211 Multimedia Web DesignLesson 7 Planning / Designing a Site

Starter

• Have a go at these recap games:

Objectives

• Understand the need for planning in web development.

• Know how to construct web plans.

• Create web plans for an existing web site.

Why do we plan?

• Remember, you are all creative professionals. You are creating a

website to meet requirements for a client.

• It is important to have a plan to give the client an idea of how

their site will look.

• It is also important for you to have a vision of where you are

going.

• No plan? Your site will not be effective.

How do you plan web design?

• Initial designs – like a concept or visualisation of how you want your

template to look like.

• A House Style Map – details of how your entire site map should look.

• A navigation / structure map – details of pages and how they link

together.

• A navigation menu structure – shows how your navigation will work

Initial Designs

• Like your Unit 1 designs, this is just an initial sketch of how your site will

be laid out. Yours would need to be a lot more detailed

Navigation Map

• This is a basic map, but it would be extended by writing what each page would contain (a VERY short description underneath each page)

House Style Map

• This shows how you will be consistent throughout your entire site.

A Navigation Structure

• This is an example navigation bar plan, which shows the title,

image and what the link switches to.

Your Turn

• You have now seen examples of each of the planning options.

• You have also created a sample site.

• You need to use this lesson, creating plans for the site you have made.

• NORMALLY: this is done before the project.

• Create a: basic sketch of your template, a site map, a house style plan

and navigation plan for your Conyers Site.

Objectives Review

• Understand the need for planning in web development.

• Know how to construct web plans.

• Create web plans for an existing web site.

Plenary

• Swap your plans with the person next to you.

• Could you make the site based on those plans?

• If you could – tell the person what you like about them

• If you could not, tell the person what they could do to improve their plans.
