    INTRODUCTION

I treasure Gods Word because it is alive, active, and full of powerdeeplypenetrating the human heart and changing our very lives. e Bible containsGods answers to every aspect of the human condition, telling us how much He

loves us and helping us see how He longs to be involved in our lives.

After many years of writing in prayer journalsand then discovering the joy

of listening to Jesus with pen in handI believe all of this more than ever

today. As I shared in the introduction to my first book, Jesus Calling,Ive gone

through prolonged periods of difficulty, struggle, and waiting over the courseof my life. And I have been battling Lyme disease, a debilitating illness, for

nearly a decade. However, in the midst of it all, through Gods glorious grace,

I have experienced something in my journey that outshines everything else:

I have enjoyed the Presence and Peace of Jesus. I have known the comfort of

living in awareness of His nearness.

What has made the difference? e practice of listening to Jesus and letting

Him speak to me. is practice has done more to increase my intimacy with

Him than any other spiritual discipline. And the words of assurance and

instruction that He has spoken to me over the years are what I have shared in

    my devotional books.

Jesusthe Living Wordcan speak to you directly through HisWord, just

as He has done for me. I hope the extrabiblical material in this Jesus Calling

Devotional Bible, which includes more than 250 of my writings, will help

attune the ears of your heart to His truths. To aid in this pursuit, each of my

devotionals (which appear on right-hand pages at regular intervals throughoutthis Bible) was written from Jesus point of viewas if He were speaking directly

toyou. So the first person singular (I, Me, My) always refers to Christ, and you

refers to you, the reader. I have also included Scripture references after each of

the messages. I trust that you will take time to look up those passages in this

Bibleand listen to whatever Jesus may be saying to you through His Spirit.

As I listen to God, Ive found that Bible verses or fragments of verses often

come to mind. I have woven some of them into my devotionals, where they are

printed in italics. Certain Bible verses turn up again and again in my writing as

well. at is because God often uses these powerful scriptures to strengthen

and encourage me, raising my sights from my momentary troubles to His

    eternal perspective.

As you read this devotional Bible, I encourage you to keep a journal in

which you can record any thoughts or impressions you receiveas Jesus calls

to you. I am sure you will find, as I did, that God continues to invite us to lay

down our cares, our problems, our sorrowsand seek His Presence. Scripture

also assures us that God speaks to those who will listen and that He is always

acting on our behalf. eJesus Calling Devotional Bible reinforces these ideas

in three ways: first, with call-outs from Scripture that reveal Gods never-

ending interaction and involvement in the daily lives of His people; second,

by including a variety of personalized, prayerful entries highlighting scenarios

and questions that any of us may face in our journey with God; and third, by

presenting Jesus possible responses to those situations in my corresponding

    devotionals.

Since my writings are rooted in the infallible, unchanging Word of God,

having them appear alongside the biblical text would seem to be a natural placefor them. It is an honor to have devotionals from two of my books,Jesus Calling

and Jesus Lives, included in this volume. May my written words, along with

those of the writers who contributed the personalized prayers, draw you closer

to theWord, the One who is calling out to you even now: Jesus, Immanuel

    God with us.

    1748HEBREWS4:1

OLord, how is it that You can love me with such infinite mercy and patience?I am as flawed as human beings come, and I make mistakes all the time.

Whats worse, I keep making the samemistakes that Ive always made! How can

You find it in Your heart to have compassion on me?

At times, I imagine that I will one day exhaust Your patience. And then I fear

what will happen to me. At other times, I wonder why You havent intervened

in my circumstances sooner. You have control over every situation; yet I still

suffer countless hardships that never quite seem to go away. People are more

than happy to suggest solutions, but I just shake my head; theres really nothing

    they can do.

You, on the other hand, can do it all. So I look to You, my Help and my

    Sustainer.

Please, God, Id like to understand how to navigate the turbulent times

without succumbing to the earthly desires that prey upon my weak flesh.

