Parish Nurse Update: To diagnosis Alzheimer’s Disease your DR/NP will do a thorough physical and neurological exam, review past medical history, ask about abilities to carry out daily activities and if

there are any changes in behavior or personality. Tests of memory, ability to problem solve, attention, counting and language may also be assessed. Standard medical tests such as blood and urine tests along with brain scans such as a CT, MRI or a PET scan may also be ordered. Some medications currently used to treat Alzheimer’s Disease are: Ancept (donepezil), Razadyne (galantamine), Exelon (rivastigmine) drugs that work by increasing the brain cell to cell communication depleted by Alzheimer’s Disease. These drugs, for some, keep current symptoms from progressing for a while. Namenda (memantine) works in a different brain communication network and helps slow progression of symptoms for those with moderate to severe Alzheimer’s Disease. Early diagnosis is important. Starting treatment early may preserve daily functioning for some time. Current treatment focuses on helping people maintain mental functioning, managing behavioral symptoms and trying to slow the disease process. It is important for families and caregivers to become well educated about Alzheimer’s Disease and its progression. (NIH.nia.gov/Alzheimer’s Disease/Treatment /4/2018-Mayoclinic.org/Alzheimer’s Disease/12/2017). For questions on this or other health issues, call us at 307-635-9261 ext. 2020. Blessings! Flossie Vance, Parish Nurse
