game that has been moved to Nelson.Australians are expected to be the biggest visitors to the region, with travellers from the United Kingdom and South Africa

behind them, says Lynda. “England play their first game in Dunedin so we are hop-ing to capture their fans on the way down from Auckland and wow them so much they come back on their way back up to the North Island so we get two bites out of

the cherry.”Several Russian billionaires are also confirmed to visit Nelson during the cup, along with some high-pro-file Italian businessmen, says Lynda. It is expected several will arrive on their super-yachts and to help ac-

commodate that, a new super-yacht berth has been added to Wakefield Quay. The news of the French booking follows a story, first reported by Nelson Weekly two months ago, that an operator for Australia House Events – a private business and not part of the Australian Government – is looking at setting up shop in Nelson to help service up to 5000 Australian rugby fans. If it goes ahead it will be the third such base for Australians, with one already set up in Auckland and Wellington. The city’s accommodation is already more

than 80 per cent booked for the night of the Australia v Russia game and more than 60 per cent full for the other games.Lynda says the Nelson businesses should be getting extremely excited about the in-flux. “We have hosted more than 70 journal-ists this year alone and we are expecting another 150 during the tournament, that is huge exposure for Nelson. Businesses I hope have realized that these fans are com-ing and will be prepared. This opportunity is a once-in-a-lifetime for us.”

Excitement builds around re-enactment game as ‘Town’ team namedIt’s a rivalry 141 years in the making and Nelson College will have to be on top of their game to even the score. The re-enactment of the first rugby game played in New Zealand is the showpiece event of the Game On festi-val. The original game, played between Nelson College and “Town”, or Nelson Rugby Football Club, was played at the Bontanics in 1868. A re-enactment

match is being held at the same ground on September 20 and orgainsers are ex-pecting international exposure for the game, which will be played in replica uniforms, with a replica ball and with similar rules to the first game. Yester-day Jack McNab, chair of Nelson Rugby Football Club, announced the 25 players who have been selected to play against Nelson College in the game.

The team includes 15 current play-ers and 10 retired players who were picked from over 60 hopefuls who had expressed an interest in representing the Club. “It wasn’t an easy choice” says McNab. “But we have endeavoured to choose a blend of representatives from various decades and reasonable fitness to represent us all.”The team includes players aged 16 to 50.

Top neighbours foundNelson’s best neighbours have been found for 2011 at the annual Good Neighbour Awards, held last Thursday night.Around 40 nominations were sent in for the awards, which recognise the best neighbours in Victory, Nelson city, Stoke and Tahunanui.Organiser Kim MacDonald says she is thrilled with the entries this year and says Nelson is lucky to have so many wonder-ful neighbours.“It’s just awesome, and the stories are re-ally, really nice. I wish I lived next to some of these people,” she says. The winners were Cherie Johansson, of Victory; Eugene and Giusippina Harder, of Tahunanui; Ted Lines, of Nelson city and joint winners Gra-ham Weir and Robyn Hollis, of Stoke. All of the winners will be profiled in Nelson Weekly over the coming weeks.

The community police officers of the four areas handed out the awards and Nelson City Council-lor Rachel Reese earlier spoke of the importance of neighbours.“This is one of my favourite days of the year, I’m stunned at the wonderful things you people do. Family are the most important and after your

family comes neighbours,” she says. The Good Neighbour Awards is organised

by Neighbourhood Support and spon-sored by Nelson Weekly.Winners were acknowledged for a range of good deeds, including putting out rub-

bish bins rain, hail or shine, hosting street parties, sharing fruit, vegetables and nuts from their garden and looking after neighbours who had recently had an operation.Hira School and the Ridgeway Action Group were also presented with special awards for be-ing “great neighbours”.For the first Good Neighbour profile see page 9.

Thieves smash wall, take off with $11K of golf gearSharpies Golf was the victim of a dar-ing robbery last Friday night, with more than $11,000 worth of equipment sto-len.Owner Craig Vercoe says he was shocked to find a hole smashed through an internal wall and into his shop on Saturday. The thieves took clubs, gloves and golf bags in the raid. Police finger-printed the premises.Craig says he was angry about the inci-dent. “We work bloody hard and when you own your business it’s your pride and joy and when some little maggot comes in and takes what you worked hard for it pisses you off.”Craig says he was insured.

City2Surf walks up an appetite for charity

Lisa (LJ) Utton and John van Gosliga bring up the

rear of the City2Surf walk from Nelson to Tahu-

nanui Beach and back. Photo: Sarah Delaney.

