Stewardship

The 21st Doctrine

Page 2: 21 stewardship

2

Stewardship

• We are God's stewards, entrusted by Him with time and opportunities, abilities and possessions, and the blessings of the earth and its resources. We are responsible to Him for their proper use.

Page 3: 21 stewardship

3

What is a Steward

• “In Scripture and theology, a minister of Christ, whose duty is to dispense the provisions of the gospel, to preach its doctrines and administer its ordinances.”

• Webster’s Dictionary

Page 4: 21 stewardship

4

Stewardship

• And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. (Gen 1:26 KJV)

Page 5: 21 stewardship

5

Stewardship

• So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

• (Gen 1:27-28 KJV)

Page 6: 21 stewardship

6

Stewardship

• But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee.

• (1Ch 29:14 KJV)• Read Haggai 1:3 - 11

Page 7: 21 stewardship

7

Stewardship

• We acknowledge God's ownership by faithful service to Him and our fellow men, and by returning tithes and giving offerings for the proclamation of His gospel and the support and growth of His church.

Page 8: 21 stewardship

8

The Giver is presentin every gift we receive from Him

9

Stewardship

• Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.

• (Mal 3:8-9 KJV)

Page 10: 21 stewardship

10

Stewardship

• Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

• (Mal 3:10 KJV)

Page 11: 21 stewardship

11

Stewardship

• And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.

• (Mal 3:11 KJV)

Page 12: 21 stewardship

12

Stewardship

• And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the LORD of hosts.

• (Mal 3:12 KJV)

Page 13: 21 stewardship

13

Origin of Tithing

• Abraham and Jacob Tithed

•Genesis 14:20 and Genesis 28:22

• Tithing was ordained by God.

• (Tree in Eden)

Page 14: 21 stewardship

14

Origin of Tithing

• The distinctive arrangement of returning a tithe to God “was made by Jesus Christ Himself”

• Testimonies 6.384

Page 15: 21 stewardship

15

Jesus recognised Tithing

Jesus “recognized the payment of tithe as a duty” (DA 617)

Matthew 23:23Jesus condemns the abuse of sacred obligation

Page 16: 21 stewardship

16

Tithing

• Tithing indicates that the true centre of our being can only be found in God.

• It indicates our true dependence on God.

• It liberates us from the chains of selfishness.

Page 17: 21 stewardship

17

The Nature of Tithe

• “It is holy to the Lord”

• “For like the Sabbath, a tenth of the increase is sacred”

• “God’s portion is not at all the property of man”

Page 18: 21 stewardship

18

In order to keep it holy, tithe must be

returned to God

Page 19: 21 stewardship

19

Motivation for Tithing

• A response to God's Lordship and saving acts

• No traces of legalism or gaining acceptance

Page 20: 21 stewardship

20

Stewardship

• Stewardship is a privilege given to us by God for nurture in love and the victory over selfishness and covetousness.

Page 21: 21 stewardship

21

Stewardship

• For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.

• (1Co 9:9-10 KJV)

Page 22: 21 stewardship

22

Stewardship

• If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things? If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.

• (1Co 9:11-12 KJV)

Page 23: 21 stewardship

23

Stewardship

• Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar? Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

• (1Co 9:13-14 KJV)

Page 24: 21 stewardship

24

Stewardship

• Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

• (Mat 23:23 KJV)• Read 2 Corinthians 8:1 -

15

Page 25: 21 stewardship

25

Stewardship

• The steward rejoices in the blessings that come to others as a result of his faithfulness.

Page 26: 21 stewardship

26

Stewardship

• For it hath pleased them of Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor saints which are at Jerusalem. It hath pleased them verily; and their debtors they are. For if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister unto them in carnal things.

• (Rom 15:26-27 KJV)

Page 27: 21 stewardship

27

Ministers to teach that:

• Tithing is binding, as much today as in Israel of old

• One must give a faithful

and honest tithe

• Tithe is to be given to the Lord, acknowledging dependence on God

Page 28: 21 stewardship

28

Collecting the Tithe

• As an act of worship, take the tithe to church

• “Faithful stewards to place the Lord’s money in His treasury” T 9:59

Page 29: 21 stewardship

29

Titheable Sources

• Tithe is to be paid from all income and increase, allowing the individual freedom to determine the details

Page 30: 21 stewardship

30

Page 31: 21 stewardship

31

Stewardship and Time

• And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

(Mar 1:15 KJV)• There is a Plan of

Salvation and Time is an important part of the plan.

Page 32: 21 stewardship

32

Stewardship and Time

• - God’s gift to man- God at work in time- Christ, the center of time- Man must not only do what God asks of him but also do it when He asks.

Page 33: 21 stewardship

33

Stewardship and Time

• So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

• (Psa 90:12 KJV)

Page 34: 21 stewardship

34

Stewardship and Time

• To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

• (Ecc 3:1 KJV)

Page 35: 21 stewardship

35

Stewardship and Time

• Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.

• (Pro 16:3 KJV)• God expects the

believer to use his/her time productively.

Page 36: 21 stewardship

36

Jesus and Time Management

• All His time was dedicated to God’s work.

• Jesus spent His time with those who were in need of Him.

• John 17 shows us that Jesus had priorities and objectives.

Page 37: 21 stewardship

37

Stewardship and Time

• Make time to:– Pray– Study God’s Word– Meditate on His Word– To train– To examine one’s

conscience– To reach out– For family life (don’t

overwork)– For Sabbath observance

Page 38: 21 stewardship

38

Conclusion

• God gave us this earth, our bodies, and our talents (and time). He wants us to care for them and use them to do His work. When we return tithes and give offerings, He blesses us.
