Welcome to Westminster

Whether you are worshiping at Westminster for the first time or returning for a visit, the pastors and members sincerely welcome you in the name of Christ. Following our worship service, we invite you to meet an Ambassador at the back of the sanctuary. We have a gift for you, and would like to share information regarding our many programs for children, youth and adults. An Ambassador can guide you to the hospitality area to enjoy fellowship or lead you on a tour of the church. We hope you will make Westminster your church home and discover ways to grow in faith.

Children are welcome in worship! Westminster’s Kids’ Notes and worship bags are available each Sunday from the ushers. Kids’ Notes, a weekly companion to Westminster’s morning worship, emphasizes listening and seeing during worship. The bags include storybooks for children of all ages, coloring paper and crayons, a children’s bulletin for those age three to six, and bookmarks for hymns and Scripture.

Worship Aids - Large print Presbyterian Hymnals and hearing devices may be obtained from an usher. If you experience a problem with a hearing device, ask an usher for a new one.

Audio tapes and DVD’s of recent Westminster worship services are available. Please use the sign-out sheet when you borrow them from the front desk. Printed sermons are available on the literature tables the following week and on our website at www.wpc.org.

The next celebration of the Lord’s Supper will be Maundy Thursday, April 9, and at the Sunrise service on Easter Sunday.

Baptisms - If you wish to schedule a baptism, please contact Suzie Hurlock (302) 654-5214, ext. 127.

The flowers in the sanctuary today are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Nick Marcopulos from Cathy Higgins.

The rosebud at the side of the pulpit this morning is in celebration of the birth of Nya Li Parker, born March 13, 2009, daughter of Katie Stoffer, and granddaughter of Judy and Paul Stoffer. We welcome this child into the Westminster family.

Sanctuary Flowers - Consider giving the sanctuary flowers for Sunday worship. Your gift of God’s natural beauty to remember or honor loved ones, or to celebrate an event, expresses praise and thanksgiving to God. Please contact Linda Watson during business hours at 302-571-6719or [email protected].

Blue Offertory Card - What is it? Where is it? What do I do with it? Each Sunday the offering plate is passed as a way for worshippers to give thanks to God by placing a financial contribution in the plate. In addition making a financial contribution, you may wish to offer another kind of gift. These blue cards in the pew racks are a tangible way of expressing a commitment to offer service, pray for others, give thanks or make a special financial offering. There is a place for your name if you wish to be contacted. We hope this will enhance your worship experience and help you become a stronger disciple of Christ.

Are you wearing a nametag? It is always a friendly gesture to do so here at Westminster. Whether you are a longtime member or new to the church, wearing a nametag allows others the opportunity to meet you, greet you by name, and become more familiar with others at church. Nametags and markers are available in baskets at all major entrances. Do not assume everyone knows who you are. Extend hospitality, kindness and friendship by wearing a nametag every Sunday.

The deadline for the Sunday bulletin and the “Westminster Weekly Word” is Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.Send announcements and articles for any of the publications to [email protected].

ORDER OF WORSHIP AT 9:00 A.M.

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIPLiving Christ, your earthly ministry was full of struggle, as well as joy; yet you were faithful in following God’s will. Breathe your Spirit into our lives, that we may never fall back from the way of discipleship or the effort of loving. Grant that we may find true joy and peace as we accept the cost of faithful discipleship. Amen. (Ruth C. Duck, Bread for the Journey)

CALL TO CONFESSIONGod does not give us a spirit of cowardice,

but seeks to inspire in us courage, determination and hope.Let us confess our reluctance to be bold.

PRAYER OF CONFESSIONMighty God, we yearn to deepen our faith, but the cross is too threatening for us.We seek comfort, not sacrifice;we embrace privilege, not pain.Yet the suffering love of Christ touches us deeply. We yearn to be faithful to you, but we are weak and afraid.Grant us strength and courage, O God,in order that we may become genuine disciples of Christ.

OFFERTORY ANTHEM “Beneath the Cross of Jesus” arr. Dale Wood

Beneath the cross of Jesus Upon the cross of Jesus,I long to take my stand; my eye at times can seeThe shadow of a mighty rock The very dying form of onewithin a weary land, who suffered there for me.A home within a wilderness, And from my contrite heart, with tears,a rest upon the way, two wonders I confess:From the burning of the noontide heat The wonder of his glorious loveand burdens of the day. And my unworthiness.