Whether You ever reveal the reasons for my trials, I ask that Youll enable me to

rise above them and rely on Your strength each day.

    The Promise of Rest

4 Therefore, since a promise re-mains of entering His rest, let usfear lest any of you seem to have comeshort of it. 2

    For indeed the gospel was

preached to us as well as to them; butthe word which they heard did notprofit them,a not being mixed withfaith in those who heard it. 3For we

who have believed do enter that rest,as He has said:

So I swore in My wrath, They shall not enter My rest, a

although the works were finishedfrom the foundation of the world.4

For He has spoken in a certain placeof the seventh day in this way: AndGod rested on the seventh day fromall His works;a 5and again in thisplace:They shall not enter My rest. a

    6Since therefore it remains that

some must enter it, and those towhom it was first preached did notenter because of disobedience, 7

    again

    We have become partakers

of Christ if we hold the

beginning of our confidencesteadfast to the end,

    while it is said: Today,

if you will hear His voice,

    do not harden your hearts

    as in the rebellion.

    Weakness

    I ,

I . Not only do I understandyou perfectly with all your weakness, but I have infinite resources because I am

both Man and God. When friends try to help you with your problems, their own

flaws and sinfulness can get in the way. I, on the other hand, comprend you

from both a divine, all-knowing perspective and a sinless human viewpoint.

During my thirty-three years on earth I experienced terrible temptations, and

I had to endure everything without sinningin order to be your Savior. If you

ever doubt My Love for you, just look at all I suffered so that I could spend

    eternity with you!

When you are going through painful trials, it is tempting to blame Me because

you know I have unlimited Power to intervene. However, I refrained from

using that Power to save Myself from brutal torture and execution. Whenever

I allow you to suffer, try to see it as My vote of confidence in you. Its a way of

affirming you as a member of My royal family: a co-heir with Me. Call upon Mewhen you are in the midst of trials, and I will be ever so near youentering

into your suffering. Remember that I allow you to share in My sufferings in

order that you may also share in My Glory.

    THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO

    JOHNThe Eternal Word

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, andthe Word was God. 2

He was in thebeginning with God. 3

All thingswere made through Him, and with-out Him nothing was made that was

made. 4In Him was life, and the lifewas the light of men. 5

And the lightshines in the darkness, and the dark-ness did not comprehend

    ait.

    Johns Witness: The True Light6

There was a man sent from God,whose name was John. 7

This mancame for a witness, to bear witness ofthe Light, that all through him might

believe. 8He was not that Light, but wassentto bear witness of that Light. 9That

was the true Light which gives light toevery man coming into the world.a

    10

He was in the world, and theworld was made through Him, and theworld did not know Him. 11

    He came toHis own,a

    and His own

    b

    did not receiveHim. 12

But as many as received Him,to them He gave the right to become

children of God, to those who believein His name: 13

who were born, not ofblood, nor of the will of the flesh, norof the will of man, but of God.

    The Word Becomes Flesh14

And the Word became flesh anddwelt among us, and we beheld Hisglory, the glory as of the only begottenof the Father, full of grace and truth.

15John bore witness of Him and cried

out, saying, This was He of whom I said,He who comes after me is preferred be-fore me, for He was before me.

    16

    And

    a

of His fullness we have allreceived, and grace for grace. 17

    For

the law was given through Moses, butgrace and truth came through JesusChrist. 18

No one has seen God at anytime. The only begotten Son,a

    who is

in the bosom of the Father, He hasdeclared Him.

    A Voice in the Wilderness19

Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levitesfrom Jerusalem to ask him, Who are

    you?20

He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, I am not the Christ.

    21

And they asked him, What then? Are you Elijah? He said, I am not.Are you the Prophet?

    And he answered, No.22

Then they said to him, Who areyou, that we may give an answer tothose who sent us? What do you sayabout yourself?

