Jim rushed home afterleaving the hospital wherehis mother just endured a

non-emergency heart valvereplacement procedure, after

which, the surgeon placedMartha in the hands of theafter surgery cardiac carephysicians. This team of doc-tors did not want the new

valve to be over-stressed, sothey gave Martha medicationto slow-down her heart rate.As it turned out, they slowedit down so much and so fast

that Martha died and theycouldn’t bring her back.Martha was 77 years old.

Jim, the eldest brother of4 children, was distraught tosay the least, turning next tosorrow then to anger, Jimcalled me from the funeralhome to tell me this story, cursing and threatening to suethe doctors for killing hismother. I was Martha’s andher late husband Bob’s finan-cial advisor for over 20 yearsand adored these wonderfulpeople and they felt the sameway about me. I was horrifiedwhen Jim called me with thedevastating news that Martha,my friend, would be my clientno more. What Jim said to menext made an indelibleimpression.

Early in my career, some33 years ago, I instructed myclients to list me in their littleblack book, you know the oneI am talking about, theiraddress and phone book. Itold Martha to list me under“F” for Financial and under

“L” for life insurance andagain under “I” for income.Martha and Bob were loyaland faithful clients who fol-lowed my suggestions and rec-ommendations to the letter. Her calendar and appoint-ment book had my name andnumber in all of the places Itold her to place it, “just incase”. Now Martha was goneand the life insurance claimforms needed to be completedand filed. The lawyer wantedto charge the family thousandsof dollars to probate theestate. Stopping that, I toldJim it would be my honor andobligation to help himthrough the process with nocost whatsoever! And that isexactly what we did.

Jim explained that hismother had the ultimate trustin me for she left multiplenotes to him so that it wouldbe impossible to overlook justone. Martha left more than adozen “Little Yellow Sticky”post-it notes anywhere Jimwould look in her house for

anything important. Sheposted those “Little YellowSticky’s” all over the house. One on her night stand andone more in the night standtop drawer. There was a L.Y.S.in the bathroom and anotheron and in her strong box. Onemore was found in the carglove box too. There was aLittle Yellow Sticky on therefrigerator and one more inthe basement by Bob’s tools.Jim told me that he found 13Little Yellow Sticky’s in total.

I was warmed andenthused that Martha listenedto me and performed to per-fection. You see that each andevery L.Y.S. was really aL.O.I., Letter of Instruction, written to Jimmy, her eldestand geographically closest son.

Her L.Y.S.-L.O.I.’s all deliv-ered identically the same mes-sage.

“Jimmy – if you’re read-ing this, I must be incapacitat-ed or dead. Call MarkCharnet for help and guidanceimmediately, his number is:973-831-4424.

And that is exactly whatJim did. I was there to helphim when his head was filledwith emotion, sorrow andremorse, confused further bythe funeral obligations. Jimwas in need of a financialfriend on retainer at no costfor life, just like his motherhad, and I was there for herand Bob and now Jim the sonand Jim’s children as well.

Let me pause to ask you afew questions. Do you have afinancial friend on retainer atno cost for life? Do you have aname to put on your ownLittle Yellow Sticky-Letter ofInstruction to be there to helpyour spouse and or kids afteryou’re incapacitated or gone?Do you have ample life insur-

ance as Martha did to pay allof her taxes, obligations andfuneral related expenses andmore? Do your kids have arelationship with your finan-cial advisor or retirement andestate planning specialist?

Don’t you think it’s abouttime that you answer all ofthese questions, yes? Well, Ido and would like to be thename on your L.Y.S-L.O.I. likeso many of your neighbors. For 33 years, people have beenputting my name on theirL.Y.S.-L.O.I. after we’vedeveloped a tremendousfinancial advisor/client rela-tionship. In a study that examinedthe impact of sweet andsour candy on teeth,

researchers tested four brandsof candy that are sweet andsour: Jolly Rancher, LifeSavers, Mike and Ike, andTwizzlers.

Upon examination withmicroscopes, the researchersnoted that the teeth exposedto the sour candies had signif-icant softer enamel than the

teeth exposed to the sweetones. The largest erosion inenamel was seen with the sourJolly Ranchers.

According to theresearchers, sour candies havehigh levels of citric, fumaricand malic acids. The firstcomes from citrus fruits andjuices, and is common in anumber of real foods andcandy. Fumaric and malicacids are a bit more hidden,

used not only to make candysour but also as additives inprocessed foods.

