Our First Bling, Bubby and Blessings Gala has Passed but

Oh, What Memories!!!

The first joint NAMI SWI & Furry Friends Recovery (FFR) Gala was held on November 18th at the Villa Marie Winery in Maryville, IL. What a grand success! We had 240 guests in attendance, fourteen big live auction items 157 silent auction baskets/items, 12 jewelry giveaways, six different kinds of wine to choose from or soda (included with ticket), sweet treats, heavy hors d’oeuvres, and an infinite amount of fun for all!! Our emcee and auctioneer for the evening was Peggy Ladd. Peggy is also on the board of United Way with whom NAMI SWI and FFR are proud members of. There were information tables with NAMI SWI & FFR chocked full of their information and pamphlets. Music was provided by Buffalo Road Acoustic. There were video testimonials from Donna Sheard and Theresa San Luis with NAMI SWI and one from Tricia Hogan with FFR. So many folks helped make this a success---where do we start saying thank you? Here goes…We’d like to thank the staff and volunteers who put a tremendous amount of work, love, and effort into this huge undertaking. With that being said, a great big thank you goes out to the Gala Committee: Laura Klein, Jessica Gruneich, Tricia Hogan, Marie Krysnoski, Vicki Short, Vickey Gonzalez, and Karen Mavers. Special thanks to NAMI member Cathy Schultz for helping with so many silent auction items. Thank you board of directors and members who participated in ticket sales and getting the word out. What great team work!!! A shout out to the FFR Board and volunteers, again, great team work! Peggy then introduced Laura Klein, Senior Executive Director, of Touchstone Crystal by Swarovski. The ball room glistened with bling thanks to Laura who shared about what NAMI SWI means to her. She graciously called the Gala Committee forward and gave them an appropriate piece of Touchstone Jewelry, “the heart & key” because they gave their hearts and were the key to this fabulous and meaningful night! Laura was also amazingly generous in helping to secure many of the live auction items, it was an honor and privilege working with Laura! Next, Peggy introduced NAMI National 2nd Vice President and NAMI SWI Treasurer, Vickey Gonzalez. Vickey shared with the crowd she was a very successful real estate broker and then was hit with a mental illness. She explained how NAMI literally “saved her life”. Since then Vickey became a full-time advocate for NAMI and is an inspiration to all who know her. There were raffle tables for Touchstone Crystal jewelry. Laura Klein not only donated jewelry giveaways for the event but she also was a 1K Sponsor and live auction donor. She helped inspire the theme of “Bling, Bubbly and Blessings.” Her husband Doug Klein of Klein’s Brand Source in Fairview Heights was a live auction donor. What great advocates!! Bake Shop; Chestnut Health Systems; Steven and Barbara Iborg; Business & Professional Women’s Foundation Metro East Club;

_________

What is Stigma? Why is It a Problem?

Stigma is when someone, or even you yourself, views a person in a negative way just because they have a mental health condition. Some people describe stigma as a feeling of shame or judgement from someone else. Stigma can even come from an internal place, confusing feeling bad with being bad. Why does being StigmaFree matter? If you aren’t sure, it's time to learn more. The perception of mental illness won’t change if we don’t act to change it. Talk about mental health conditions and find out how you can make a difference to support others. The StigmaFree campaign is NAMI’s effort to end stigma and create hope for those affected by mental illness. Through powerful words and actions, we can shift the social and systemic barriers for those living with mental health conditions. Learn more about stigma and “Take the StigmaFree Pledge”.

The website, “That’s My Pan”, sells cake & pie pans, cookie tins, cutting boards, just to name a few of the items. They even have pet products! Here’s the link: www.thatsmypan.biz/sweets4nami_eff. Besides Lynn, Harold is survived by two sons: William and his wife, Andrea, of Tacoma, Washington; Carl of Edwardsville; and one daughter Heather and her husband, David Fellabaum, from Carmel, Indiana. Harold also has six grandchildren. Lynn, please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

A walk through the park On a blazing day.

