KILCLUNEY,or KILCLOONEY, a district parish, partly in the barony of Lower Orior, but

chiefly in that of Lower Fews, county of Armagh, and province of Ulster, 2 miles (S.W.)

from Markethill, on the road from Newry to Armagh; containing 7627 inhabitants. It was

constituted, in 1792, by disuniting 22 townlands from the parish of Mullaghbrack, and

comprises, according to the Ordnance Survey, 12,833¼ statute acres, of which 3109 are

heath and bog, and the remainder in a high state of cultivation. At Carricklane is a quarry

of good clay-slate, from which was raised the stone for building Gosford Castle. Lead ore

has also been found in considerable quantities, and there are indications of coal. The

weaving of linen and cotton cloth is carried on. It is in the diocese of Armagh, and on its

separation from Mullaghbrack, a perpetual curacy, in the gift of the Prebendary of

Mullaghbrack, was instituted, under the provisions of an act of the 7th of Geo. III.; and a

church was built at Glassdrummond, a plain neat edifice, for the erection of which the late

Board of First Fruits gave £500. The glebe-house, towards which the same Board granted

£450 as a gift and £50 as a loan, is a handsome building, situated on a glebe of 22 acres.

In the R.C. divisions the parish forms part of the union or district of Lisnadill, or

Ballymacnab; the chapel is a large and handsome edifice at Clady. There are two places of

worship for Presbyterians in connection with the Seceding synod, one of the first class at

Redrock, the other at Ballylane. There are eight public schools, some of which are aided by

donations from the Rev. Dr. Blacker, others by Lords Charlemont and Gosford, and the

parochial school by the prebendary and perpetual curate; they afford instruction to about

680 children. Some vestiges yet exist of the old church of Kilcluney, which was burnt in

1641, and also of a bawn built in 1619 by H. Achison, Esq., which was destroyed at the same

time. Cairn-amnhanaghan, or “The Vicar’s Cairn”, which is noticed more particularly under

the head of Mullaghbrack, is in this district. [The Mullaghbrack head adds the following:

"On the estate of Lord Charlemont is a cairn, called Cairnamnhanaghan, or “the monk’s

cairn”, a conical heap of stones still covering more than two acres, though much reduced by

the peasantry, who have carried away many of the stones for building, a practice now

prohibited by the proprietor."]

Ballylane Tithe Applotments

No tithe applotment records survive for Ballylane. There were definitely some tithe-free townlands

in the area around Ballylane, does anyone know whether Ballylane was tithe-free or whether the tithe

records don't exist for some other reason? Fortunately, an even better alternative exists. (See the

next section.)

Ballylane Survey by the Earl of Charlemont (1827)

In 1827, Francis William Caulfeild, 5th Viscount Charlemont and 2nd Earl of Charlemont, had a survey

taken of many of his properties in County Armagh and Count Tyrone. For Ballylane, the result was a

wonderful schedule of every tenant and subtenant in the townland, with a description and the area of

each parcel. Each parcel was numbered, and there is a large matching numbered map of Ballylane

showing precisely the boundaries of each tenant's parcel(s). The adjacent townlands of

Ballymacnabb, Clady More and Clady Beg were surveyed at the same time, and others, as well. The

schedule of tenants can be found on FHL film 1279357, but the map has to be gotten directly from

PRONI where it is in fond T/1176/5. There was also a survey of bog leases done at the same time.

The numbers and letters in the left-hand column match up with the corresponding numbers and

letters on the Griffith's map of Ballylane (see above). Where a small letter is shown, such as "12Ab",

this means that the lessee occupies a house marked "b" on the map within the lessor's property

marked "12A".

The Area is given in English acres, roods and perches, where a rood = 40 perches and an acre = 4

roods. One English acre = 43,560 square feet.

The annual tax on land and buildings and the total annual tax are given in pounds sterling, shillings,

and pence, where 1 pound = 20 shillings and 1 shilling = 12 pence. Where ")" appears in the total

column, the tax on the parcel is included in the line above.

"Ofcs" means Offices. "Bldgs" means Buildings.

