* Cherries: Whenpicking cherries, opt forones with a firm textureand deep red color. Bewareof ones that are very soft ortoo dark.

* Cantaloupes: Thesemelons should give undersoft pressure from yourthumb and should have ayellowish tinge to theirrinds. Cantaloupes withthe stem attached areimmature and won’t be thetastiest.

Be sure to wash all fruit

before slicing into it, sinceany germs or bacteria onthe skin will enter the fruitwhen your knife goes intoit.

Commerce organized theevent, which took place inHyde Park. The fairattracted a total of sixmillion to see over 13,000

exhibits, including ones of a Jacquard loom, envelopemachine and votingmachine.

A World’s Fair hastaken place every yearsince, with hundreds of exhibits speaking to itsshifting purpose. From1872 to 1938, the fairserved an industrialpurpose, providing aplatform for varioustechnological advance- ments and achievements. From 1939 to 1991, the fairtook a cultural turn andfocused more on humanissues and interests like

sports. From 1992 throughthe present, the fair hasserved as a showcase forcountries to expand upontheir national brandingand increase culturalunderstanding.

Whatever the purpose, millions attend the World’sFair each year. The eventis impressive, so much sothat many of the struc- tures created specificallyfor the fair each year haveremained intact. The EiffelTower from the World’sFair in Paris in 1889continues to be as popularan attraction as theMuseum of Science andIndustry from the World’sFair in Chicago in 1893.Many remnants from theWorld’s Fairs in Seattleremain, including some of

the landscaping and one of the buildings from 1909,now a part of the Uni- versity of Washingtoncampus, and the SpaceNeedle and the U.S.pavilion from 1962. Thepavilion is now home tothe Pacific Science Center.

Some of the sites of theWorld’s Fair were convert- ed into parks afterwards, with many of the originalbuildings intact. Some of these include AudubonPark in New Orleans,Forest Park in St. Louisand Flushing MeadowsPark in Queens. The Walt

Disney company contri- buted many of the rides forthe fair in Queens in 1964and intended to keep themthere for a permanentWorld’s Fair. Their plansdid not work out, however, and they relocated many of the rides to Disneyland.

The World’s Fair isquite the event. It can be acostly endeavor, however, which may explain whysome cities choose not topursue it.

Tinted SPF 15Moisturizer   A good sunscreen is thesingle best anti-agingproduct we can use! Lastyear, I was tempted tospend $12 on a tiny tube of tinted SPF 15 moisturizer.

As I carried it around thestore, I realized I could mixit myself. I had a bottle of store brand SPF 15moisturizer ($5) and abottle of foundation ($2with coupon). I put a dab of lotion on my fingertip andcombined it with about 1/3the amount of foundation. Then I mixed it andsmoothed it on. My skinnever felt or looked better!

Off To Camp  By Tresa Erickson

Your children are nolonger babies. Theyhaven’t been so for a while, but you’ve always thoughtof them that way until thisyear. Seems like theymatured over night, andnow you’re ready to givethem a little moreindependence and send

them to camp this summer. Most children are readyfor summer camp aroundage 10. Not only can theytake care of their personalneeds, but most arespreading their wings andcan handle a little timeaway from Mom and Dad.In fact, they might even

look forward to gettingaway from home for aweek or two.

In order to select theright camp, you need toask family and friends forrecommendations. Youmight also want to contactyour local park district fora list of the camps theyoffer and conduct a searchonline. You will probablyfind a wide range of camps

available. However, not allwill meet your children’sneeds and interests.

Sit down with yourchildren and discuss yourfindings. Select somecamps together and thencontact each for furtherinformation. Together, youcan find the right camp

and you should enroll yourchildren in whatevercamps you choose as soonas possible before they fillup.

Once your children aresigned up for camp, youcan start preparing themfor what lies ahead. Makesure you post a calendarsomewhere and countdown the days to camptogether. Read through the

camp brochures togetherand check out some bookson camping adventures. If they aren’t already, getyour children excited aboutcamp by relating tales of what you did at camp as akid.

Create a packing list forcamp and help your

children gather theirthings. Encourage them totake a cherished keepsakein case they get homesickand need a reminder of home. Discuss the issue of homesickness with yourchildren and let themknow that it’s ok to misshome from time to time.

Get up early on the firstday of camp and take yourchildren to camp, if

possible. Help them getsettled into their newsurroundings, meet theircamp counselors andexplore the area together.Don’t stay too long, however. Leave as soon asyou think your childrenare ready. Keep yourfarewells short and sweet, try not to get too emotionaland encourage yourchildren to have a greattime.

Send your childrenletters while they are awayto prevent them fromgetting homesick. If theyare staying at camp formore than a few days, sendthem a care package, if permitted. Hold off on anyspecial celebrations until

your children get backfrom camp. This willensure they don’t feel likethey missed out onanything big while theywere gone.

Pick up your childrenfrom camp, if possible, andthrow them a littlewelcome home party. Helpthem make a scrapbook of their camp experiencesand encourage them tostay in touch with thefriends they made.

