Principal\\\'s Message

Interschool Sports

Monday saw the second of our Cluster Sports Days with some great weather and fixtures. All of our teams continue to be competitive thanks to the training undertaken by our wonderful group of staff coaches. The commitment, skills, behaviour and sportsmanship of the various teams has always been a feature of Gaven state School, and this current crop of team has not let us down. Well done to everyone involved. Results of the first and second rounds are below:

Twilight Professional Development Session for Teachers

Next Wednesday, all of our Teachers were involved in a 2 hour after school professional development session. Teachers will be involved in a workshops around improving student writing. I would like to commend all of our staff for their ongoing commitment to both achieving the goals of their performance plans and most importantly to providing the best possible education for students.

Parliament House Visit

On Wednesday 21 June, our Year 6 students will be visiting Parliament House in Brisbane as part of their History and Civics studies. They will be taking the train to Brisbane and as well as Parliament House will be visiting the Science Centre. My thanks to Mrs Mutch and the Year 6 teachers for organising this valuable trip for the year 6 students.

AFL Queensland Cup Round 1

On Wednesday 30 June, our AFL Excellence students took part in the first round of the AFL Cup Competition. We fielded three teams – essentially a senior boys’ team, a junior boys’ team and a girls’ team. Our Senior Boys and Girls’ teams have made it through to the second round of the competition, while it was a valuable experience for our Junior Boys’ Team who competed well against older students. They will be better placed next year for this experience. My thanks to Mr Gislingham, Mr Lee and Mr Abercrombie who coached and accompanied the team to the Pacific Pines Power ground where the fixtures for Gold Coast North were held.

School Disco

Our school Disco for term 2 will be held on Thursday 14 June. The Junior Disco theme is “PJs

(Pajamas)” and will run from 5.30pm-6.30pm and the Senior Disco’s theme is “Science” and will run from 6.30pm-8.00pm. There will be prizes for the most creative costume (home-made), best dancers and game winners. Senior students will not be allowed in the Junior Disco and so should only arrive just before the Senior Disco at 6.30pm. Cost will be $4 per student.

Artist in Residence

The Artist in Residence program commenced on 31st

May and was completed this week. The program

will culminate with our Art Show to be held in the Woodgate Hall on 27th

June from 3.30 – 6.00pm. We aim to have a piece of work by all students in the school at this show and it is always a must see as it showcases the artistic talents of the students in our school. The art work can either be the piece completed as part of the Artist in Residence Program or a piece of work done in class. A prize is given for the piece of work judged to be the best in each year level by our visiting artist. This is an amazing display of the artistic talents of our students and is not to be missed. Entry into the art show costs a gold coin.

Parent Engagement in Schools Research Project

Last Year, we participated in the Parent Engagement in Schools Research Project undertaken by the University of Queensland. We were identified as a school who is achieving well with parent engagement. We will soon be sent the publication of the 4 schools identified in the study. In addition the university is producing a Parent Engagement Toolkit for schools and have asked to come to our school to collect material and take videos of 9 selected practices at our school which show a point of difference to other schools in the state. Well done to staff and parents for the levels of community engagement at Gaven State School.

Report Cards

A reminder that under the Australian Curriculum, Gaven students are assessed against the same standards as all other students at their year level, in every Australian state and territory. Whether or not a student receives an A, B or C on their report card will depend on how well they have achieved the required national standard, not on how well they have done compared to others in their class.

Mums and Dads sometimes feel disappointed if their child has one or more ‘C’s on their report card. This can be because they understand a ‘C’ to mean ‘average’. However, a ‘C’ does not mean average. A ‘C’ is something to celebrate! Achieving a ‘C means that a student has achieved the required standard for their year level as outlined in the Australian Curriculum. In general, it means that students can remember and understand learning considered essential for their age.

Students who achieve As and Bs are usually required to demonstrate some kind of ‘higher order thinking, like applying learning to design a solution to a challenging problem. Getting 100/100 on a test does not guarantee an ‘A’, unless the test includes questions that requires the more advanced thinking associated with an ‘A’ standard in the Australian Curriculum. Of course, it is FANTASTIC when a student achieves an A or a B, and ALL of our children are encouraged to strive for excellence. That said, you can feel justly proud if your child achieves a C and should let them know that they have performed well.