    23

    He said: I am

The voice of one crying in thewilderness:

Make straight the way of theLORD, a

    as the prophet Isaiah said.

    The Word became flesh

    and dwelt among us,

    and we beheld His glory,

the glory as of the only

    1535 JOHN2:224

Now those who were sent werefrom the Pharisees. 25

And they askedhim, saying, Why then do you bap-tize if you are not the Christ, nor Eli-

    jah, nor the Prophet?26

John answered them, saying, Ibaptize with water, but there standsOne among you whom you do notknow. 27

It is He who, coming after me,is preferred before me, whose sandalstrap I am not worthy to loose.

    28

These things were done in Beth-abara

    a

beyond the Jordan, where Johnwas baptizing.

    The Lamb of God29

The next day John saw Jesus com-ing toward him, and said, Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away thesin of the world! 30

This is He of whomI said, After me comes a Man who ispreferred before me, for He was beforeme. 31

I did not know Him; but that Heshould be revealed to Israel, therefore

    I came baptizing with water.32

And John bore witness, saying,I saw the Spirit descending fromheaven like a dove, and He remainedupon Him. 33

I did not know Him, butHe who sent me to baptize with watersaid to me, Upon whom you see theSpirit descending, and remaining onHim, this is He who baptizes with theHoly Spirit. 34

    And I have seen and

testified that this is the Son of God.

    The First Disciples35

Again, the next day, John stoodwith two of his disciples. 36

And look-ing at Jesus as He walked, he said,Behold the Lamb of God!

    37

The two disciples heard himspeak, and they followed Jesus. 38

ThenJesus turned, and seeing them follow-

ing, said to them, What do you seek? They said to Him, Rabbi (which

is to say, when translated, Teacher),where are You staying?

    39

He said to them, Come and see. They came and saw where He wasstaying, and remained with Him thatday (now it was about the tenth hour).

    40

One of the two who heard Johnspeak, and followed Him, was An-drew, Simon Peters brother. 41

He firstfound his own brother Simon, andsaid to him, We have found the Mes-

siah (which is translated, the Christ).42

And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him,

He said, You are Simon the son ofJonah.a

You shall be called Cephas(which is translated, A Stone).

    Philip and Nathanael43

The following day Jesus wantedto go to Galilee, and He found Philipand said to him, Follow Me. 44

NowPhilip was from Bethsaida, the cityof Andrew and Peter. 45

Philip foundNathanael and said to him, We havefound Him of whom Moses in the law,and also the prophets, wroteJesusof Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

    46

And Nathanael said to him, Cananything good come out of Naza-

reth?Philip said to him, Come and see.47

Jesus saw Nathanael coming to-ward Him, and said of him, Behold,an Israelite indeed, in whom is nodeceit!

    48

Nathanael said to Him, How doYou know me?

Jesus answered and said to him,Before Philip called you, when you

were under the fig tree, I saw you.49

Nathanael answered and said toHim, Rabbi, You are the Son of God!

You are the King of Israel!50

Jesus answered and said to him,Because I said to you, I saw you un-der the fig tree, do you believe? You

will see greater things than these.51

And He said to him, Most assured-ly, I say to you, hereafter

    a

    you shall see

heaven open, and the angels of Godascending and descending upon theSon of Man.

    1536

Jesus and His disciples were invitedto the wedding. 3

And when they ranout of wine, the mother of Jesus saidto Him, They have no wine.

    4

Jesus said to her, Woman, whatdoes your concern have to do withMe? My hour has not yet come.

    5

His mother said to the servants,Whatever He says to you, do it.

    6

Now there were set there six wa-terpots of stone, according to themanner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallonsapiece. 7

Jesus said to them, Fill the

waterpots with water. And they filledthem up to the brim. 8

And He saidto them, Draw some out now, andtake itto the master of the feast. Andthey took it.9

When the master of thefeast had tasted the water that wasmade wine, and did not know whereit came from (but the servants whohad drawn the water knew), the mas-ter of the feast called the bridegroom.10

And he said to him, Every man atthe beginning sets out the good wine, and when theguestshave well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept thegood wine until now!

