From the Principal We’ve had a very busy start to the term, with reports going home in the first week, and in week two
Parent/Teacher night. On the first day of term staff participated in professional learning workshops
facilitated by our staff, focused on using technology; particularly our #codelikeagirl project, Clickview
and Matman (attendance on a mobile device), as well as various topics ranging from Mindfulness,
Learning Plans, using SSS and Edi, our Extend, Engage, Enrich – Middle School project, Differentiation,
using Office 365, google docs, and other technology applications, Positive behaviour support and
student engagement. This term the Leadership Team are involved in supporting improved practice in
all collaborative teams and professional learning for staff is focused on observation of teacher practice
and receiving feedback from colleagues. The Leadership Team will also focus on specific projects to
address the goals in our School Plan. Next week two teachers will attend an accreditation workshop
for White Ribbon which is part of our implementation of the Respectful Relationships priority area.
We have started the term with some amazing achievements. Art students have work on show at the
Young Archies Exhibition at the UTAS School of Art and we are thrilled that Ogilvie students have
won both the 7/8 and 9/10 sections of this prestigious competition. Our combined OHS/NTHS band
has been on tour to Victoria and have won a platinum award. The RoboCup team won their category
at the Hobart Regionals and are competing at the State Finals in Launceston. These, and many other
achievements, are acknowledged in this Newsletter and I’m sure you’ll enjoy reading about these
successes. If you can’t make it to see the Young Archies exhibition, there is a virtual tour here: https://

XlozieEUVUwD2F8MrLRybtSnM1THYXyv4!2e10!3e12!7i5376!8i2688?hl=en-AU Last Monday we welcomed students and staff from our sister school Kawanishi Meiho Senior High
School, to Ogilvie for a week’s visit. Our schools; Ogilvie, New Town, Meiho, have been sister schools
since 2010. This was the school’s fourth visit to Tasmania and Ogilvie teachers and students have
visited them twice. Some of the Meiho students hosted our students during our trip to Japan in April,
and some of the Ogilvie students who hosted Meiho students participated in the Japan trip, and were
hosted by Meiho students and their families. There is a strong relationship between our schools and I
thank members of our school community for showing such strong support for our exchange program.
Various opportunities are provided this term alongside the teaching and learning program, including
Year 8s participating in Figure 8 – a self-esteem program run by our School Chaplains over this term.
Coming up this term Year 10s will have their preliminary enrolments completed at Elizabeth College,
Year10 School Leaders have a visit to Parliament House for the Alliance of Girls Schools, hosted by
Elise Archer, and we look forward to meeting our incoming 2018 Gr 7 students at the Parent Evening
later in August. Staff and students will soon be visiting our feeder primary schools as part of our
transition program. Our primary students are encouraged to participate in our writing competition to
have their work published in Threads later in the year.

Ogilvie and New Town High School
Band Tour On 2 August, the Ogilvie/New Town concert
band, comprised of around 50 students, played in
the Victorian school’s music festival. We won the
platinum award in the advanced section, the
highest section of the competition. This a huge
achievement for all involved. The players and
teachers are to be commended and congratulated
for their hard work. The Band attended the
Festival in 2015 where it was awarded Silver and
then again in 2016 awarded with Gold. In both of
these years the Band entered the Intermediate
Section.
Some others notable activities we participated in
during the tour included holding a workshop with
students at St. Kevin’s college, visiting the Percy
Grainger museum (now affectionately known as “that dude” museum) and participating in a stage band masterclass with the renowned
trombone player Daryl McKenzie at A.I.M music.
This was an entertaining and rewarding tour for all, with many memories and new friendships made. A massive thank-you is owed to all
the hardworking, dedicated staff that made this tour possible and so enjoyable.

Young Archie Awards 2017
The awards are based on the long running Archibald Prize held each
year in Sydney. The Young Archie Awards provide the opportunity for
the talent, originality and joy of student work to be shared with a
wider audience. We are proud to announce the following prizes
awarded to Ogilvie students:
Grade 7/8 Category awarded to Amelia from 7D and Grade 9/10
Category awarded to Nahhar from 9D.
The following students had work selected for the exhibition:
Zoe 8B, Abbie 8D, Jaime 8E, Marla 9D, Jacqueline 10B, Bridie 10A, and
Mikaylah 10D.
The exhibition will run for two weeks from 6 August to 20 August at
the Tasmanian College of the Arts, UTAS at 1 Hunter St, Hobart.
Do fairy tale princesses make good role models?
In Year 7 English all of the students complete a narrative unit where they explore the portrayal of fairy tale princesses in traditional and
more modern tales. Their culminating project is to fracture an existing traditional fairy tale, where they then present ‘their princess’ in
a different light to the original tale. The students are tasked with the challenge of:
Retelling the traditional tale with their new character’s perspective or from the
perspective of another character;
Including fairy tale elements in different, unique or unexpected ways;
Using a clear narrative text structure/ organisation;
Presenting their fairy tale creatively.
Students in Ms Boas’ 7D English class took up the challenge and have created some fun and
original narratives. The creative presentations include: choose-your-own-ending narratives,
story books, mobile displays, classified case files and narratives completely told in verse. The
stories are currently being displayed in their home room.