The Minnesota DentalAssociation launched a cam-paign called “The Power ofSour on Your Teeth” toincrease awareness of this newand emerging concern.

Do you plan on mixingpleasure with businesson a trip this summer?

There’s no problem from a taxperspective as long as you fol-low a basic precept: The pri-mary purpose of the travelmust be business-related.Otherwise, you’ll forfeit valu-able tax deductions.

On the other hand, if you

stick to the tax itinerary, youcan write off most of yourtravel costs – even thoughyou’re spending part of thetime on personal pursuits. Thekey is to record significantlymore “business days” than“personal days” on the trip.

Example: John Green, aself-employed individual, fliescross-country on Monday to

make a presentation to aclient. He is in business meet-ings Tuesday throughThursday. On Friday, theclient inks the deal. Johndecides to spend the weekendplaying golf and lounging bythe pool. He flies home thefollowing Monday.

The round-trip airfarecosts John $1,500. He also

incurs $1,400 in lodging($200 a day) and $800 inmeals ($100 a day) during hiseight-day trip.

On these facts, Johnspends six days on business –the two days traveling countas business days – and onlytwo days on pleasure. So thetrip qualifies as business-relat-ed travel. He can deduct theentire airfare as well as fivedays’ lodging and 50% of themeals attributable to his busi-ness stay. Result: John deducts

a total of $2,800 ($1,500 air-fare, $1,000 lodging and $300meals).

Note that any personalexpenses, such as green fees atthe golf course, are nonde-ductible. Also, if family mem-bers accompany you on a trip, you can’t deduct their expens-es, but your travel may stillqualify as business-related.

Of course, this is just abrief summary of the pertinenttax rules. To review the taxrequirements for your travel

plans, check with us beforeyou hop on board.

Being a responsible petowner requires a sub-stantial commitment.

For dog owners, ensuring adog is well fed and exercised, and receives routine medicalcare are essential elements ofresponsible pet ownership.People new to dog ownershipmay not realize the impor-tance of early socializationand training of their new pet.

The American Veteri-nary Society of AnimalBehavior has outlined theimportance of early puppysocialization, preferably beforea puppy reaches 12 to 16weeks of age. This is a periodof important critical develop-ment, which can help the ani-mal grow into a well-adjustedpet.

New pet parents areencouraged to enroll in a

training class for their puppiesor, at the very least, to exposetheir puppies to other animalsand people at an early age.The experience not only helpsowners develop a strong bondwith their pets but alsoenforces positive behavior in afun atmosphere. If not social-ized, dogs may become aggres-sive or extremely off-put byother animals and people.Such dogs run a greater risk ofbeing surrendered to a shelter.

Although puppies maynot have completed theirentire run of immunizations atan early age, many vets agreethat early socialization withother animals outweighs therisk of contracting an illness. The benefits of this socializa-tion include proper interac-tion with people, off-leashplay to learn boundaries and

bite inhibition with otherpuppies.

Young pups are eagersponges, ready to absorb infor-

mation from their environ-ment and families. Early stim-ulation in a fun and support-ive manner will help preventsome potential behavioralproblems that can becomemore difficult to correct as a

puppy grows into adulthood.Although it is possible toteach an old dog new tricks it’smuch easier to teach dogs

when they are still eager pup-pies willing to learn.

Barking, biting, diggingand jumping are all behaviorspuppies are likely to engagein. It is key for pet owners todiscourage these behaviors as

early as possible because it canlead to a strained relationshipbetween pet parent and ani-mal if the dog continues toengage in these acts into ado-lescence. Very often dogs arechastised or surrendered sim-ply because they were nevertaught the proper way tobehave.

It is not necessary toenroll in a puppy trainingclass if owners feel confidentin their abilities to train thedog on their own. Workingwith the pet each and everyday for a small amount of timewill gradually drive home thenecessary lessons. Heaping alarge amount of praise on a jobwell done will positively rein-force desired actions. If apuppy training class is not partof a dog’s upbringing, at-hometraining and visits to a dog

park or puppy daycare canprovide the socialization thedog needs.

Puppies are willing andable to learn a great deal ofbehaviors at an early age.Responsible pet owners mustset the course for discipline, socialization and training thatcan foster a long and healthyrelationship.