Being new to town Lisa (LJ) Utton had heard or-ganising outdoor activities during winter could be frought with danger, any hint of bad weather and don’t expect much of a crowd. But the sun gods were shining on her good deed, providing a spectacular day for the City2Surf funwalk for Nelson Hospice.More than 100 people turned up in wigs, colour-ful outfits and walking gear for the fundraiser. It started at the Vic Brew Bar on Trafalgar St and made its way to the Beach Cafe at Tahunanui Beach, and back.LJ, who works at Aboki, says she is rapt with the turn out and interest from Nelsonians. “I organ-

ised this because I wanted to build a stronger link with my community and at the same time do something for the Hospice. I was delighted with how it went, everyone had a really good time.”The walk raised around $500 for the charity and LJ says she is considering running it again next year. “It’s a great cause and this year’s response was great so I think the interest is there to carry this on.”Nelson Regional Hospice Trust project manger Hamish Kennedy says the money will be put to great use. “It was great for LJ to come to use with this idea. We like to be able to offer different events for the public to get behind and support.”

A sporty new coupe from Hyun-dai will change the game this year, when Veloster hooks up with the wired generation. Among its revolutionary design features are one door on the driver’s side but two doors on the opposite side, allowing easy rear seat access and safety for unloading on kerb and not road side. It introduces a new 1.6-litre Gamma engine giv-ing a staggering 5.9 l/100km, driven through the front wheels. And Veloster bristles with hi-tech wizardry. “Hyundai designers wanted to create an eco-vehicle loaded with technology that also gives people the connectivity they have every-where else these days,” explains Tom Rudden-klau, COO at Hyundai New Zealand. “The designers asked some cut-through ques-tions: Why can’t a sporty coupe get 5.9 l/100km? Why can’t a car have the same connectivity as portable electronic devices? Why does coupe de-sign dictate only two doors? Why can’t an afford-able coupe offer premium features? Why can’t Hyundai have a playful front-wheel drive model? “The designers succeeded brilliantly, with 21st-century answers,” said Mr Ruddenklau. Veloster’s all-new 1.6-litre GDI Gamma engine

paired with proprietary Hyundai six-speed manual transmission and Hyundai’s first dual-clutch transmission delivers outstand-ing highway fuel efficiency fig-ures. Inspired by today’s high-powered sports motorcycles, the coupe design provides the functional-ity of a hatch. Glass spills into the hood and wraps around the

cowl, covering the A pillars, like the face shield of a motorcycle helmet. Beneath the glass are struc-tural trusses with the glass panels applied like a shield. The truss frame structure going up the pil-lars helps increase greater visibility. Possibly it’ll be that third door setup for which Veloster is best recognised, combining the style of a coupe and the functionality of a hatchback. “And with an interior size the best in its class, advanced safety technologies as standard, and sport-tuned electric power steering plus a sus-pension setup that’s world-class, Veloster is the coupe we are all waiting for,” said Mr Rudden-klau. It’s just been unveiled in the USA and we are looking forward to having Veloster on sale in New Zealand before then end of this year.”

Hyundai unveils Veloster, the hi-tech sports coupe

A radical three-door sporty coupe, Hyundai’s new Veloster will be in New Zea-land late this year.

TUESDAY 23 August 2011

A year ago last Friday Joseph Cot-ton, 13, was hanging on by a thread. He had been hit by a four-wheel drive vehicle after getting off the school bus in Atawhai and was flown to Wellington Hospital where he had half of his skull removed so his swelling brain was not crushed. It was days before doctors could tell his parents that he was going to live and another few weeks before they could say that he would live without a brain injury.Nelson Weekly spoke with Jo-seph when he was still missing half of his skull, he said at the time all he wanted to do was get back to school and back on the football field.Exactly one year to the day of his accident Joseph was hold-ing the central defence for Nel-son Intermediate in the final of the Winter Tournament for intermediate schools, at Saxton Field. His parents watched on with unmistakable pride, a far con-trast to a year before when grief was the overriding emotion. “It was very exciting for all of us, for him to be out there repre-senting his school and doing headers, which I still cringe at every time, was great,” says mum Jo.Joseph plays for FC Nelson Stars, a junior side. But it was representing his school that was a highlight for Joseph. He says the significance was not lost on him. “I thought about and after the game on the way home I sort of thought about it more.”Jo says his head has recovered fully with no ill-effects.“It’s quite remarkable really and it certainly hasn’t stunted his growth.”

While Joseph is back to his usual self he is still waiting for one more surgery to correct his shoulder that was broken in the crash.Joseph says playing in the tourna-ment was a big deal for him, despite losing the final on penalties to Nel-son College Prep.He made up for it the following day though, when his FC Nelson Stars beat a Richmond club team 5-0 and Joseph was awarded the player-of-the-day.