    11

This beginning of signs Jesus didin Cana of Galilee, and manifestedHis glory; and His disciples believedin Him.

    12

After this He went down to Caper-naum, He, His mother, His brothers, and His disciples; and they did notstay there many days.

    Jesus Cleanses the Temple13

Now the Passover of the Jews wasat hand, and Jesus went up to Jeru-salem. 14

And He found in the templethose who sold oxen and sheep and

doves, and the money changers do-ing business. 15

When He had madea whip of cords, He drove them allout of the temple, with the sheep andthe oxen, and poured out the chan-gers money and overturned the ta-bles. 16

And He said to those who solddoves, Take these things away! Do

not make My Fathers house a houseof merchandise! 17

Then His disciplesremembered that it was written, Zealfor Your house has eaten

    a

    Me up. b

    18

So the Jews answered and said toHim, What sign do You show to us,since You do these things?

    19

Jesus answered and said to them,Destroy this temple, and in threedays I will raise it up.

    20

Then the Jews said, It has takenforty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?

    21

But He was speaking of the tem-

    ple of His body.22

    Therefore, whenHe had risen from the dead, His dis-ciples remembered that He had saidthis to them;

    a

and they believed theScripture and the word which Jesushad said.

    The Discerner of Hearts23

Now when He was in Jerusalem atthe Passover, during the feast, many

believed in His name when they sawthe signs which He did. 24

But Jesusdid not commit Himself to them, be-cause He knew all men,25and had noneed that anyone should testify ofman, for He knew what was in man.

3There was a man of the Pharisees

This man came to Jesus bynight and said to Him, Rabbi, weknow that You are a teacher comefrom God; for no one can do thesesigns that You do unless God is withhim.

    18

He who believes in Him is notcondemned; but he who does not be-lieve is condemned already, becausehe has not believed in the name of theonly begotten Son of God. 19

And thisis the condemnation, that the lighthas come into the world, and menloved darkness rather than light, be-cause their deeds were evil. 20

For ev-eryone practicing evil hates the lightand does not come to the light, lesthis deeds should be exposed. 21

    But he

who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.

    John the Baptist Exalts Christ22

After these things Jesus and Hisdisciples came into the land of Judea, and there He remained with themand baptized. 23

Now John also wasbaptizing in Aenon near Salim, be-

cause there was much water there. And they came and were baptized.24

For John had not yet been throwninto prison.

    25

Then there arose a dispute be-tween some of Johns disciples andthe Jews about purification. 26

Andthey came to John and said to him,Rabbi, He who was with you beyondthe Jordan, to whom you have testi-

fiedbehold, He is baptizing, and allare coming to Him!

    27

John answered and said, A mancan receive nothing unless it has beengiven to him from heaven. 28

You your-selves bear me witness, that I said, Iam not the Christ, but, I have beensent before Him. 29

He who has thebride is the bridegroom; but the friendof the bridegroom, who stands and

hears him, rejoices greatly because ofthe bridegrooms voice. Therefore this

joy of mine is fulfilled. 30

He must in-crease, but I mustdecrease. 31He whocomes from above is above all; he whois of the earth is earthly and speaks ofthe earth. He who comes from heavenis above all. 32

    And what He has seen

    kingdom of God. 6

That which is bornof the flesh is flesh, and that whichis born of the Spirit is spirit. 7

Do notmarvel that I said to you, You must beborn again. 8

The wind blows where itwishes, and you hear the sound of it,but cannot tell where it comes fromand where it goes. So is everyone whois born of the Spirit.

    9

Nicodemus answered and said toHim, How can these things be?

