CLASS CLASSIFICATIONS For the purpose of this show if entry numbers warrant it horse classes may be divided into two different “types”: Classic and Modern. You can find the description of each of these types below. Owners may select whichever type they deem most suitable for their horse but must remain within that “type” for the duration of the show. Horses entered in a Classic class are not eligible to enter a Modern class and vice versa. Please note our committee, judges, stewards etc will not be making this decision for you – we expect you to decide. Judges will be instructed to only award the correct type in that class.
CLASSIC MINIATURE HORSE
(a) Are small and compact (b) Have a sturdy bone and thicker hair coat, particularly the mane and tail (c) The head may be slightly larger and the neck is often stouter by comparison with a Modern horse but
still overall well proportioned (d) The ears are small (e) A large eye is favoured, well set between a wide forehead. A straight face is favoured over a roman
nose. (f) A good sloping shoulder with the neck coming out of the shoulder so the head and neck is held high
rather than coming straight out of the body. (g) The body and legs should form a square. A rectangular appearance is not recommended. (h) Legs must be straight. Cow or sickle hocks, over or behind at the knee, club feet, turned out or twisted
conformation abnormality are to be penalised. (i) The chest should be broad. An overly narrow chest is not recommended (j) These are strong, stocky miniature horses which are cob‐like in appearance, similar in type to a quarter
horse.
-
MODERN MINIATURE HORSE
Youngstock Adult
(a) Are very refined (b) They are longer in the leg and finer boned than their Classic cousins (c) The head should be carried high on a well arched neck which should be symmetrical and proportionate
to the body (d) The jaw should be fine with flaring nostrils (e) Throatlatch should be refined (f) Ears should be short, sharp and erect (g) A large eye is favoured, well set between a wide forehead. Dish or straight face is favoured over roman
nose (h) A good sloping shoulder with the neck coming high out of the shoulder (i) This horse must be well balanced with good symmetry. The body and legs should form a square except
youngstock which may be taller than they are long (j) The body should have a trim, tight barrel with a clearly defined wither, be short coupled and have a
level back and flat croup (k) Legs must be straight. Cow or sickle hocks, over or behind at the knee, club feet, turned out or twisted
legs, wide behind, bowed tendons, unsightly windgalls, splints, enlarged joints and any other conformation abnormality are to be penalised
(l) Mane and tail should be flowing. Tail set should be high (m) Overall appearance is of a very refined miniature horse similar in type to an American Shetland Pony or
Arabian.

AOTE CLASSES
Amateur Owned, Trained & Exhibited classes. The aim is to provide classes in which an amateur exhibitor can show his/her horses without having to compete with horses that have been trained, groomed and/or conditioned by a professional during the current calendar year. Eligibility rules:
1/ A person is considered an amateur when he or she is no longer eligible to compete in youth classes and has not engaged in any activities, except for as a youth, during the past five (5) calendar years which are listed below
(a) Having accepted remuneration for showing any horse at halter, in performance competition, training, schooling either horses or other persons
(b) Having accepted remuneration for having conducted seminars, clinics, given instruction in showing, training or judging
(c) Having accepted remuneration for judging (except for reimbursement of costs such as fuel, meals etc)
An individual who has had entry fees paid or has received prize money would still be considered an amateur.
Having the occupation of veterinarian, farrier, owning a tack store or agistment facility do not affect the amateur status of a person who is otherwise qualified.
2/ The horse exhibited by the AOTE must be trained, conditioned, groomed and shown ONLY by the AOTE or a non‐professional family member in all divisions entered during the previous calendar year from the date on which the class is held. Non‐professional family members are defined as spouse, mother, father, brother, sister, niece, nephew, son, daughter, grand child, grandparent, legal ward, in‐laws, step‐children, step‐parents and step‐siblings. No one with a professional trainer in the household or on the premises may compete in the AOTE division. No horse previously trained by a professional trainer may enter AOTE classes even if they have changed ownership and the new owner is eligible for AOTE status until their one (1) calendar year exclusion period has been fulfilled.
Clarifications: Grooming includes bathing, clipping, razoring and all other allowable enhancements needed to prepare the horse for showing. Conditioning includes, but is not limited to exercising and neck or body wrapping. An AOTE horse may be held or petted by anyone. The petting of a horse with your bare hand is not considered grooming the horse. Anyone may assist an AOTE horse in an emergency.
Dental, medical and farrier care DO NOT have to be done by the AOTE exhibitor.
3/ Another amateur may show AOTE horses in classes only when the AOTE has more than one horse qualified to enter that class. Another amateur may assist in any class requiring multiple handlers.
4/ AOTE horses may be transported to and from shows by anyone including trainers. This includes loading, unloading, feeding and watering during transport.
5/ Ownership – Any horse or pony entered in the AOTE classes must be owned or leased by the amateur individually or jointly with the amateur’s family as previously defined or family owned corporation, stud or farm. Such ownership or lease must be evidenced by the current Certificate of Registration for that animal.
6/ A contestant may exhibit more than one horse provided they each meet the selection criteria.
YOTE CLASSES
Youth Owned, Trained and Exhibited Classes. The aim is to provide classes in which an amateur youth exhibitor can show his/her horses without having to compete with horses that have been trained, groomed and/or conditioned by a professional during the current calendar year. Eligibility rules:
1/ All rules applying to the AOTE classes also apply to the YOTE classes.
2/ Youth competitors are deemed to be 17years or under actual age on the day of the show. Note that age restrictions may apply to individual YOTE classes.
-
AOTE & YOTE
All competitors who enter an AOTE or YOTE class are responsible for knowing the class rules. Any person who violates these rules shall be subject to disciplinary action which may include loss of your amateur status for a time period to be determined by the MH&PE committee and loss of awards or prizes for the show in which the infraction occurred. Show protest rules apply and all protests must be made in writing within one (1) hour of the applicable class or before the closure of that show ring.
VERSATILITY CLASS
Versatility is another new class we are trialling for this show. The horse or pony will perform three (3) disciplines in ONE (1) class.
Harness Driving
Halter
Hunter (abbreviated course)
All three disciplines to be judged equally and combined for final placing. Any horse disqualified from one division is disqualified from the class.
(a) Horses or ponies must be 3 years of age or older (b) Stallions in this class must be handled by persons 14 years or older (c) One assistant ONLY will be allowed in the arena only for the heading and unharnessing of the horse or
pony (d) Exhibitor and assistant must be properly attired
Class procedure:
(a) Horses will enter the ring in harness at a working trot and then perform a working trot and walk in both directions of the arena. Headers/assistants will be asked to enter the arena. Horses will be asked to rein back.
(b) The steward or judge will signal the driver and header, as a team, to remove cart and harness from the horse and do any grooming or bridle changes. Each horse and handler will then present to the steward in order of completion. After a two minute time limit the steward will signal time. Any horse not removed from cart or harness will score 0 points for this section. Headers will be asked to exit the arena with cart and harness, in an orderly manner.
(c) Horses remain in the same order for the rest of the class as they present to the judge after section b is completed.
(d) Horses will be judged at Halter. (e) Horses will then jump a course of three jumps to demonstrate style, manner and way of going. One
left turn to the inside may be demonstrated.
Scoring – Judges shall award points up to a maximum of 10 points per class section with the winner being determined by totalling the scores – highest score shall be awarded first followed by descending order. In the event of a tie emphasis shall be placed on Harness first, followed by Halter and then Hunter.
COLOUR CLASSES
Shall be judged 80% on coat colour including markings and condition and 20% conformation.