I take, O cross, your shadowfor my abiding place;

ADULT EDUCATION CLASSESToday, 10:10 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Holy Adventure Leader: Greg Jones, through May 3, excluding March 29, in Classroom 6. Using the book, Holy Adventure by Bruce Epperly, we will discuss ways for us to embrace life as the adventure God wants us to experience no matter what our age is. Holy Adventure is an alternative to Rick Warren’s book, The Purpose Driven Life. Warren (and the older vision of Christianity) believes that God determined a plan for your life previous to your existence and your job is to figure out God’s plan. Epperly, (and the emerging vision of Christianity) believes that your life is a holy adventure in which you are partners with God in shaping who you will become and what the universe will become. Our study together will not only focus on our understanding of God, but will include practical activities designed to help you become more aware of God’s presence in your life and the daily possibilities for personal transformation and the healing of our world. Class participants will need to purchase the book, Holy Adventure. Copies of the book will be available at the class for $12.

“This I Believe” Leaders: Anne Ledbetter and Janet Steinwedel, concludes today, in Meeting Room. As people of faith we stand and say what we believe each Sunday in worship. Yet each of us holds particular, individual beliefs at our very core – beliefs which affect our daily lives and which we seek to embody each day. Using podcasts from the award-winning NPR program “This I Believe,” we will listen to essays by contemporary women and men, and ponder the message of each one. Through reading, listening, discussing, and journaling we will reflect on our own beliefs and finally write our own personal “This I Believe” essay.

Parents with Young Children Coordinator: Rick Thomas, Sunday mornings, Ruth Christie Room. Today Yvonne Nass, Parent Education consultant, Certified Family Counselor and Delaware Level II Parent Educator, leads discussions on topics of special interest to parents with young children.

“The Search for Joy: C.S. Lewis, His Life and His Christian Faith.” This series about the author of the Chronicles of Narnia goes through May 17, in the Daughtry House Classroom across 13th Street. Due to the length of today’s video, we will start promptly at 10:10 a.m. As a teenager C.S. Lewis was a proclaimed atheist. But at the age of 33, he became a Christian. His friendship with JRR Tolkien, of Lord of the Rings fame, was a primary catalyst in his conversion. This is a powerful video series that looks at the man, his life, his writings, his friends and his faith – which brought him great joy. Senior High School students are welcome.

Reflect on the Crucifixion of Christ by walking a labyrinth or through silent prayer and meditation. The labyrinth will be available in Rodney Chapeland the Sanctuary will be open for silent prayer

from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

The labyrinth is a path of prayer, a walking meditation that can become a mirror of the soul. The labyrinth has one single path that meanders in a circuitous way from the entry to the center and back out again. The labyrinth is not a maze. A maze is designed for you to lose your way; a labyrinth is designed for you to find your way. (Jill Geoffrion, Praying the Labyrinth.)

July 27 – 31, 2009

Please remember in your prayers:

Those recently hospitalized include Charles Reeder.

Westminster’s homebound family who can no longer attend worship with us. Send a card, say a prayer, visit! This week we ask you to remember Louisa Morse, Apartment 340, Forwood Manor, 1912 Marsh Road, Wilmington, DE 19810 and Peg Hanby, c/o Jeanette Perkins, 242 Waverly Road, Wilmington, DE 19803.

Our brothers and sisters in global mission: Sue Makin, MD, Malawi; Delle McCormick, Southwest Border; Roger and Gloria Marriott, Dennis and Maribel Smith and the Mam Presbytery, Guatamala; Timothee Kalonji Matadi, Cecilé de Sweemer, MD, Pastor Jean-Marc Katujudi Nkuna and members of the Kamulumba-Ditalala Parish, Congo; Rev. Dr. Lyle and Terry Dykstra, PCUSA Mission Volunteers, Presbyterian University, Kenya. They are praying for us; let us also pray for them.

Pray for those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan often seem very far away and it is easy to forget that Americans, Iraqis, Afghans and coalition forces continue to die. As Christians, we are called to pray for an end to violence, and for the spreading of God’s kingdom of peace and justice. It is also important for us to remember in prayer the families who grieve the loss of their loved ones who have died in these wars. The number of Americans serving in our Armed Forces who have died in these two wars is 4,263(as of April 2.) The number of Iraqis and Afghans who have been killed is many times greater, but no agreed upon number exists. Those Americans who have died most recently are:

Lieutenant Florence B. Choe, age 35, of El Cajon, California, died March 27Lieutenant (junior grade) Francis L. Toner, IV, age 26, of Narragansett, Rhode Island, died March 27Staff Sergeant Raphael A. Futrell, age 26, of Anderson, South Carolina, died March 25

Pray for those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. If there is someone in your family who is serving in Iraq or Afghanistan please call or email Maureen Ogden (302-654-5214 ext. 126 or [email protected]) with his or her name so that we can put the name on a prayer list.

