weather was beautiful, no rain today. Slept in hotel Los Paisas, Mitú.

The trail west of the road at Pueblo Nuevo, Mitú

1 August

Drove by minibus again south to Pueblo Nuevo from 4.30 to 5.45 hrs. Birded the trail west of

the main road south of the village from 5.45 to 16.00 hrs. and birded along the main road

and a side road south of the junction to Santa Cruz from 16.00 to 17.30 hrs. Had beautiful

weather all day, but got soaked because of heavy rainfall from 15.00 to 16.00 hrs. Best birds:

finally Pavonine Quetzal, Rusty–breasted Nunlet, Chestnut–capped Puffbird, Spot–backed

Antbird, Ornate Antwren, an elusive Rufous–capped Antthrush, Great Jacamar and a flock of

Ruddy Quail–Doves feeding on the side road. Slept in hotel Los Paisas, Mitú.

2 August

Drove by minibus again south to Pueblo Nuevo and beyond to the Santa Cruz road from 4.30

to 18.00 hrs. Walked along the road, spent some time near the bridge across the Caño

Curura and also birded the Tayazu trail. Had beautiful weather all day but had to shelter in

an empty house from 15.00 to 15.30 hrs. Saw 95 species today. Best birds: Black–eared

Fairy, a heard only Variegated Tinamou, Chestnut–capped Puffbird, great views of Great–

billed Hermit, Ivory–billed Aracari, Curve–billed Scythebill, Dusky–throated Antshrike,

Rufous–tailed Antwren, Pygmy Antwren, White–flanked Antwren, Gray Antwren again,

Imeri Warbling–Antbird seen well, Gray Antbird, Black–faced Antbird, Black–headed Antbird

again, Spot–winged Antbird, Yellow–margined Flycatcher, White–bellied Dacnis and

Amazonian Barred Woodcreeper. Slept in hotel Los Paisas, Mitú.

3 August

Drove to the Mitú Cachivera trails again in an ultimate attempt to find White–naped

Seedeater at the Pipeline trail but also because of the presence of an ant swarm where the

enigmatic and very rare Red–billed Ground–Cuckoo was seen yesterday. Birded the trail and

the forest from 4.45 to 11.00 hrs. without luck. We did see though: White–plumed Antbird,

Scale–backed Antbird and white sand specialists Citron–bellied Attila, Brown–capped

Greenlet, Saffron–crested Tyrant–Manakin and Collared Gnatwren (good views of the latter

this time).

Very good weather today. Flew back from Mitú to Bogotá from 13.40 to 15.00 hrs., said

goodbye to our guide Pablo Florez and were taken to our hotel. Slept in Hotel Casona del

Patio, Bogotá.

4 August

Left Bogotá at 5.30 hrs. after having said goodbye to our British and Dutch friends of the

Mitú trip and drove – with Juan Carlos as our guide again – by pick–up to Jardin Encantado

on the way to El Paujil. The 34 feeders (350 kg of sugar per month!) attract many

hummingbirds: Black–throated Mango, Rufous–tailed Hummingbird, White–vented

Plumeleteer, Indigo–capped Hummingbird (Endemic), Brown – and Sparkling Violet–ear.

Continued our long drive from 8.15 to 16.00 hrs. over busy and winding roads birding on the

way: Northern Screamer, Wattled Jacana, White–headed Marsh–Tyrant and Savanna Hawk.

Drove in a very old Land Rover from Puerto Pinzon to El Paujil and birded the access road

from 16.00 to 18.30 hrs. Best birds: Blue–billed Curassow (Endemic, highly appreciated, one

of the best birds of our trip), Fulvous–vented Euphonia, Chestnut–fronted – and Blue–and–

Yellow Macaw and a heard only Black Antshrike. It was cold in Bogotá, but the weather was

pleasant in the Magdalena Valley. Slept in the Pro Aves lodge of El Paujil: simple, clean and

spacey rooms with air conditioning and a good shower (www.proaves.org/el–paujil–bird–

reserve).

El Paujil

5 August

Crossed the river and walked the uphill trail through beautiful forest from 5.40 to 12.30 hrs.

Found Black–billed Flycatcher along the river and Gray–headed Tanager, Blue–billed

Curassow (heard only), Stripe–throated Hermit, White–mantled Barbet (Endemic), Red–

rumped Woodpecker, Sapayoa (heard only), Yellow–browed Shrike–Vireo, Purple–throated

Fruitcrow, White-mantled Barbet (Endemic) and Plain Xenops higher on the hill. Birded the

access road from 14.30 to 17.30 hrs. which produced Colombian Chachalaca (Endemic),

Sepia–capped Flycatcher, Black–throated Tody–Tyrant, Swallow Tanager and Western Slaty

Antshrike. Went owling in the evening: heard Vermiculated Screech–Owl and finally saw

Mottled Owl. Slept in the Pro Aves lodge of El Paujil.

6 August

Walked the Lomapatoco trail from 6.00 to 11.00 hrs. Best birds: Blue–billed Curassow

(Endemic), King Vulture, Black Hawk–Eagle, Russet–crowned Crake (heard only again),

Rufous Motmot, Black–crested – and Barred Antshrike, Cinnamon Woodpecker, Chestnut–

fronted and Blue–and Yellow Macaw again, Bare–crowned Antbird, Black–headed Tody–

Flycatcher and Sooty Ant–Tanager (Endemic). Drove from El Paujil to San Vincente de

Chucuri from 12.30 (after lunch with Long–billed Starthroat) to 20.45 hrs. partly over bumpy,

unpaved roads in a very dark area without electric power. Slept in hotel Real, San Vincente

de Chucuri, Calle 10, 9–52, which was okay and had light (telephone: 6254948 or 6254349).