PM’s flying visit thrills National fans

National Party loyalist Jill Truman, of Nelson, gets up close to Prime Minister John Key at the Tahunanui play-ing fields on Sunday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Sunday wasn’t the first time Jill Truman had met John Key, not even the first prime minister she had met, but the thrill of meeting the country’s leader at the Tahunanui Domain was obvious.“It’s just a wonderful thrill. It’s all that I could have ever wanted, to be that close to John Key,” she beamed.John Key was in Nelson on Sunday to help launch local Member of Parlia-ment Nick Smith’s re-election cam-paign. He was the main event at the picnic to encourage people to “Pick-Nick”.Jill was one of the National Party faith-ful that turned up to support the prime minister and her local MP on the day. “I’ve been a supporter of the National party for over 50 years and I’m presi-dent of the National Party’s luncheon club. I think today has been a wonder-ful success. It’s been such a good day with a fabulous turn out.”The prime minister spoke for roughly 20 minutes about the Christchurch earthquake, Nick’s contribution to the National Party, Rugby World Cup and then spent time mingling with the sev-eral hundred people that turned out.

NEWS IN BRIEF• Riverside Pool is the one of the best fitness facilities in the country after it picked up the award for best site under 200m2 at the annual CLM awards last week. The awards, held at the Monaco Resort, judged the centre the best from the 34 facilities and 15 fitness centres around the North Island and top of the South Island. The centre’s reception and aqua aerobics coordinator Jo Perrott was also awarded staff member of the year.

• Some important businesses, institutions, community groups and people in Nelson are gearing up for the Nelson SPCA’s third annual Cupcake Day on Monday, August 29. SPCA Cupcake Day is based on the idea of an old fashioned bake sale, where SPCA supporters around the country are encour-aged to bake cupcakes and sell them to friends, family and colleagues and send the donations to the SPCA. For a full listing of where the cupcakes will be available on the day visit www.nelsonspca.org.nz.

• Three new brands have been announced by the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust, which newly elected chair David Bonnett says will greatly enhance promotional op-portunities for the region’s cycle tourism. There are two distinct trail names: Tasman’s Great Taste Trail and the Dun Mountain Trail. The development group favoured the Heart Of Biking (Nelson Tasman New Zea-land) as an overall brand. They believe it offers emotive as well as ra-tional benefits linked with a strong sense of place and identity.

Welcome sign gets final makeoverNelson’s welcome sign received yet another makeover on Saturday – its final one, says the mystery artist behind the redesign. The sign, on State Highway 6 near Atawhai, was first changed last month with zombie pirates on it, it was then refreshed later that month with the new slogan ‘Nelson: Live the Day, for to-morrow we die...’ featuring two eldery people. The sign got a much more cheerful upgrade this week though with the new slogan ‘Nelson: Live the Day, stay and play’.The sign also features the words ‘Vibrant Sea-side City’ and the two characters are named ‘Aldo’ and ‘Ali’, the names of the city’s mayor and deputy mayor. The artist says the decision to redesign the sign before the Rugby World Cup was made several

months ago and after approaching Nelson City Council with the idea. NCC said they weren’t sure who owned the sign and it would take some time to find out. So “Ro and his mates”, decided they would dispense a bit of charity and do the sign for free.In an email to Nelson Weekly, ‘Ro Guish’ says coming up with a slogan became a bit of fun. “It became a bit of a community competition, calling for people to send in their slogan ideas, a slogan which best represents the Nelson way of life. “With over 40 slogans submitted by locals, the stand out slogan was simply - ‘Nelson, live the day - ‘stay and play’. Lighthearted and friendly, hopefully giving the morale of the visitor a pos-itive boost. Nelson is a fun place!”Nelson: live the day, with its latest update on Saturday morning.

Rugby World Cup 2011 and the Major Events Management Act (MEMA)

Nelson City Council and the organisers of Rugby World Cup 2011 (RWC 2011) want everyone to be aware of the special restrictions that will apply when matches come to town.Retailers and other businesses are being encouraged to dress up their premises as part of the celebrations, but people are also being made aware of protections put in place to guard against attempts to make commercial gain from the tournament through unauthorised association or intrusion.

Those protections are primarily provided through the Major Events Management Act (MEMA), as well as council bylaws and district plans.

• The MEMA places restrictions on advertising, street trading, and some other activities, in the areas around Trafalgar Park (known as ‘clean zones’), and along the main thoroughfares leading to it (known as ‘clean transport routes’) on each match day and the day before.

• If you run an existing business, there will be no impact on your ability to continue honest ‘business as usual’ activities, such as continuing to use your usual signage and advertising.

• Locals need to know they can be held liable for allowing any unauthorised advertising or other commercial activities on their property.

• MEMA prohibits any advertising, anywhere, that suggests an

association with RWC 2011 where there is none, especially where protected emblems and words (or those deceptively similar), are used. An association is not avoided by using words such as ‘unoffi cial’ or ‘unauthorised’.

