Zig Zag Child’s Hat

Two yarns give texture and depth to this zigzag pattern. The hat is knit using the twined knitting technique. While knitting each yarn trades places, back yarn over front, then the new back yarn over the new front yarn. Skill Level: Intermediate Size: Child’s Medium Finished Circumference: 18-1/2” Materials: One skein of each yarn will make all three projects MC: 1 skein Cascade 220 Superwash Paints (100% Superwash Wool 100g. 220 yards), color 9880, blue varie-gated or 9863 green variegated alternate color way CC: 1 skein Cascade 220 Superwash Solid (100% Superwash Wool 100g. 220 yards) color 885 Blue 2 size 7 circular needles (16 or 24") or 4 double point needles Blunt sewing needle 2 stitch markers Gauge 12 sts and 12 rnds = 2" in zigzag twined knitting Stitch pattern - Zigzag Stripe Rnd 1: *With MC TK1 "over", with CC TK1 "over"*, repeat * to * Rnd 2: *With MC TK1 "under", with CC TK1 "under"*, repeat * to * Background Wind two - 20 gram center pull balls of each color This pattern is worked in the round on one circular needle. At the crown, a second circular needle or 4 double points are added to accommodate the small radius. Brim Cast on 100 stitches (not counting the slip knot) with the German long tail cast on with CC in the left hand and MC in the right. Before joining, remove the slipknot. Join by slipping the first stitch off the left needle purl wise to the right needle. Cinch the loose loops. Braid (Solid MC in alternate color way) Rnd 1: wyif *TP MC bringing the back yarn under the front, TPCC* back yarn under front, repeat * to *, TP into the first sl st Rnd 2: wyif *TP MC bringing the back yarn over the front, TPCC * back yarn over the front, repeat * to *, Wyib, working in zigzag stripe pattern, TK for 12 rounds

Rnd 13: wyif *TP MC with back yarn over the front, TPCC with back yarn over the front*; repeat * to * Continue with zigzag stripe pattern for 8 rnds (4” total from cast on edge) Change to 2 MC strands Rnd 1: TK MC alternating back strand over front Rnd 2: Place a marker after every 10 sts. TK MC alternating back strand under front Decrease rnds – maintain zigzag patt Rnd 1: *TK to 2 sts before M, TK2tog, mm, repeat * to end of rnd Rnd 2: TK even Repeat rnds 1 and 2 until 8 sts bet markers, dec every rnd until 5 sts rem Cut yarns, thread one through the loops, cinch and weave in the ends.