Several varieties of roses arethornless or have very fewthorns. Many plant breeders

have developed roses withoutthorns, which are particularly safe forelderly gardeners, gardeners who

have young children or pets or thosewho simply do not want to worryabout thorns on their rose bushes.Smooth Touch roses are a popularand thorn-free breed of rose devel-oped in California in the 1960s byHarvey Davidson. These roses aretouted as 95 to 100 percent free ofthorns. Some of the SmoothTouch series include, "Ballerina,""Moonlight" and "Snowflake." A mod-erate climber, the "ZephirineDrouhin," named after the wife of aFrench rose enthusiast, is anotherpopular thorn-free breed of rose.Several multiflora ramblers thatdescended from Asian rose speciesalso are free of thorns. "Ghislainede Feligonde," "Veilchenblau,""Goldfinch," and "Ice Tea" are othersthat feature thorn-free canes andstems.

Did you know: The con-tinental United Stateshas warmed by about

1.3oF over the last 100 years, although observers say theimpact has been experienceddifferently from region toregion. As a result, meteorolo-gists are predicting a higher fre-quency of weather extremes, such as the two massive windand rain systems that collided

last fall during HurricaneSandy. On the brighter side, the home-building industrysays it is already on target fordelivering maximum occupantprotection, pointing to anenergy-saving concrete systemthat is popular right now ingreen construction. Lockingtogether like Lego, the pre-assembled insulated concreteform (ICF) produces walls with

hurricane and tornado impact-resistance up to 250 miles perhour. When compared towood, these walls are far moresound- and fire-resistant anddeliver energy savings and animproved indoor environmentas well. By eliminating woodframing, all drafts, cold spotsand potential mold growth arevirtuallyeliminated, accordingto leading ICF supplier,

Nudura, who note that home-owners are reporting savings ofup to 70 percent on their ener-gy bills. Make a note that anupgrade to concrete walls needsto be requested before con-struction begins. For builders, the newest efficiencies of thistype require keeping up withlatest technology and how toapply it. The switch to con-crete walls represents just one

of the major advancements inhome construction today andmore information is availableonline at www.nudura.com.

that unearthed a copper mine.In 1837, the residents of

Wayne found themselves inManchester Township in thenewly named Passaic County.

Finally, on April 12, 1847the first Wayne Townshiporganization meeting was heldat the Henry Casey House onthe Paterson HamburgTurnpike. The first mayor, called the Chairman of theTownship Committee until1962, was William S.Hogencamp. The Citizensvoted to name the town for thedashing hero of the revolution,General Anthony Wayne.

Throughout the 18th and19th Centuries, WayneTownship was a peaceful farm-ing community. It had its shareof grist, saw and cider mills, aswell as blacksmith shops.Family wills and documentsshow evidence of local slaveryon the farmsteads. Gradualabolition of slavery in NewJersey began in 1804, but thepractice continued under thename of “apprenticeship” untilthe federal government abol-ished it in 1865 by theThirteenth Amendment to theUnited States Consti-tution.There were few local indus-tries. Some iron was mined,

and brick yards made use ofrich deposits of clay.Gunpowder was made by thefirm of Laflin and Rand onRyerson Avenue.

The Morris Canal ranthrough the southwestern partof Wayne carrying produce tomarket and coal fromPennsylvania. The canal wasreplaced by the railroad at theend of the 19th Century. Onerailroad car could carry morethan a canal boat and be usedthe year round. Season freez-ing of the canal limited itsuse. The railroad broughtvacationers, as well as produce,in the early 20th century. Inthe summer hordes of peoplefrom Manhattan and Brooklyncame to live in the summerbungalows and enjoy the beau-tiful rivers.

World War II madetremendous change toWayne. Summer bungalowswere converted to year roundliving residences to accommo-date the people moving here towork in war related indus-tries. Following the war, farm-land was converted to residen-tial living. The growth ofWayne resulted in a new formof government in the1960’s. A mayor, council, busi-ness administrator type of gov-ernment was instituted in

1962. An antiquated postalsystem was modernized by anenergetic leadership of thelocal Chamber of Commerce.

Modern highways havemade Wayne Township a virtu-al crossroad in NorthJersey. Routes 23, 46 and 80and the Paterson HamburgTurnpike have made Wayneeasily accessed for business andhomes. Several national firmshave located here.