In all likelihood, yourchildren will enjoy theirdays away at camp andwant to do it again nextsummer. They will becomemore and moreindependent with eachpassing year and leavingthe nest may be easier forthem.

Relive The Magic In Jamestown By Tresa Erickson

Married for 20 years,Lucille Ball and Desi Arnazwere a Hollywood power- house. Not only did theyperform together in one of the most successful shows ontelevision, but they ran aproduction company thatchurned out many successful

hits. The two have been gone for some time now, buttheir legacy lives on. Perhaps one of the best places torevisit the magic they created is in Jamestown, NY, thehometown of Lucille Ball.

Lucille Desiree Ball was born in Jamestown onAugust 6, 1911, in a house at 69 Stewart Avenue. Thehouse is currently under new ownership, and oncerestored, may be opened to the public. In the meantime,

just one cruise through town reveals that America’sfavorite comedienne and her former husband have notbeen forgotten. Four murals from the I Love Lucy showhighlight the downtown area and point the way tomuseums honoring Ball and Arnaz.

Managed by the Lucy-Desi Center, the Lucy-DesiMuseum and the Desilu Playhouse are both located onThird Street in Jamestown. The museum housesawards, audio and interview clips, costumes, photos, scrapbooks and other memorabilia from the estates of both Ball and Arnaz. The playhouse focuses on thecouple’s hit show, I Love Lucy, and features costumes aswell as set recreations.

Along with the museums, Jamestown offers festivalsin honor of the comedic duo twice a year, once aroundMemorial Day and once around Ball’s birthday inAugust. Festival events vary from year to year andoften include bakeoffs, luncheons, performances,

screenings and tours. Special guests are sometimes onhand to pay tribute to the couple and provide insightinto their work.

During her lifetime, Ball returned to Jamestownmany times. She intended to come back in 1989, but fellill and passed away. Ball was laid to rest at ForestLawn in Hollywood Hills, but in 2002, her children hadher ashes and those of her mother moved to Lake ViewCemetery in Jamestown where her father and otherfamily members are buried.

Jamestown offers much for those interested in thelives of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. If you’re amongthem, give it a whirl sometime, perhaps during one of the festivals.

 Be Safe By Ronda Addy

When going to an amusement or water park,

children and adults should be aware of what it takes tostay safe. Here are some tips.

Whether you are going to spend the day at a waterpark or an amusement park, there are some rules thatremain the same. Read and follow all posted rules andregulations. If you are unsure about something, ask.Obey all height, weight and age restrictions, and followthe operator’s instructions. Don’t go on any rides if youare feeling sick. Don’t chew gum or eat while on rides.

You could choke. Leave all valuables at home. This isespecially true if you have loose-fitting rings. Wearsunscreen and pay attention to the weather. At the firstsign of bad weather, take cover. Get out of the pool or off the ride. Do not overexert yourself or take anythingthat could impair your judgment.

Water parks requireextra precautions, of course. If you don’tknow how to swim, learn. If you can’t, weara life jacket. Wear a suitthat fits you well andwater shoes. Usewaterproof sunscreenand reapply it several times a day. Find out where thelifeguards are and dive only in water deeper than ninefeet. Insist that children stay in shallow areas andsupervise them carefully. Don’t leave it to the lifeguardsto do.

Amusement parks also have their own safetyconcerns. Before a ride starts, make sure you aresecured in your seat with the provided safetyequipment and remove all loose clothing, jewelry andeyeglasses. Keep your limbs inside the ride at all timesand your head straight. Do not throw or drop itemsfrom the ride or try to get out of it before it comes to acomplete stop. Don’t let children go on rides aftereating. Give their stomachs time to settle. Ride withyounger kids, if possible, and watch older kids. Take abreak between high-speed rides; 20 minutes is usuallylong enough.

Stay alert at water and amusement parks andfollow all safety rules In place. Don’t disregard them.Doing so will not only put you at risk but others as well.

 Carousel Styles By Tresa Erickson

Fairs are full of rides for kids young andold, but perhaps one of the most appealing is thecarousel. Fitted withlavishly carved animals, carousels are geared todelight, and delight theydo. Although they havebeen around for some

time, carousels exper- ienced their heyday inthe United States from1880 to 1930. Duringthat time, about 6,000carousels were made, of which about 200 or soremain today.

No two carousels areexactly alike. Some feature horse figures, others, menagerie figures-bears, cats, giraffes, etc. Somefeature figures called jumpers that go up and down. Some feature figures called standers that are bolted tothe floor. Some feature figures called prancers that havetheir two front feet raised in their air. Some featurefigures called stargazers that have their nose pointingupward. Some feature figures carved in the CountryFair style, others, figures carved in the Coney Islandstyle, and others, figures carved in the Philadelphia

style. Country fair style figures are small and slender, making for easy removal when the carousel was takenapart and moved from town to town. Famed carvers inthis style include James Armitage, Allan Herschell andC.W. Parker.