• The Council will be enforcing its Bylaws and other regulations within the Clean Zone and Enforcement Precinct as well as elsewhere in the city to ensure there is no unauthorised advertising (including leafl ets) and promotional or sales activities such as street trading or giveaways.

• Don’t assume that an activity is ‘safe’ simply because it is taking place outside the clean zone.

Ahoy matey, Nayland show is just getting started

Parents, teachers and supporters of Nayland Primary School are set to do it again. And this year their show includes a cast of a pregnant nun, a gimp, a pirate and a wench.Nayland Primary School parents have been rehearsing all year for Sync or Swim – a fundraising cabaret-style show which prom-ises a boat-load of laughs and fun. The show is the third in as many years and brings together a cast of parents and teachers, most of which have never starred in any form of theatre. This years show, set on a boat, starts this Saturday with further shows on Friday September 2 and Saturday September 3, how-ever the final show has already sold out.Organiser Peta-Lee Buckley says the show will be a blast. “For a lot of the people in the show they will be getting pushed way out of their comfort zone but it’s very light hearted and lots of fun.”Money raised from the show will be going towards an indoor mul-ti-purpose centre that the school has been fundraising for for sev-eral years. “The kids have their assembly outside at the moment so this new centre is much-needed.”For tickets or to find out more about the show, give the school a call on 547 7399.

• Five container vessels and one general carrier vessel, a log ship, a ship to carry the kiwi fruit for export, the tanker Ka-kariki with her valuable fuel supplies, and the big car carrier were all in port over the past week. The New Zealand Navy ship HMNZS Taupo visited for two days rest and re-supply, and fifteen large fishing vessel movements around the port improved the activity level of the port.• It was also an interesting week for the Harbour Master staff as we resume our presence on the water. I was asked to at-tend a Search and Rescue co-ordination conference in Auckland where I was pleased to learn the police, coastguard, and surf rescue all cooperate well to per-form effectively and efficiently in this area. We are fortunate to have some very professional people involved in SAR in this region.• On Thursday I was advised a small yacht, the Carbine, had dragged its an-chors and had become a hazard to other vessels. The Harbour Master vessel was used to escort the yacht to a mooring near Haulashore. Efforts are being made to contact the owner. Should you know his whereabouts please advise this office through the Council. If in doubt- don’t go out

Top neighbour finds what goes around comes aroundKarma. It’s a word Wood resident Ted Lines should certainly believe in. Ted’s neighbours – grateful for the work he does in the neighbourhood and the countless times he has called on them and helped – nominated him to be Nelson city’s Good Neighbour of the Year. He went on to win the award, but not before suffering a heart attack at his home. With his wife out it was his neighbour Jude and a friend who came to his aid, seeing he was in some discomfort outside his home. They helped him to the doctors and by getting onto it quickly, it has meant a speedy re-covery for Ted. It’s that sort of good neighbourly help that makes Majestic Way in the Wood live up to its name says Ted.“It’s a great neighbourhood, I keep an eye out for them all, but you just try and do what you can, help out when you can. I wonder around and make sure they are all ok.”Ted says he was “embarrassed” to be nominated and go up to accept the award, but admits getting the letter to tell him he was a finalist, while he was at home recovering from his attack, was nice. “They were all very crafty,

even my wife knew and she didn’t say anything so they were all very crafty,” he jokes.Ted’s neighbours say his efforts are “tireless”. “He will put out and bring in rubbish bins rain, hail or shine, main-tains gardens on the street, including digging up and replanting one neigh-bour’s garden when she was recover-ing from an operation. He does us all proud,” said the neighbours on the nomination form for this year’s Good

Neighbour Awards, which were held last Thursday night.Ted is also the cul de sac securi-ty guard, keeping an eye on any-one that comes in that he doesn’t

know. He says being a good neighbour was something he learned as a child. “I grew up in a little village in England during the war and when all the blokes went away Mum made us go around to all the ladies and do all their chores, we used to do shopping for them. That’s the way we were brought up and it’s been like that since.” With the award in his hands he says he was “chuffed” to have it.“We all get on and all look out for each other and that’s what it’s about, that’s what makes it a great place to live.”Another Good Neighbour story will run in Nelson Weekly’s next issue.

Nelson knitters help keep Moldova warm

The Tasman region might have some of the best trout fishing spots around, but don’t ask Nelson Trout Fishing Club president Ray Day where they are. While the Motueka River is a haven for trout fishing, a lot of the 60-odd members have their own “secret” spots where they say they catch the biggest fish. But with the season ready to begin at the start of October, Ray is hoping to net more members. To join the club, phone secretary Bruce McLean on 548 0066. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Elaine Borger and Elisabeth VandenBerg with some of the blankets Nelsonians have knitted for children in Moldova. The blankets were counted and sent last week. Photo: Andrew Board.