Students receive a ‘D’ when they have not yet achieved the required standard, but are working towards it and continue to learn and develop. Students who receive an ‘E’ are experiencing difficulty and require intervention and support. Whatever mark your child receives, the teacher’s comments will tell you how hard they are trying and describe the progress being made.

Again this year, Report Cards will be handed out to students in conjunction with a Parent/Teacher Interview mostly on either Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 June (In conjunction with the Art Show). If you are unable to make an interview, the report cards will go home with students in the last week of the school term. If you have not received a report card, please see your child’s Teacher.

Behaviour Certificates

The first semester behaviour awards will also be distributed at this interview. In accordance with our promotion of high expectations for student behaviour, students are required to earn these certificate levels through recognition of behaviour in the classroom, the playground, the specialist lessons and extra-curricular activities eg sport, incursions, excursions etc. As with the marks outlined in a previous newsletter, a C (Bronze Certificate) indicates that a student has achieved the required standard and this should be acknowledged. Silver and Gold Certificates are only given to students with – Silver Certificate (Very Good Behaviour) and Gold Certificate (Exemplary Behaviour). While certificates are given according to criteria and are not based on numbers, we estimate that only a small number of students will receive the gold or silver level.

Swimming

In Term 3 we are providing the opportunity for all of our Years P-2 students to participate in an

8 week “Learn to Swim/Stroke Correction” program from Week 3 to Week 10 of next term (31st

July

through to 20th

September). Lessons will be conducted on either a Tuesday or Thursday and will be half an hour long. The aim of the program is to provide students with essential swimming skills. Payment is

due Friday 20th

July.

AFLQ Schools Cup

AFLQ CUP 30/5/2018

Gaven State school boys competed in the first round of the AFLQ State Cup. Gaven had two boy’s teams playing. Our first team were victorious on the day winning all five of their games and they will represent Gold Coast North in the second round of the State Cup.

Chappy\'s Space

BIG THANK YOU! Recently we held the Annual Chaplaincy Fundraising Dinner along with other northern GC schools at Helensvale SHS. The year 11 hospitality students served us a lovely meal and our school was the showcase this year, highlighting the services our chaplaincy service brings to Gaven. We also had a silent auction and I would like to thank those in our community who donated such as Becci Fox (Admin) who donated a beautiful flameless wax candle warmer from her SCENTSY range and Sandy Aird (teacher aide, P and C & Gaven mum) who donated a gorgeous makeup gift set from her Younique range . I would also like to thank Mr Carleton for his support being in the video and for attending the function. A big shout out to Mrs Victoria Robinson and Ms Kym Donachie for their attendance and support on the night also. You are all very much appreciated!

Another big thank you to the whole school community for your participation in Chappy Week activities and raising $532 on our free dress day. These funds go toward keeping our chappy service active and the programs that are part of that. Well done to all our winners of the colour-in competition, all of whom have been displayed in the library for 2 weeks. I know you will all be enjoying your tuckshop vouchers donated by the P and C.

GRANDAD’S GARDEN PROJECT:

You may have seen the construction behind the canteen. We are re-creating a garden from a social/emotional book called "I Grow in Grandad’s Garden". I would like to thank the McAlpine family who have donated the entire bottom row of succulents on our wall garden. Thank you so very much! Bunnings have been kind to donate the materials for the arch. We are needing more materials so if you have any contacts we would greatly appreciate it. Kids don’t come with an instruction manual. Whether you’re a mum, dad, single parent family, step parenting or a carer – the Triple P positive parenting program can help you with a specific problem, or provide tips on parenting and help with understanding your child’s development and behaviour. SMS Absence Line

Thank you to those parents who are utilising our SMS absence messaging service. This service is a 24 hour service that you can use to advise us of an upcoming absence (sick, holiday, Drs appt etc). This is our PREFERRED METHOD of advising of an absence. Please see below for the information needed when recording an SMS absence. Be sure to include ALL INFORMATION.

CHILD’S NAME & CLASS

REASON FOR ABSENCE

DATE/S OF ABSENCE

EG: Jo Smith 2C. Sick with tonsillitis 24-26th

July.

The number to text is:

0418 125 029

If you have not informed the school that your child is absent you will receive a text message. It will read as follows:

Gaven SS records show Joe Smith is absent 23/6/13. Pls reply SMS/MSG student name/absence reason/absence date.