People travel through the trails Just like floating down a river

It’s hot out, and so are you People turn, and are on fire

The fire from deep inside your mind A fire that doesn’t burn, but leaves a sting

Ashes fall like pouring rain On a hot summer day But are cleared away by a cool breeze

Where is it coming from You see a beautiful woman That looks like an angel She’s standing by the lake of fire That everyone else is burning in

The woman is not scorched And for a moment you’re not either You want to feel more of the cool breeze So come closer

She whispers into the day, come fly with me Come fly over the burning souls That we will leave behind to burst

We fly to the mountain tops And over the clouds Into that secret place that she knows of Land of the goddesses

Beautiful and cool as she is The angels fly over the lake To see the unhappy soul

She turns ashes into a cool breeze And the fire into a cool mist The people are free from the burning Free as they want to be on a mid-day dream _____________

A Message from NAMI SWI President,

Beverley Watkins, PhD, LCSW

Beverley Watkins, Ph.D., LCSW President, NAMI Southwestern IL

November 14, 2017

By the time this article is published in the newsletter, the first ever NAMI SWI gala/fundraiser, “Bling, Bubbly, and Blessings”, cosponsored by Furry Friend Recovery, will be behind us. We will likely be basking in the success of it all! In this final week of preparations, all is coming together, thanks to the hard work of Jessica Gruneich, Tricia Hogan, Marie Krysnoski, Vicki Short, Vickey Gonzalez, and Karen Mavers. Special thanks to NAMI Member Cathy Schultz for assisting in helping with the gala planning and silent auction. The gala was a huge undertaking and a huge amount of work, love, and effort was put into it by staff and by volunteers. Board directors and members have participated in ticket sales and getting the word out. Thanks to all who donated auction items and services – so much variety! Thanks to Julie Weeman and staff from Villa Maria Winery in Maryville, IL. Special thank you goes out to Laura Klein, Senior Executive Director of Touchstone Crystal by Swarovski, who donated jewelry giveaways for the event. She also is a 1K Sponsor and helped inspire the theme of “Bling, Bubbly and Blessings.” On November 6th, NAMI SWI did a Tuning Out Stigma presentation and panel discussion at Greenville University. Theresa San Luis gave an amazing presentation of her music and personal story of recovery. Panel members included Jen Gerlach, Sr. Linda Hylla, Vickey Gonzalez, Sonja Vauters, and me; Jessica Gruneich moderated the panel. Theresa San Luis did her Tuning Out Stigma presentation at SIUE on October 10th along with a panel discussion which included Herbert Lomax, Julie Swogger, Donna Sheard, and Sonja Vauters; and moderated by Jessica. Both events were well attended by students and other members of the university communities. A special thanks to the psychology student organizations who were our on-campus sponsors and provided a warm welcome and did a great job of coordinating between NAMI and the universities. Thanks to Kris Gamm-Smith, George Smith, Sylvia Morisette, and Jessica Gruneich, who did our first Provider Education presentation in Bloomington, IL at the Statewide Veterans Educational Summit on September 27th-29th. Thanks, Kris, George, Sylvia, and Jess for a great job and launch of Provider!! Mary Gruneich is to lead Family to Family Education Teacher Training in Champaign, IL on November 18 th-20th. So proud that one of our own NAMI SWI members is training on the state level and is training future teachers of Family to Family. Thank you, Julie Boker and Cortnie Stone, for teaching our latest Family to Family class. Thanks to Cathy Knowlton and Donna Sheard for teaching Basics Education beginning January 25, 2018. Donations for Warm Winter Wishes of warm clothing such as hats, gloves, and sweats are being accepted through December20th. Such an exciting time for NAMI SWI ... I say that a lot, LOL! Please consider an end-of-year financial donation to our affiliate to help us continue to provide programming to our communities. Thanks to all who have made this a great year for NAMI SWI. Our staff, Jessica, Marie, and Kami have done an amazing job this year. A special shout-out to you ladies for expanding programs, fundraising, and advocacy for individuals and families. Our communications team, Sandy and Tom Giger, Marie Krysnoski, Mary Gauen, Donna Sheard, Fabi Clubb, Ann Barnum, Tai Prohaska, and Kalin Pearce – you guys are so dedicated and have done so much to get our message out there. It’s been a great you. Thank you all.