    10

Jesus answered and said to him,Are you the teacher of Israel, anddo not know these things? 11

    Most

assuredly, I say to you, We speak whatWe know and testify what We haveseen, and you do not receive Our wit-ness. 12

If I have told you earthly thingsand you do not believe, how will youbelieve if I tell you heavenly things?13

No one has ascended to heaven butHe who came down from heaven, thatis, the Son of Man who is in heaven.a

    14

And as Moses lifted up the serpent

in the wilderness, even so must theSon of Man be lifted up, 15

that who-ever believes in Him should not per-ish but

    a

    have eternal life. 16

For God soloved the world that He gave His onlybegotten Son, that whoever believesin Him should not perish but have ev-erlasting life. 17

For God did not sendHis Son into the world to condemn

For God so loved the world

    that He gave His only

    begotten Son, that whoever

    believes in Him should not

    perish but have everlasting

Idont mean to be a bother, Lord, but its been eighty-nine days and I still

havent heard anything from You in regard to my prayer. If I werent desperatefor an answer, I wouldnt keep bugging You about it. But I really need for You

    to respond.

You tell me to ask and to keep on asking like the persistent widow in Your

parable. But for how long? Another month? I dont think I can wait until then.

Should I believe what my friend believes: that Your silence means Youre

saying no? Or worse, that Your answer is no and Youre simply not telling me

for some reason? e not knowingis stressing me almost as much as the lack

    of a response!

I want to believe that You care, that You are in control, and that You hear

and answer prayer. In church the other day, the pastor talked about how our

requests and petitions are important to You. His message gave me the courage

to come to You once more.

4 Therefore, when the Lord knewthat the Pharisees had heard thatJesus made and baptized more dis-ciples than John 2

    The Whitened Harvest27

And at this point His disciplescame, and they marveled that Hetalked with a woman; yet no one said,

What do You seek? or, Why are Youtalking with her?28

The woman then left her water-pot, went her way into the city, andsaid to the men, 29

Come, see a Manwho told me all things that I ever did.Could this be the Christ? 30

Then theywent out of the city and came to Him.

    31

In the meantime His disciplesurged Him, saying, Rabbi, eat.

32But He said to them, I have food

to eat of which you do not know.33

Therefore the disciples said toone another, Has anyone broughtHim anythingto eat?

    34

Jesus said to them, My food is todo the will of Him who sent Me, andto finish His work. 35

Do you not say,There are still four months and thencomes the harvest? Behold, I say to

you, lift up your eyes and look at thefields, for they are already white forharvest! 36

And he who reaps receiveswages, and gathers fruit for eternallife, that both he who sows and he

who reaps may rejoice together. 37

Forin this the saying is true: One sowsand another reaps. 38

I sent you toreap that for which you have not la-

bored; others have labored, and youhave entered into their labors.

    The Savior of the World39

And many of the Samaritans ofthat city believed in Him because ofthe word of the woman who testi-fied, He told me all that I ever did.40

So when the Samaritans had cometo Him, they urged Him to stay with

them; and He stayed there two days.41

And many more believed becauseof His own word.

    42

Then they said to the woman,Now we believe, not because of what

you said, for we ourselves have heardHimand we know that this is indeedthe Christ,a

    the Savior of the world.

the well is deep. Where then doYou get that living water? 12

Are Yougreater than our father Jacob, whogave us the well, and drank from ithimself, as well as his sons and hislivestock?

    13

Jesus answered and said to her,Whoever drinks of this water willthirst again, 14

but whoever drinks ofthe water that I shall give him willnever thirst. But the water that I shallgive him will become in him a fountainof water springing up into everlastinglife.

    15

    16

Jesus said to her, Go, call yourhusband, and come here.

    17

The woman answered and said, Ihave no husband.

Jesus said to her, You have wellsaid, I have no husband, 18

for youhave had five husbands, and the one

whom you now have is not your hus-band; in that you spoke truly.19

The woman said to Him, Sir, Iperceive that You are a prophet. 20

Ourfathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalemis the place where one ought to wor-ship.