Coney Island style figures are also slender buthighly stylized with flowing manes, lively expressionsand jeweled trappings with traces of gold and silverleaf. To play up the glitz of the figures, many of thecarousels featured mirrors. Famed carvers in this styleinclude Charles Carmel, M.C. Illions, and SolomonStein and Harry Goldstein.

Philadelphia style figures are large, strong andrealistic with lifelike poses and expressions. Famedcarvers in this style include Salvatore Cernigliano,Frank Carretta, Gustav Dentzel and Daniel Muller.

Whatever the style, carvers differed in theirapproach, churning out their own unique figures and

making for fantastic carousels. Generally, the largest, most elaborately carved figures were placed on theoutside row of the carousel, where they would be seen.Oftentimes, the romantic side of the figures facing thepublic would feature more intricate details than theother side. Of all the figures on the outside row, onewould stand out. This lead figure would contain theinitials or marks of the manufacturer somewhere in itstrappings.

Carousels were once big business, and while manyof the masterpieces of the late 19th and early 20thcenturies have been destroyed, some remain. Theycontinue to operate in various places around thecountry or have been preserved in museums ordismantled and sold to collectors.

SOS: Staying Safe Offshore By Craig W. Armstrong

Millions of Americans count boating as one of theirfavorite activities. They spend the summer on thewater, and if they live in warm climates, they mayspend the year enjoying the waves. But along with thefun, boaters must always keep safety in mind. Everyyear, people are killed in boating and boating-relatedaccidents, and in most cases, those accidents could havebeen avoided.

A significant percentage of boating accidents eachyear are caused by people being under the influence of

drugs or alcohol. Operating a boat is not any differentthan operating a car, and we all know the dangers of drunk or drugged driving. This safety precaution issimple: DON’T DRINK OR DO DRUGS AND BOAT. If your safety and the safety of others is not reasonenough not to mix alcohol and drugs with boating, remember it’s illegal. There is no difference between theroad and the water. You can be arrested for DUI(driving under the influence) and for BUI (boatingunder the influence).

The next thing toconsider is the experienceof your captain. Anyonewho operates a boatshould be experienced inmany areas. They shouldknow and follow allnavigational rules and beable recognize and reactto severe weathersituations. They shouldhave a backup on boardwho knows how to

operate the boat. They should also make sure at leastone person, if not many, know where the group is goingboating and when they are expected to return.

Life jackets or PFDs (personal flotation devices) arean important part of boating safety. It is recommendedthat everyone wear a life jacket. Children and peoplewho can’t swim should always use a life jacket. It is alsoimportant to wear a life jacket when severe weatherstrikes. There are several types of PFDs available.Choose one that you will wear.

Boating is an activity that the entire family canenjoy. To ensure you enjoy boating for a lifetime, takethe proper steps to keep everyone onboard safe.

It's time to grill outdoors.Take time to properlyprepare your grill beforeusing it. Here are some tipsthat will ensure that yourgrill is clean, safe and readyto use:

 • If you haven't used yourgrill in a while, give it agood spring cleaning. Scourthe grate with a wire brush.Save future clean-ing timeby using a non-stick cookingspray to pre-vent food fromsticking to the grill.

 • Keep safety in mind.

Place your grill in a well-ventilated, level area andaway from overhangs, deckrailings and shrubs. Uselong-handled tongs andflame-retardant mitts toprotect your hands.

 • Preheat your grill. Youcan estimate the approxi-mate temperature bycounting how many sec-onds you can hold yourhands 4 inches above thecoals. If you can hold yourhands in place for fourseconds, your grill is atmedium heat or about 300to 350 F. If you can holdyour hands in place for lessthan two seconds, you havea hot grill at about 375 F.

 • Be sure to bring a cleanplate and clean uten-sils tothe grill to collect the food.If you use the same platethat held the raw meat, youcould be adding someunwanted "secret ingred-

ients" to your meal.Salmonella, E. coli andother bacteria are unwantedguests at your party andoften are spread by crosscontamination.

 • Use a food thermo-meter every time you grill.Don't trust color as anindicator of doneness. Ac-cording to a study conduct-ed by the U.S. Departmentof Agri-culture, one out of every four burgers turnsbrown before reaching asafe internal tempera-ture.Insert the thermometer inthe thickest part of the

For safety, cook to thesesafe minimum internaltemperatures recommend- ed by the USDA: Chicken breast: 165 F Hamburgers: 160 F Steak (med. rare): 145 F; Pork: 160 F

You can reduce grillingtime by starting the cook-

ing process inside. For ex- ample, you can use amicrowave oven to thawmeat and partially cook it,as long as the food is placedon a preheated grillimmediately.

Don't reuse marinade. If you use a marinade totenderize or add flavor tofoods, reserve some of themarinade that didn't touchthe meat in a separate bowlto use as a dipping sauce.

Meat, poultry and fisharen't the only foods thatcan be grilled. Try grilledfruit or grilled vegetables, whether directly on the grillor in a foil packet.
