MEMPHIS TO HOST 2008 C-USA VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPFor the first time since 1991 (17 years) the Uni-versity of Memphis will host a volleyball Con-ference Championship. From Nov. 20-23, the Tigers will welcome 11 other C-USA member schools to battle it out for the league’s tourna-ment title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The tournament will feature four first-round matches on Thursday, November 20, four quarterfinal matches on Friday, Novem-ber 21 and two semifinal matches on Saturday, November 22. The championship match will be played on Sunday, November 23 and will be televised by CBS-College Sports.

ELMA ROANE FIELDHOUSEThe Elma Roane Fieldhouse will be the site of the C-USA Volleyball Championships. The Fieldhouse serves as the home for the U of M volleyball team and the Tigers women’s bas-ketball squad. The 2,500-plus seat arena has provided the Tigers with a great home-court ad-vantage over the years.

The Fieldhouse is named after the Lady Tigers’ former women’s athletic director and former head

coach, Elma Roane. Roane was a pioneer for women’s athletics at The University of Memphis, and it was through her efforts that women’s athletics have become a fixture at the university. Ms. Roane still

regularly attends Lady Tiger games at the Fieldhouse bearing her name and is one of the program’s most ardent supporters.

The quality of the Elma Roane Fieldhouse is con-stantly being upgraded. Air conditioning was add-ed prior to the 2000-01 season, and in 1999-2000, a large mural of a Tiger was placed on the north end wall welcoming fans to the Fieldhouse - nick-named The Jungle. Over the summer of 2003, the chair back seating was increased to 900.

The Fieldhouse is the entire package when it comes to women’s basketball and volleyball games. Outside of the main arena are two side gyms, and located just off the main hallway is the locker room area and the athletic training facility. The locker room area features satellite offices for the coaches, a dressing area for the players and a lounge for the players and coaches to rest in on off days and to watch film on practice days. The facility also includes a washer and dryer for the equipment managers’ use during the season.

The Fieldhouse was dedicated in 1952 after the men’s basketball team played their first game

in the newly-constructed gym in December of 1951. The Fieldhouse has undergone several operational changes over the years, and for the past three years, the focus has shifted to the overall appearance.

In the summer of 2005, the Tiger women’s bas-ketball and volleyball teams both benefited from the addition of a weight room to the lower level of the Fieldhouse. The weight room features top-of-the-line Power Lift combo racks with Iron Grip weights. It also features four Woodway High Speed Treadmills, which are specifically made for the training of elite level athletes.
