A Message from Fr. Tom Donovan:
Congratulations to our young people who are receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation this weekend. You have been made his chil-dren in baptism, receiving the Holy Spirit as counsellor and guide. In this special sacra-ment, power of the Spirit working in and through you is activated in a special way through the outpouring of the gifts of wisdom, knowledge, understanding, fortitude, rever-ence, counsel, and piety. These gifts are giv-en to help you be effective and courageous in your witness to the faith: make the most of these gifts!
As we prepare for school to resume in the next couple weeks and as the COVID crisis continues to abate, we are looking to return to “business as usual”. The first thing of note is that starting this week, we will be returning the morning Mass time to 7:30am. We will continue to webcast the daily Mass on Facebook until our ‘video producer’, Parker Brown, returns to school at QND. We will continue the Sunday Mass webcasts until the Sunday Obligation is reinstated, which will likely not be until sometime next year. After school starts on August 17, the Wednesday Mass will be at St. Dominic and there will be no Wednesday morning Mass at St. Anthony. We welcome Pat Holbrook to the parish office, joining Tawny Benz and Janet Bick as part of our ‘parish secretary’ crew. Most recently, besides taking care of her grandchildren dur-ing the last few months of the COVID crisis, she had served as the secretary in the chap-lain’s office at Blessing Hospital. Of course, we also all know her as our deacon candidate, Dennis Holbrook’s wife. Now that she’s on board and we are getting back to ‘business as usual’, the parish office will return to ‘full time’ hours on August 17th, being open Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 3:00 pm daily. We also welcome back Nancy Boone as the secretary at St. Dominic School. This is a grand homecoming for her after serving for nearly 15 years at St. Peter’s, as previously she served as secretary to St. Anthony Church and School. She starts this week as the school prepares to resume operations on August 17. Finally our DRE, Bonnie Nytes, is dropping to ‘half time’ status as she becomes more active as a newly-licensed counsellor working through Catholic Charities. She will continue to do PSR, Sacramental Prep, and school liturgies work with our young people and music at 8am Mass on Sunday. We wish her well in her new profession, which is greatly needed in our community! A final word on ‘Mass Intentions’: The last several weeks, I have used this space to chat a bit about “Mass Intentions” and the practice of having the priest remember people at Mass. As I mentioned last week, we are opening our calendar book for 2021 on Tuesday, August 11, to schedule intentions for 2021. This final installment of the series explains what happens to the offerings made when one has a Mass celebrated in memory of a loved one or another intention. Traditionally the offerings made to ‘have a Mass said’ are given to the priest who celebrates the Mass, as part of his salary. Indeed, decades ago, the virtually the entire salary of a priest would be supported by these ‘stipends’. Nowadays the parish priest does receive a salary and the Mass stipends are a supplement to that salary. A priest is only allowed to take one stipend per day and the church has many rules making sure that there is to be no appearance of “commerce” (i.e., “buying Masses”) and that these requests are handled with the utmost concern that the obligation to celebrate Mass is fulfilled in a timely and conscientious way. “Extra” sti-pends for Masses beyond the one he is allowed to keep are to go to charity or other causes spec-ified by the bishop. The priest does not receive a stipend for the weekly “Mass for the People”. It is not necessary to mention the intention by name in order to fulfill the obligation to celebrate Mass, although it is both customary and fitting to do so, often during the General Intercessions (“Lord, hear our prayer” prayers) as is the custom at St. Anthony’s. If any further questions re-main about the practice of having Masses celebrated for loved ones or about the mechanics re-questing dates, please call the parish office for more information.

A Message from Mrs. Carol Frericks—Principal
Teacher Feature - Mrs. Katie O’Neal
This past year, Mrs. Katie O’Neal served as our 4th grade teacher. Previously, Mrs. O’Neal served as the 7th grade
homeroom teacher and taught 6th, 7th and 8th grade Language Arts. As Mrs. O'Neal reflected on her first year in 4th
grade, her favorite moments were those associated with stewardship. On the first day, the entire school engaged in
a special service project aligned with our Bible verse theme, “Therefore, encourage one another and build each
other up, just as in fact you are doing” 1 Thessalonians 5:11. We all met in the gym wearing our yellow hard hats
with the sticker “I Work for God” and wrote words of encouragement on 2 X 4s for Hope that were used to build a
tiny home for a local veteran. In addition, the 4th grade class continued the partnership with 2x4s for Hope by col-
lecting and sorting plastic caps that were recycled and used for benches. The 4th grade classroom was also the
place where the crochet group made enough scarves, hats and headbands during their recess time to cover WCU's
caseload for Christmas. As she prepares for the upcoming school year, Mrs. O’Neal shared, “I am looking forward
to being superheroes in faith this year by grounding ourselves in the strength of Christ.” As an inspirational faith
leader, she is always excited about our faith formation theme stating, “With Christ, we can be superheroes and
saints in our faith!”