SMS Absence Alerts

Parents/Caregivers are advised that the school will be using Mobile phone Short Message Service (SMS) to send text messages to parents notifying unexplained absence.

Parents will be informed by mobile phone Short Message System (SMS) each time their child is away from school and no explanation of the absence has been provided. At Gaven State School, student attendance is a high priority. We know that students who attend regularly are more likely to be successful. To improve our attendance procedures, we will be informing parents/caregivers about any unexplained absences for their child. The school expects parents/caregiver to contact the school in advance if they know their child is to be absent.

An SMS text message will be automatically sent to the mobile phones of parents explaining that our records show that your child is absent from school. The message will come from the phone number 0418 125 029 and read as follows:

Gaven SS records show Joe Smith is absent 23/6/13. Pls reply SMS/MSG student name/absence reason/absence date

Parents and caregivers with iPhones or Android phones can also benefit by installing School Star, a

highly secure, easy to use smartphone app. This allows you to receive and reply to important messages from the school for free.

Benefiting You and Your Child

1. You have the right to know that your child is safe.

If your child has not arrived at school, you need to know immediately.

2. Your child deserves the best possible chance of success.

Regular attendance is a key factor in school success.

3. You deserve the most responsive delivery system available.

A text message direct to your mobile phone is fast, effective and discrete. For parents with School Star, message delivery is first attempted as a notification through the app. However, if the in-app message isn’t opened within a few minutes, the system automatically sends an SMS, to ensure that

the important message reaches you, no matter what.

1. You must have immediate notification in times of crisis.

There may be times when we will need to reach a large number of parents instantly.

What Parents Must DoGaven State School is taking important steps to benefit your child. This is a shared responsibility, and parents must also help the school.

1. Keep your mobile phone details up to date.Make sure we have your current mobile phone number, and notify us immediately if this number changes.

2. Notify the school in advance when your child is absent (Before 9.15am).If you notify us as soon as you know your child will be absent, we will know your child is safe, and will not need to contact you. A School Star text message sent to us is the best way to do this.

3. Respond to messages from the school. If you receive an absence message from us, please respond via School Star or return SMS. We need to know why your child is absent.

4. If you receive a message you believe is an error, please phone the school

For example if you receive a message and your child was dropped off/sent to school

If you don’t have a mobile phone...Details of low-cost phone plans ideal for parents who want to benefit from the new system are available from mobile phone providers. We will maintain our existing contact methods for parents who do not have mobile phones.

Kiss\'n\'Go Procedure

Please find attached an information pamphlet which outlines the correct procedures for our Kiss’n’Go Zone.

We would like to thank parents for their patience, support and understanding whilst we establish this very important safety procedure.

NEW PAYMENT METHOD for Payment over the phone with Credit Card.

NEW PAYMENT METHOD for Payment over the phone with Credit Card.

The school office is no longer able to take credit card details over the phone as this is not Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard compliant.

We can now offer parents the ability to pay invoices over the phone using BPoint IVR (Interactive Voice Response).

Parents need to have their invoice ready and then call 1300 631 073 and enter their CRN,amount and credit card details to complete payment.

At the end of the call you will be provided with a unique payment receipt number.

BPoint Instructions

We would like to draw your attention to BPoint, our preferred method of payment. Once you have received an invoice from the school via email you will notice down the bottom the reference to BPoint. BPoint payments are allocated directly to the student and the payment will go towards that specific activity.

Please see the link below for detailed step by step instructions.

Student Arrival Times and Attendance

Student Arrival Times and Attendance

We have been tracking the attendance rate of students and the large volume of students that have been arriving late. Under the Education Act, a child (by law) must attend school each day from start to finish. Exclusion from school during the six hours of learning time, should only be for extenuating circumstances like illness.Having the day off for their birthday orgoing on a family holiday during the school term is not considered an acceptable reason. When these children return from holiday they can experience feelings of anxiety and stress about being ‘behind’ the other students. We acknowledge that sometimes a ‘one-off’ holiday is unavoidable (for many reasons) however, for those families that are doing this on a regular basis, this is impacting upon your child’s learning in more ways than one, as we know every day counts!

What can Parents do to help their children?

Children must attend school every day, and they must attend from the moment the first bell rings until the final bell is rung to dismiss them. Below is a table which outlines just how much schooling a child misses when they arrive late to school. It is quite alarming to see how much just 10 minutes a day can build up.