Nelson knitters have put their talents to good use, knitting 290 blankets to be sent to children in chilly Moldova, in Eastern Eu-rope.The annual ‘Operation Cover Up’ gets knitters all over New Zealand making blankets, hats, scarves, jer-seys, mittens and slippers to send to Moldova, one of Europe’s poorest coun-tries. Nelson organiser Elaine Borger says blankets have been coming in from all over Nelson and this years tally is similar to last years. “It’s great to see them all out like this and to see that we are able to use our knit-ting for good.”The programme is run by Mission without Borders, an interdenominational organisation.Operation Cover Up was started in 2000 by Taupo woman Liz Clark, she heard that children are of-ten very cold in Moldova, with minus 20 degree tem-peratures in the winter. She rallied around Taupo to get people to knit peggy square blankets for the children. The idea explod-ed and last year 10,000 blankets were sent to Mol-dova from New Zealand.

Throw out the lemon drinks and the tissues – it’s time for some winter laughter as Top of the South Arts Touring brings Improv the Musical to Nelson. New Zealand’s top professional improv come-dians, The Improvisors from Wellington’s Circa Theatre are in town for a full length fully im-provised musical at the Nelson School of Music

on August 25. Top of the South Arts Touring spokesperson Janice Marthen says audiences can expect a great night out full of inspired im-prov, interaction and music, served up with a side of topical satire.Improv the Musical is on at the Nelson School of Music on Thursday August 25 at 7.30pm. Tickets are $20 and $25. Bookings: 548 9477.

If you have your drivers licence, there’s a likely chance that it was thanks to Kevin Bannan. The driving instructor has been in the business for more than 20 years, ending up on the top of traffic islands, round a-bouts and his foot planted firmly on his dual control brake. While he may have had his fair share of bumpy rides, it’s all worth it, says Kevin, who enjoys the satisfaction of watching learner drivers turn into experienced and safe drivers. “It’s very reward-ing. Getting your drivers licence can change your life,” he says. “Everyone’s got to do it when they feel they’re ready. A lot of young people are keen to do it and it certainly makes life a lot easier if you can drive.”The drivers licence test is changing in February

next year from 15 minutes to 45 minutes, cov-ering more ground and situations, something Kevin says should have happened a long time ago. “The current test is way too simple, it doesn’t cover enough. It might have been good 20 years ago but the situations have changed, especially in Nelson, it’s growing, the traffic and intersections have changed.”Kevin says 15 hours of driving is the usual time it takes to get a novice driver up to the stage where he, or she, can drive, but the new test will reflect 120 hours of driving. Kevin’s tuition covers eve-rything from driving lessons to defensive driv-ing courses. “It’s like a different job every hour, you have a different person on a different stage of driving, it’s an interesting job.”

John & Julie Crone have returned to Nelson after 15 years in Wellington to establish Nelson Personal Financial Planning. They believe that there has never been more need to manage investments closely and to plan for retirement than now. Prospects of an ageing population putting pressure on superannuation, introduction of capital gains tax and potential means testing of entitlements are just some of the impacts likely to hit New Zealanders in coming years. At the same time savings are being eroded by interest rates lower than inflation, or even worse, have been lost in finance company deposits. John says “we aim to work closely with investors to help understand the risks involved. If a potential investment can’t be explained in simple, understandable terms it should be avoided. ” In recent times John was General Manager for listed property entity The National Property Trust and has worked as a fund manager since 1996. He completed the Graduate Diploma in Business Studies (Personal Financial Planning) in 2009, recognising then that more regulation of financial advisers was likely. John has also completed B.A. and B.Com degrees at Canterbury University majoring in Economics, Accounting and Operations Research. He is a registered financial adviser.

The Stoke Library is the hub of Stoke and last week it under-went a $130,000 makeover, thanks to its owners Nelson City Council. The re-opening for the revamped library was held at a special opening ceremony yesterday.

The new look includes re-freshing décor and a new comfortable seating area. Ideas for the upgrade have mainly come from Stoke li-

brary users, says NCC libraries manager Ian Littleworth. There is now a sepa-rate area for comput-ers use, a more flex-ible children’s area, and other zones in the library have been enhanced. The circulation and returns areas have also been rebuilt to create a better work flow. The library was closed last week to allow work to be done.Ian says the building was looking tired and dated. “Things have been changed around and are better suited to the way people are now using the library. The customer and staff areas on the inside have a new look and feel, there has been a rearrangement of the seating which is also more comfortable,” he says.

The library had not been revamped since it was first built about 15 years ago. Books in the childrens area are now housed on shelves so they can be wheeled out of the way to create more room for school classesThe library has been refurbished for the public, so get along and check it out.

