The area a180 wouldprovide good visual landmarks for assemlUy.woAreato3117N :.. l3108E {#60)3 12 2N - 1~ 121E (# 61) landfall and IP would provide a good upwind runon the target.,to ,A left turn was to be madeafter leaving the target.ARGEl 'toIwotoBase

A good check point halfway between the target and base.It would also provide an emergency landing field.

    (3) Flight Engineerins:(8) Flight Plan: Speeds and altitudes. except tarbombingrun. were used to obtain maximum fuel econemyand safety.(b) Loading: Fuel reserve data of formation missionsto Kyushunt the altitude planned indicated that the average aircraftof the 73rd Wingwould require full wing and center wing tanks. Total

fuel Wouldbe approximately 67.50gallons. It uas estimated that theaverage aircraft of the 3l3th Wing ..auld need, in addition to fulluing and center 'fling tanks. 1ull banb bay tank for a total fuel ofapproximately 7300 gallons.1 . . . BombLoad:

!_. Nomaximumor minimumload uas specified. The average bombload for the 7Jrd 'fiing, fused on previous missions, was estimated a1l approxima.tely 9000 pounds. That for tre 3l3th Wing(based on previous missions) uas estimated at 8000 pounds.]'. .Ammunitionload was estimated at 1.500pounds.

    (4) Radar Planning:(a) Radar scope photographs on hand gave no indicationthat the airfields could be bombedby direct radar methods. Offsettechnique might have been used b u t the results would probably not havebeen good. Therefore, the center of the City of Kagoshimawas chosenas the primary radar target. All effort was to be made to fly directlyov.er the visual target. If cloud c'over were to 'SlCist, all aircraftwere 1:'0 turn right and bombKagoshim. The IP and landfall were identi-cal and easily indent:i1'h.bl~ on the AFQ.-13.(Il) Actual scope photos of the area (with a mapgiviIlfthe location of the pic.turesJ were provided for the radar operators. They were also provided with a :uadar navigOltion chart. (a) In one Wing seme confusion was caused by theplurality of targets and sorne aircraft bombedt;he primary visualts.rget by radar. There was also.some difficulty with assembly pro ..cedure, resUlting in mixed formations over the target .Correcti'UIaction has been taken by adopting the policy of assigning specificassembly points to each Wing.(b) Other minor deviations fram the briefed planwere made by formations over the targets. For example, one forma-tion did .not bombon the .specific axis of attack 'iIIhile another madea second run over the target ~
