A Note From Fr. John September 06, 2015

Dear Friends, One of my New Years resolutions was to laugh more. Yes I realize it is September but this is as soon as I could get to it! Pope Francis often quips that too many Christians drink vinegar for breakfast or as I like to say seem to have been baptized in pickle juice. Our greatest witness at times, despite the challenges of bearing the name Christian in today’s world, is the joy we have despite the hostility and opposition we often face. And one of the best ways to keep the joyful spirit active is to laugh at ourselves. Today, in fact, thanks to the wonders of the Internet we no longer have to wait for those little vignettes in a monthly edition of the Reader’s Digest. A website that is entirely dedicated to poking fun at the foibles of Catholics is called The Eye of the Tiber (eyeofthetiber.com). The Tiber being the river that runs through the city of Rome. Most of the posts are little spoofs, lampoons or satire and news parody directed towards the way we Catholics see the world. Some of their posts have headings such as: “Pope Francis Changes Mind: Declares 2016 Year of Di-vine Wrath” (instead of the Year of Mercy). Or did you ever think about what Pope Emeritus Benedict does while Pope Francis travels to the US at the end of the month? Well how about this, “Benedict confers epic keg-ger at Apostolic Palace During Pope Francis US visit.” Then there’s this, “ Vatican opens Retirement Commu-nity to accommodate expected influx of retired Popes”. And then: “Vatican approves new Emoji translation of Mass.” The Vatican announced today that Pope Francis has approved a new emoji translation of the Mass to help young adults more actively follow along dur-ing church services. “We’ve found that most young adults can no longer read complete sentences or even com-plete words,” said Vatican spokesman Ronaldo Bernini, going on to say that the minority of young adults that can read, cannot do so fast enough to keep up with the blistering pace of the Mass. “We still have some work to do before the final version comes out. We’ve hired over one hundred teenagers to look over the new missal and to see whether, for instance, our choice of a clover is the best emoji for the word consubstantial.” Bernini said that he hopes the new missal will not only help young adults better understand the Mass, but that it might also help parents learn how to tell their children that they love and miss them without having to “navigate the treacherous waters of actually having to talk.” Some of the posts wade into politics as well: “ Supreme Court demands apology from God for Sodom and Gomorrah”. “Just hours after ruling that all Americans, no matter their sexual orientation, can now legally marry the people they love, the U.S. Supreme Court went forward with plans to demand that God apologize and make amends for His actions at Sodom and Gomorrah. Many are calling the decision to hold God liable for the destruction of the impenitent cities as a victory for gay rights activists who have fought for centuries to see God brought to justice. The justices found that, under the 14th Amendment, states must issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and recognize same-sex unions that have been performed in other states, and that the Di-vine judgment of God that was passed upon Sodom and Gomorrah was unjust. Justice Anthony Kennedy deliv-ered the majority opinion and was joined by Justices Ginsburg, Kagan, Breyer and Sotomayor in calling God to step down from his post immediately.” Some of the best just make fun our ourselves: “Area Catholic confirms too many obligations to make it to Mass on Holy Day of Obligation.” Or “Man drops $10 in donation basket like he’s some kind of Beverly Hills Millionaire.” This seems to ring true: “Family fighting for good seats at Christmas Eve Mass with the zeal of 12th Century Crusaders.” How about, “Homily never going to end, Sources confirm”. This could be helpful: “New APP allows users to locate where least Crappy Homily going to be delivered in Area.” One of my favorites: “Parishioner dies after botched Homily”. Reminds me of the time during Mass many years ago a man actually had a heart attack and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Afterwards I went to see him and asked, “What do you think caused the heart attack?” He looked at me said, “Father, I think it was the homily”! Ha! Great answer. That man was back in Church the next Sunday. I think what helped him recover so quickly was his sense of humor. Laughter is often said to be the best medicine. Love, Fr. John B.

Father Robert Barron's The Mystery of God

Who God Is and Why He Matters

Atheism is on the rise. Skeptical thinkers attack belief in God as irration-al or, even worse, dangerous. The so-called New Atheism has attracted mil-lions of young people thanks to bestsel-ling books such as The God Delusion and God Is Not Great. How should Christians respond? How can we turn the tide of secularism and draw people back to God? In The Mystery of God: Who God Is and Why He Matters, Fr. Robert Barron reaches into our rich intellectual tradition to teach us how. Using the in-sights of St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, Pope Benedict XVI, he uncov-ers a clear yet sophisticated understand-ing of what we mean by “God.” On September 24th, the Wom-en's Studies Ministry will begin the Mystery of God 7 week program. We meet Thursday's 7-8:30pm in McCready Hall. $30 registration fee includes mate-rials, snacks, and free childcare is pro-vided. To find out more information, please contact Carey Gass at [email protected] or stop by our registration table after Mass to sign up.