Proud to be a part of the Stoke Library upgrade. Enjoy your new

reception counter!

The goal at moistureMASTER is simple – to design, manufacture and install the best home ventilation system possible. The importance of good home ventilation should not be underestimated. The quality of our air is continuously under threat from fumes, dust, pollens, excessive moisture, mould and other pollutants. Exposure to poor quality air can result in long term health issues. It makes sense that the air we bring into our homes should be filtered, fresh and drier – moistureMASTER air. moistureMASTER offers many unique features and benefits including a five year warranty. You’ll enjoy and appreciate the differences – they are significant. The percentage of moisture in the air is considerably higher

inside your home than outside. This moisture is produced from cooking, breathing, washing and showering and is absorbed into your soft furnishings and walls. During the heat of the day the moisture is evaporated into the air but when the house cools it often forms as condensation on colder surfaces like windows. This is a daily cycle and whilst this cannot be stopped it is able to be controlled by replacing the moist air with drier air – a moistureMASTER forced air ventilation system will remove the excess moisture from your home replacing the air with drier, filtered fresh air. The air in your home will be fresher and healthier, even if you have your windows closed. For more information call 0800 TO VENT.

AND NEW HOME OF

Affordable heat transferand ventilation systemsOne of the most affordable ways to heat yourentire home efficiently is by installing a heattransfer system. How it works is that you havea solid-fuel source such as a wood burner in oneroom and the excess heat is pumped out andcirculated to other rooms in the house via ductsand fans in the ceiling.

It’s a great way of ensuring you use all the heatthat is generated in your home. The system’sthermostat also makes sure only excess heat isbeing transferred, keeping the source room at apleasant temperature all the time.

The systems are affordably priced and runat a very low cost, using a similar amountof electricity to a 100-watt light bulb. Heattransfer systems use an in-line fan and acousticducting so they run quietly and unobtrusively. They can be fitted in new and existing homes.

The Vent Shop sells and installs heat transfersystems, as well as positive pressure and heatrecovery ventilation systems. They offer in-home consultations and quotes, and also sellDIY kits. Give them a call and find out howaffordable it can be to make your home so muchwarmer this winter.

The Vent Shop is now the new home ofmoistureMASTER controlled ventilation systems. One system can’t fit all homes and fix all problems which iswhy the moistureMASTER is such a great solution for makingyour home warm, dry and healthier. Customised to suitindividual homes, problems and budgets, moistureMASTERis guaranteed to work efficiently.

Made in New Zealand using top-grade German componentry, moistureMASTER controlled ventilation systems have been aroundsince 1998. Guaranteed with a five year warranty, moistureMASTERsystems replace moist air in the home with drier, warm filteredair, control condensation and help eliminate mould, mildew andodours at the same time as saving money on heating, and making ahealthier environment for allergy and asthma sufferers.

moistureMASTER is anaffordable market leaderincorporating the latestin European ventilationtechnology and modulardesign, and offeringnumerous ‘add ons’ thatare unique to its system. These include heattransfer kits, summerventilation kits, heaters,Pure Air modules, multiple fan systems andnumerous other configurations to be added at any stage. Cobras tame Tigers in rugby league final

IN BRIEFVOLUNTEERS: Nominations for the SPARC volunteer awards close midnight today. This year you can nominate not just coaches, but also administrators, officials, referees, fund-raisers or anyone that is a volunteer in sport (including through clubs, schools or events). Visit www.sparc.org.nz/volunteers to make your nominations.

FOOTBALL: AMI Nelson Suburbs were al-ways destined for second place in the final round of the Robbie’s Premier League, but went close to beating eventual winners Fer-rymead Bays, a hat-trick to Wiremu Piercey handing the visitors a late victory. Gagame Feni scored a brace, giving Nayland Col-lege more enjoyment than anything. The star striker was a late return from injury and is currently leading the school boys at the na-tional championship in Napier this week..

AWARDS: The date has been changed for the 2011 Sportsperson of the year awards, now being held - Wednesday December 7 at the Hope Community Church. Nominations will open in August.

JUNIOR RUGBY: The Mike 7’s junior rugby tournament is being held this Saturday at Greenmedows. More than 500 junior players aged 6 - 10 years will be participating at the annual seven-a-side tournament hosted by the Stoke Rugby Club. More than 40 teams from Nelson, Marlborough, Buller and Gold-en Bay will be there.

