Introduction

The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA),o cial host sailing venue or the 2012 Olympic and ParalympicGames was developed to take advantage o what are recognisedas some o the best small boat sailing waters on the planet. Thevenue provided training acilities or the 2008 Games medalwinning heroes, helping an overall medal haul o 4 golds, 1 silverand 1 bronze. WPNSA is the rst 2012 venue to be completed,over 3 years ahead o schedule and in budget with an active

sustainable legacy programme.

The combination o clean winds, sheltered waters andweak tides in the area is unique and this new WorldClass acility set in the centre o the Jurassic Coast, theonly Natural World Heritage Site on the UK mainland,provides an unrivalled venue or training and sailingcompetitions and is committed to protecting the local

environment, winning the 2008 Sport Industry Awardor Environmental Concern in Sport.

The Academy was developed through a strongpartnership with the South West RegionalDevelopment Agency, Sport England Lottery Fundand the local authorities, working together to bringa strong vision into an exciting reality. The Academy

is a not or pro t company and has a managementagreement with Sail-Force Ltd. Further marineworks, unded by the Olympic Delivery Authority,have enhanced the venue and it now ul lsInternational Olympic Committee requirements.Development o the Academy has providedinternationally recognised rst class acilitiesincluding; 220 metres o slipway accessible at all

states o wind and tide and 140 protected marinaberths or ribs and yachts.

Membership The Sailing Academy welcomes new members. Membership

is open to anyone who wishes to use the extensive acilitieson a regular basis and wish to store equipment on sitepermanently. As a member you are still liable to pay harbourdues to help maintain the upkeep o the harbour.

Temporary day membership is also available to all whowish to use WPNSAs acilities. The ee covers launching,parking and use o the changing and social acilities,with overnight storage available i required.

Day membership can be purchased or up to amaximum o 2 weeks per annum without joiningWPNSA. Please note, day membership does notinclude harbour dues, this is a small ee thatPortland Port charge to all those using theharbour.

I you wish to stay overnight, we do have ourown accommodation and take camper vans onsite, although we cannot extend this to tents.

Sailing Events andTraining

2008 was another active and success ul year or sailing eventsat WPNSA. International events included; the Moth WorldChampionships attracting entrants rom as ar as Australia,Sail or Gold allowing competitors to race on the 2012 watersand the Tempest World Championships. The RYA UK MatchRacing Championships were held at WPNSA, as were theBritish University Championships and Speed Week. WPNSAprovided the press con erence venue or the Qingdaomedallists homecoming a ter their record medal haul.

2009 is proving another exciting year or WPNSAwith the World Championships or the RSX Olympicwindsur ng class, Farr 45 yacht event, Techno WorldChampionships, Feva and Fireball UK NationalChampionships, Sail or Gold Olympic rankingevent and locally the South West Championships.From 2010, the Academy will begin gearing up orthe 2012 Olympics, with international test eventsbooked in or short periods in the summer o 2010 and 2011.

The Sailing Academy is a very popular baseor training and coaching at all levels. Fully

equipped lecture rooms, sa ety Ribs and marksare available or hire, supported by excellentcatering acilities. The British Olympic Sailing Team regularly train at WPNSA, and many havebecome members intending to make it the base

Learning to Windsurf

THE WINDSURF SCHOOL

Our windsur ng school operates in the shallow waters o PortlandHarbour - one o the most popular windsur ng destinations inthe UK. RYA recognition means we pass standards set by theRoyal Yachting Association and teach a course structure set bythem. All our instructors have been trained to RYA standards.Courses take place every day o the week rom April toOctober. Start times are generally 10.00am and 2.00pm,although we reserve the right to cancel lessons whenthere is un avorable weather or tide. We provide ree, allthe equipment needed to take part, you just need tobring a pair o shoes you dont mind getting wet anda towel.

WINDSURFING LESSONS

TASTER - 1 DAY

An excellent introduction into the sport. This is notan RYA course, but is a great way to introduce youto windsur ng in a sa e environment. Childrencan be taught (depending on size!) Starting at10am till 5pm with an hour lunch break RYA START - 2 DAYS

Designed to kick start your windsur ng career,this course will get you to a standard thatallows you to sail on your own. It covers all thepractical and theoretical elements in a series o water based sessions. At the end o the courseyou will receive an RYA certi cate allowing youto rent kit rom centres worldwide, or be in theposition to buy your own. Starting at 10am till

our gold medalists trained prior to Beijing thissummer. Legend Ben Ainslie, golden girl SarahDempsey, new sailing star Paul Goodisonand the gold medalist Iain Percy all train atthe Weymouth and Portland National SailingAcademy and understand the importance o inspiring new generations into the sport o sailing.
