At EY, we’re proud to support Cristo Rey Jesuit High School. It’s one of the ways we’re helping to make our community a better place to work and live. A better and brighter future starts with all of us.

Serving communities. Changing lives. What matters to you matters to us.
Welcome to the second Rey of Hope Gala – a celebration of our most generous donors and our fearless leader, Bill Garrett. Tonight is also a celebration of the 525 students we have the honor to serve every day. These extraordinary young people make us proud as they travel the city to work in their corporate jobs, and as their remarkable achievements in the classroom. Their youth brings energy, creativity and a fresh perspective to our 132 corporate jobs partners. This year’s senior class will graduate in May, joining the 237 alumni who have gone before them, and 100% of them have been accepted into college. Our graduates attend some of the country’s most prestigious colleges, and this year we have our first student heading to an Ivy League college in the fall.
It is humbling to think of how far this school has come in just six years. It is safe to say that all that has been accomplished would not have been possible without the leadership of Bill Garrett and the support of everyone here tonight. We want to especially thank Janet & Jim Cumming, Mary & Bob Fink, and Jenny & Mike Messner, who are being honored this evening for their overwhelming generosity and for their faith in the mission of the school. Their early support was crucial to our success.
We hope you enjoy the evening celebrating all that makes Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit such a magical place and please know how much we appreciate the part YOU have played in making it so.
Dave Sewell, Board Chair Camille Naughton, Incoming President

Cristo Rey is impacting lives but needs to continue to do so for decades. Establishing an endowment is critical to making sure the school is well positioned to withstand the vagaries of the economy. Having an endowment in my name is very special. Doing it in honor of my mother (who passed away late in 2018) makes it even more extraordinary. My parents instilled in all six of their children the need to give back to the community. We are honored to do so with your support through the Bill Garrett Endowment Fund in Memory of Elizabeth D. Garrett. Thanks for your support these past six years and your continued efforts to keep Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit as the premier school in the Cristo Rey Network.
God bless.
A.M.D.G.
As I near the conclusion of my professional career, it is clear to me that the Lord was preparing me for my role as Founding President of Cristo Rey, whether through my training in fund raising, developing a strong network of corporate executives, or my service as a deacon that afforded me the opportunity to preach at more than 30 parishes in Atlanta about the school. While I am proud of the work I was able to do with United Way, UNICEF and Emory/Saint Joseph’s Hospital, I am humbled by what we have accomplished collectively at Cristo Rey. Together we are truly changing the trajectory of generations of lives in Atlanta.

Bill Garrett2020Rey of Light Recipient
Bill came to Cristo Rey Atlanta after serving as the President of the Saint Joseph’s Mercy Foundation, where he was responsible for all fundraising activities for Saint Joseph’s Hospital and Saint Joseph’s Mercy Care Services. He also served as the Chief Mission Officer for Saint Joseph’s Health System, where he was responsible for maintaining the Catholic identity of the hospital, including patient quality, pastor care, ethics and volunteerism.
Previously, Bill was with the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta, serving at various times as Vice President-Campaign, Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President for Community Impact. Prior to that, he served as National Director of Development for UNICEF in the United States.
He holds a Master of Social Work and a Master of Business Administration from Columbia University, as well as a Master of Theological Studies from Spring Hill College. Bill is an ordained deacon in the Catholic Church. Bill and his wife Susan enjoy spending time with son Sean and his wife Emily, grandsons, Ryan and John, and daughter Emily and her husband, Ed.

Jenny and Mike Messner of the Speedwell Foundation have been instrumental to the success and growth of Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit from the start. Not only did the Speedwell Foundation generously support the Building Futures Changing Lives Campaign, but it also funds four Corporate Work Study teams at Georgia Tech, and has supplied laptops and Chromebooks to every one of our students since 2014.
Mike is an Atlanta native and a graduate of St. Pius X High School. He and Jenny met at the University of Pennsylvania. He went on to receive a degree in civil engineering from Georgia Tech. He worked in the railroad industry before working in finance in Boston and New York City.
In addition to Cristo Rey Atlanta, the Speedwell Foundation supports several charter schools in Charleston and funds 30 study abroad scholarships for high school students in central Pennsylvania. The Foundation also champions efforts to restore and expand public parks and green spaces in cities across the nation.
The Gift of Hope became more than a dream for the community at Cristo Rey Atlanta when Bob & Mary Fink’s foundation stepped in to make the vision of a state-of-the-art facility a reality. Through their generous gift to the “Building Futures, Changing Lives” capital campaign, the Cristo Rey Flames finally had a home. “We saw the benefits of supporting motivated, hardworking students who are dedicated to their education,” said Bob, whose own experience as a scholarship student at a New York high school run by the Christian Brothers was transformative.
For over 40 years, Bob & Mary have been actively involved in parish life and service at St. Jude the Apostle Church in Sandy Springs. This commitment to helping others is at the heart of the mission of the foundation they established in 2017. Together with their four children and 11 grandchildren, they are changing lives through the Gift of Hope Foundation, which is committed to helping individuals and organizations deal with homelessness, addiction, mental illness and the challenge of education. Their philanthropic reach extends far beyond Cristo Rey, truly giving the gift of hope to those in need.
jenny & mike messnermary & bob finkJanet & Jim Cumming
As a student at Regiopolis College, a Jesuit high school in Kingston Ontario, Jim Cumming likely never imagined that he’d one day be instrumental in making 222 Piedmont Avenue here in Atlanta home a Jesuit high school.
Following graduation from Western University in London, Canada with an honors degree in Business Administration, Jim worked for Xerox before finding his calling in real estate development, specifically with vintage and historic buildings.
Jim moved to Atlanta in 1977 and purchased the oldest high-rise in the city – the Atlanta Flatiron Building. Over the years, Jim has helped to repurpose some of Atlanta’s most iconic properties, including the Tabernacle Music Hall, several vacant car dealerships and buildings along the Atlanta Beltline.
Jim’s success in real estate repurposing has undoubtedly made a tremendous impact on the city of Atlanta, but none greater than here at Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit High School.
Jim and his wife Janet have been married for 41 year and love spending time with their four children and three grandchildren.
Tonight’s Honorees: Men & Women For and With Others
Deacon Garrett’s belief in us was instilled in us from the beginning.
He was engaged with every student and believed in us even when we
did not believe in ourselves. We are thankful to him for pushing us to break stereotypes. We will miss him, and we hope that his journey will lead him to
continue impacting others as much as he impacted us.