    21

Jesus said to her, Woman, be-lieve Me, the hour is coming when

you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Fa-ther. 22

You worship what you do notknow; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23

But thehour is coming, and now is, whenthe true worshipers will worship theFather in spirit and truth; for theFather is seeking such to worshipHim. 24

    God isSpirit, and those who

    called in Hebrew, Bethesda,a

    havingfive porches. 3

In these lay a greatmultitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving ofthe water. 4

For an angel went downat a certain time into the pool andstirred up the water; then whoeverstepped in first, after the stirring ofthe water, was made well of whateverdisease he had.a

    5

Now a certain manwas there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. 6

When Jesus saw him ly-ing there, and knew that he alreadyhad been in that condition a long

time, He said to him, Do you want tobe made well?7

The sick man answered Him, Sir,I have no man to put me into the pool

when the water is stirred up; but whileI am coming, another steps downbefore me.

    8

Jesus said to him, Rise, take upyour bed and walk. 9

And immedi-ately the man was made well, took up

his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath.

    10

The Jews therefore said to him whowas cured, It is the Sabbath; it is notlawful for you to carry your bed.

    11

He answered them, He whomade me well said to me, Take up

    your bed and walk. 12

Then they asked him, Who is theMan who said to you, Take up your

bed and walk? 13But the one whowas healed did not know who it was,for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitudebeing in thatplace. 14Afterward Jesusfound him in the temple, and said tohim, See, you have been made well.Sin no more, lest a worse thing comeupon you.

    him well.

Now after the two days He de-parted from there and went to Gal-ilee. 44

    For Jesus Himself testified

that a prophet has no honor in hisown country. 45

When he heard that Jesushad come out of Judea into Galilee,he went to Him and implored Himto come down and heal his son, forhe was at the point of death. 48

    The Fourfold Witness31

If I bear witness of Myself, Mywitness is not true. 32

    18

Therefore the Jews sought allthe more to kill Him, because Henot only broke the Sabbath, but alsosaid that God was His Father, makingHimself equal with God. 19

Then Jesusanswered and said to them, Most as-suredly, I say to you, the Son can donothing of Himself, but what He seesthe Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.20

For the Father loves the Son, andshows Him all things that He Himself

does; and He will show Him greaterworks than these, that you may mar-vel. 21

For as the Father raises the deadand gives life to them, even so the Songives life to whom He will. 22

For theFather judges no one, but has com-mitted all judgment to the Son, 23

thatall should honor the Son just as theyhonor the Father. He who does nothonor the Son does not honor the

    Father who sent Him.

Life and Judgment Are Throughthe Son

    24

Most assuredly, I say to you, hewho hears My word and believes inHim who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.25

Most assuredly, I say to you, the

hour is coming, and now is, whenthe dead will hear the voice of theSon of God; and those who hear willlive. 26

For as the Father has life inHimself, so He has granted the Son tohave life in Himself, 27

and has givenHim authority to execute judgmentalso, because He is the Son of Man.28

Do not marvel at this; for the hour

is coming in which all who are in thegraves will hear His voice 29

and comeforththose who have done good, tothe resurrection of life, and those whohave done evil, to the resurrection ofcondemnation. 30

I can of Myself donothing. As I hear, I judge; and My

judgment is righteous, because I donot seek My own will but the will ofthe Father who sent Me.

Then the sea arose becausea great wind was blowing. 19

So whenthey had rowed about three or fourmiles,a

they saw Jesus walking on the

sea and drawing near the boat; andthey were afraid. 20

But He said tothem, It is I; do not be afraid. 21

Thenthey willingly received Him into theboat, and immediately the boat was atthe land where they were going.