BALLYLANE SCHOOLS

According to the 1826 survey by the Commissioners of Education (FHL film 1559450), there were 12

schools at that time in Kilclooney Parish. These included 4 Catholic schools in Kilmachugh, Water-

Street School in Edenykennedy, Black Quarter Bridge School in Clady More, and Tullywill School in

Clady Beg; 1 Presbyterian school in Derrycughan; 5 dissenting or seceding Presbyterian schools in

Glassdrummond, Brackley, Collison's School in Clady More, Rock School-House in Cavanagrow, and the

Covenanting Meeting-House School in Ballylane; 1 Episcopal school (Blairstown School in Lisnagat), and

1 school under construction but not yet open at Ballyleanbeg in Clady More, whose religious affiliation

was not specified.

Kilmachugh Catholic school and Blairstown Episcopal school are both on the northwest border of

Ballylane, so they are quite close. The closest Presbyterian school is in the adjacent Loughgilly Parish

in Tullyallen, about 1½ miles away, but the Covenanter school is right in Ballylane. All of the other

schools are much farther away, beyond daily walking distance for the kids.

In 1826, the headmaster of the Kilmachugh Catholic School was Owen McConnell, and the school was

described as a "one room thatched cabin". The student body included about 17 Presbyterians, 8

Catholics, and 3 Episcopalians, including 14 boys and 14 girls.

The headmaster of the Blairstown Episcopal School was William Haddon, and the school was

described as a "thatched house". The student body included about 2 Presbyterians, 3 Catholics, 3

Episcopalians, and 37 of other Protestant denominations, including 23 boys and 22 girls.

The headmaster of the Tullyallen Presbyterian School was Alexander McCullogh, the school was

attached to the Tullyallen Presbyterian Church and was rated "good". The student body included

33-35 Presbyterians, 5-7 Catholics, and no Episcopalians, including 23 boys and 17 girls.

The headmaster of the Covenanter Meeting-House School in Ballylane was John Martin, and the

school was built by the congregation for £15. The student body included 22 Covenanters and 3

Catholics, including 15 boys and 10 girls.

Ballylane Land Ownership

When Griffith's valuation was taken in 1864, the ownership of Ballylane was held 100% by the Earl of

Charlemont.

(1) In 1609, the entire County of Armagh, together with most other Ulster counties, was seized by

King James I of England.

(2) In 1620, Sir Toby Caulfeild (1565-1627) of Oxfordshire, England was given lands in Ireland,

including Ballylane, and created Baron Charlemont (the name of a fort on the Blackwater), for his

services to King James I.

(3) In 1627, upon Toby Caulfeild's death, since he no children, the lands passed to his brother's son,

William Caulfeild, 2nd Baron Charlemont (1587-1640).

(4) In 1640, upon William Caulfeild's death, the lands passed to his son, Toby Caulfeild, 3rd Baron

Charlemont (1621-1642).

(5) In 1642, upon Toby Caulfeild's death, the lands passed to his brother, Robert Caulfeild, 4th Baron

Charlemont (1622-1642).

(6) In 1642, upon Robert Caulfeild's death, the lands passed to his brother, William Caulfeild, 5th

Baron Charlemont (1624-1671), and 1st Viscount Charlemont.

(7) In 1671, upon William Caulfeild's death, the lands passed to his son, William Caulfeild, 2nd

Viscount Charlemont (ca. 1655-1726).

(8) In 1726, upon William Caulfeild's death, the lands passed to his son, James Caulfeild, 3rd Viscount

Charlemont (1682-1734).

(9) In 1734, upon James Caulfeild's death, the lands passed to his son, James Caulfeild, 4th Viscount

Charlemont and 1st Earl of Charlemont (1728-1799).

(10) In 1799, upon James Caulfeild's death, the lands passed to his son, Francis William Caulfeild, 5th

Viscount Charlemont and 2nd Earl of Charlemont, (1775-1863).

(11) In 1863, upon Francis William Caulfeild's death, all of his children were by that time deceased,

so the lands passed to his nephew, James Molyneux Caulfeild, 3rd Earl of Charlemont, 6th Viscount

Charlemont (1820-1892).