Westminster’s Covenant Prayer Group is committed to praying weekly for specific needs of the faith community. Anyone with prayer requests may leave a confidential message on 302-654-5848, ext. 335, or fill out a prayer request card (in the pew pocket) and place it in the offering plate.

A Centering Prayer time occurs every Thursday at noon in the Ruth Christie Room. Anyone is welcome to participate. Basically, those who come spend thirty minutes in silence. Sometimes we have sacred music playing in the background. Silence allows us time and space to empty our minds, quiet our brains’ chatter, and be still and attentive to God.

If you have come to worship with a heavy heart – worried or confused, anxious or grieving, hurting or fearful about something in your life – a Stephen Minister is available to meet with you following the service and to offer compassionate support. Just go to the piano in the sanctuary at the conclusion of the service, and someone with a Stephen Minister nametag will be there to speak with you.

All hands on deck! Or at least in the kitchen to help with the Easter Breakfast. Volunteers are needed for kitchen prep work, decorating and setting tables this Saturday, 9:00 - 11:00 a.m., and for kitchen duty, serving and cleaning up this Sunday. There are three Sunday shifts: 7:00 – 8:50 a.m., 8:45 – 10:15 a.m., and 10:10 – 11:30 a.m. (If you are helping with kitchen prep work on Saturday, please bring your own paring knife from home.) Easter Egg Hunt Easter Sunday. Please join us Easter morning between services for the annual Easter Egg Hunt! All Westminster children (second grade and under) are invited to participate in this fun-filled tradition. We hunt eggs each year because they remind us of God’s Easter surprise to the women who went to the tomb and found it empty! Join us in Classroom 6 at 10:10 a.m. Easter Sunday. We’ll make a ‘basket’ and then look for surprises outside.

Yoga classes are held in Rodney Chapel each week Mondays (noon – 1 p.m.), Thursdays (5:30 – 6:40 p.m.) and Saturdays (10 – 11 a.m.) Yoga benefits the body, mind, and spirit. Wear comfortable clothing, bring a mat, and join us. Suggested donation is $10 to cover costs of instructor and building use, but pay as you are able.

Samaritans once again need furniture, especially beds. We have outstanding requests from people in need of furniture. If you have anything you can donate please call John Bowman at 984-1181 or email him at [email protected].

Join the Phix-It Corps! Twice a month a dedicated group of volunteers meet at the Church to help “Phix” things. This group is a major reason the Church property is so well maintained. We rely on them to attend to all those small items that left alone can become big headaches. The jobs vary from light to heavy and everything in between. The ministry is one of fellowship, fun and accomplishment. Please consider joining this small group on the second and fourth Thursdays of every month at 8:30 am. If you have any questions, please contact Jeff Lippincott at home 302-655-9080, on his cell 302-494-2830, or by email at [email protected].

Knit with a Cause. Be a part of our knitting fellowship at church to knit prayer shawls for members of our congregation and wool helmet liners for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our soldiers need these liners to make the helmets absorbent and more comfortable. Each knitter provides his/her own materials. Then, come to Grace Hall on Friday evening April 24, at 7 pm to see the award winning film “FLOW” – which describes the rapidly growing water crisis on both a human and a global scale and addresses the difficult question: “Can anyone really own water?”

Would you like to take the spiritual journey of a lifetime?

Bring to life the Gospels by walking where Jesus walked. Israel/Palestine is truly remarkable. Join others from around the world to live and study at St. George's College, just outside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem. We will have faculty instruction and then visit Nazareth, Masada, the Dead Sea, Bethlehem, and Galilee and many more sites from both the Old and New Testaments. We will also learn of current challenges that this part of the world faces. The cost ($2180) includes the course instruction, room, all meals, transportation and fees to all the sites. Airfare and ground transportation to the college is not covered, but we will help you arrange it.   If you would like to join Greg and Camilla Jones for this spiritual and educational pilgrimage from November 3-16, please contact her at 302-421-9249 or [email protected]. There are five spots available.

Dear Friends of West Church,

West Presbyterian Church will be closing its doors for the last time on Wednesday April, 29, 2009. This is a sad time for us, but it is also a joyful one as we are confident that we have done what God has called us to do and have completed our mission. We have been a committed people and have been good stewards of what we have been given.

The congregation has chosen to celebrate and honor our faithful one hundred and forty years of Mission and Ministry by having a worship service of music and scripture led by former pastors of West Church. We hope you will plan to join us in our Service of Celebration on Sunday, April 19 at 3:00 p.m. and will share this information with anyone whom you feel may want to attend.

“For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.” Jeremiah 29:11

With God’s Grace,

The Session of West Presbyterian Church