    The Bread from Heaven22

On the following day, when thepeople who were standing on theother side of the sea saw that there

was no other boat there, except thatone which His disciples had entered,a

and that Jesus had not entered theboat with His disciples, but His dis-ciples had gone away alone 23

how-ever, other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate breadafter the Lord had given thanks24

when the people therefore saw thatJesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and cameto Capernaum, seeking Jesus. 25

Andwhen they found Him on the otherside of the sea, they said to Him,Rabbi, when did You come here?

    26

Jesus answered them and said,Most assuredly, I say to you, you seekMe, not because you saw the signs,

but because you ate of the loavesand were filled. 27

Do not labor forthe food which perishes, but for thefood which endures to everlasting life,

which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set Hisseal on Him.

    28

Then they said to Him, Whatshall we do, that we may work the

    works of God?29

Jesus answered and said to them,This is the work of God, that you be-lieve in Him whom He sent.

    30

Therefore they said to Him, Whatsign will You perform then, that wemay see it and believe You? What

    work will You do? 31

    Our fathers ate

    who were diseased. 3

And Jesus wentup on the mountain, and there He sat

    with His disciples.4

Now the Passover, a feast of theJews, was near. 5

Then Jesus lifted upHiseyes, and seeing a great multitudecoming toward Him, He said to Philip,Where shall we buy bread, that thesemay eat? 6

But this He said to testhim, for He Himself knew what He

    would do.7

Philip answered Him, Two hun-dred denarii worth of bread is notsufficient for them, that every one ofthem may have a little.

    8

One of His disciples, Andrew, Si-mon Peters brother, said to Him,9

There is a lad here who has fivebarley loaves and two small fish, but

what are they among so many?10

Then Jesus said, Make the peoplesit down. Now there was much grassin the place. So the men sat down, innumber about five thousand. 11

    And

Jesus took the loaves, and when Hehad given thanks He distributed themto the disciples, and the disciples

    a

to those sitting down; and likewiseof the fish, as much as they wanted.12

So when they were filled, He saidto His disciples, Gather up the frag-ments that remain, so that nothing islost. 13

Therefore they gathered themup, and filled twelve baskets with the

fragments of the five barley loaveswhich were left over by those whohad eaten. 14

Then those men, whenthey had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, This is truly the Prophet who isto come into the world.

    Jesus Walks on the Sea15

Therefore when Jesus perceivedthat they were about to come andtake Him by force to make Him king,He departed again to the mountain byHimself alone.

the Father, except He who is fromGod; He has seen the Father. 47

Mostassuredly, I say to you, he who be-lieves in Me

    a

    has everlasting life. 48

Iam the bread of life. 49

    Your fathers

ate the manna in the wilderness, andare dead. 50

This is the bread whichcomes down from heaven, that onemay eat of it and not die. 51

I am theliving bread which came down fromheaven. If anyone eats of this bread,he will live forever; and the bread thatI shall give is My flesh, which I shallgive for the life of the world.

    52

The Jews therefore quarreledamong themselves, saying, How canthis Man give us Hisflesh to eat?

    53

Then Jesus said to them, Mostassuredly, I say to you, unless you eatthe flesh of the Son of Man and drinkHis blood, you have no life in you.54

Whoever eats My flesh and drinksMy blood has eternal life, and I willraise him up at the last day. 55

    For My

This is the bread which camedown from heavennot as your fa-thers ate the manna, and are dead. He

who eats this bread will live forever.59

These things He said in the syna-gogue as He taught in Capernaum.

    Many Disciples Turn Away60

Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, This is ahard saying; who can understand it?

    61

When Jesus knew in Himself thatHis disciples complained about this,He said to them, Does this offend

you? 62What then if you should seethe Son of Man ascend where He wasbefore? 63

It is the Spirit who gives life;the flesh profits nothing. The wordsthat I speak to you are spirit, and theyare life. 64

But there are some of youwho do not believe. For Jesus knew

the manna in the desert; as it is writ-ten, He gave them bread from heavento eat. a

    32

Then Jesus said to them, Mostassuredly, I say to you, Moses did notgive you the bread from heaven, butMy Father gives you the true breadfrom heaven. 33

For the bread of Godis He who comes down from heavenand gives life to the world.

