They are having a great time there in the Urewera, and I know that they will be very excited to be in such a beautiful remote part of New Zealand. Just a cautionary note to parents of students returning from camp. On Friday 22 May when they return home, some staff will be down at the hall gate to assist with unloading the bus and to ensure student safety. Please support staff and students as best as you can. Soccer Tournament On Tuesday 19 May our school participated in the Manurewa Zone Football Day at the War Memorial Park in Manurewa. It was organised by Mr. John Robinson, Principal of Everglade School and was a really well run day. We entered two teams, one who had played a bit of soccer and the other who had hardly played at all. The Tirst team was third in Division One and our second team was fourth in Division Four. Unfortunately our experienced players were at camp for this tournament. Scooters From time to time I hear that scooters have gone missing. We have provided the students with good quality scooter racks. For the security of all scooters please name them clearly and have locks for them. The school can not take responsibility for scooter security other than that. Road Safety You may have seen the report in the media this week where a child was badly injured while crossing the road near Takanini School. It was wonderful that a Sikh Indian man used his turban to support the child’s head through this very sad ordeal. However the fact remains that cars travel too quickly around schools. We all need to remind children not to run across the road. These messages need to be told to all children every single day, by both parents and teachers or we will suffer a similar tragedy. Reading With our focus on Reading this year we are encouraged by the fact that many parents are behind us in supporting reading in the home. Last night I ran a reading session to give some tips on how to help children to read. I may run another session late in the year. We do have an amazing program at our school called the Quick 60 program, and we have a number of teacher aides who use this program to signiTicantly raise reading levels. Forty students will be undertaking this programme, which aims to move students from 2 levels below their chronological age up to their chronological age after they have read the 60 books in the program. Next year we will try to have even more students participating. However like all reading programs, they are more effective and successful when they are combined with reading in the home every night, including weekends and holidays. “By the time students leave us in Year 6 we want them to be confident, inquisitive, articulate problem solvers, who can use a varity of communication tools to make sense of their world” BOOK CHARACTER DAY!! Thursday 28th May M.E.P is holding a book character dress up day. Come to school dressed as your favourite character from a book. There will be a parade where you can show off your fantastic costumes. Date: Thursday, the 28th of May Attire: Your favourite character from a book

B2 and E3 are lucky to be buddy classes, and every week we meet to do something fun. This week E3 brought their book bags and came to read to their buddy. The buddys job was to listen carefully, help if needed and then ask questions about the book. Some of the questions that we came up with where

    - What is the characters name?- Can you describe the character to me?- What is the title of the book and where can you find it?- What was a tricky word?- Where did the story take place?

After E3 read so well, it was B2s turn to read to their buddy, and B2s job was to read with expression. Both classes did an excellent job reading

T is for the very, very tight clothes that he wears H is for a hairy and smelly nose hairs E is for elephant ears that are bigger than his head

B is for big bald head that he never washes F is for farting out frogscottle G is for grabbing and stealing a human for the first time ever.