Education instructionbegan in Wayne in a dugoutschool near Brandon Avenue.Legend says Anthony Waynesheltered his horse here duringthe Revolution. TodayWayne’s excellent schoolsnumber nine elementary, threemiddle and two senior high

schools in addition to severalprivate schools for all ages.

The first religious houseof worship was the PreaknessReformed Church, althoughnow there are many in numberand denomination.

Wayne has six historichouses that are on the Stateand National Registers:Schuyler-Colfax House, DeyMansion, Van Riper-HopperHouse, Mead-Van DuyneHouse, Van Saun House andRyerson House. In addition, there are twenty historicallysignificant sites.

Over the years Wayne hashad nationally known individ-uals as residents: namely AlbertPayson Terhune, the famouswriter of collie dog books;

Cecil DeMille, the moviemogul; and LeGrand Parish, the inventor of theWestinghouse air brake, a cou-pling device, and fire brickboxes.

Another national celebri-ty was the Preakness horse.Purchased in 1868 by MiltonHolbrook Sandford, owner ofthe Preakness Stables at thecorner of Valley Road andPreakness Avenue, for$4,000. On his maiden start,Preakness was entered into the“Dinner Plate Stakes” at thenew Pimlico race Track inMaryland. Preakness won thefirst race on October 25th,1870. In 1873 the MarylandJockey Club started a new rac-ing classic for three year oldsand named it “The Preakness”in honor of the first horse towin a race at Pimlico.

Today Wayne offers manythings for people of all ages;nursery schools, excellent ele-mentary and secondaryschools, churches for all faiths,an excellent modern library, convenient shopping centers, swimming pools, lakes andorganized recreation for all toprovide quality living fortoday’s citizens.www.waynetownship.com/history-wayne

Lighter fare is more popu-lar when the weatherwarms up, as many peo-

ple don’t want to feel weigheddown by their diet. Fish is apopular summertime meal formany reasons, not the least ofwhich is that fish tends to belight but still flavorful. In addi-tion, many meals featuring fishcan be whipped up ratherquickly.

Such is the case with thefollowing recipe for “GrilledGarlic Shrimp with a FreshHeirloom Tomato Sauce” fromLaurey Masterton’s “The FreshHoney Cookbook” (StoreyPublishing). Fresh and simple, this meal can be enjoyed as achange of pace at summer bar-becues or simply as a light week-night meal with the family.Grilled Garlic Shrimp with aFresh Heirloom Tomato SauceServes 6For the marinated shrimp:½ cup extra-virgin olive oil¼ cup red wine vinegar2 garlic cloves, minced36 large shrimp, peeled and

deveined12 6-inch wooden skewersFor the tomato sauce:3 pounds assorted large heirloomtomatoes1 small sweet onion, minced1 garlic clove, minced½ teaspoon sea salt¼ teaspoon freshly ground blackpepper1 tablespoon honey, preferablysourwood honey¼ cup fresh basil leaves, cut intothin strips (chiffonade is the for-mal name for this cut), plusmore for garnish

Sea saltFreshly ground black pepper1. To marinate the shrimp, combine the olive oil, redwine vinegar and garlic in alarge bowl. Stir to combine.Add the shrimp and allow tosit, covered, for 1 hour. Stiroccasionally.2. Prepare a medium fire in acharcoal or gas grill. Soak theskewers in water for at least 30minutes to prevent them fromburning.3. To make the tomato sauce, bring a medium pot of water

to a boil. Place one or twotomatoes at a time into theboiling water. Watch themand, as you see the skin split, remove with a slotted spoonand place in a bowl of coolwater. At this point, it will bevery easy to slip off the skins.4. Cut the peeled tomatoesinto a small dice. Put the cuttomatoes into a large bowl.Add the onion, garlic, salt, pepper, and honey. Stir gentlyto combine.5. Skewer the shrimp, 3 perskewer. Grill the skeweredshrimp for 1 to 2 minutes oneach side, until they are pink.Sprinkle lightly with sea saltand a couple grinds of freshpepper.6. Just before serving, add thebasil leaves to the tomatosauce. Taste and add more saltif necessary.7. Ladle the tomato sauceonto a serving platter andarrange the skewers on top ofthe sauce. Garnish with morebasil leaves and enjoy!