Magdalena valley

7 August

Left our hotel at 5.30 hrs. and drove and walked uphill from San Vincente de Chucuri to the

Cerulean lodge, quickly found Nicefero’s Wren (Endemic) and birded around the lodge. Best

Birds: Turquoise Dacnis (Endemic, in highest trees behind lodge), Chestnut–bellied

Hummingbird (Endemic, with some patience at feeders along the road, 500 m. from the

lodge), Indigo–capped Hummingbird (Endemic at the feeders near the lodge). Failed to find

Recurve–billed Bushbird at its traditional site. Walked the Lengerke trail uphill to the

entrance of Cerulean Warbler reserve from 13.30 to 17.30 hrs. Spent some time at the

feeders in the forest. Best birds: Black Inca (Endemic), Gorgeted Wood–Quail (Endemic),

Lined Quail–Dove, Booted Racket–tail, Long–tailed Sylph, Speckled Hummingbird and Buff–

tailed Coronet. Had to walk down the very slippery trail in a hurry because of heavy rainfall

and thus skipped the intended owling. Slept in the Pro Aves lodge of the Cerulean Warbler

reserve, which was more than okay (www.proaves.org/cerulean–warbler–reserve).

8 August

Started our walk uphill to the Cerulean Warbler reserve at 4.00 o’clock and found Cinnamon

Screech–Owl soon after reaching the forest. Walked further uphill through the reserve with

pristine elfin forest till the end of the maintained trail at the ridge where we spent quite

some time to find Mountain Grackle without any–luck though. We did find: Wattled Guan

(heard only), Upper–Magdalena Tapaculo (exceptionally good views!), White–bellied

Antpitta (also very good views), Ornate Flycatcher, Spotted Barbtail and Moustached

Puffbird. Succeeded in walking down hill without breaking precious parts of our bodies. Slept

in the Pro Aves lodge of the Cerulean Warbler reserve.

9 August

Drove from the lodge to the airport of Bucaramanga from 5.00 to 15.30 hrs. with various

stops to find species missed so far. These stops produced; Jet Antbird (highly appreciated),

Plain–colored Tanager and Recurve–billed Bushbird (much much sought–after and to our

great relief, only at the fourth attempt, a few kilometers outside Bucaramanga, one of the

best species of our trip). Said goodbye to our excellent and very kind guide Juan Carlos Luna

([email protected]), flew from Bucaramanga to Bogotá in 40 minutes and were taken

by minibus to hotel The Grace, Calle 66 n 6–18, (www.bogotadesignapartments.com) or

([email protected]), a well–designed hotel with clean rooms, in a quiet part of

Bogotá.

10 August

We decided to visit Museo del Oro in the

morning since no guide was available to join us

on a birding trip to Chingaza in the Eastern

Andes. Also we amused ourselves watching

street theatre, hamster races, Buena Vista

Social Club look–a–like musicians, stall–

holders, etc. Apparently a traditional

happening on Sundays in Bogotá. Peter and

Hans flew back to Europe with Lufthansa at

20.00 hrs. Dick stayed one extra night in hotel

The Grace, Bogotá.

11 August

Dick flew back to Aruba with Avianca at 14.30

hrs.

Museo del Oro, Bogotá

Weather

The weather was beautiful most of the time: chilly in the high Andes and very hot (more

than 30 °C) in both the Magdalena Valley and the lowlands of Mitú. We had heavy rainfall

now and then and on a few occasions the rain made bird watching impossible. We had to

leave Monterredondo and the Cerulean Warbler Reserve early in the afternoon because of

rain. In Mitú heavy rainfall forced us to shelter under a rock for two hours or to hurry to the

community building twice (but not very long) in Mitú Cachivera or to suffer in the forest and

get very wet near Pueblo Nuevo (45 minutes); along the Santa Cruz road we sheltered a

while in an abandoned house. Especially the rain in Mitú deprived us from productive

morning time which was a great pity.

Equipment

Wellingtons turned out to be very useful in Mitú and El Paujil. In Mitú most (not around

Urania though) trails have many ponds and streams which are difficult to cross without

rubber boots and in El Paujil the shallow river needs to be crossed. Also rubber boots

protect a bit against insects and snakes. Umbrellas and ponchos are strongly recommended.

We used our telescopes only now and then because telescope and tripod are not always

easy to handle when walking in the jungle.

Annoyances

Though we look back at a hassle–free trip still a few things were a bit annoying. Beside heavy

rainfall throughout, insect bites in the lowlands are worth mentioning. Despite the use of

DEET and long trousers and sleeves some insects always seem to know how to come in.

Often you don’t realize this until you take a shower. Though we took Malarone pills in Mitú

no recent malaria victims were reported in the areas we visited around Mitú. Traffic in and

around Bogotá is very busy thus it takes quite some time to leave the centre of Bogotá. It

takes many hours to leave Bogotá, drive the winding roads to the valley and cover distances

to other towns: e.g. Bogotá – Ibagué: more than 4 hours, Bogotá – Bucaramanga: 9 hours

(but only 40 minutes by plane!), Bogotá – El Paujil: 7 hours, Bogotá – Cerulean Warbler

reserve: 6 hours (but only 3 hours from Bucaramanga). Finally it seems to be difficult to

make reliable appointments in Mitú about scarce boats or equally scarce 4WD–cars, very

frustrating for both tour leaders and eager bird watchers.