    34

Then they said to Him, Lord, giveus this bread always.

    35

And Jesus said to them, I am thebread of life. He who comes to Me

shall never hunger, and he who be-lieves in Me shall never thirst. 36

But Isaid to you that you have seen Me and

    yet do not believe. 37

All that the Fathergives Me will come to Me, and the one

who comes to Me I will by no meanscast out. 38

For I have come down fromheaven, not to do My own will, but the

will of Him who sent Me. 39

This is thewill of the Father who sent Me, that

of all He has given Me I should losenothing, but should raise it up at thelast day. 40

And this is the will of Himwho sent Me, that everyone who seesthe Son and believes in Him may haveeverlasting life; and I will raise him upat the last day.

    Rejected by His Own41

    The Jews then complained

about Him, because He said, I amthe bread which came down fromheaven. 42

And they said, Is not thisJesus, the son of Joseph, whose fatherand mother we know? How is it thenthat He says, I have come down fromheaven?

    43

Jesus therefore answered andsaid to them, Do not murmur among

    yourselves. 44

No one can come to Meunless the Father who sent Me drawshim; and I will raise him up at the lastday. 45

It is written in the prophets,And they shall all be taught by God.

not openly, but as it were in secret.11

Then the Jews sought Him at thefeast, and said, Where is He? 12

Andthere was much complaining amongthe people concerning Him. Some

said, He is good; others said, No,on the contrary, He deceives the peo-ple. 13

However, no one spoke openlyof Him for fear of the Jews.

    14

Now about the middle of the feastJesus went up into the temple andtaught. 15

And the Jews marveled, say-ing, How does this Man know letters, having never studied?

    16

    Jesus

    a

answered them and said,My doctrine is not Mine, but Hiswho sent Me. 17

If anyone wills to doHis will, he shall know concerning thedoctrine, whether it is from God orwhetherI speak on My own authority.18

He who speaks from himself seekshis own glory; but He who seeks theglory of the One who sent Him is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him.19

Did not Moses give you the law, yetnone of you keeps the law? Why doyou seek to kill Me?

    20

The people answered and said,You have a demon. Who is seekingto kill You?

    21

Jesus answered and said to them,I did one work, and you all marvel.22

Moses therefore gave you circumci-sion (not that it is from Moses, but

from the fathers), and you circumcisea man on the Sabbath. 23

If a man re-ceives circumcision on the Sabbath,so that the law of Moses should notbe broken, are you angry with Mebecause I made a man completely

    well on the Sabbath? 24

Do not judgeaccording to appearance, but judge

    with righteous judgment.

    Could This Be the Christ?25

Now some of them from Jerusa-lem said, Is this not He whom theyseek to kill? 26

But look! He speaksboldly, and they say nothing to Him.Do the rulers know indeed that this istruly

    a

    However, we know

from the beginning who they werewho did not believe, and who wouldbetray Him. 65

And He said, There-fore I have said to you that no onecan come to Me unless it has beengranted to him by My Father.

    66

From that time many of His dis-ciples went back and walked withHim no more. 67

Then Jesus said to thetwelve, Do you also want to go away?

    68

But Simon Peter answered Him,Lord, to whom shall we go? You havethe words of eternal life. 69

Also we havecome to believe and know that You arethe Christ, the Son of the living God.

    a

    70

Jesus answered them, Did I notchoose you, the twelve, and one of

    you is a devil? 71

He spoke of JudasIscariot, the son of Simon, for it washe who would betray Him, being oneof the twelve.

For noone does anything in secret while hehimself seeks to be known openly. If

You do these things, show Yourself tothe world. 5

be as done with hearing Im sorry as I am.

You are such a holy Godone who despises sin. I guess thats why Im not