Alternatives Conference

by Vickey Gonzalez, NAMI SWI Treasure and

NAMI National 2nd Vice President In August, I was fortunate to go to a Convention called the Alternatives

Conference. It was held in Boston this year. Alternatives is unique in that it is only for people with mental health conditions. I met many peers from all over the country who had other life conditions; such as being deaf or blind. There were peers who had service dogs and the Lesbian Bisexual Gay Transgender Queer/Questioning (LBGTQ) community attended as well, as it was very diverse. The Conference was sponsored by Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and was held at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel. The workshops and presentations were wonderful and the keynote speakers were very inspiring. They included Patrick Kennedy, son of Senator Ted Kennedy, who has a dual diagnosis of Bi-Polar and Alcoholism. Another speaker was Dr. Kay Jamison, a Psychiatrist and author of many books, who also has Bi-Polar disorder. The Conference was attended by about 3,000 peers. It was wonderful to connect with as many people as I could. I made sure to talk to anyone and everyone! The one thing I took away from the whole experience was that recovery is possible and connecting with your peers is so important because “we make each other better”! If you would like to attend next year’s conference, there will be scholarships given out by SAMHSA. First-timers have a better chance of receiving the scholarships. For more information, please contact me by email at [email protected]

Congratulations to NAMI SWI Board Member Angela Townsend who accepted the position of 2nd Vice President at the

November 14th Board Meeting. Thank you, Angela, for your dedication to NAMI SWI.

IT’S BAAACK… by Marie Krysnoski,

NAMI SWI Associate Director Last year was our first attempt at Glo Bingo with a silent auction. We weren’t sure how it would go over. Well, we had more of the attendees tell us how much fun they had and really hoped we’d have another one. Some were asking “when’s the next Glo Bingo?” Others said to be sure and let them know when we have another Glo Bingo. So, spread the word, NAMI SWI 2nd Glo Bingo will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2018. By that time, folks should be recouped from the holiday celebrations and ready to get out again!! So mark your calendars and tell your friends. Get a group of your friends and family together and plan on having a blast of a time. The 2017 Glo Bingo was held in Madison County, but since NAMI SWI encompasses a 12-county catchment area, the 2018 event will be held in St. Clair County. It will be held at the Moose Lodge #1221 in Swansea. We will have the silent auction again and 50/50 drawing. Drinks and food can be purchased at the Moose Hall, but you may bring your own snacks. Mark your calendar now and tell your friends. No work for you, just plain ole fun!!! I will start taking reservations after the new year, so keep my number handy so you can give me a call at (618) 558-7938 after we all get through the holidays. Since this is the last newsletter before the Glo Bingo, more information and any updates can be found on our website or Facebook page. I will be waiting to hear from you after January 1st. Guaranteed a great time!!!

(Editor’s Note: More details on Page 13.)

____________

Tuning Out Stigma

So more info to come. Check the NAMI SWI website and Facebook page for more information or you may call the NAMI Office. ________________

Home for the Holidays

by NAMI SWI Member Cathy Schultz

Jingle Bells, Snowflakes on my nose. Hot Chocolate and baked cookie smells This joyous Season is supposed.

Instead I feel, this Season is not real. Not with you gone, My Dearest One. How my heart aches as I look back Upon my mistakes of taking you for granted.

I'll never get over losing you. Because you were my Rock In which my heart was planted!

Now this holiday season, I crave for our Joy, Peace, and Goodwill. I'd love to talk with you still, Like warm hearts do in Wintry Chill.

It seems I have no one to understand No one to hug or hold my hand. Oh, how I long for you to be Home for the Holidays!

In this stillness, I found God's Amazing Grace. In His Presence, I receive His Peace, I still miss you. I can get through, Though my pain is not erased.

For what is Christmas without Christ? A newborn babe announced by angels, Guided wise men by a star? New HOPE for this old, worn soul Out of touch and Oh, so far.

In memory and celebration of your life I light a candle and watch the flickering flame Burn away all regret and vaporize self-blame.

For Jesus' birth has kindled New Light. The dancing flame celebrates your name; As I sit here and stare And realize Jesus is Here.

And you...Well You are Home for the Holidays And I am cradled in His Amazing Grace. Until it's time to re-unite

Once again to see the Light On your beautiful, smiling face. I love and miss you-

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays For I Know, you are Home for the Holidays…