The Stoke Cobras have finished a per-fect season, capping it off with the sweet taste of glory in the final of the Bin Inn Cup.It was a commanding performance from the minor premieres, taking the game 54-24 at the home of Tasman Rugby League, the Tahunanui Playing Fields, on Saturday.A dominant second half performance lead the way for the Cobras, after find-ing themselves tied up 20-20 early in the latter 40, and behind on the scoreboard

prior to that when outstanding Tahu-nanui Tigers playmaker Eliot Smith dotted down for the game’s first try.But it was Stoke’s ever-impressive Philip Asi that was to be the real hero on the day, scoring a hat-trick as the Cobras wriggled their way back in to the lead.Philip was joined on the scoresheet by Cobras’ Jamein Bristoe, James Vailanu, Freedom Walker, James Piukala and Hoani Tauwhare as they took control of the game with five tries to seal Tasman Rugby League’s holy grail.

Captain Troy Wilson says he was stoked with the win. “Tahuna really took it to us, the first half especially, they were awesome so we really had to work hard. We have some big boys on our team and towards the end they were able to find some holes and we ran away with it in the end there.”A number of Stoke Cobras have been selected for the Tasman Titans squad in their match against the West Coast Chargers this weekend. The game kicks off at 2:30pm on Saturday at Tahunanui.

TUESDAY 23 August 2011 Sport18

Twelve months after the school’s best ever performance at the New Zea-land Secondary School Basketball Championship, the Nayland College Senior A side are confident they have the depth to go one better than their semi-final appearance last year. With only one departure from the side that reached the top four for the first time in the school’s history, in 2010, co-captain Zeb Lovell says “belief ” and an all round team game could top last year’s effort as they compete against the rest of New Zealand’s best in Palmerston North this week. “I think we have the potential to do very well,” says Zeb. “We just need to play with confi-dence. If everyone believes we can do it then that’s all it will take.”The side is flooded with New Zealand age-grade players including under-18 guard Scott Cameron, who along with Zeb filled the two Nelson Gi-ants development spots, under-17 big

man Angus Riley, under-16 player Locky Campion, while a number of others have represented the country in Koru sides.Youngsters Mitchell Chandler and Toma Noguchi are members of the Nayland junior team that finished top at the South Island tournament recently.Zeb says the team’s style is differ-ent this year but it will again rely on every member of the squad. “It’s a whole team performance with us. We don’t rely on any one player. We can all score.” Fraser Boys’ High School, coached by Jeff Green, is again favourites along-side Westlake Boys’ High School, but the co-educational school from Stoke are in its best ever position to clinch basketball glory. “It’d just be absolutely amazing. To get that record last year was amazing and to beat it again would just be out-standing.”

Nelson College finished runner up at the South Island and Aoraki Secondary School Motocross Champs in Timaru over the weekend. The placing, and overall win for Nelson College for Girls student Kirsty Sil-cock in the 17 and over class, were the ma-

jor highlights of the trip says team manager Dan Shallcress. Ethan Bruce and Dominic Krishnasamy were the other stand outs from Nelson, both finishing third in the 12-16 year-old 125cc MX class and farm bike class, respectively.

Nelson College have waited a long time to be back in hockey’s top secondary school tournament and coach Jamie Brown is determined to be back again next year.Nelson has qualified for the Rankin Cup, which will see the country’s top hockey schools fight it out. Nel-son last competed at the tournament in 1996 but Jamie says a five year plan the school set has paid off. “We’ve been working towards this and while it will be a very tough tournament we are confident.”The players have been training up to four times a week and a spot in the top 12 will mean a return to the tour-nament next year. Nelson lost its first game of the tournament 4-1 to Otago Boys High School on Monday and today plays Auckland Grammer and Palmerston North Boys High School in its other pool game. “This is a great oppor-tunity for a lot of these boys,” says Jamie.

Nayland College A could be well pleased with their clash against Motue-ka High School on Saturday. Nayland have continued to build on their plat-form throughout the season and look to be peaking at the right time as they compete in the B Grade at the South Is-land Secondary School Tournament in Nelson this week. Both teams had ebbs and flows through the early part of the game, with Nayland in front 15-13 at half time. Nayland moved up a gear in the third period – they had better flow through court and all but eliminated the un-forced errors.Michaela Matenga was Nayland’s gen-eral at centre, she led her troops by ex-ample – linked through court and fed her shooters intelligently. Brianna Joyes was the preverbal “energiser bunny” at wing attack even though she was a little over zealous and was called for a num-ber of contacts.Ashleigh Parkinson made an impact on

the wing when she was introduced at half time; she gained several deflections and used her knowledge as a shooter to put in some precision feeds.Shooters Deanna Hunter and Olivia Clarke presented well and rewarded their feeders with accuracy.Nayland had a wealth of possession when they converted 39 from 48 while

Motueka was restricted to a mi-serly 25 from 28.Ashleigh Snape and Macaela Joyes shared the wing defence bib and were both quick to gath-er in the loose ball. Goal defence,

Sara Reidie continued to impress – she hunted and was rewarded with several well timed intercepts, while goal keep Abbey Pestell was an effective partner who limited Motueka’s opportunities.Nayland’s coach, Michelle Andrew was quietly pleased with her charges - they played a solid four quarters, putting into practice what they had been work-ing on and is now focussing on the South Island Tournament.