Schools Tree Day - Friday 28 July
Thanks to Greens Alderman Helen Burnet from the Hobart City
Council for joining the Eco Schools team to celebrate Schools
Tree Day, re-establishing missing trees from the mature Avenue
of trees that lines the driveway.
Over recent years some of the trees have been lost. The trees
planted on Tree Day have helped to restore the Avenue,
maintaining the school’s park-like grounds as a significant
community landmark for years to come.
Organised by Planet Ark, Schools Tree Day, along with National
Tree Day on Sunday 30 July, combine to make Australia’s biggest
community tree-planting event.
Students, Harshika and Bridie were interviewed for Southern
Cross News and did a great job talking our magnificent grounds.
Please remember that it is everyone’s responsibility to keep our
school, both buildings and grounds, looking good. Show that you
are meeting the Ogilvie commitment to Be Respectful towards
the environment – clean up any mess you make and don’t drop
rubbish and leave it for someone else to pick up.
Water around the world with 7B, 7D & 7F
In HASS, we are looking and learning about water purity around
the world. Last week, Mrs Ley’s grade 7 HASS classes all got to
have a taste of what it is like for South Sudanese girls to walk eight
hours a day to get water. The water conditions in their country
are very poor and every 20 seconds, a child dies from water
related diseases. We put a 4kg medicine ball on our heads and
walked 100 metres. We realised that doing this each day (twice!)
with even heavier amounts of ‘water’ must be very hard. As well as
just walking for 8 hours, they also have to carry 20kg of water on
their heads. We also did some maths and found out that based on
our averages, the South Sudanese would walk about 43km a day
just to fetch water for their families. Here in Australia, we are very
lucky.
This year we have a record 10 Ogilvie teams participating in TOM. We are also very excited that the Tasmanian State Finals are being held here at Ogilvie on Saturday 9th September. As well as the 70 students who will be competing we also have a number of old scholars who are assisting as door monitors and guides. The School Association will be holding a ‘Sweet Things’ stall and of course there are the teachers and parents who are supporting the students through the six weeks they have to prepare their
presentation. We love the sense of community around TOM at Ogilvie and the willingness of so many people to give up their Saturday is amazing. Good luck everyone!
OHS Association
The Ogilvie School Association has a busy few months coming up
this term.
We are busily in the process of organising the annual combined
Ogilvie/New Town High Quiz night on Friday 1 September. The
quiz night is one of the major fundraisers we have in the year, it is
a great night of friendly competition. Each table at the quiz night
nominates whether they are playing for Ogilvie or New Town
High, at the end of the night scores determine which school wins
the Quiz Night Trophy. Last year New Town High were the
Trophy winners, it would great to see the Trophy back in Ogilvie’s
hands!! So please round up a table of friends and family, to support
a great fundraiser for your daughter. Bookings can be made
through the Ogilvie or New Town school offices. Please note that
the quiz night is a licensed event, so no BYO or under 18s please.
We are still seeking prizes and donations for the Quit Night, if you
or your workplace could make a donation to the Quiz night please
contact Hilary or Fiona at- [email protected]
The other event we are preparing for this term is a stall at the
Tournament of Minds. We have been asked to provide a stall of
“Sweet Treats” on the day, such as cupcakes, muffins and biscuits
(no items with cream). If you can contribute to this stall by
providing some baked goods or help run the stall, please contact
Hilary or Fiona at- [email protected]
Later in the term we are looking forward to helping to contribute
towards Ogilvie’s 80th anniversary celebrations.

Free meningococcal W Vaccination Program for Years 10,
11 and 12
The Tasmanian Government is funding a free meningococcal W
vaccine for teenagers aged 15-19 years.
The program will commence during term three 2017 and run until
30 April 2018 and will be delivered at your school.
The vaccine provides protection against four strains of
meningococcal disease (ACWY) and is given as a single dose.
Meningococcal disease is a rare but severe bacterial infection that
can cause lifelong disability or death and can affect people at any
age.
Meningococcal bacteria are carried in the nose and throat of some
healthy people and are spread through close prolonged contact.
The bacteria are more commonly found in teenagers and young
adults. Adolescents are at increased risk of meningococcal disease
Meningococcal W has increased significantly across Australia from
2014 onwards. In Tasmania, cases more than tripled in 2016
compared with previous years. Tasmania has a higher rate of
meningococcal W disease than other states. Meningococcal W is
now the most common meningococcal strain in Tasmania.
You will receive further information and a consent form during
term three. Please complete the consent form and return to your
school.

Kawanishi Meiho Senior High School - Sister
School Visit Last week we had the pleasure of hosting 10 students and two
teachers from Kawanishi Meiho Senior High School, our sister
school in Japan. The Meiho students and their host sisters had a
wonderful time together. They went on excursions to
Bonorong Park and Richmond, where the Meiho students were
able to get up close and personal with our local wildlife, and
went crazy buying huge amounts of lollies to take back to Japan.
Everyone also learned how to make Smartie Cookies, and
explored the sights and sounds of Hobart on the last weekend
together. Without our host sisters and their families opening up
their hearts and homes to our visitors, none of this would have
been possible.
Glenorchy Fun Run participants
A number of staff and
students braved cold
windy conditions last
Sunday at Montrose for
the Glenorchy fun run.
All ran well taking up
the challenge and all
participants finished the
5km strongly.
RoboCup
On Saturday 29 July, the RoboCup Junior Regionals were held at
New Town High School. Ogilvie entered a team of eight: The
Robo Squad United Club Group Team. The team spent the last
two months programming robots to perform the Time Warp. A
lot of work went into it, with elaborate costuming, complicated
programs and even human choreography. The day turned out to
be a success, with the team placing first in the Open Dance
category. The next thing to focus on is the state competition in
August, where we will be competing in Launceston with the
same dance, against more teams. We hope to do just as well
there and would like to say a huge thank you to Dr. Bob Elliot
and to Anna Minchin for helping with the robots.
If you have concerns about the hearing or vision of your child/
ward, the School Health Nurses are available to conduct vision and
hearing screening upon request. Please contact the school office
to make arrangements for this.