The Nelson Under 13 team had ex-tra baggage on their way home from Ashburton when they swept all before them to win the Mid Canterbury Un-der 13 Tournament.Coach, Kathryn Orange said she was thrilled with how her girls had devel-oped during the season. They played as a team unit and with maturity be-yond their years to defeat Canterbury, Mid Canterbury, North Canterbury, Marlborough, Selwyn and the top club team Hornby. Caitlin Delany and Merekara McGui-netty were a formidable defensive

duo, while captain Holly Young lead by example from wing defence and worked tirelessly through court.Poppy Restieaux displayed versatility and proved to be a pivotal link while Paige Woodhill and Megan Stack worked hard to provide quality ball to their shooters.Ariana Tekawa Wiremu and Ellie Gaging worked the offensive circle well, with Ariana finishing the tour-nament with a 78 per cent shooting average.Piki Boyles and Michaela Kerr both impressed off the bench.

Tasman Makos first-five James Marshall fights his way through the Otago defence during his sides heartbreaking 19-16 loss at Trafalgar Park on Sunday. Otago kicked a penalty in the final minute of the game to secure the win. The Makos next home game is this Thursday night when they host table-topping Manawatu at Trafalgar Park. Kick off at 7.35pm. Winter tournament a huge success for schools

More than 1000 intermediate-aged school children took to the sports fields of Saxton Field for two days of thrilling competition last week.Thirteen schools from around the region entered the annual winter tournament which featured all win-ter codes. While it’s known as the winter tour-nament, it was summery weather which greeted participants, and tournament co-ordinator Leslie Smith says that added to another top year. “It was absolutely superb,” she says. “The facilities are stunning. This is the second year we’ve had it at Sax-ton Field and everything ran like clock-work.” 1176 athletes were entered, up slightly from last year. Leslie says every school only had positive things to say about the tournament which pushes huge involvement for the region’s top young talents.“Just the opportunity it gives kids to compete against each other and because it’s held every year the kids get a chance to make contact with players from other schools away from here and they re-connect with them the following year.”

Season over for Stoke rugby as Marist wins to book spot in final

Tahuna Super Liquor Stoke Reds season came to a grinding halt over the weekend, losing its division three semi final to a fired-up Marist at Tahunanui. Marist, led by a dominant pack, scored three tries in the first twenty minutes, setting up the win.Try as they might, Stoke could only manage two un-converted tries in response, one to Toby Harvey – who’s never-say-die, uncompromising style of rugby also earned him player of the day – the second to Mark Mitchell. When the backs, ably led by skipper Wayde Sinclair, managed to cut loose with some good possession they looked good, but the odd wrong decision, knock-on and dropped ball cost them dearly with one of Marist’s second half tries coming from an intercept and, with time running out, Stoke Reds just couldn’t drag the score-line back, losing 29-10.Stoke manager Tony Smith says Marist deserved the win. “Full credit to Marist they took the game by the scruff of the neck right from the start to earn them-

selves a place in next week’s final.” Marist will play Waimea Old Boys at Jubilee Park this Saturday for the title. Tony says his troops can hold their heads high. “It was a good season with some good hard fought footy along the way, I would like to say a big thanks to Carl at Tahuna Super Liquor for his sponsorship through the season which we are very grateful for, and to the club’s major sponsor, Mal at Accessman.”

Tickets still avaliable for Stoke Rugby Club prizegivingThe Stoke Rugby Club is set to cel-ebrate its season in style this Satur-day night and it is inviting all players, coaches, managers, supporters and sponsors to come along and enjoy the fun.

We are expanding! Nelson and Waimea Weekly newspapers are rapidly growing and we need another reporter to help us cover our wonderful region. Here is what we are after: Someone who is above all else passionate, is not afraid to learn and someone who wants to be telling the stories of our region. You do not need to be qualified, but do need an exceptional attitude and have very good interpersonal skills. The job: Our new reporter will work between

20-30 hours a week and this can be a mixture of working from home and our offices in Nelson and Richmond. Your hours will need to be flexible and you will report to the paper’s editor. You will be expected to cover a

wide range of stories and take photographs as well; we will provide training if needed. About us: Nelson and Waimea Weekly’s are the only locally owned newspapers in the region. We distribute to 30,000 homes

in Nelson and Tasman. We provide a politically incorrect working environment, filled with hard working people who have heaps of fun. If this is the job you’ve been waiting for, email us right away at [email protected].
